Stephanie is so underrated as a vocalist and an artist. She is of that top tier Vocalist. She has a unique voice and vocal approach, and she sangs with such passion, and great technique.
Her head voice is incredible, including her swift transition from chest to head voice. Her voice can be so thick, but still bright when she needs it to be. I wanted to toss my non-existent wig like Aretha wig when I 1st heard this. She was PERFORMING. She's a Natural. And she was singing at that magnitude while walking, jogging, jumping, and sitting.
Underrated? Stephanie Mills? How? she is considered one of the best!!!! Trust she is not underrated.
@@Mongo76 yup you're right but what he is saying she doesnt get talked about ENOUGH when it comes to those top tier vocalists. She hasnt gotten her flowers like the others. Ms Mills was singing like this at 16 doing the Wiz and to now still be singing like this at 65, she needs to be talked about as much as the others of her peer group. She was doing those chest to head transitions b4 whitney. Lets be real she not as revered as her peers (chaka, Anita, etc) yet she was able to make her mark on broadway and have a recording career and be highly successful with both many cant make that transition from broadway to recording artists and have her type of career. Flowers and honor is in order.

Agree 100%. She's a phenomenal vocalist and really doesn't get in enough discussions among the greats. But yes. she's got a lot of dimension, verasatility and facility in her instrument. A true talent and professional.

That broadway training has truly benefited her because she literally still sounds the same NOW. SHE performs to packed houses she just did a versus with Chaka. THIS SONG is a MASTER CLASS IN SINGING. PERIOD. Amazing

You don’t know Stephanie, like her fans do! I seen the “Wiz” over 75 times on broadway! Actually, I seen Miss Mills press the button to the stage door singing for them to let her in. Yes, STANDING ROOM, I was there. Her live performance can not be compared! Her energy is too high & strong. From one end of the stage to the other, leaping higher than she stands tall, plus carrying & holding musical HIGH NOTES! No other Artists can be compared and shouldn’t be! Although she’s gracious enough to share a stage, there’s no shade! Yet, Miss Mills become most ENERGIZED when the audience reacts to her & comes alive.
Stephanie has always been a Vocal Beast. As others have mentioned, she is amazingly underrated and overlooked. But for those of us that appreciate sangers (cause she doesn’t sing) and true artistry, she’ll never be overlooked.
Please stop with the underrated and overlooked comments. Your telling me a Multi platnium selling artist is overlooked? You better educate yourself on the icon Miss Mills cause that 2 things she isn't. Yet here we are thousands have already tuned into this video with her name on it.
I loved and appreciate that I was old enough to appreciate the Singers like Stephanie Mills, Miki Howard, Phyllis Hyman, Vesta Williams, Angela Bofill, Stacy Lattisaw, Rachelle Ferrell, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Angela Winbush, Cherelle, Pattie Lebelle, Tracy Spencer, Allyson Williams, Regina Belle, Anita Baker, Minnie Riperton, Meli'sa Morgan, Shirley Murdock, Cheryl Lynn, Natalie Cole, Mary Davis of the SOS Band, Tawatha Agee of Mutune and Sharon Bryant of Atlantic Starr. All these Sistahs could sing and had the it factor. They all got Airplay too. I been listening to Stephanie more lately and still to this day, she makes me tear up at 52, because her voice has so much passion and emotions wrapped up in it. Thank God my Dad had all these Women in his Cassette and CD collections.

Have you done Dianne Reeves? An amazing singer I rarely hear referenced. Better Days is a phenomenal song, but I was happily surprised to find that her live performances of it are somehow even more of everything that the album version. Her Newport Jazz Festival performance from around 2000 knocked my socks off. But frankly I doubt there's a song or performance of hers that you wouldn't die for.

I was in broke college student and I got a chance to go to see the WIZ on Broadway on my college's dime . I never had been to Broadway and I had never heard her sing. When she sang this song she" broke the house down" and people were literally weeping in the aisles she sang it so well and it was so beautiful. I remember taking my children to see the WIZ when it came to our city a few years later I wanted them to see her sing it. Sadly the performance was not as dynamic as the New York performance but my children enjoyed it Thank you for reviewing this song . I always wanted to be able to sing it
