When I first tried out a baitcasting reel after using spinning gear, I committed a crucial mistake that caused me way more bird's nests than I should've had, as well as way more line breaks than I should've had.
Braided line is great for casting distance and sensitivity, especially the lighter braid if you're using spinning gear.
There's not as much stretch or memory as with mono, and it's much thinner.
This is all great for spinning gear, but not exactly great for baitcasting gear.
See the biggest mistake most anglers make when using baitcasting reels for inshore fishing here and save yourself some major headaches!
Have any questions about using baitcasting reels?

Makes sense, I'm still new to baitcasters but I started with 7lb braid and it wasn't too bad but noticed the line dig down easy and had a snap which lead to replacing the line.
Just switched to 50lb braid and it doesn't dig down at all and super easy to pull out birds nest which it usually won't even knot up. Love it
Nice vid. I use 10 pound braid on my spinning reel and 30 on my bait caster. Tight lines, fellas.
Well done. Quick and to the point. Thanks for the tips
Would make sense why my 10 and 15lb braid act up randomly and get pulled deep into the spool. Thanks for the help.
Wow - thanks for this video, mate. Was just about to spool a new Revo Inshore with 5 kilo braid when this video was viewed; will be using 14 kilo instead, as of now. Thank you again. Cheers!
A tip of my own is to use 8 strand coated braids. I had trouble with 4 strand laying wrong on the spool and digging in also. I only have ever used 30 lb on my baitcaster and still had this problem. I have been using 8 strand coated J Braid and havent had any issues.
good info thx, I use baitcasters most of the time.
Just purchased my first baitcaster rod and reel. Sure am glad I watched this. I have a spool of 20 lb braid but Im just gonna use it on my spinning reels and go with 30 on my baitcaster.
Check the diameter first
What size mono or flor would you use for in shore fishing ?
Hi have question, today i got lost 2 lures on my new baitcaster setup okuma komando ss 273 reel and savage gear mpp2 8.6 rod. My braid line 0.32 150m was snap x3 times today, i dont understand why it happens. Does it happens from backlashes? Or from something else, any suggestions?
Nice tip Tony!!! Thanks
Nice tips, can u tell me what do u mean by 20Lb or more pound braided line use in baitcasting reel. How muh thicker diameter braided line would be good on baitcasting reel for snakehead fishing, plz respond? Right now I m using .34mm of 40Lb braided line should I go for.28m m braided line on baitcasting reel for better casting
Do you recommend using mono backing for baitcasting reels if you want to use braid?
Best way I have ever heard this explained. I thought exactly what you were saying. Great video 🤙
Glad you liked it!
Agree with you but I won't use less than 30lb as I have had 20lb snap as well.
If I use 20 pound braid on a baitcasters, will it affect my casting versus a 10 pound braid for small things like Panther Martin's or Mepps Aglia? I just got snagged in some weeds and had to break the line, but noticed after how much it had dug into the reel.
Thanks,,,, I used 10 pound powerpro on my baitcaster and it birdsnest, and snapped in the spool. Literally everything you said happened lol.
Getting ready to get baitcaster...thanks
Great advice.
Best video thanks for the up front info and tbh only video I’ve seen that has this info.
Do you think 65 braid is good option? Thanks
That actually happened to me when I was fighting a striper, the line dug in the spool and it couldn’t take any drag, and it pulled the hook out
Fantastic Video. Bait Casting especially for beginners DO NOT USE thin braded line. Even though your rod spec is 4-12lb. Use 20lb braid line or more and you don't have headache for the backlash (bird nest). It is very very frustrated when you often got the backlash. It becomes no fun in fishing.
i use 30lb braided line and i have the tension to a good setting but i can’t cast without birdnesting and knoting
@@lxcas1123 it's evidently your technique
I’ve only ever used forty pound braid. I wonder what pound braid digs in the least without being too heavy. Is there too heavy? I suppose capacity and buoyancy is a factor. What does everyone think? 🤔
I noticed the sweet spot is 30lb braid for most medium to small baitcasters. Too little has issues and too big has issues. My baitcaster can support up to 65lb braid but when I use 50 or higher it birdnests like crazy and seems to spook/deter the fish they see it too easy. I haven't used below 30lb but heard the horror stories of low lb braid bird nesting and digging into the reel.
Great video Thanks!
What brand Baird line do u have on ur baitcaster
will 50lb braid on a baitcaster cause probllems in casting as opposed to 20lb braid? Having problems learning baitcaster. Watched all videos. I get it so I get no bird nests, but I can't cast longer than 15 or 20 yards. My spinning reel is also loaded with 50 lb test, even though both reels say 15lb mono limit. Is it me, or would things improve if I dropped down in line weight. Using RUNCL baitcaster (Merced) and spinning reel (Rushmore). Thank you. Trying not to get too frustrated has at least improved my success in clearing bird's nest when I get them.
Ah....this is great advice. I currently fly fish and "spin" fish, but I'm interested in getting a good baitcasting reel to go with the sweet St. Croix rod that I received as a gift. My future baitcasting self thanks you for posting this video.
It’s a fun transition. I’m a fly fisherman, too, who recently started inshore saltwater fishing with a baitcaster after moving to the gulf coast for part of the year. I’m a giant St. Croix fan, too. I fish their fly rods and casting rods. I recommend visiting a good indie fishing shop that will let you sample cast different reels. I tried a bunch of nice reels and went with a Shimano Curado DC as my “daily driver.” Fantastic pairing with the St. Croix mojo rods!
Go with the Shimano corrado DC. I also like the six gill hammar
I usually go by the braided line diameter, I have noticed throughout the years of use that most baitcasting reels - excluding bfs reels - were not designed to handle anything less than 10lb monofilament. This is roughly the same diameter of 30 to 40 lb braided line depending on the line manufacturer.
Same!
Ditto
Is older generation like spectra lined better for baitcaster than say a Pe fibre? I am thinking loading my baitcasters wirh something like a power pro or sufix spectra ?
Thanks bud!!!
I was just about to order a 15lb braided.
Will move up to 30 now.
Right on!!
Good luck!
I was searching for this exact info because I heard something about that before.... And I am exact position you described , fishing all my life, finally got my first baitcaster and wanted to check this info b4 I spool.... Good looking bro
What did you end up going with, and how has it been?
About to respool too.

Thank god for videos like this! I’ve been struggling with losing lures because my line would snap and my lure would go flying. Today I switched from mono to braided and it still did it. I’ll have to go up to 20 or 30 and see if that makes a difference. The only thing I could think of was maybe I was over powering my casts? But that sounds ridiculous. Or I thought it was something with the brakes. But I’ll definitely try a heavier test.
Thanks for checking it out!
Same thing keeps happening to me after about 2-3 casts in my line abruptly snaps right off and lures go flying. First I thought it was a guide problem so I switched rods and same thing happened just snaps right off I mean I’m sending it pretty good but nothing the reel shouldn’t be able to handle. I see this was a long time ago I just started fishing bout 6 months ago
Hi, just a quick question. Do you use FC leader on baitcaster spooled with braid? Thanks!
Yes that's also my Question
I’ve been using #10-15 braid on my inshore casting reels for years without a problem. Granted I’m doing mostly bucktailing and/or jigging and not actually casting (although I will do underhand flips). But evenb when I do get snagged I have not experienced the braid digging into the spool.
WOW. My first baitcaster reel arrives today. Was going to use 12 # braid inshore fishing. Thank you
20# it shall be...!
I just started bait casting and I have 20lb braid on my bass setup. My snook fishing buddies use no less than 50lb braid on their saltwater bait caster setups, most of them 65lb
Thanks. Just ran into this, lost two lures from it digging in. Going to replace
Hey have you tried the baitcast reel shimano
Curado dc and compared it to the concept tx or tx2?
I believe it the origin tx, the concept has the handle in another colour
Thank you sir!
What are the advantages of having a leader rather than just tyinng whatever to the braid and how much of the leader should I put on?
i like to put enough leader to the point where it wont go into my reel while i cast, and having a mono/fluoro line as a leader is good because the fish wont see the line as much, if they see straight braid on the lure it will throw them off because theres nothing natural about what they see.
I think having good internal brakes (centrifugal or magnetic) is the key for using braid on a baitcaster. I agree with the 20# rule but have even had the same problems with 30# if internal brakes are not used properly
of course, but with
I use 15 lb braid on my Daiwa procaster and It kinda depends on how you spool it up because I don't have any problems with it and also how tight the drag is i often have it set a little lighter then my spinning reels BTW love vids
most people lock down their drags on casting reels for the hookset and then back it off if it's a bigger fish
This is very helpful I was trying to figure out why the heck my line kept burying its self in the spool am getting caught when I casted
Thank you for watching!
Yep, it happened to me with 10 lbs braid.
My first experience with braided line was 60 lbs on a Shimano baitcaster that belonged to the Captain of the boat we chartered. I hooked into and landed a 29 lbs yellowtail on a bass rod. I was a fan after that.
Thanks for the feedback!
I've used 20# on my baitcasters and had the problem with it digging into the spools. I just figured it was braided line in general. Never stopped to think it was the pound test of the line.
After watching this , returned 0.20mm sufix 131 and ordered 0.23mm. is this 0.23mm ok ?
G'day from Australia... I use a mixture of pflueger and Daiwa baitcaster reels and have them Spooled with 10lb and 15lb braids respectively....I have never had a problem with my braids behaving as described on my baitcast reels... Many other Bass Tournament anglers I know in Australia also use 10lb and 15lb braids on their baitcasters as well...I don't know what your doing to receive the results you are receiving but we certainly have no head aches with our equipment like you blokes do!!!
I guess you’re just the best than, Wonder how it feels.
@@allthethings6826 Gee I feel really good thankyou...
I got the same TX origin casting reel what type of line should I put on it ??
????
I’m so glad I’m using 20 pound braid on my baitcaster.
@Julian Rivera yeah I'm using 20 pound and my line keeps digging into my spool and causing me alot of trouble, I'm switching to 30 pound today.
THANK YOU!!!!!! It makes so much sense now. Have done most of my fishing with a spinner, generally 20-30lb braid, swapped to bait caster, no real issues. Swapped to 10lb braid today and couldn't cast to save my life. Thought I bought garbage line/was just in a rush to get out on the water and did a bad spool. As so as you said don't go lower than 20lb my brain went "THATS THE ISSUE DUMMY!"
Glad it helped!
How would u get it out if the line is dug in
For my first baitcaster should I get 40 pound line?
Also prefer 4x hard type braids..i have tried many 12x smooth braids and they dig and they dig bad..Also 4x braids are cheaper.Power pro Z 4x , gosen hard type w4 great choices !
Would it be fine if I use 50lb braid
thanks
Thank you I’ve lost maybe 70 dollars in lures in the last 3 days just from casting my braid would snap in the reel and I’d loose my lure so now I know I just need thicker line so I hope that fixes my problem
The same thing is happening to me. Did using bigger braid fix your problem?
How does that happen? How heavy are the lures? 3 oz? Damn that's crazy. And $70? You must have a ton of lures and money because I would've stopped quick and looked for the problem. I go crazy if I lose my $5 lures, I walked into the water just to get my cheap $3 frog once 😂
@@austinhernandez2716 well it’s not heavy lures there are but aren’t it breaks at the bass if the reel not where the lure is
@@connorfarleycrankingbass3553 I have no idea why, that's crazy
What if it's line capacity posted by the manufacture is 12# /125 yds. That's not much line if you do a 20# braided correct? What would you do in that situation?
Great question! Make sure to ask this over in the Community (www.saltstrong.com/) where the coaches spend their time.
I have a tatula with a 7' ML zodias and it handles 15 lb braid beautifully. That being said, when using lighter line its imperative to have a reel with a good adjustable braking system and set it a little tighter than normal. The lighter the braid, the more squirrely it is on a baitcaster
What is the brand of the braid on the baitcaster?

What lb braid should I use on my reel that takes 12 lb mono?

Is dark green the best all around color braid to use when fishing inshore? Also, 30lb is my go to, is that what you would recommend? Thanks!
when you're using a leader it often doesn't matter. Generally trying to match to water color makes it less visible, but often fish just don't care about a tiny string that just looks like a reed or whatever. Bright contrasting colors can be great too to help you see your line. White is a good in between that lets you see it while also looking pretty natural
One more question...I don’t normally use a leader...I tie my lure directly to the main braid line. Is this a mistake? Should I use a leader and how should I go about setting it up (type, length,etc.). Thanks!
@@robertalcala5990 a flourocarbon leader sinks and disappears better but, for price , quantity and line strength, can’t go wrong with trilene big game mono, my person fav spinning inshore set up is with a penn pursuit 4000, reel with 30 lb power pro green with a clear 20lb trilene big game mono leader , use a unionist.

This comment section is awesome. I am newer to baitcasting and I bought 10lb braid thinking that was great. I have caught some GREAT bass with this setup but I sledgehammer today due to my line digging into my reel. Sad to watch $15 soar across the pond. Guess I need heavier line.
That small diameter and digging into a spool is good advice!!

Best braided line for baitcasting reel (shimano slx 151xg)
Thanks, I may switch up to 25/30lb. I’ve been have a lot of problems with 20lb
Yeah. 20 pound is too small. 30 pound suffix 835 works perfect for me.
What if my rod is ultra light. 2-8lb line. So should i use 20lb?
You can get away with 10lb if you want to go any higher than 15lb. But the lighter the better!
On using light braid in baitcasters just use a shallow spool bait caster like a 70 size or order one of the many aftermarket spools for Daiwa or shimano. Lots of Texas guys have switched to this especially throwing buggs lures.
Yeah. That's japanese BFS style fishing. It's crazy how light of a lure they can throw. Might as well be fly fishing at that point.
Agreed, I use a scorpion BFS and silvermax with a chinese shallow spool with 10# braid throwing ned rigs. Just recently picked up a curado 70MGL for "heavier" stuff.
@@traitorhound curado 70 is next on my list. I have a custom ML castaway with spiral wrapped guides and the curado DC handles any of the baits on it just fine. The UL from old 18 is pairs with the curado dc fairly well but I think the curado 70 will go on that when I finally get one.
@@chris_2413 yea I had similar feelings on my light supressor before I broke it with the curado DC. I feel like those 150 sized DC reels are better for throwing 3/8+ total lure weights. It was awesome though for learning how use a casting reel

just start using baitcaster reel and rod .want to switch over to braided line but the reel says 14 pound mono .do you think it will be ok if use 30 pound braided line instead ????
I literally just did this and it was a huge mistake. 30lb is too thin of a diameter, 30 is = to 8 lb mono and my bait caster calls for 10lb mono at minimum. Every time I set the hook , the line digs all the way through the spool. I’m new to bait casting too and after digging out 50 or more birds nests today I decided it had to be the small line diameter. Don’t give up, I got a few beautiful casts that were further than I’d ever thrown and I know if I just go bigger most of my problems will go away.

Thanks for the feedback!
Would 80lbs braid with 0.4mm diameter be overkill for baitcasting freshwater fishing? Asking because I already own some but going to use a baitcaster for the first time. What would be the disadvantages? Thank you
80LB Braid is great for EXTREMELY heavy cover. When you’re casting jigs and frogs around timber, punching grass mats, etc. you can pull through all of that when you hook a fish even if it’s big. To be honest, that’s probably the only real application for that heavy of a braid and either 50 or 65 lb will be more than enough when fishing decently heavy cover. I fish a lot of spots with plenty of submerged logs, rocks, and grass myself but have never needed more than 50lb braid (I’m actually thinking of going down to 40lb). Also, just having an educated thumb when casting will keep you from backlashing very often so make sure you practice.
I use 4 different fishing rods and all of them have baitcasting reels mainly because I find as long as you fine tune the breaks and spool tension nob just right on a baitcaster it is much easier to prevent birds nest than it is on a spinning reel heck I have my baitcasters so fine tuned I don't even have to use my thumb anymore.
But personally I use 30 lb test braid of panfish, 40 lb test for trout, 65 lb test test for pike, and 80 lb test for catfish but keep in mind the braid I use is thinner than the standard diameters for braid so with the line I use a 30 lb test braid is equivalent in diameter to 8 lb test monofilament, 40 lb test braid is equilvalent to 10 lb test monofilament, 60 lb test braid is equilvalent to 15 lb test monofilament, and 80 lb test braid is equivalent to 20 lb test monofilament.
And personally the reason I use heavier line than what is considered necessary for different species all comes down to personal preference for me I just tend to naturally prefer heavier line for every species of fish I fish for because I have always been plagued by bite offs when fishing so I tend to go heavier on what line I use.
Thank you for sharing your feedback and tips!
Nice I just put on some 8 pound stuff great
@J T thank you it seems to be working great
i would say this is not about pounds, more likely about line diameter...
Manufacturers in USA hide the diameter not like in Europe....It must be due to the measuring system. For example, here in Lithuania we buy 0.22 mm but in USA it would be 0.0086 inches. Too many zeros
I agree with this.
False
@@jaymzpatterson2120 diameter has a lot to do with it. If for one second that it doesn't. You don't know squat. It's fact that the smaller diameter digs into itself easier
Does 30lb work
Then why does my banister say 10-25lb line? It must be talking about mono. I wish it would mention braid too.
I agree 100%, I never go lighter than 30 lb. Braid!!!
👍
35lb braid is the lightest I would go on a baitcaster and thats very rare. 35lb-45lb for swimjig/reaction baits and 50lb-65lb for jigs, flipping and frogs.

@@Mr.Higgs. i just don’t understand why i keep bird nesting with my 30 lb braid
When spoiling braid on a baitcaster your supposed to cover the base of the spool with mono then or floro as a base for the braid to sit on and not slip on your spool and also keep it from digging into the spool
Some manufacturers have fixed that issue.
No need to put mono on it to use braide just tie the knot the right way that’s all
I wish I had watched this before I got my first baitcaster and spooled it up with 15lb braid.. Took it out for the first time today, and I think I put too much pressure when spooling it up.. The line dug into itself.. Might try some heavier stuff.
