"Don't be afraid, guys" is the best advice. So many folks are worried about getting it "wrong", as was I a couple of decades ago. then I embraced my 5 year old and just did. it was the best thing I'd ever done. Trust your eye. Perfection is an illusion (or takes thousands of hours to achieve in oil). You are the only judge of what you like and don't. But don't ever trash what you think is horrible because someone will always like it. You can sell what you think is horrible for cheap, or give it away (I do that because I have SO many canvases). But someone will always love it.
Hi Ellen. I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed your tutorial on the Bokeh effect, which I've wanted to learn for a while, just hadn't jumped in yet. I also suddenly recognized what an awesome teacher you are and wondered why I haven't joined your Patreon group yet. Anyway, I did that today and am excited to learn what's in store for me. Thanks for all your hard work in preparing the tutorials. I really appreciate you dedication and hard work you put into them. Thank you again and have a great day. I'll be seeing you on your Patreon channel. Gayla Burson
Dear Ellen, thank you so much for the wonderful tutorial. I love your humor! An hour of painting with you is the best good humor therapy that exists in this dark season :-)
😊 thank you I try! I had just finished this video when my my mom told me my uncle passed from a horrible car accident he had gotten into yesterday. We thought he was going to be okay but then he took a turn for the worst. Any humor & fun I can give those who are hurting right now makes me happy. Have a great holiday & thanks for subscribing.
@@ellencrimitrent Oh Ellen I am so sorry to hear about your Uncle’s passing suddenly. My mother passed just two day’s before Christmas in 2006, it’s awful when we loose our loved ones this time of year. I am keeping you and your family in my prayers. Hug’s. 🙏 🤗 😘
Thanks for this fun and easy Christmas cards! I had a lot of fun painting both cards and went wild with the snow specks. 😅 your guide was very helpful during the process!
I absolutely love the free form of this. Nothing technical other than what color goes with what color. Do as you like. So free. For perfectionists like me who prefer realism, this is a breath of fresh air. Load up your paints and go. No rules (other than the rule of thirds and knowing how the paint behaves). Thanks for sharing!
Very nice job. I saved. I go a bit abstractee😅with my trees I guess they will do. However, I got a little frustrated and decided to paint bulbs real Christmas bulbs. Neat earth tones colors. I know I’m back to cheese thank you❤😊
I love how you just do it, paint, and not explain every little thing in detail! We can see what you’re doin as you talk about it. We can see what you’re doing as you are talking about it. So refreshing. These are going to be the first examples I try of the bokeh effect.❤
I have so enjoyed your relaxed style & sayin' such positive input for us beginners. Thank much and Happy Christmas (yes, I am a Christian) from Annandale, Minnesota!!!!! :-)
Oh Ellen.. you have me in AWE!! I'd love to do these but I'm just not sure of my level of "creativity".. one day I will though.. I just love these sooo much!! Thank YOU!!
I had to revisit this video. And I know it won`t be my last time... LOL This is so beautiful and so much fun. How does anybody even come up with a technique that could make magicians envious?
There is a lot of complex art going on in this tutorial. The plays on color, texture, and light are spectacular. I only started watercolor painting 2 months ago but I have a long history in jewelry design, art glass, and sugar flower making. Thank you so much for this absolutely spectacular tutorial. I've made three cards from this tutorial. Every single one is different and I'm trying to capture that AHA thing that you do there. I believe the trick is to make sure that the green surround is dark enough for the translucent gouache circles to pop from. I'm loving this. You make the world a better place!
I should never comment when I am tired. You paintings are perfect. I love to spatter and want to try bokay . Can't wait till tomorrow to give them a try. Thank you Ellen for making such interesting tutorials 😊
Thanks for sharing! 😊✨ so happy to find Your channel.✨ It`s a lovely turtorial, such beautiful art.✨ I`m getting back into my art & painting again and like to learn different technique using watercolours, acrylics paints. Last year, I starting making homemade Christmas cards, this year want to create winter wonderland with trees & snow & Angel, unicorn🦄❄✨ Have a wonderful weekend! I look forward to more of your art tutorials.🙏💖✨
Ellen, you are my favorite watercolorist with MY kind of humor! Your paintings are a pleasure to watch! You have honestly helped return me to the art I love! Your details, while demonstrating various watercolor techniques and colors to use , has helped me to get back to the art I love! Thanks so much for getting me at age 85, back to my favorite pastime!
I love watching you paint! It looks like a hot mess on the paper…until it doesn’t. And then, voila! At the end it’s magically gorgeous! Thank you for making such fun tutorials! Maybe one day, with practice, my final result will be half as beautiful. :-)
Love your laid back - no worries approach and find your videos extremely informative and useful. I note you use Scotch Magic Tape to fasten your paper down with - do you de-tack it a bit before you stick it to your paper or is it quite low tack? And I’m assuming it’s waterproof? The masking tape I use tends to come unstuck when I use watercolour. 😊
Your technique of Bokeh was really different than what I knew. The technique of the blur that I know is removing color color to create the effect. Interesting that you can create similar effect by adding color instead of erasing color.
I absolutely love this technic! That's gorgeous! Yes, I'm going to be using that one allot. Thank you for showing me so many new ways. I need to learn some that are easier because the nerve damage in my hands are slowing me up. I have drawn and painted all my life but certain things are getting in my way and I'm damned and determined to not let it stop me! So thanks for all the ways I'm learning that I can still do from you. Hope you had a great Holiday Season, Blessings! 😃
Thank you for sharing this. Definitely going to be trying it out. I recently found your channel and it kind of brought me back to the reason why I love watercolor and wanting to learn agian. Thanks for being you too. It makes your videos enjoyable. Have a great evening.
Can a hair dryer be used to dry the paper faster or does it wreck the paper? Great tips you have passed on! I love your spirit when you splatter…great fun!
Silly splattering ❤ I love splattering I know what the problem was with my tree and it does look like yours, but I have mine in the stupid center and it really doesn’t make sense. Yours is off to the left and it looks wonderful.
I painted them a few days ago and they turned out great! However, they only turn out very well when I use the paper from Arches, otherwise they don't work so well with the wet in wet technique.
Dear Ellen, just hang around RUclips during Christmas holidays. I found the tutorial very interesting. I just picked up my materials and tried. Lovely, Lovely Christmas painting 🎨. Even I can do it. Thank you so much ❤️
I just found you a couple days ago and I'm obsessed with your techniques and love listening to you walk us through the process. My Christmas cards are looking great, thanks to you, Ellen. I'm so stoked!!! THANK YOU!! So MUCH!
Beautiful cards Ellen! The very first time I stumbled across one of your videos, you may have heard me scream 'OMG, she's from BOSTON!!' (you know, the universal word for anyone from MA....). I grew up in MA and now that I'm on the other side of the country, it felt oddly comforting to hear someone with such a distinct accent - and the dry NE humor..... Thanks for the fun lessons and the accent. ;)
Hi Ellen, I’ve been watching you off & on for a couple years, I love your teaching skill. I plan on joining your patron as soon as k can. I can only do one at a time. Thank you your an awesome artist. Chris

This is how christmas trees looked like when i was a child. Very educational..
So cool....almost. looks like you're looking thru a rainy window. BEST WATERCOLOR TREE. VIDEO. ♡♡♡
I love how slap-happy you are with your paint....that's my style.
Cool effects with the bokeh!!
Love the repetitive "don't be scared!" Us perfectionists in the crowd need the reminder 🙈
I LOVE splattering too!
These aee gorgeous! I can’t wait to try it.

Ellen you make me smile every time I watch you paint
Love the bokeh effect. I bought a little pack of 4 different sized round foam stamps, about 3€ on Amazon, really helpful to take off paint
I never knew we can PAINT bokeh!!! Thank u so much for sharing the technique!!
Your “real ness” really saves my sanity. Happy Holidays. I learn so much.
This was gorgeous. I'm going to try it. Thank you.
Did I mention this was gorgeous?

Appreciate your tutorials very much. You have helped me improve my watercolor techniques. I love the loose component of your style.
You're a wonderful watercolor painter. And I love splatter .
Gonna go try it...and I love your fun personality ❤
