Yes they are better than suv,s i want a car not a tank, i want great mpg not a life sucker, its great car, and all in one great daily driver and it will not let you down look after it and it will look after you.

I have had an SUV and have just bought a Passat Estate and I much prefer the estate over and SUV. Overall a better car. I think the love of estate cars will come back once SUV's become less fashionable. (Which I think they will)

Cars are falling out of fashion altogether. Just ask any young person today. I predict Electric "pedal cars" like the Podbike and BioHybrid are the future for driving "enjoyment". Everything else will just be self-driving taxis.

I have a Passat and before I had a Tiguan. The Passat is more comfortable and sporty. I also love that you can easily put bicycles in it. In a Tiguan you have to take off the front tire of the bicycle to get it in. I recommend the reverse camera. The Passat is a quite long car …

We got a B7 Passat (1.6TDI with basic specs) at home with nearly 200k km on the clock, Its an absolute joy to drive even for me (28yo) and I'm now looking at purchasing a B8 4motion Passat for myself after having my GTI. Imo I have way more fun in the Passat then I had in my GTI since I could never use the power around my neighbourhood, plus I always feel so relaxed in the Passat. Estates will always look better then a suv.

The middle cup holder in the rear armrest is for narrower cans such as energy drinks.

I am very much looking forward in getting my just ordered Passat R line. It will just take about 35 weeks before delivery day. At 193cm tall, I just don’t realy fit in these cross overs and small SUV’s. I love the design of this current Passat.

It's daft - the previous model had a nice analogue clock in that space.

Nice review, had an SUV and found it akin to driving a transit van, much prefer the Passat. I note the car shown has additional options than those listed including Dynaudio surround sound (with full-size spare) memory-massage seats and IQ lighting.

I like the Volkswagen Passat estate, I far prefer it to an SUV and if and when I change my Skoda Octavia Petrol model I may well get one.

I really don't get SUVs or Chelsea tractors as I call them. Fair enough if you wanna do a bit of green lane driving. But none of them ever get muddy. All they do is go on the school run. I don't want vertical space. I want horizontal space. An estate car is the only car you'll ever need. It can do it all. And personally I think the passat is a beautiful car. I'm planning on getting a GTE as soon as I can afford to do so. I've had nothing but estate cars for the past 15 years now and don't want anything else. They just fit my lifestyle, hobbies and family perfectly. And when you move house it easy to move stuff without the huge expense of hiring vans etc. Really does annoy me that all the electric cars which are coming out are SUVs. Come on for goodness sake bring back the estate!

100% I've always been a fan of sporty wagons or crossovers like the alltrack. SUV's are the least practical imo unless you get a real 4x4 for off-roading.

  • @saddoncarrs6963
    @saddoncarrs6963 2 года назад +3

I don't think a high driving position or perceived safety has anything to do with the popularity of SUVs and crossovers. Just visualise the Nissan Puke for a second.
Ugly is very much in fashion - body piercing, weighing 120kg, ripped jeans, hoodies, tattoos, flat faced dogs, crimson hair highlights, foul language. SUVs are all just part of today's modern crass vibe.
Personally, I'll take an estate car any day (and preferably one without privacy glass).

I bought a B7 after almost 10years of not renting car and its been a joy for the last 6years. i have racked up more than 400k km on the car and not once was i disappointed and really feel awkward letting it go. Passat is a brilliant car. It's a match made in heaven for touring musicians. My car still run very well but i think its time to upgrade.

I currently drive an SUV from Hyundai, just clocked over 330,000kms and I like the ride but it's noisy and as I get older I want peace when I drive. You don't really talk about noise but when I embark on a 1,400km day trip to Dunkirk noise is tiring! And then there's economy the SUV cannot possibly match an estate's aerodynamics and you don't talk much about that either. Mind you with a gentle right foot I manage 6lt/100kms on the highway and 5.5 around the town and country. Anyway I'm thinking of going back to estate shapes but which one?

I have a 67 plate GT model. This has glass roof, plus sunroof and the fancy nav system with digital speedo display. Has all the decent features. I now have to change. Need the r line to get the 190 bhp engine, but I lose the roof and the fancy nav. I can get these extras if I lose the heated steering wheel. My life is over. Everyone else is going for the Volvo XC 40 hybrid but I can’t fit my dogs in. That’s the beauty of the Passat. You don’t wake up on a Saturday and think ooh, I fancy a Passat but it ticks all the boxes for a work horse. The GT has been fabulous. Towing, dogs, comfortable. Fast enough.

Agree I just got into an 18 plate GT, perfect combo of extras and the wheels I think look better than the R. I have 6 speed manual , getting 60 plus to the gallon, came out of an 18'plate 530d saloon, a great car but not over practical, getting used to the performance drop and I got a few grand change...:)

Glad you like this more than raised hatchbacks. But vw/Audi should not be allowed any r-line/s-line in UK cos they're not sporty vehicles so let them ride with refinement and grace.

Thanks for this review. Currently driving a Tiguan but hate the petrol engine - why did VW think this was a good idea? Why did I think it was a good idea? So now considering either a diesel Passat estate or Superb estate when my current car's time is up but undecided at the mo.

99% of the time the SUVs are not used for their pedigree purpose, but instead they are used as day to day drivers mostly around towns or motorways (commuting). Yes, they are comfortable, but then what's the hustle with all these Euro norms, when we are using cars which are inefficient because of their gigantic size? does it make sense?
