  • Well this one has been a long time coming! I last rode the R1200RS about 3 years ago, I loved the bike and so I was very interested to ride the new improved 2019 version with BMW's new "Shiftcam" technology and the brilliant TFT that BMW do. For some reason it has taken ages for BMW to make the RS available despite announcing it back in November, anyway it's here in dealers now, has it been worth the wait?

What an utterly splendid machine! - to my eyes, quite the nicest, most aesthetically pleasing and balanced looking of the BMW's you've recently reviewed; thinking in particular of the R1250GS,/GS Adventure, the R1250RT, and the K1600GT
The question you raised - if you never went off road, why would you buy a GS over the RS, is a very pertinent one.
Here in Australia, the GS Adventure is the biggest selling BMW by numbers, just edging ahead of the 'standard' GS, and with the RT coming in third place.
Having spoken to a number of GS/GSA riders, a lot of them don't take them off road because of the weight, the increased chance of a fall, and commensurate cost of repairs for such expensive machines if they were dropped and damaged.
But, if like me, off road was to mean nothing more serious than an unmade road, with small stones over dirt etc, then most of the BMW road bikes should handle that quite easily with care and caution. Yes, the GS's will handle it better, but for the perhaps 10% of the time you might go on an unmade road, you are making compromises to the handling of the bike for it's off road capabilities, to the other 90% of the time you are on regular roads, where arguably an RT or RS is the better balanced machine for road work.
Whilst the GSA sits at the top of the adventure model tree, both the R1250RS and R1250RT have the K1600GT and K1600GTL respectively, above them in terms of the super smooth six - ideal for very long touring distances on regular roads - but at the penalty of a lot more weight and cost.
If you only went on the odd unmade road - say down to a campsite, - and did mainly day tours with the odd multi-day long distance tour thrown in, the R1250RS looks to be almost the perfect bike in the BMW range, bar perhaps the heavier, more powerful K1600GT - certainly under such usage needs, I would question the need? for a GS/GSA.
It has plenty of comfort in terms of it's ergonomics, excellent wind protection without making you feel so sheltered that you're not riding a motorbike anymore, luggage options for touring, and inspiring handling and performance.
And, for a BMW, it gets away from that Charlie and Ewan around the world, or Mr Policeman on his RT look, and presents a really classy, understated and very stylish motorcycle.indeed.
Loved the review, and really liked the bike - it might live in the shade of the GS re the globe trotting image, but betters the pipe and slippers image of the RT, or the bulk and weight of the K1600GT, and whilst not a trendy 'retro' machine, to my eyes is just a superb looking and finished machine that one could be very proud to own.

Agreed all round - cheers John....

    • @Pisceanboi
      @Pisceanboi 5 лет назад +1

Edward Barker I agree re the GS image perception. How do you find your new RS after owning a GS? I think the all around practicality and go anywhere abilities of the GS is part of the appeal, even if not always used. And of course with a very upright and relaxed riding position, a very comfortable bike. But the RT offers even more comfort, and the RS is even sportier - but without being uncomfortable - than a GS, hence my thoughts about the RT & RS being better for the road overall than a GS if one never intended to take advantage of the GS’s off road abilities.

I had the 1200RS and it's a fantastic bike. I also take a pillion and used it for touring. Trouble is you'll want a top box for the extra carrying capacity and for your pillion to lean against and relax. To get a top box with decent capacity (more than one helmet) for the 1200RS they tend to limit the space available for the pillion and push them into an uncomfortable, upright seating position. Touring on the RS is only really good if you're a solo rider. It's the reason I reluctantly changed to the RT and the new 1250RS is a no go for me.

Coming back after many years to biking had my heart set on an RT as I love the boxer engine but tried to move one around last week on the forcourt and like the GS I found it too heavy. Test rode the R1250R and great handling bike and easier to manouver but too naked for me and even the salesman said the screens are ineffective. I never thought about the RS as it looked too much like a sporting riding position but if the bar risers work this could be all boxes ticked. Great review as always Mr Flyer, thanks.

At the time I didn't like the dash or the DRL on the RS which have now been changed and liked the way you could complete overtakes just by a roll on roll off of the throttle. Ultimately though I preferred the Telelever front end on the GS as it gave a much better ride on poor road surfaces. The RS is however quite a bit cheaper though not sure if the lack of popularity will mean residuals are poorer than the GS but certainly if I do decide to swap my current GS for something else the RS would be on the test ride list.... especially if they bought the lupin blue colour scheme back

It's amazing how broad the spectrum of "sports tourers" is now, even if you leave out the ADV models. Not to mention '90s sports bikes like the GSXR1100, TL1000S, FZR1000, YZF1000, VTR1000, ZX9R and Daytona 1200, as well as 2000s "Hyperbikes", have been retroactively assimilated into the category. The RS (and similar naked bikes like the R1250R or K1300R) is about as far towards the touring side of the spectrum as I'd be interested in. I guess it's a matter for debate whether the R100RS or FJ1100 was the first true "Sports Tourer". Oh, and good to see the Sun isn't completely broken over in the UK.

Mr. Flyer- This machine strikes me as likely the best road bike available (I just got the GS though for those times when the road turns to dirt). I still enjoy my 1981 R100RS; I note that there seem to have been some changes made for 2019. One thing that the old airhead has as an advantage over the new bike is the absolutely splendid fairing, and I always wonder why BMW stopped using this design as its weather protection is so good. Thanks for another fine review! Bob

Just back from a 1400 mile round trip to the Isle of Skye in my Honda Crossrunner. Great bike. Fab V4 engine. Starting to wonder what my next bike could be as big mile touring is where I’m at. The RS was up for consideration along with the RT and the Multistrada; so thanks TMF for this review I think you’ve helped me reach the right decision to plump for the RS. I think it’s the least expensive of the three to boot! 👍🏻

Interesting that you found the screen worked so well. I tried the 1200RS a few years ago, I'm about the same size as you, and with the screen in the low position I felt a lot of wind from shoulders up, in the high position I had terrible buffeting around 80, which totally put me off the bike. And although the weight of the bike dissapears once moving, I found it really noticeable with the lower bars when trying to wheel it back into a parking space, much harder than on an adventure bike.

In reference to the hot weather your experiencing I am stuck working on the Oregon coast where the high today was 69 F (20.5 C). The bad part is my motorcycle is getting lonely sitting in my garage. One thing I didn't hear you mention or maybe I just missed it, how much has the fuel economy changed? I have 10k miles on my '17 RS and the smaller tank is absolutely not a problem...I get to fill up every 200 miles and it religiously takes 4.2 gallons of fuel (that's 16 liters every 320km). You're dead on about the weight on the wrists, but as you said if you're coming from a sports bike this thing is extremely comfortable and also a really practical commuter if you put the luggage on it. I can easily do the 150 mile ride to Atlanta and come back the same day with no fatigue what so ever. Great review, love your channel!

  • @davidfalgout7304

I rode the 1250 GS and RS. I love both. I find the GS more of a universal tool. All day comfort specially for wrist. Better presence on the road ... it is important to be seen! Should the road present other than smooth bitumen, the GS will give you more options. Hey, remember when you dropped your GS in the mud/ ice at that stop? You would have had a real hard time with the RS. If one can only own 1 bike, the GS makes the most sense! But you my friend with a garage full of bikes... I think you need a 1250 GS and RS! They can keep each other company!

Having bought BMW bikes recently, and come close to buying the 1250RS last year until its release was delayed, I would just like to clarify the options situation. The basic bike has the base spec which is common to all three variants, and can be specced up by adding any or all of the three options packages - Comfort, Premium and Dynamic. The Sport version is not fitted with either Comfort or Premium packs unless you add them at extra cost. Unlike the Exclusive TE in the GS range, the RS Exclusive does not come with all the options either, but only the Premium (also called touring) pack, meaning that to fully spec the Exclusive you would need to add the Comfort and Dynamic packs. Even once you have all three packs there are still other extra cost options, for example the SOS kit, and unbelievably you don't get a rear rack, or luggage grid as BMW call it, included either unless you pay another £185 to add it! The list price with all three option packs plus a rear rack is £15,285 for the Base model, £15, 575 for the Exclusive, and £15,710 for the Sport.

A question many will want to ask is “basic version of the new R1250RS or for slightly less money, a fully spec’d up low miles R1200RS?”.
The gap between the last of the 1200RS Sport SE with all the farkles and perhaps some owner mods such as mudsling, crudcatcher and cylinder head protectors, plus luggage and a newer basic spec 1250 is about £3K. A new top spec 1250 with all the options is closer to £16K.
By comparison, a 3 to say 8K miles example of the top spec 2018 RS including luggage is about £10 to £11K. Big difference. I went the 1200 route for this reason. My mate bought a ‘22 model Sport te and paid about £4k more and has commented about how mine has loads more extras plus on the road the main riding experience different between them is that the older bike uses semi active esa whilst the newer ine uses the better and more sophisticated fully active esa. The oerformance difference for what the bikes are intended fir is a non issue.
I fitted mine with grip buddies and MRA varioscreen plus have bar risers coming. BMW constantly disappoint with their poor screens and ought imho to fit higher and closer mounted bars as these two things are what most seem to have to spend decent money changing.
My other niggle with bmw is they shortchange customers by not fitting front engine case and rear shock protection. Had these on mine luckily.
Once you have the bars and screen sorted this is an all day comfortable bike and has somewhat of a jeckyll and hyde character. Road mode for relaxed touring sans luggage, or dynamic mode for some impressive sportsbike like antics with a huge wave of torque to ride it on. 1250 only shows its legs when winding fully on in sporty riding but its marginal between them at best.

If the engine of the rumoured 1300 GS is as great as people are expecting it to be then I may well end up buying a R 1300 R or RS. Some other video reviews of this bike said the quick shifter was clunky when shifting from first to second so hopefully that's remedied too with the R 1300 R and RS.
