- Training and education to become an #orthopedicsurgeon requires 14+ years after High School graduation, and definitely worth it if you're doing what you love to do. Don't buy the "glamorized, easy peasy" social media versions of #medicaltraining you may sometimes see, but it's very doable! If you have surgery in-your-heart, it's worth the (long) journey. 14 years is pretty much a minimum for orthopedics. Many residents include an additional year or two of research.
Duh! And don't forget to get all As in Math, Biology, labs, etc. and MCAT
Thankfully, absolutely does not require all A’s. All A’s helps with competitiveness, but most admitted will not be 4.0 students. Thanks for taking the time.
Old video but just came across it. One of my biggest regrets was not taking it seriously enough and pursue a medical field career. Graduated highschool with college credit hours in human anatomy and physiology. Was working at a butcher shop through highschool. I was also a pretty good welder. So I got sucked into structural welding, working all over the country. Tried to get back into medical stuff got sucked back in to building tanks for refineries all over the country. Lots of stuff in between but now I own my own business doing welding and weld inspections. Have had several severe traumas in my field of work, make more than most surgeons and docs. Difference is that they'll be healthy and walking when they're 55, I won't....

I avoided all this schooling by being born without the smarts required to be an orthopedic surgeon.
Apprentice would be far easier and less school but the government makes no money that way
I was treated like I was a liar by two orthopedic surgeons until aftery surgery because I was a workman's comp case. Like i really wanted to get impaled by plate glass and go on 60% pay and have mobility issues...
When I woke up after surgery the orthopedic surgeons eyes were big. He assumed there was just scar tissue to remove. Instead he found that tendon connecting my quad to my patella had been nearly severed. Didn't show up on any scans. I couldn't fully extend my leg. Couldn't bear weight on that leg alone. Sometimes my knee would give out. Had that tendon been completely severed I would have lost complete function of my leg.
The whole incident was a case in medical ignorance. The ER doctor that was a resident telling me to go back to work on Monday - accident happened on Friday. When, after I asked for an xray, the ER doctor asked why... and i said to verify whether there was glass in the wound (this was in 2000) was told it wouldn't show up but theyd humor me... Even the xray tech didn't think glass would show up on an xray. Lo and behold there was, and it did show up on the xray. And when the ER doctor removed it, it had been resting on a vein...
The injury could have gone very, very badly. I recovered in spite of medical ignorance and lack of belief in the patient.
Me, with no college education at the time, barely making more than minimum wage.
In my experience, ER doctors and nurses are either amazing or terrible. No middle ground. The hospital also treats you like shit the second they realize you can't pay and don't have insurance.
A man once told me "why be a docter be a plumber instead". CHANGED MY LIFE.
Some doctors are literally plumbers but for human.

I’ve been blessed to have had a very talented young Orthopedic surgeon when I needed my knees replaced in my early fifties Then 5 years later I slipped on ice landed on my femur and shattering it because the knee didn’t give It was a mess but it healed beautifully with some screws and plates and a 20” scar😂
Can someone tell my dad this ..he is 75yrs old and back then you can skip undergrad and go straight to med school .if you are immigrant it's for sure the case.

It's really not about the money after that. Pay your educational debt then enjoy your profession
lol not worth it unless u believe in an afterlife , don’t get married and not have kids, or really enjoy it and can’t see yourself doing anything else, you will work 80 hours a week if not more some weeks maybe 100, in those 6 years of post med school training and studying on top of it.

To be a neurosurgeon it takes 20 years to complete the school or to be a neurosurgeon and most of them are in their 40s are generally new in that sense. There are rare cases of them begin in their early-mid 30s. If yoy want to be younger than 40 as a neurosurgeon, yoy can go to the school by the age of 15 or 14 teen I believe
It actually only takes one more year of training to be a neurosurgeon. Orthopedics plus fellowship is 6 years after medical school and neurosurgery is 7 total

currently in my 2nd year of med school, hoping to do ortho or gen surg. any tips on securing a residency?
First of all, congratulations, it all gets better from here. No specific guidelines other than work hard and speak up, especially around others in positions where you want to one day be in. Don’t be shy about letting them know your interest in surgery and or orthopedics. Hope all goes well. Take care of your mental and physical health through the process. Stay sincere and humble. You might not know everything, but your sincerity and humility will make a positive impression on your seniors and faculties and make them come forward and help you.
In your opinion, are those 4 years of college really needed? Did they make you a better surgeon? Seems like it is an unnecessary obstacle due to historical reasons.
I can only speak to med schools in the US. Yes it is required
My dream is to get into medical school and work my way into an oral surgery program because my whole family is dentists and it seems like the perfect job.
