Diana Ross phrasing has always been something critics took note of. Very unique and beautiful singer. And she knows how to toy with a melody when she’s in the mood to, love her.
Me too. I start crying at the part, "Suddenly my world has gone and changed its face..." Behind her are the passing faces of the people she's encounter throughout her journey. But instead I imagine the people who have impacted my life.
I’ve always loved her voice. My mom, also named Diana, who is bit younger than Diana, grew up listening to Diana and her peers from her era. Those like Aretha, Dionne, Gladys, Tina and Gladys to name a few. And she said a lot of people didn’t consider Ms. Ross much of singer compared with the aforementioned singers. They thought she had only became famous did to her sleeping with Mr Gordy. Janet Jackson is another favorite of mine, who’s also been called a non-singer, compared to her contemporaries. One thing that I’ve learnt from my music teacher, is that being a singer is being able to hit notes on key, within your range, voice control, a good ear, a sense of rhythm(Timing) and pitch. And Janet possesses all these qualities. Unfortunately, a lot of people, especially people of color, by way of the black church, only think a person can sing, if they can sing loudly and powerfully which isn’t true.
@@shawnjones4527 One thing you will never see is Miss Ross over singing are overstepping the margins of her voice. She is a truly thoughtful singer. Time and time again she has proven that singing isn't always about how big your voice is, rather it's about control, preservation, and singing with PURPOSE!
I only heard that from Black people, because she doesn't over sing. Diana Ross is the example of one of the most versatile singers. When she said like yours like mine, that was the most emotive expression and best out of anybody who ever sang that song. Diana proved that, she can sing what other r&b singers can sing, but they can't sing in that commercial way without over gospelizing to sing those Barbara Streisand and Bette midler type songs to cross over on other charts, like Diana could only do.
This was challenging compared to Diana's typical way of singing, but she so DELIVERED. this is the most emotional version. Real heart wrenching/ RAW. Stephanie gave us a class act, she is the standard, the blueprint. True theater! Whitney's was effortless and clean. Jasmine was out of this world. And our newest DorothY in Ms. Michelle gave us a new spin with her choices. True theater as well.

@@petebrowne9918 Great analysis! I am really learning that Diana has that special tone and beautiful pitch with an overwhelming emotiveness that come out of her voice without a riff or vocal acrobat that is necessary, so she can sing those adult contemporary ballads without adding changes to those timeless classic songs that are mainstream and the writer does not want to make it out of an R&B or gospel song when it is not, although she still has R&B in her voice. That is why Michael Masser gave her those ballads to sing over other Black artists in her day, and he also wrote them for Whitney.
I have always said that The Wiz was probably one of the only opportunities Diana Ross got to flex her vocal ability. She beasted every song on this soundtrack. You can tell she enjoyed this body of work.
Just to clear that up for people who may not know, Diana Ross has a star from when she was a member of The Supremes singing group and one for herself as a solo act.
Diana explained the natural emotion of that song best to tell the story. Diana Ross is the example of one of the most versatile singers. When she said like yours like mine, that was the most emotive expression and best out of anybody, who sang it.
This song makes me cry EVERY TIME I hear it!! I love the Wiz soooo much!! Everything you said about how she articulated her feelings through the song really made sense to me. That's GIFTED singing.. when you can make someone feel something. Always taking notes! Thank you Jaron!! ❤
Thanks for reviewing this. Diana Ross was great as we know with the Supremes but this was her 3rd film acting production after Lady sings the Blues and Mahogany. She’s simply multi talented
No. When Dian sings it, I feel " home". Everybody else is just really loud. Where is the emotion, the feeling? Diana gives you the real raw emotion of loss and memories. I'll go for the performance that touches my mind, heart, and soul. Diana is Supreme.
I've always been fascinated by her voice. The tone...how. she can express anger, love, gentleness, sorrow, agony...without doing runs or yelling....she creates heartbreaking beauty with her voice.

Thank you so much, my brother, for critically analyzing the incredible vocals of Miss. Diana Ross. She is often ignored and underrated as one of the greatest singers and interpreters of song in the 20th/21st Century. Undoubtedly, this will always be Stephanie Mills's song, but Ross held her own and reinforced the interpretation that Dorothy was a thirty-year-old girl who spent most of her life in Harlem. Folks need to take a second look at this epic Black film. The media at the time were extraordinarily racist and did all they could to destroy the movie at the box office, but it has prevailed. In our time, two singers were defining the American female voice. Those are Diana Ross and Aretha Franklin. Everyone else falls on that spectrum. These two Detroit women took American music around the world and have catalogs that speak to their success. We lost Aretha, but Diana, at 80, is still representing the best in our ranks.

I really wonder what producer, director or person coached this performance out of her. I can feel someone telling her to push more. She totally delivers
As much as I love Stephanie Mills, this version makes me " ugly cry ". Diana put her heart and soul into this song and I think she was going through some stuff. Imagine being a mega star and trying to keep some balance of reality. Starring in this movie produced by your " secret baby Daddy ", MJ is your co star and in love with you and had probably started to speak out about her career direction. Love this woman. Look at the well adjusted kids she raised ❤ A lot of current singers embellish without emotion and phrasing. Billie Holliday, Dinah Washington, Frank Sinatra,Shirley Horn and many others sang like they meant it.
I thank God for giving us a right to our own opinions because Mrs Ross can't be carbon copied or duplicated. She's certainly in a class of her very own 🙏🏽. A QUEEN in my book👸🏽, but Stephanie Mills hands down, KIIIIIILED!! that song better without question 😒🤷🏾♂️

Stephanie owned this song and I agree with you
As much as I love Diana (been a life-long fan since early Supreme days), this performance/song/ movie was just a tragedy in my opinion ! The ‘over-singing’, the straining, etc. do nothing for this lovely song & triumphant moment in the film (which was also a bit of a mess imo). Stephanie Mills’ version is so much better! It suits her voice (range-wise), tells a story & brings acres of emotions. Just sayin’ 🤷🏾♂️
My daughters do not know that Judy Garland was ever Dorothy. They grew up thinking that Diana Ross was Dorothy and MJ was the Scarecrow! But I just absolutely love this movie!
Yikes never mind the grit on Diane Ross. Can we talk how irritating this so called dudes voice is. Who said she's a voice coach.? These nobody's self titled profession.
I disliked her version and also disliked this version of The Wiz... thought Mz Ross was to old to be playing that role. I love her as a singer and actress... just not with this movie!!!!

Can u react to any songs from The Wiz Broaway 2024 pls? Thank you ! I love your videos xoxox
Could you analyze Barbra Streisand Somewhere Jaron I really wanna here your input❤
React to flo bending my rules live performance on VEVO
Stephanie Mills blew Diana outta the water!
Its a pretty little song when she sings it and nothing more.
And you are just so correct !! Thanks for saying it!!! the truth is the light!!!❤
She sang that song😢
Ms Ross is legend but all I see is Pam and Gina when I hear this song.
Sir. You can't do Diana Ross' Home without doing Stephany Mills' Home.
Check the pinned comment! Her video was done a few years ago 🫶🏾
Love Diana but Stephanie Mills. Ms. Mills. She is something else
My daughters do not know that Judy Garland was ever Dorothy. They grew up thinking that Diana Ross was Dorothy and MJ was the Scarecrow!
But I just absolutely love this movie!
Well shame on you if they don't know the rich history of this magnificent movie!
WHY are you trying to break this down?
I like her version of Be A Lion better. Stephanie Mills got Home imo.
It is an awful film. Period. Ross was too old for the film and it is her last feature film.
My sentiment eggggzachly
Awful to the greatest length!!! I think she grabbed it to nail Michael 💅 🤔 ❤SHE fell for him!! my belief. Just sayin
Yikes never mind the grit on Diane Ross. Can we talk how irritating this so called dudes voice is. Who said she's a voice coach.? These nobody's self titled profession.
That was a great vocal run.... not Diana... YOU! 👏
I don't hear greatness. Sorry not sorry.
Let's keep it real. Diana's version was not that good. There I said it.
Well I love it. Best version in my opinion. There I said it!!!
I disliked her version and also disliked this version of The Wiz... thought Mz Ross was to old to be playing that role.
I love her as a singer and actress... just not with this movie!!!!
Thank you!!!No it is not!!
she stole the role from a much better talent, Ms. Mills❤
Diana cheated us out of a real black classic. Too old to be a convincing Dorothy. Voice is too nasally and tinny and shallow. Please…👎🏽
Eggggzachly!!!!!
This movie had such an impact on me. It is my childhood
I always knew she was the voice, she is the diva, but it has always been her voice that made her who she is today, Iconic...⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
