      1) Coach Boone was fired for physical and verbal abuse towards his players
      2) The Titans had an extremely large talent pool due to the Merger of three high schools. This is why they were so dominant in 1971.

I'm glad when people grow into adults that they can look back on something and actually understood a message that flew over them. What makes me sad is how long it takes for that message to get through to people sometimes, myself included. People have forgotten how to take criticism, how to identify when someone's angry about something and it's not a personal attack but an observation, or how to simply agree to disagree without condescending or insults. Feels like my generation has lost that the most. Born in 89'. Probably the last generation to be told when growing up "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words may NEVER hurt me." Funny how we stopped teaching that particular saying since 2000.

Thus they feel that them being a hard ass constantly is the best option. But the white coach is right as well. Some players respond better to coming at them with respect and more tolerance. The world maybe dark and cold, but as a teacher, coach, or parent, you need to know how to help a person find some level of peace in order to achieve their goals.

@emmy lite No he isn't. You are misinterpreting his methods and what he is actually saying.
I am a black man myself. What he is pointing out and trying to say is that the world is cruel and unforgiving. For everyone. In Amercia it's especially cruel to Black people. This "nice" white coach was taking the black kids and coddling them. Thus making them dependent on a "Nice" White man to save them. Hence why he said "you're crippling them for life" A major problem in the black community. That a nice white man will take care of them. Boone is trying to get them to understand discipline, criticism and pressure. In order to take it and rise above and perform at the best of their ability. Whether it be football or in society.
Coach Boone is the complete opposite of cruel. He is a Drill Sergeant teaching soldiers how to go to war and being able to execute under extreme pressure.
Black people don't need a nice white man. We need a strong black man to guide us with strength and tough love because that's our reality living in a cruel world.

Even say "period/end of story" Ironically that makes you the Authoritarian because you think your own view is the correct one and dismiss all points to the contrary without room for discussion. Congratulations you played yourself and are the very thing you accuse Coach Boon of.
You have no clue what Authoritarianism is. Take a study into Nazi Germany and Fascist Mussolini. Rather than trying to attack a fellow black man for trying to teach and coach toughness in a football context. Notice how you neglect his more compassionate elements when Congratulationing his players for making it into college when before hand he asked him to bring him his grades to help him be eligible. Which would yield benefits as they grew into society. In no way is he comparable to actual Authoritarians Fascists like Mussolini. I bet you think Jesus is white too 🤣.

I wish this movie was still shown to kids. The ultimate message of it is that brotherhood knows no race. My high school football team watched it every year during two a days and our coaches would always tell us after the movie was over to look around the room. Look around the room and I don't want you to look at a white kid, a black kid, Asian, Mexican or whatever, you look around the room and you realize that you're looking at your family. Then the O-line coach would tell us that we'd forge bonds in the trenches that will last a life time. Damn if he wasn't right. I'm 27 and my best friends are still my brother's from the field. That was such a good message to nail into the heads of a bunch of teenagers and having that bond with the others guys made us not just a better team, but better people.

To be fair, Yoast ended up being right. He knew that the defense needed extra speed and Alan didn't have that, but Petey did. While Boone saw it as overstepping his bounds, Yoast saw it as adjusting his personnel to fit what was needed at the time. Knock him all you want, but he was right in the end.

Nah, he didn't put Petey in the game out of need; he did it because he felt sorry for him. But Boone was right. For him to do this for a black player when Boone was tough on all of the players, black and white, was patronizing. Yoast even realized this himself and that was why he suspended Petey from playing in the championship game for insubordination.

    • @christinadoxstader1787

It served both purposes Jim. Alan couldn't cover his man because the guy was too fast for him. Alan was a good player but that guy was too much for him so Yost needed someone who could cover him and Petey was available so he used him. Now did he feel sorry for him after Boone chewed him out again, obviously he did and you could argue he put him in to rebuild his confidence but he did put him in for a football related reason and not just because he felt sorry for him.

The worst you can ever do is quit. Petey wanted to quit because of how hard Boone was being on him. And then you see towards the end of how Yoast wasn’t the soft nice guy anymore. So Boone really got to him. Teach them how to stand on their own two feet or else stay down forever. And that’s no place you want to be.

Their parents and grandparents destroyed the most vibrant economy in history, created the single-greatest instance of income inequality, eliminated vast swaths of the path to enrichment and achievement, and saddled them with debts no one should ever be forced to endure. They literally have no future, because the previous generations decided it was better to give Bezos, Gates, and Sam Walton's heirs so many tax breaks that they can't begin to spend it all, than it was to fix the infrastructure, provide for security, and encourage growth and prosperity for everyone. Damn right they don't want the "hard truth" you think they deserve. They just want the same breaks their parents and grandparents had, and those were taken away.

A lesson for a segment of the "tolerant" white community. Tolerance is one thing, but it is JUST to hold black and white to the same standards of moral, intellectual and civic behavior. Anything else is injustice. We are not doing well in this area as a culture. The last bastion of racism in this nation will be the quiet bigotry of soft expectations.
Minorities need to be expected to stand on their own merits, to neither be unnecessarily denigrated nor excessively patronized, if the problem of race in this country is ever going to end.

    • @lwmson
      @lwmson 6 лет назад +3

Kindness is one thing. But if you are kind to someone because you think they are inferior to you, then -- as Boone says -- you are patronizing them. It's "soft bigotry" because even though your intentions are good, you're helping that person because you think they are inferior, and feeling that someone from another race is inferior to you is essentially what racism is about.
As shown at the end of this scene, Yoast even realizes this, which is why at the end of the movie during the championship game, he disallows Petey's request to play as punishment for Petey's insubordination during the previous game.

@TMWSITY Who enslaved the blacks? Democrats. Who represented poor whites and "liberal" policies during the 20th century? Democrats. Which president first sent in the National Guard to help young black kids integrate into a school in Arkansas? Eisenhower, a republican (and the last good one). Who schemed to pass civil rights bill just because they wanted to control the black vote once they allowed black people to be able to vote? Lyndon B. Johnson, a Democrat. Lyndon B. Johnson said, and I quote: "I'll have those n-words voting Democrat for the next 200 years." The democrats knew that civil rights were inevitable. They knew the blacks hated the democrats because all the slave owners and their families were democrats. They knew that once civil rights passed, that southern blacks would vote against them. So, they made one of the smartest moves in political history: they passed the civil rights while they had control of the White House so they could keep control over the southern black vote and not lose a tremendous amount of power. Those racist rich white southerners were brilliant. Guess who else was a rich white southerner? Bill Clinton. Are the republican conservatives racist? Sure. But don't be a naive fool and think for a second that the Democrats are not just as much and more.

I always thought this was an interesting sup plot. Star running back that couldn't handle the pressure. Then gets put in at safety and does great until hes under pressure and gives up. I am not totally against what Boone did and said but I think a middle ground could work too. Yoast put him back on the field and he hadn't changed so in the long run that didn't do anything. Either he needed to sit out the year and come back next season or earn his spot is my opinion is a middle ground and learning experience. Just giving him a position on the team we learned wasn't the right choice.

There is a measure of nuance in this scene that doesn’t get much attention in a movie filled with so many inspiring parts. And that is the fact that at times our understanding of race and our response to it should not come from our own points of view about it, but from the understanding of the other. The other is more important, the other is the part that is missing from our view of the situation, this is why there is so much frustration between two sides.

This is a conversation that white folks in 2021 STILL don't understand. My son's kindergarten teacher babied him. Let so much slide. My son is sweet (never disrespectful) but he still failed to show that he was ready to pass kindergarten. She passed him (even though he wasn't ready) and he struggled so much in 1st grade. He cried every day. Homework felt like I was trying to teach him calculus. His dad and I decided to move him back to kindergarten and since that day he has been so much more confident. He's going to 3rd grade now and is one of the top two students in his class in reading and math. -----point of my story is, some white folks see black kids and pity/baby them (as if they need to be saved) instead of preparing them for life with tough love like they do white kids.

This was a powerful scene of the movie, and one that every bleeding heart liberal white person should see. Yoast's intentions were good, but what Boone makes him realize is that by showing special attention to a black player Yoast was indeed being patronizing.
