@@briansweeney7166 I like to focus on all the cultural aspects covered in our videos for a dense, healthy lawn that can prevent and defeat offending weeds. If that doesn't or hasn't worked and you want to employ pre-emergent herbicide, I would apply in early fall (September) and again in Mid-January. Then I would overseed with RTF in early to mid May. Timing is the key when using a preemergent for poa or really most any weed.
Some. A lot got washed away and some didn’t even come up. They aerated and over seeded 2times in the back. Over seeded twice in front. I watered 2 times a day everyday like they said. During the spring the grass is beautiful , during the summer it stresses because of the heat and dry spells. I like it because I don't need to cut it and it fits my native/prairie garden.
Hi John, I had been using over the past 2 yrs a fescue blend called ECO grass that I am please with here in Indianapolis Indiana where Iive. I can cut it or not since I wanted to stop using a mower. Has a very beautiful look to it. Just thought I'd share that with you.

10 or 15% Hybrid SPF30 mixed with RTF would look great and be a high performing turf blend. Keeping Bermuda out is best accomplished by keeping your cool season grass dense and ultra healthy with really healthy soil. Thanks for watching :)
Hello John, Just came across your channel and liking the content. I’m in Upstate NY. I have a blend of red fescue, kentucky blue and annual rye. One area of my lawn is always a challenge- many brown spots and areas pulls up very easily which only tells me I’m dealing with a weak root system. I hear so much about not seeding in the spring, but had I found your channel sooner, I would have attempted it. How can I I forward a picture of my lawn for suggestions? It is starting to fill in slowly. Thanks again for great info.
Fall and Spring are great for seeding turf. In upstate New York this is still an excellent time to overseed. As high temps get over 90 degrees, caution needs to be exercised when contemplating the seeding of cool season grasses. Go to our website and use the contact us feature to send us photos ( www.johnandbobs.com/pages/customer-service ). We look forward to helping. Thanks for watching :)
Have you checked for lawn grubs? It sounds more like you may have them rather than lack of seed. This results in the grass being easy to pull up due to the roots being eaten away
Dear John and Chip: just noticed that our tall fescue on front lawn has runners that are coming to the surface. It looks horrible!! Any suggestions on what to do?!? I will definitely be ordering your stuff for lawns, but any advice you can give me would be most appreciated.
Kurapia requires much less water, is tougher & much less finicky during high heat summers and looks completely different than Bolero in that it isn't really a grass and doesn't look grass or meadow like. Bolero isn't that well suited to high heat summers, but people like it because it provides that lush all year green meadow like look that is maintained with relatively high mowing heights. Bolero provides a very traditional deep green grassy appearance - quite unlike Kurapia.
No, not if you overseed properly. K31 is a type of tall fescue, so best is to overseed with some type of tall fescue, like my preferred RTF by Barenbrug.
I have Tall Fescue side by side with Common Bermuda. What do you recommend to keep the Bermuda to invading the Tall Fescue? My Fescue is under a large canopy of various trees shaded in a section of 20,000 sq ft. while the Common Bermuda is in a section of 3800 sq ft , full sun no trees. I live in central OK. I would like to expand the Tall Fescue into another bare section that once had five trees located in the section. It was part Tall Fescue to the west joining the 20,000 section and bare ground to the east next to a building wall. Do you think it will work to seed in May and hold up through July and August hot summer months with no shade (I have planted two trees to the west of the bare ground but it will take time for the trees to produce enough shade to protect the proposed area this summer.) Or wait till September? This section is about 2500 square feet. Since the area was inhibited with Bradford Pear trees and bare soil towards the building, what Smart Soil Solutions would you recommend to improve the area for the Tall Fescue seeding? (I have not viewed your video on over-seeding, but plan to do so today.) My Fescue is a blend Tall Fescue 1002 for shaded area acquired from the Superseed Store. They have a blend of Tall Fescue for sunny areas 1001 that I am planning to use on the bare section. I believe this Superstore seed comes from Oregon. The shaded area seed has done great in past over-seeding in the 20,000 section with no weed invasion, while the Titan RX Tall Fescue seed introduced several weeds. I used it once and do not plan to use that Titan seed again. Thank you!
Yours is an interesting challenge! The simplest & best advice is to keep both turf types very, very healthy - if successful you have a shot at them both remaining pure. May is a good time to seed tall fescue. Make it very early May for excellent results. I would prepare your area by ripping or tilling as deeply as possible, then leveling, fine grading and seeding. Then I'd apply a heavy application of our Blend (80 lbs) over the seed and then a light top dress like Amend or good compost at 1/8" thick or a little less, then keep moist when sun is out. Should work great!
am i right about using tall fescue in case, when my garden full of couch grass(Elymus repens)? in a way to masks that weed?... so since tall fescue are pretty durable (almost like weed), and fast growing with a company of couch grass - it wont be so nasty ? not so nasty as combination of couch grass + KBG for example? because KBG so thick... and elegant... and couch grass will looks like monster in that case. what you think best grass in case of invasion of couch grass or other aggressive perennial weed ... thanks in advance
I think you are on the right track. You can moderate couch grass and other invasive weed type grasses by encouraging a healthy stand of tall fescue and doing everything possible to maximize the health of the tall fescue.
Titan Rx fescue is a major, well known brand of turf type tall fescue. I have never used it so I can't offer informed knowledge as with the RTF and the Bolero turf type tall fescue that I praised in our video.
Prepare your soil and apply seed. Over the seed apply 20-25lbs per 1,000sqft of our Blend and then about 1/8" top dress mulch like Amend or equal. Then spray over the Amend with our Penetrate Liquid Biotiller. Water appropriately as per our videos and mow as soon as possible, then apply 8-10lbs Nourish Biosol after the first mowing. I tried overseeing last year and it didn’t really work too well. I’m dealing with moss after winter and crab grass. I’ve watched a bunch of your videos so hopefully I can do it right this year. Do you have a recommendation of how to use your products in stages? Thanks so much
The first "stage" should be to apply our Soil Optimizer (Optimize) asap, because it's the least expensive and most concentrated so you need very little. If you overseed again, apply Optimize right over the seed. The second "stage"(a day, a month or more after) should be to apply our Penetrate Liquid Biotiller. If you want to consider speeding more comprehensive results, you can eventually apply Maximize and Nourish Biosol. - John

All tall fescues have relatively wide blades when compared to bluegrass, perennial rye, etc. The industry has aggressively pursued hybridization to create finer tall fescues because they are regarded as more attractive. All the varieties that I know are still coarse (wide), but they are finer than traditional tall fescue. I prefer to use RTF tall fescue and Bolero Plus tall fescue, which have both been bred to have a not as wide leaf. If you want a wide leaf, then use traditional plain tall fescue with no varietal or cultivar name. That old fashioned tall fescue has the widest leaf blade.
Hi Carol, Based on your description I think you may have overseeded with tall fescue. Tall Fescue doesn't germinate well w/ temps over 100. Even over 90 is a problem and probably twice per day watering isn't enough to keep the seed from drying during daylight. It depends on the specifics of your high temps.
