Oh my god, those quilts!!! How amazing!!! This is a wonderful project, but I had trouble paying attention because i had to keep going back to look at the QUILTS!! Just utterly beautiful
How my Monday mornings will never be the same. I now start my week the a project. I love that because it gives me time to think and decide and then complete. Thank you Katherine.
I have been so enjoying joining in with the projects each week, slow stitching is really helping me to calm my mind. Several family members, including my dear mum are fighting health issues and my mind seems to be all over the place. In one of those 'moments ' the Emily Dickinson poem was quoted in the book I was reading last night, Hope, just what I need. Thanks Katherine.
Coffee and Kathryn on Monday mornings is something I look forward to. Love learning all these new techniques that I've not tried before. When I separate my embroidery floss, I pull them apart two strands in my right hand, four strands in my left, and the bottom hangs down like a Y. Sometimes I may have to pull it with my mouth just to stop it from twisting so much. But it never tangles. I have tried the technique of just pulling the strand straight up as you do. That works for me with one strand but it tangles every time if I try it with two strands. It’s interesting how we all do the same thing but a different way. As I say it doesn’t matter how you chop the onion the point is it’s chopped.
I think this is the way I do it too (it's difficult to describe in words). My mother taught me. Never a problem with two strands of DMC ... but some other brands tangle. BTW For this slowstitching I prefer using one strand. Probably because these are very small projects (to fit in my 'journal')
I really love this!! As a new stitcher I embrace Yoda's motto! It totally helps me to accept the outcome as it is!! "You do or you don't, there is no try'' May the force be with you, k3n!!! Love to you from Helene, a fellow LOTR and Star Wars lover, from the Netherlands!!
I agree with all you said! A number of years ago, I wrote about "four words worth losing: always, never, try and should." Learning to speak and think without those words has helped me in many ways. And...I'm also a fellow LOTR and Star Wars fan. Also Star Trek, mostly from the early years. May the force be with you. 🙂

I was tutored by Pam Watts years ago on free hand embroidery. I cannot explain why but nowadays I prefer to hand stitch . I always enjoy your videos. Thanh you
I prefer to hand stitch too, though I did enjoy my years doing FMQ. I guess I just changed, evolved or whatever, but actually I returned to my first love which is hand stitching. ❤️
Fantasy Feather is a terrific inspiration. At first, the sketch was reminiscent of a Matisse motif which I always thought was a leaf. It obviously translates well to a feather. As you progressed, it reminded me of Mexican and south handwork. How similar is the world of stitching. Your videos are so rich a resource.
When you you spoke of a weekly project based on your Woodland Books, I thought of making two half size pieces to mount side by side. "Unworldly and worldly."
Cuckoos cuckooing their heads off today in my little corner of Italy. I missed hearing the cuckoo in the UK, I remember waiting for 12 years between cuckoo calls. Slow cuckooing 😁
We have two here, I must look up how long they live because I think one of them has been coming for four years or more, it sings an extra note 'cuck- coo-coo' 😁
Kathryn, please don’t worry about noise from your family or your fur babies, it is part of life and I doubt anyone here is bothered by it. I know I’m not, I actually enjoy the noises of real life. I am really enjoying your tutorial videos, I must admit I haven’t tried any yet,but you are inspiring me to do something with my rather large fabric stash.

I might be catching up, I’m on number 10 , I’m going to use a feather that I embroidered around 30 yrs ago so it will be nice to use it in my book. Great tutorial thanks
It's been really neat to see how your fantasy feather has changed as you went along. Very lovely. Also, I enjoyed your comments about "should." I used to teach a variety of courses and counselled adults, and my frequent recommendation to them (and myself, of course) was, "Don't should on yourself or anyone else." Thank you for another marvelous project. Week 10 already! Wow. Enjoy your time with your children.
Like your tip for using a pencil on paper to draw the design, without taking the pencil off the paper. Also, a notebook to notice patterns anywhere in nature, or elsewhere. Noticing signs of Spring here too, finding a tiny feather outside yesterday. | am hurkle durkling watching this !
In the USA, we also gave pasties. Some have their origins in the coal mining areas. My hometown had iron ore mines. Wives made pasties to go into the men’s lunch boxes. Still in the upper peninsula of Michigan you can find many pasty shops. I live in Southern California and we have a shop near me.
The free hand quilt panels with the feathers are absolutely beautiful!! I love your handstitched feathers. The color combinations of the fabrics and your stitches are lovely. ❤😊
This is lovely! It was a pleasure to see your beautiful quilted pieces. I remember learning to free motion quilt feathers all too well. I never drew a guideline but instead stitched my way along and the petals would get wonkier and wonkier shaped as I went along! Practicing by drawing them on paper eventually helped. I am so grateful that you post these weekly stitching projects, Kathryn, I am really enjoying them.
Happy you are enjoying. 😊 In the beginning, the right hand sides of my feathers were fine but the left sides were rubbish. 😂 But as I am sure you know, the only way to improve is practice. 😁♥️
Your quilts are just stunning and the colours wow. I love this week and already thinking about the colours to use and so happy to be having a go at spilt stem stitch and French knots. Beautiful poem Sally. Also I love to hear life going on in the background ❤
Oh my gosh! Those freehand machine quilts! I have tried several times to try it and can't manage to get even stitches. Love, love the feathers! Thank you for all you do. Love your videos. Oh and I have ordered my applique pins 😀
The trick in the beginning is not to worry about stitch length but just to doodle and play. I used to have my students make a sandwich of two layers of muslin with wadding between to practice on. 😉 Hope you like your pins. 😁♥️
Your quilts quite took my breath away - stunning k3n ❤ it looks reminiscent of paisley pattern which I adore, but better - I know you are always very busy but do you ever sell a piece? Those you showed are just fabulous. There is so much content to explore on your channel and I did find you after the slow stich journal was well underway! Hi. Now I’m on number 3 and can’t wait to get to number 9 because I love it , a great tutorial, I’ve started to try doing my hair like yours I’m an old hairdresser and I’ve never done that twist , thank you . I’m from Cumbria. With a Scottish accent.
I swear I did leave a comment and I can’t see it now 🤷♀️ So strange 😳 I wrote something like this: I loved the feathers, they also look like beautiful leaves, that I would love to use as an appliqué on a bag. When you talked about free embroidery with the machine, I stopped the video, and I tried it on my inexpensive and really basic machine and it worked! But my question was if I had to use a sturdy cloth, because it could be really wonky (not in a good way) in a finer fabric. I loved the homely sounds! You look like a matriarch 😊💙💚🩷❤️🩵🧡🤍💜💛🤎
I don't see another comment from you I don't think. Though sometimes comments don't appear in my notifications then I go to the RUclips editing app, and they are there.. for the free machine embroidery, you can do it in a hoop or frame if you only want to use a single cloth but I never got on with that. I always made a 'sandwich' of a top cloth, a thin quilter's wadding and a back cloth. You could also use flannel or thin blanket instead of the wadding. ❤️
I love the homely sounds! It makes me realise you have an earthly life besides the slowstitch goddess one😊 I was watching this video as i am making my very first ricebag. I watched that video a couple of times before i had enough courage to make one myself, very nice and relaxing. Do any of your children stitch as well? Enjoy their company!💖🍀

Hi Kathryn, I only found your channel after Week 4 of the Slow Stitch 2024 project ... and I have finally caught up and finished my Week 10 sample today ...and my journal (sans cover) last weekend. I love your work and your style of teaching and sharing. You are so very generous!! Thank you so much. I appreciate the many tips you're providing about how to do the processes ... and I enjoy your 'wittering' as you call it. I'm also enjoying your comments on language and your obvious connection to working with words. On that point, I'm wondering if you've come across 'The dictionary of lost words' by Pip Williams, published in 2020. The book won several Australian literary awards. I'm an Aussie in Geelong, Victoria ... and Pip was English-born and now a resident in Adelaide where she wrote the novel about how 'women's language' was excluded by the editors of the original Oxford Dictionary. You've already mentioned how evocative you find some women's expressions ... I think this book might interest, amuse and touch you. I'd send you a copy if I thought there was a way. I'm not a social media user ... nothing to do with tech ability ... but I'm starting to feel slightly tempted re the private group. Thank you again for everything, Sandra 😊😊
Hello Sandra and welcome, I don't know that book but it sounds right up my street in every way so I am going to look for it online to buy. I am so pleased you have joined the weekly project, and while I completely understand the social media thing, the Facebook group is a lovely, 'safe space ', like a virtual sewing circle. And I am going to do my level best to keep it that way as it grows. Thank you so much for the book recommendation. ♥️

I love the idea of creating books to leave about, I’ve been wanting to do that for a few years, maybe you’ll get me doing it! Sending hugs! 🩵
Yes, that's exactly it, feeling like I was talking to myself instead of the lovely people . 😁 I will check out the chapters, thank you, I was thinking you had to go through and put them in manually. Sending hugs to you too. Oh ps, because of you, I have ordered a little sofa for my studio. Had to be little so it will come up the stairs. Saw your studio tour and thought oh yes, a sofa is what I need. But like yours with your Schnoodles, I have a feeling it will be monopolised by Stella and Fredfred... 😂♥️
@@k3n.clothtales You are going to LOVE having a sofa in your space! I did audition a chair and that didn't work because the doggies just pile on top of me and I can't work! Yes it does take up some space (and I think about moving it out every so often, But that's NEVER going to happen!) It's great for a Power Nap too! See you again soon! 🩵
I had thought about the occasional power nap 😂❤️
I was tutored by Pam Watts years ago on free hand embroidery. I cannot explain why but nowadays I prefer to hand stitch . I always enjoy your videos. Thanh you
I prefer to hand stitch too, though I did enjoy my years doing FMQ. I guess I just changed, evolved or whatever, but actually I returned to my first love which is hand stitching. ❤️
Oh I enjoyed this very much.
I'm quite "gruntled" when working on this weekly project....😊
😁😁😁❤️
Fantasy Feather is a terrific inspiration. At first, the sketch was reminiscent of a Matisse motif which I always thought was a leaf. It obviously translates well to a feather. As you progressed, it reminded me of Mexican and south handwork. How similar is the world of stitching. Your videos are so rich a resource.
Thank you Ann, I hope you enjoy creating one of your own ♥️
Thank you Katherine, for another inspiring and educational video.
Sally Ann's poem is indeed genius. My brain doesn't work well enough any more to juggle words.
Thank you for our new project.
When you you spoke of a weekly project based on your Woodland Books, I thought of making two half size pieces to mount side by side. "Unworldly and worldly."
I am thinking of two separate weeks, a few months apart... Like the idea of worldly and unworldly 😊♥️
Thank you Sue, that's good to hear. I am pleased you are enjoying the videos ❤️
Absolutely beautiful :)
Awesome Sally Ann
Beautiful !!! Thanks so much for sharing 🪡🧵♥️
I really love this page of embroidery. Thank you for sharing with us.
Love this. 😊
This is so beautiful!
Thank you Kate 🥰
Like your tip for using a pencil on paper to draw the design, without taking the pencil off the paper. Also, a notebook to notice patterns anywhere in nature, or elsewhere. Noticing signs of Spring here too, finding a tiny feather outside yesterday. | am hurkle durkling watching this !
😁 happy hurkle durkling ♥️
Lovely class again, thank you so much. Your fantasy feather quilts are very beautiful and I loved the poem.
Thank you 😊
In the USA, we also gave pasties. Some have their origins in the coal mining areas. My hometown had iron ore mines. Wives made pasties to go into the men’s lunch boxes. Still in the upper peninsula of Michigan you can find many pasty shops. I live in Southern California and we have a shop near me.
That's interesting, I wonder if pasties were brought over on the Mayflower by the Pilgrims? ❤️
Hello from Beautiful British Columbia Canada 🇨🇦
❤🎉😊
I watched you do the invisible basting stitch awhile back and have used it allot since, I really do like this stitch, thank you.
The free hand quilt panels with the feathers are absolutely beautiful!! I love your handstitched feathers. The color combinations of the fabrics and your stitches are lovely. ❤😊
Thank you so much 😊
I love it! Your fmq feathers are just beautiful!
Thank you ❤️
This is lovely!
Thank you Carol 😊
Woo Hoo I was waiting for this!
I love your feather, K3n. It really is beautiful. Thank you for all your great videos, I look forward to them every week. xx ❤
Thank you so pleased you are enjoying them 😊
You are so beautiful inside and outside, your work is exquisite. You are so fun to learn from I will be here every week to catch up ❤
Thank you and welcome 🤗
Your quilts quite took my breath away - stunning k3n ❤ it looks reminiscent of paisley pattern which I adore, but better - I know you are always very busy but do you ever sell a piece? Those you showed are just fabulous. There is so much content to explore on your channel and I did find you after the slow stich journal was well underway! I've ordered a hard copy of the magazine with your feature - can't wait for it to arrive ❤ big love as always from Scotland
Thank you Margaret, yes I have sold work from time to time, mostly through exhibitions. I am thinking about offering some pieces for sale online one day as I have so much that I can't display it all and it's a shame to keep it all in boxes and rolled up under beds. 😉 Much love ❤️
@@k3n.clothtales if you do decide to at any time may I have the opportunity to purchase one of those quilts - the second one shown - I would use it as a wall- hanging and take such pleasure in seeing it each day and appreciating it's provenance! ❤️❤️❤️
@@margaretmcgregor5686 that would make me very happy. I will look up which one that is, if you could email me, I can bring it to England and send it to you from there. I am not sure of the price but I have a list somewhere. My email is k3n@k3n.fr ❤️
@@k3n.clothtales will do brilliant ❤️
Totally enjoyed hearing your kid sounds, your "wittering" and seeing your quilts. Great video. The people on the fb group are so fun and talented. I love the way you challenge us.
Oh and a secret...I'm working on a rice bag😅
Thank you Judy, looking forward to seeing it ❤️
Hi. Now I’m on number 3 and can’t wait to get to number 9 because I love it , a great tutorial, I’ve started to try doing my hair like yours I’m an old hairdresser and I’ve never done that twist , thank you . I’m from Cumbria. With a Scottish accent.
Hello Faye, I have had many happy holidays in the Lakes, love that you are doing the 'twist' 😁♥️
I swear I did leave a comment and I can’t see it now 🤷♀️ So strange 😳
I wrote something like this: I loved the feathers, they also look like beautiful leaves, that I would love to use as an appliqué on a bag.
@@k3n.clothtales Thank you, Kathryn, I will do that 🙏🏻💙🤗
Lovely 9-patch poem, Sally Ann ❤❤❤
I love the homely sounds! It makes me realise you have an earthly life besides the slowstitch goddess one😊 I was watching this video as i am making my very first ricebag. I watched that video a couple of times before i had enough courage to make one myself, very nice and relaxing. Do any of your children stitch as well? Enjoy their company!💖🍀
Slowstitch goddess 🤭🤗 my daughter crochets a little bit and the other day, we were talking about her maybe starting art journalling. You may have a new subscriber. 😉 I promised to set her up with some supplies and help her make her first journal next time she is home. She is currently skiing with a friend. My son has asked to be taught to knit once or twice but I think it was just an idea, not sure he really wants to. 😁♥️
@@k3n.clothtales I only just started sewing / textiles /embroidery very recently myself (when i discovered you!😀) eventhough i was surrounded by my grandmothers embroidery when i grew up . And now i can’t do without it, i am so enjoying it! Welcome to your daughter!🍀💖
Just love it ❤❤❤❤ and of course you as well 💝
Thank you so much!! 😊
Words, because if you I googled orts
Most impressed thank you x
What a wonderful poem! You always inspire me, but I’ve been putting off free motion embroidery on a machine for a while. This video is a kick in the pants to try it out. Thank you. I enjoy your videos so much.
Your quilts are beautiful, and I love the feathers ❤I agree about Glastonbury, my daughter and I go down there once a year,if we can, lovely place ❤. Thank you for sharing your videos 😊
Thank you, miss Glasto, maybe I will have time for a visit when I am over in a couple of weeks. Have a serious craving for a pasty since I mentioned it 😂
I am almost finished with last week’s, and will finally be up to date when starting this week!!😂
Thank you again for everything, Sandra
😊😊
Hello Sandra and welcome, I don't know that book but it sounds right up my street in every way so I am going to look for it online to buy. I am so pleased you have joined the weekly project, and while I completely understand the social media thing, the Facebook group is a lovely, 'safe space ', like a virtual sewing circle. And I am going to do my level best to keep it that way as it grows. Thank you so much for the book recommendation. ♥️
Well well more stars to you liked it very much as I love feathers . As I said of to the rusted cloth down the river this time nearly fell in. Ha ha but they. Came out really amazing just like if some one painted them ,. Thanks a lot Peter Scotland xxx
Pleased your rusty cloth came out well but please don't fall in! 😂♥️
