All it had was Art Direction. Fuck that art direction was good, but the pacing is abysmal

to be fair to the 1999 anime, the ChimeraAnt arc was nowhere near even pen on paper when it was airing, i think the arc after york new jsut started at the time and they wanted to avoid making filler arcs for the show just so hte manga could go further
1999 all the way. I learned about HxH from the 2011 anime, but it was on episode 6 or so and that was too slow so I moved to the 1999 anime that was complete and also watch the OVA that's all the way to Greed Island. Went back to 2011 and now didn't like how bright everything was.
1999 probably had to worry about the manga that did not have that much content and padded it out. The manga came out only a year before in 1998. 2011 didn't have that problem so that's why it moved faster.
The 99 version is GOATED
The 99 anime is great if you don't see the early arcs as just the preamble to the "good parts" of HXH, the direction and atmosphere of 99 is consistently more striking and dynamic than 2011, displaying a much wider range of colours and tones(the Hanzo fight is the best example of this, it is brutal in 99), a lot of the anime original stuff it adds is straight up some of the best stuff made for early Hunter X Hunter and 2011 anime cuts the Kite chapter which significantly devalues of his reappearance later on, I don't blame Woolie for bouncing off it 15 something years ago, I just wanted to say that HXH 1999 is awesome and I think fans of the series should definitely watch it
1999 has poor pacing yes, but the colors, the design and the direction is delicious
The 1999 version of HxH does a lot of stuff better than the 2011 version. ForgottenRelics has a great video analyzing them where you can see how much more attention to detail was put into the 1999 version. But the pacing is just dreadful. It really needs a fan edit with the pacing fixed, just like One Pace does for One Piece.
