- What a better way of testing the economy of a car than driving to France? I was so impressed that the e-TSI Passat got me 650 miles and still had fuel in the tank. If you was worried about replacing your diesel car, than I hope this puts your mind at rest!

Diesel power is still available in some countries in mainland Europe, either 150PS (FWD) or 193PS (AWD).
Not to petrol bash BUT was your car full of luggage and passengers? Towing ability? Modern diesel’s still do have a place in the market especially for larger cars
3 adult passengers and their luggage for a short trip, so quite full. However you’re correct, towing would have been helpful to add and the torque of diesels will always help in this situation. My point of the video was not to discredit diesel but just that some petrols/hybrids can get close to the economy ☺️
Found your channel a couple of weeks ago, and I've been hoovering up videos! Love the reviews of everyday vehicles for regular people. Too many channels are only interested in reviewing £50k plus EVs and supercars these days. Great job Tish!
Welcome aboard! I always do my best to stick to as affordable as possible… of course that’s easier says than done nowadays 🫣
In my opinion the mid-range Elegance is my favourite Trim 😊
Brilliant video, you are doing a great job. You are the modern version of "i drive a classic"(Steph).
The new Passat was designed by Skoda and is built on the same line as it’s Superb sister car. It’s no wonder that it’s a very nice quality thing - remember, despite what they’d like you to think re badge snobbery, a Skoda is like a Volkswagen, but just that little bit nicer.
I still have a diesel and on a frequent 300 mile trip it gives 67 mpg.
As great as ever Tish.
I give this car the KNEE'S up!❤🤭
It’s nice that there are a few new estates still for sale. I do miss the diesels though, bags of torque and great economy.
Great review Tish, of a proper car, with an engine, not a hideous SUV . Any car with these sort of touchscreens should have an NCAP rating of zero , inherently dangerous to use when driving .
In Germany they launched the new Passat B9 with 3 new diesels. It will still be the company car driver’s choice since on the autobahn petrol and plug-in are much less efficient at high speeds and not as hard wearing as TDIs.
Massage seats on the base spec is incredible! I like that unpronoucable colour too
I’ve always liked the look of the Passat but never bought one. Some good features in there for it to be a good family car. What I really don’t understand is why everything has to be controlled through these daft screens. It’s simply dangerous having to take your eyes off the road to alter basic things like the heating controls. I won’t buy a hybrid or a full electric car unless I have no option at all. I have a 1.5 Tiguan and on a nearly 400 miles round trip from East Yorkshire up to Cumbria it gave bang in 50 mpg so you can get good fuel out of them. It helps that I drive for a living to be fair. Great video Tish!
The passat have been a good car over the years. This new facelift makes ir look like the new Tiguan. Good review Tish.
Love this review, thank you! Genuinely considering this instead of something like a BMW 3/5 for my next car. And VW will always have my heart so it’s a winner for me 😀
Glad it was helpful!
Swapped from 2017 2.0TDi 150PS Skoda Yeti to 2023 1.5TSi 150PS Karoq and the Karoq is proving to be more economical and with petrol being cheaper at the pumps it's even more of a saving.
Watched another review other week. Mega interesting car. Mega comfortable. Great economy. Great ride , not particularly expensive. And UK almost never got this generation at all. Thankfully we did. It’s my kind kind. Unassuming. Be great , bland styling apart.
Good review Trish - I still wish they did a diesel as they have much more torque which makes a real difference when you are fully loaded and towing. I have 2019 Passat AllTrack with 193bhp diesel and 4motion (four wheel drive). It’s a terrific car for long journeys such as going to Europe and the 4motion gives that added security in winter. You didn’t mention the two plug-in hybrids that VW offer which I suspect retained at the corporate market. Europe still gets quite a few petrol options and two diesels (150bhp and 190bhp with four wheel drive). Skoda UK will offer a wider range of petrol and diesels for the equivalent Skoda Superb so why aren’t VW? Very pleased you reviewed the base model with the smaller screen. So pleased you emphasised how much a better option an estate offers over a SUV yet we are in a world obsessed with SUVs - I guess a “superior” higher driving position is what counts to some.
Don’t understand why folk buy silly SUV’s when an estate much more versatile we just need synthetic fuels to be more available at a reasonable price which I’m sure is coming
SUV’s offer an ease of getting in and out due to their increased ride height. Important for those of advanced years and being tall. A more commanding view of the road is beneficial too. However, estate cars certainly have their benefits also.
Super 🎉
That's really good Mpg figures..for mild hybrid family car
Great item thanks 👍
Thanks for watching!
I have the new Passat in Elegance Version and I have the Tablet Holder in the back. So it is spec dependent.
We don’t tow a 1500kg trailer or do over 15k miles. Petrol all the way as it makes sense both on value and comfort. Got the standard 1.5 in a golf estate and it’s averaging 50mpg with a wide variety of roads and luggage, all done at the speed limit not below (or above)
Still wish VW UK would bring in the 2.0 TSI. Seem to be too obsessed with plug in hybrid. All these company car users getting the BiK savings and the cables have never been out of the bag..........
I have a hybrid vehicle company car, I do charge it regularly and use the electric motor where appropriate. I'm getting good mpg from it so it works well for me.
Love the green and you CAN get a black interior in the Passat. Despite the mentioned advantages, I would still get the 18" wheels. Big car needs big wheels. :)
nice to see a car review thats not ev as i cant stand them.this looks great.only thing can this tow ur caravan etc
We had a 2002 Passat Wagon Syncro 2.8 v6. Fantastic car. Love estates/ wagons / variants.
I wish the Passat name were kept in the EV world (plus Polo, Golf, Scirocco, Tiguan, Tuareg etc) as I’m sick of 2,3,4,5,6 etc. across every manufacturer. ID6, EV6 Ioniq6. Boring!
Well.. you could have luck. There will be an electric car from VW carries the name "Golf". But they figure out if it will be just "Golf", or "ID.Golf".
I think they will do it, if they replace Golf and ID.3. But that is just my guess.
The VW Boss said, that he wants to keep well known, iconic car names in the line up 😊
In the states we called these types of car station wagons or just wagons dont see to many of them any more .
Reminds me of the late 60's when Australia went from Imperial to Metric, you guys need to stop using both, one minute you go on about miles, and then combine it with litres please stay in ONE lane. :-) Great tech but vw have a criminal name in Australia,,,
Does the base model come with heated seats?
we all need diesel and we would like to see electrified diesel.
I don’t mean this in any negative way, just intrigued, why do you ‘need’ diesel?
I can answer for him 😅 reliable better mpg it will run forever and will still perform carrying tonnes of kilos while towing
Hi, Tish 💙
A sedan & a lower price for the base model are a must. The lesson of Opel ... brought down by their dream of going up to a higher rank class (by Insignia model) ... should be considered.
Transmission tunnel? Is that AWD?
Would you choose the Tiguan or the Passat?
Is this the same as the Skoda? I don’t like how manufacturers are placing cup holders in the arm rest at the back, not comfortable.
You have the option of an elegant armrest with a movable cup holder.
Diesel is widely used in the Caribbean
I'd like a petrol but one that's at least 2.0, naturally aspirated and with indirect injection. Failing that the only modern car I'd buy is a hybrid Toyota
You'll be needing a Time Machine for that I'm afraid.
Diesel are more economical around town and supered for long range, many large SUV drivers are finding a big drop in economy after switching to petrol from diesel, and not so good when towing, also the department of transport noted a rise in CO2 emissions in the U.K. since the large increase in SUV sales, (remember CO2 the green house gas, seems to be forgotten now) Diesel on average are around 20% less, both emitting NOX gas, yes petrol, but less than petrol, a lot of misleading information about diesel, mainland Europe much more sensible over this, the facts are out their !!!
These sell so badly VW almost dropped it from the UK line up, The Market is SUV's and that shows no sign of changing anytime soon 👍
New Superb is better
Suffolk? I thought you were an Essex girl?? 😟
I’d only buy a petrol over a diesel if it could achieve over 60mpg in the real world otherwise what’s the point,If you can afford solar panels on ya roof with battery storage on a cheap overnight electric tariff then an EV is definitely the way forward.
But Alan; at a price comparison of diesel and petrol…. Surely this petrol running at 55mpg is as cost effective as a diesel running at 60mpg?
@@AutoSocialUK correct comparison wise it’s very close indeed, sadly the £60-£80 fill up hasn’t changed.
Sexy looking car......
Developed entirely by Skoda Auto
Big mistake not coming with a diesel engine as they are great for towing the petrols aren't up to it
Just give measurements instead of liters which is meaningless.
Yup I wish more reviewers did measurements (right now I only know Autogefühl who does it). Liters are only useful if you only carry box-shaped flight luggage around. But trying to find out if some larger/longer items would fit in width or length, its impossible to find that data online without going to dealership and measure it yourself.
Agree 100%, does it mean how litres of milk I can fit in, no one I know what it means.
No, Skoda does best for less money.
Why those tablets on the dashboard? Very ugly and not practical … if they would have just copied the VW Touareg Dashboard and add some buttons.
Inside looks shitty AF! 2 gen back is the last good one!
Such a painful dull design.
SUVs are the dumbest thing ever. Don't have a storage capability as an estate wagon, fuel consumption is much higher and you roll over easily as the chassis is much higher. No thanks!
As said here please give size in measurements not litres, I buy a fridge it says how big it is, not litres, meaningless and stupid.
The look is sooo boring, no imagination, all rounded jelly mould look cars. I buy a car that looks wow, and VW new models look boring ❗️😔
