Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) was one of those games that many kids wanted growing up in the 80's. It had the characters, the action, the look, the sound and even the pizza...or did it? Well let's find out how they screwed this one up.
In this episode the Nerd plays one of his childhood games to re-live the torment that is TMNT for the NES. He tries his best at fighting, jumping and swimming his way to defeat the insidious Shredder. Teased by out of reach pizza, taunted by impossible jumps, enraged by electric seaweed, what could possibly go wrong?
TMNT was released in 1989 on the Nintendo Entertainment System and developed by Konami. The game is centered on platforming action in which the player has to go through a series of Castlevania like levels to complete the game. As per Turtles fashion pizza restores life points and getting hit by enemies decreases it. Getting hit enough times knocks out the Turtle so the player has to select another until all 4 Turtles are dead.
Released under Konami's Ultra Games brand, TMNT was a successful game but lacked overall quality, with glitches and unusual game design. However, due its success the game managed to get a sequel, TMNT 2, but that was a port of the original Arcade game however.

Definitely not the best NES game but far from bad either. I'd say it's one of the better ones. The thing about the AVGN is, it's in the name, right? He is the *angry nerd*. All those game critics and everything should be taken with a grain of salt.

The early AVGN episodes are such gems. While I absolutely appreciate the fact that James is still making AVGN all these years later, the early episodes still have an undeniable charm and the comedy is still so very on point.
That and the older episodes are not poisoned by product placements
Some people are saying that the newest season of AVGN is the best in years.
It’s just like what AVGN said about the Atari 2600. Even though stuff like the 5200 (aka the new episodes) tried to replace the 2600 (the old episodes), they failed and that old dusty 2600 lived on.

It was a little later though (Plumbers don't wear ties was just out) and we ran through an episode daily from the beginning at lunch.
Awesome times.
The older avgn videos have aged really well. You can tell how much fun James has playing as the nerd & the comedy is still on point. Much respect, Mr. Rolfe

Mid-30s here and still playing these games, and my father (who used to play these with me when I was a kid and is now in his 60s) still likes to play them too! So nope, you're never too old :)
I'm 23 and I wasn't even around for the the Atari or NES days, but I love retro games of all types. 2600, Commodore, NES, SNES, Master System, Genesis, N64, Saturn, Dreamcast, PSone, PS2. This was back when gaming actually meant something to me. There was no DLC, expansion packs, or being charged for cheat codes.
I always will watch this no matter how long has passed.

This was my favourite game on the NES, and I still have it to this day. Once you learned you can full-speed walk over the 1-block gaps, as James shows in the sewer level, it became so much easier.

I had a AVGN moment when I broke my controller, throwing it at my tv. It was from that same spot in the ceiling. Jumping for hours, I gave up after several game sittings. Was no internet back then. I was looking up the Japanese TMNT OVA, and came across your video. Now I'm hooked and debating if I should go back and play it. It's crap, yet I own it and haven't beaten it. I sat my nephew down to play Ninja turtles. He's 7 years old and he figured the pizza jump out and that single space jump for the rockets right away. It took me years as a kid to do it and my 7-year-old nephew gets it right away.
It's funny how he didn't know you can walk over it after clearly walking over other small spaces like that earlier in the video while he was in sewer lol
You hear the TMNT theme every time you beat a boss. Sure its just the "Heros in a half shell. Turtle power" part but its there.
There's a speed run of this here on RUclips. It was done to raise money, and the gentleman that did it was really impressive, if maybe a little nerdy. For the sewer jumps, he explained that there are three distinct jumps one can do. He talked about how all of the turtles attacks actually hit enemies behind them(besides Ralph, who is basically a sacrificial lamb). He knew the spawns of the game, and how to generate which enemy spawn set. He knew the percentage odds of reaching the Technodrome depending on which sewer pipe you go down, and he knew of alternative things to do when attempting a world record(which I think he owns). It was fun to see someone fully dissect one of my favorite childhood games.

Fun Fact: Ultra games was just a shell corporation for Konami. What that means is that Konami just made the company up so they could release more games for the system, because back in the 80's, Nintendo only had company release a certain amount of titles a year so they wouldn't just crank out games. That was their way of getting around it.
Yeah Konami published the NES version of Metal Gear in the US as "Ultra Games". The use of a dummy company... sounds like an intrigue espionage plot from a Metal Gear game! -- AT
