Great video, super professional and clear, thanks for taking the time and effort to do it. Question: I want to do my own aeration and overseeding this year, I currently have a lot of weeds on my lawn, I believe that I need to get rid of them before I do the aeration and overseeding, and maybe allow 3-4 weeks in between the killing of the weeds and the overseeding, is this a correct assumption?
You say to over seed an existing lawn use 6 lbs/1000 sq ft but Jonathan Green black beauty ultra which is 80 to 90% tall fescue says 2.5 lbs/1000 sq ft. I would like a really thick turf but my yard is really thin and patchy right now. I am thinking to put at least 4 lbs/1000 sq ft. How much pounds do you think would be ideal please? Appreciate your response.
Confirming you're talking about Tall Fescue sod? Don't do that now in spring/summer. Yes, wait until the autumn. Yes, after 1 year of being laid down, this autumn it will be time to aerate and overseed.
Compost is enough as a starter for the seedlings, but after that we recommend an application of fertilizer a couple of times through the growing season (the cooler months). If you're in the Southeast of the US, don't fertilize Tall Fescue during the warm moths.
I must revise my answer. I thought I was commenting on a different video of ours. I typically bring my own sprinkler to the shoot and it's this one: www.lowes.com/pd/Gilmour-3500-sq-ft-Oscillating-Sled-Sprinkler/3107027 The one in this video was the homeowner's and I don't know anything about that sprinkler. Since his sprinkler was already there and hooked up, I decided to go with it. Sorry I don't have any info on it.
It appears I put too much fescue in one area when I did an over seed. The grass strand quantity is very thick, but yellowing and the strands are thin. Anyway to fix this? Or just give it time?
My advice was going to be to thin it by hand and the boss confirmed the same thing - hand pull them to thin. He also confirmed that it will likely correct itself over time.
In the southeast US, where we're located, we recommend overseeding Tall Fescue in the autumn only. In the spring, it doesn't have enough time to become established before the hot months arrive and stress it.
Mow as soon as they are tall enough to mow. Don't wait a long time. Here's more info from our website: blog.supersod.com/how-soon-should-i-cut-my-grass
We're down here in baking hot Georgia and for us the earliest overseeding is in September, so for you maybe August? Just a guess. Regarding fungal treatment, I would guess (and again this is a guess because Michigan is not our region) that the latest would be in August too? Perhaps later if it remains hot into September?
My lawn is mainly crabgrass. Can i just do this same process and add fescue seed? Or do i need to get rid of the crabgrass before i add the grass seed?
We recommend getting rid of the crabgrass before you seed. You'll have all summer to take care of that crabgrass. Please keep in mind that Tall Fescue should be seeded in the autumn, so don't plant Tall Fescue seed now, wait until fall.
Hi Anti - We don't recommend verticutting tall fescue since it's a clumping grass that doesn't build up much thatch. It's usually done with warm season grasses that spread via stolons and rhizomes. Rather, aerate and reseed your tall fescue lawn every autumn.
@@SupersodTurfgrass Thank you for your answer. The thing is I have a lot of weeds and unwanted rhizomes grass growing on most of my Lawns so I thought verticutting would help getting rid of Bermuda, crab grass etc. Where I live (south of France) in summer we have drought, reaching more or less 100 Fahrenheit and winters more or less 14 Fahrenheit. I thought tall fescue would be best but correct me if I'm wrong as I'm no expert at all. I can't afford a core aerator. We don't have such a thing in France apart in golf course.
We select Tall Fescue varieties with the best heat tolerance, but here in the heat of zone 7 we recommend overseeding ever fall to maintain the thickest, most luxurious lawn possible.
Great Video... If I wanted to purchase the weed free grass seed you mentioned, is there a link I can go to?? Also the compost spreader where could that be purchased... Thanks in advance
We don't sell Tall Fescue seed on-line because it's cost prohibitive to ship it. If you're near a Super-Sod in GA, NC, or SC, we sell both the seed and the compost spreaders. Here's a link where you can look up our stores: www.supersod.com/storelocator/ Please call ahead to make sure we have a spreader in stock for purchase or to reserve one to rent for a day or a weekend.
Tenacity is a POST emergent herbicide used to treat weeds after they germinate. Yes, it's safe on tall fescue, but it's NOT A PRE emergent. Please don't use any pre emergents at the same time as planting tall fescue seeds as they will inhibit your tall fescue seeds from germinating too.
@@SupersodTurfgrass sorry but we'll agree to disagree on this. It's a well known fact that mesotrione, the active ingredient in Tenacity, acts as pre and post emergent and is also safe to use on most grass types with the exception of a few. A simple Google search, or RUclips search will back up my claim.
@@matthewhuck223 There's no need to agree to disagree or even say sorry - we love learning around here. I asked a coworker and he said yes, it's used as a pre-emergent, but we don't usually go there because using a post-emergent as a pre-emergent is confusing to the DIY homeowners we're creating our educational materials for. We've only recently started recommending Tenacity as a post-emergent because it was only available to professionals. So, this is why I have known little about Tenacity until this month! You're the second person to mention it this month, the other person was talking about it regarding using it on Centipede, which it is also labeled for use on. Don't use Tenacity on Zoysia or Bermuda at all - it's not labeled as safe from them. Thanks for writing!

Thanks for letting us know you enjoyed it! I think it's satisfying too.
Is it ok to use the roller right after aerating? Will the dirt plugs clog up the roller?
The dirt plugs don't clog the roller - in my experience they don't get picked up by the roller.
Great video, what about using tenacity when planning grass seed? Thanks
