    I'm shocked I was expecting No1 and comfort to be in the list you don't like as you are a GS man. A good top 5. I love the Boxxer engine for the looks as much as the smoothness it looks so damn cool sticking out like that certainly better than some engine that's tuck away you can hardly see. I can make 5 things I don't like. 1. Screen. 2. Non illuminated controls 3. Gearbox can be clunky 4.price 5. Sound

    Another thing about it's handling, is that nothing upsets the chassis. Hit a bump in the middle of a corner? Not a problem, it doesn't even notice uneven surfaces. It tracks and holds the line beautifully. It's truly gotta be witchcraft.

    TMF - I have a 2020 1250RS. I have had it for about 2 months and I split riding time between my RS, Street Scrambler and SUV. That being said, I have about 1600 miles on it. What a fantastic bike it is. When I bought my bike it had the low seat, which was replaced with a Sargent Seat and I added the Helibar risers. Those two changes have increased the comfort on the bike. I think you hit all the top 5 points on the bike. The power is so smooth. I love this bike.

      Ordered when ‘launched’ last year. As the GS is en vogue and made on the same line it put production back a full 12 months. BMW launched to many bikes at the same time. Due to this plenty of folk of stepped off the RS on to the GS but now want to go back to the RS. The machine is a riders bike. This is now my fourth RS since launch in ‘15. On strength of your first review of the BMW 1250RS I test rode a new one in September. My bike is a Honda Crossrunner (800cc V4) and I have to say I could not see or feel what all the RS fuss is about. The boxer engine is a lump compared to my Honda’s; its build quality wasn’t as good; why are the RS’s body panel attachment screws exposed?; quick shift I could take it or leave it. All very underwhelming.
    However I agree about the comfy seat, low centre of gravity and the TFT. I will give it a second chance next year because I’m sure it deserves it, I was just so disappointed by my first BMW experience.

    I agree with you, and liked your first review of the bike, the 1250rs in my view is a better looking bike with a much improved front end, not quite so sure about the bigger silencer though. Having owned a R1200Rs which was unfortunately written off in a SMIDSY U turn, I have just purchased a new R1250Rs sport. I notice a few improvements over the older model; 1, The side stand is less ‘upright’ so is more stable when parked, 2 LED headlights are much brighter and a better spread of beam, 3, gearbox is improved and slicker, 4, TFT is brilliant meaning I can actually read the speedo now, 5, Engine is smoother at low speed and no engine surging that I used to notice on the 1200.
    So would is it worth upgrading from a 1200? The performance difference is not significant, however the improvements make it a nicer place to be but only if you have cash burning a hole in your pocket.

    Another great video. I've had two R1200RS's and now a R1200GS and they are both great bikes but I'm the same as you; it's the price that put me off! My R1200RS with keyless was £14.3k the top spec new one is over £16k! I don't like the NAV posn on the RS but at least you can use the TFT on the 1250. I'm also looking forward to trying the new S1000XR. I did try a new "old" model, and the riding position was spot on, perfect for a taller rider. But after living with an R1250R for a while there's no way I could live with the S1000XR's engine. Just felt like it had no torque, and I kept trying to change up even though I was already in 6th :), but be interesting to see if the new engine in the 2020 is more torquey because if is that could be a contender :)

      I completely disagree. This new symmetrical headlamp look is the epitome of bland. A little bit Fazer, a little bit Versys (neither of which appeal to me)and now lost its uniqueness. ( I know the XR has the same look).The change could've been justified to me if BMW had cured the wind buffeting problem but by all accounts that hasn't happened. I like the idea of more power and especially more torque compared to the 1200RS but a combination of those headlights and dull colour schemes has put me off.

    Great video as usual. They just released the new info on the Yamaha FJR. 2020 will be the last year for the Euro 4 standard FJR’s, according to motorcyclenews.com. I told you that I was waiting to see if they did a color change from the matte phantom blue and if they added anything new. Well they changed the color to what looks like a dark metallic grey. They did not continue with the base model A. I am going to my dealer here in the states next week to put a deposit down for my 2020 model which will be released in March of next year. Needless to say, I cannot wait, but hate that I have to. 😂😔
    If it was not for the boxer engine on the RT, I would have probably gone for it. But I just cannot stand the sides sticking out like that. Thanks again for another great video and keep up the great work. Keep pushing Mrs. Flyer to ride and she will become “One of us, one of us.” 😎😂

    I'm a fan of twins in general and quite tempted by the new RS (except for the price!), but as I'm more lanky than your good self at 6' tall and 33" leg I do wonder if the riding position might be a bit cramped? The pegs certainly felt a tad high when I sat on one, and there's no sign of lowered pegs as far as I can see.
    I do wish Moto Guzzi would do a road going version of their V85...

    • @drw1926
      @drw1926 4 года назад

      Peter Livermore there is a high seat option whichever should help a bit. I believe it's about 1" taller than the standard seat. And I believe the RS also has a Sport seat option, which oddly is even taller than the high seat.

      I'm 6'2 and I recently test rode this bike and I know what you mean, but there is a lowered footpeg kit now on the options lists, it's about £500 but it looks good ! Btw, I own an R1250R, and I was thinking of PX'ing my R for this bike because of it's better wind protection, but I can't help thinking that the R fits me better. (I've got a +30mm seat on mine btw)

    • @JeffWoodVJ
      @JeffWoodVJ 4 года назад

      tbh, I think a high seat on an RS might make the forward lean a bit too much ?? I'm beginning to think that an R with a high seat is a better option for taller riders..I think I need another test ride on an RS and this time i'll stick my +30mm Wunderlich seat on it, that would be a good test, and if I do that I'll report back :)

The upgrades are I know the de rigueur of modern motorcycles but the heart of the machine is still a derivation of the gem of an engine that still beats in my "Scooter". 1993 R1100RS with 240,000+ kms and many more to come.
    Very hard to choose between the RS and GS for touring, even two up (as may be in your future) as they are both superb at it.

    I've owned the Exclusive version for nearly 2 months now. Has about 3,500 km on it.
    Knees are a little cramped at 6'2, but I can still ride all day even though I am old with a dodgy knee..
    Rear brake lever is not long enough - have to have ankle at a sharp angle to hit it which has caused me to miss it racing down hills a few times. Now has a Wunderlich extender but that seems a little too long - a work in progress
    Slight vibration everywhere above about 4500 rpm. Nothing to worry about in Australia as that is way over the speed limit.
    Ended up putting a set of bar back risers on it - much better, more relaxed arms.
    Screen is crap.
    BMW crap Bluetooth system in the TFT & crippled firmware in the Nav VI.
    Can't have DRL & Low Beam on at the same time - I figure more light must be better.
    Can't fit more than a postage stamp under the seats.
    NAV holder should have more adjustment built in - another Wunderlich accessory to fix that.
    Apart from the above, I love every thing else about it.
    I traded a VFR1200X Crosstourer for it & couldn't be happier.

    I'm on the market for a sports tourer and narrowed it down to this and the 2021 Hayabusa. This one has better amenities (like keyless go, factory hardbags), but - to me - it sounds and feels like an agricultural machine with all that uneven voice and constant vibration. One can even see the windscreen vibrate a lot in your video. The Hayabusa just feels much more bike for roughly the same money.

    Great review as always, and thank you.
    Well, if you never ride off road... and are finding it very comfortable and a delight to ride, that says an awful lot.
    All BMW's bikes offer various configurations and setups to more or less suit different intended end uses, marketing, and personal preference. From what I can see of it, there isn't a 'bad' bike amongst any of them.
    Could you take an RS or RT down an unmade road for a short distance if you had to?
    By unmade, I mean a non tar sealed road, usually dirt surface covered with stones/gravel etc. Because if that is all you might ever do as regards 'off road' then it becomes harder to justify the GS/GSA in my opinion, unless you are really tall and like the extra distance twixt seat and pegs; need a large 25 or 30 litre fuel tank; prefer the top opening aluminium cases, or are simply sold on the looks over and above anything else in BMW's range.
    But the price you pay, is that the suspension and overall setup will always be a compromise to suit both on and off road, so if you never went off road, as in green lanes, mud, grass, fire trails, etc, your time spent on tarmac would be better utilised handling wise on a bike that's setup for tarmac use, and without the handling and suspension compromises inherent in a dual purpose machine.
    For me, if an RS or RT could handle short distances on an unmade road, say down to a campsite, that would be all I would ever need; meantime I'd enjoy the superior road riding and handling characteristics for the 95% of the time I was on tar seal, versus compromising that to suit the 10% of the time I might go down an unmade road on a GS/GSA dual purpose bike.
    Of course personal preference will always come into it, and neither is right or wrong - but I admit I'm more taken with the looks of the R1250RS over most of the other boxer engine bikes in the BMW range - and possibly the best looking of the entire range to my jaded eyes..
    Cheers and thanks again for the review - I think you should buy one.. :-)

    I’m in the market for a “pipe ‘n slippers” sport touring bike, so I may be a tad picky with your review. You say the gearbox is amazing; my experience is that the Boxer’s gear box is decent, but hardly as refined as other manufacturers, and even not as good as BMW’s own R1000’s. That said, most recently I’ve only tapped through the 2019 RnineT’s gearbox, not the newest RS. Relative to other bikes you’ve tested, is the RS’s gearbox really that refined? Is it better than the air cooled RnineT? Does the up/down quick shifter (absent on the RnineT) work as seamlessly as other manufacturers?

    • @c138599
      @c138599 4 года назад

      I found the R1200RS (a year ago) to be very smooth both up and down provided technique is correct; unforgiving (clunky) if you get it wrong. You must have throttle open when changing up; completely closed when changing down. You're right, though, the S1000RR was silky smooth, next level. I did ask but BMW mechanic was unable to explain why the boxer gearbox was not as smooth as the "S".

    • @UncleWally3
      @UncleWally3 4 года назад

      PT -Thanks for sharing your experience; most of my (extensive) experience is with the older “half NASA half Massey-Ferguson” Boxers. Compared to the dry clutch days, the newer Boxer’s gearboxes are better but, I also wonder why the new models don’t meet the same standard as their four and six cylinder Beemers (the newer R1000 is butter smooth as is the up/down quick shifter). A mystery, I guess, yet to be explained by the BMW wizards!
