Are there any locomotives that can run of patographs or Diesel powered electric? It would seem like a better solution than the battery electric locomotives you hear about.
Battery electric is fake technology. They simply cannot match overhead line electrification.
Very late to a party. Electro-diesel locomotives exist, but they have higher running costs as they need to carry redundant equipment and their horsepower in diesel mode is much smaller compared to a regular diesel. Thus they have always been built only for niche and very specific applications.
Too bad the railroads of the Americas (it's not just the US and not even just North America) almost all de-electrify whenever they can. Unfortunately this was not one of the few exceptions.
One nit: Early in the video you mention rectifier technology, but the EL-2C locomotives used motor-generators, as you correctly state a bit before 2 minutes.
