Leaving isn't easy. They make you sacrifice so much for it, that it makes leaving very difficult. Time, money, effort. Not only would a member have to face the harshness of all that being a waste, but they'd also have to give up all the conditional friendships they made and learn to venture out into a world without a large group of people who will like them as long as they conform. It's a cult basically, and cult's aren't easy to leave.
Leaving is a bit like leaving a village somewhere in the desert and hoping you'll find something out there before you starve. When making friends there is so easy, it makes finding a replacement social life outside of it seem so daunting.

In Washington and Lee University, the school with one of the highest Greek life participation, members have to pay an average of $3,314 per semester for Panhellenic sorority house non-residents and $14,772 for residents. Average financial charges are even higher for male students who want to join fraternities, with non-house residents needing to prepare $8,815, and house residents, $17,370.

I remember when arriving to college, I became part of a rush for one of the main universities on campus.
I don’t regret not joining for a second. The people were nice (enough) but the whole vibe was cultish, the dues were RIDICULOUSLY expensive, and the only bit of “community service” we did was when we worked in a restaurant for 12 hours for just $50 (which was immediately funneled towards our due payments without us asking).
I a part of a fraternity now, but unlike the first one, the dues were only around $40 yearly, we ACTUALLY did community service quite regularly, and overall was just really chill and pleasant.
