Actually, Kojima's Solid Snake is inspired by Snake Plisskin, a character from Escape From New York. In fact, in one of the Metal Gear Solid games, Snake's nickname is "Pliskin".
Fun fact; Konami gave the development team only THREE months to complete the NES version of Metal Gear, while also giving instructions to make it different from MSX2 original.

wouldnt it be "ive located some plastic explosive(s)"? or if it was singular wouldnt it be "ive located plastic explosive" or "ive located plastic explosive (material)"? im not saying im right or ur wrong... just wondering why that would be right. it doesnt seem as bad as the others.
pat442389 The reason it's "some plastic explosive" and not "some plastic explosives" is because the item in question is a single lump of the plastic explosive. so it's one explosive item. for example, C4 is a plastic explosive. and because of this, it's in the form of a dough like material that can be packed together and molded or shaped. so it's a single unit of explosive. like one stick of TNT. And the reason it's refurted to as "some" plastic explosive, is for the same reason as C4 being in the form of lumps of moldable dough. it's just a portion of explosive material packed into a single unit. so what snake had found was a single packed up explosive, made of a C4 like explosive material.
For those who do not know the chronological order goes: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (considered non-canon) Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Metal Gear Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake Metal Gear Solid Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty Metal Gear Solid 4 Still probably one of my favourite game franchise ever! :D
Portable Ops is still considered canon by Kojima, though he does seem very reluctant about it. Possibly due to the fact he didn't have a hand in its creation.
Zelda appears briefly when you get the Ocarina of Time in MM. Link's Awakening would be a better example as she didn't appear at all, but only mentioned by name in the beginning of that game.
The correct timeline would be: Snake eater (1964), Portable ops (1970), Peace walker (1974), Ground zeroes (1975), The Phantom Pain (1984), Metal Gear (1995) Solid snake (1999), Metal Gear solid (2005), Sons of Liberty (2007-2009), Guns of The Patriots (2014), Revengence (2018) The other games such as: Snake's revenge and Metal Gear Acid are spinoffs
10:10 Well, Big Boss always wanted for Snake to die, he even starts giving you wrong directions towards the end of the game and disappears all together, part of the story
He wasn't involved in the Sega CD version of Snatcher, and it was still as amazing as his original work. Maybe after this, he learned from experience not to give his IPs to people who will botch it.
It would be great to do that, considering that the early Metal Gear series just got confirmed for the Switch. But I doubt it will happen, since I don't think James has the same emotional attachment to Metal Gear that he has for Castlevania or Contra.
Well,I guess you never played MGS3, because it's the name of the principal operation of the game ("Operation Snake Eater") where Snake needs to kill his menthor and recover a Mecha Weapon
I personally didn't enjoy the MSX version of this game. It shared a few problems with the NES version (the pits, the gas chamber, the dialogue boxes), but what got me through it was constantly telling myself that this isn't the NES version. Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake on the other hand... OH GOD! Those who have MGS3 Subsistence/HD: PLAYITPLAYITPLAYITPLAYITPLAYITPLAYITPLAYITPLAYITPLAYITPLAYIT!!!!!!!!!!
Ok. A word about passwords. Each digit in a password is to tell the console, what items you have, how many consumables you have ( ammo, healing items,) how many permanent items you have aquired, your game progress ( bosses killed, areas you have cleared, etc). So when you put all that info together in a password, you get a huge set of nunbers and letters. I, for one, was so glad when the Legend of Zelda introduced a battery to save game info and make passwords an unfond memory. 😂
Probably said a hundred times by now, but the rank system is how you start at different positions, not the continue codes. When you put in the code you can see a 2 star rank. The continue used to prove your point show you've still on the 1 star rank. Loved this game as a kid. This review is epic for all the failures in this version.
Today I learned that the song Justin Whang always plays during his videos is that song from Metal Gear, which is played at the beginning of the video here. Hearing James talk over it is so surreal, but now I’m thinking, wouldn’t it be awesome to hear James do a “Tales from the Internet” video?
You actually did needed a password this long, since it recorded your progress, area, your inventory, unlocked items and the amount of ammo/consumables. Back when I was a kid and I didn't knew how to get past the tank, I've ended up cheating and cracking the password. Had a notebook dedicated to it.
pretty cool, yeah at some point I noticed you could change letter or numbers based off existing passwords and it would change. I think i even started typing random stuff and would actually work sometimes. Actually cracking the code is cool af tho
The guy at the beginning said "I'm getting sleepy" at 7:37, so there was clearly a different version where the game was proof read by humans, not monkeys
Still have my copy of this game. I was in the pediatric ward of a hospital when I was 8 because I broke my leg and they had an NES there, including Metal Gear. I took the game when I left lol.
I grew up with this game. I loved it. Everyone has to remember that this was the beginning of good games. It's easy to shit on old games, but those were the shitty games that paved the way
I think the reason why the guy on the cover art looks Kyle Reese from the Terminator is because 70% of Hideo Kojima's body is made of movies. (The original MSX version used this cover art too)

+Mygingerguy Well if your continent would conform to the same electrical standards as the rest of the world you'd have everything. lol life is a total bitch.
The "I've located some plastic explosive." part is actually correct.
wouldnt it be "ive located some plastic explosive(s)"? or if it was singular wouldnt it be "ive located plastic explosive" or "ive located plastic explosive (material)"? im not saying im right or ur wrong... just wondering why that would be right. it doesnt seem as bad as the others.
pat442389 The reason it's "some plastic explosive" and not "some plastic explosives" is because the item in question is a single lump of the plastic explosive. so it's one explosive item.
for example, C4 is a plastic explosive. and because of this, it's in the form of a dough like material that can be packed together and molded or shaped. so it's a single unit of explosive. like one stick of TNT.
And the reason it's refurted to as "some" plastic explosive, is for the same reason as C4 being in the form of lumps of moldable dough. it's just a portion of explosive material packed into a single unit.
so what snake had found was a single packed up explosive, made of a C4 like explosive material.

This is the truck from Big Rigs, that's why Solid can't jump from it - it has a speed of sound!
I have a team of scientists, working day and night, trying to figure out what the fuck you just said.
+Grizzly Adams. hahahaha @ grizz
For those who do not know the chronological order goes:
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (considered non-canon)
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Metal Gear
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty
Metal Gear Solid 4
Still probably one of my favourite game franchise ever! :D
Portable Ops is still considered canon by Kojima, though he does seem very reluctant about it. Possibly due to the fact he didn't have a hand in its creation.
Do you consider Metal Gear Rising canon?
1:32 it's funny because he is the main inspiration for the Snake characters.
I'll love this show forever. Thank you for all the years of hard work. James Rolfe, you lived your dream and then succeeded past it.
"That's like having Legend of Zelda without zelda"
Kinda like... Majora's mask?
He meant the whole franchise....
Your dead in that one it's all about the five stages of grief and you fall down a tree thing and moons falling under ground
***** A GAME Theory!!!
your in a tree underground it could just be a bad dream link's having
Zelda appears briefly when you get the Ocarina of Time in MM. Link's Awakening would be a better example as she didn't appear at all, but only mentioned by name in the beginning of that game.
Here's the timeline: MGS 3, Portable Ops, Peace Walker, 5, MG1, Snake's Revenge, MG2, MGS, MGA, MGA2, MGS2, MGS4, Rising Revengence.
The correct timeline would be:
Snake eater (1964), Portable ops (1970), Peace walker (1974), Ground zeroes (1975), The Phantom Pain (1984), Metal Gear (1995)
Solid snake (1999), Metal Gear solid (2005), Sons of Liberty (2007-2009), Guns of The Patriots (2014), Revengence (2018)
The other games such as: Snake's revenge and Metal Gear Acid are spinoffs
Right, i'm sorry for mistake and thank you for correct.
Kevin Varela
Is Ghost Babel canon?
The wiki says it is not, but the Colonel AI in MGS2 mentions it...
um...i don't konw ;_;
Kevin Varela
I see.
6:35 All-time greatest use of that line. Seen this episode many times, but I never see that coming.
By far, one of my favourite AVGN episodes.

is the guy bellow you a friend? you both have Simpsons characters in white rooms
10:10 Well, Big Boss always wanted for Snake to die, he even starts giving you wrong directions towards the end of the game and disappears all together, part of the story
I have watched this episode at least 3 times now, and "Solid Snake might as well be named Erec..." gives me a full laugh every time.
That's why it was shitty, Kojima wasn't involved in this.
He wasn't involved in the Sega CD version of Snatcher, and it was still as amazing as his original work. Maybe after this, he learned from experience not to give his IPs to people who will botch it.
James should have worn a bandanna in this episode. XD

4:40 The reason why Solid Snake isn't allowed in the dog park anymore
Anyone else notice at 1:16 how he says it's all about getting by undetected while running right past an enemy looking right at him?
I could spend the rest of my life watching AVGN.
I would love to see the AVGN visit the Metal Gear Solid games. Maybe have a marathon very similar to how he did the Castlevania Marathon.
It would be great to do that, considering that the early Metal Gear series just got confirmed for the Switch. But I doubt it will happen, since I don't think James has the same emotional attachment to Metal Gear that he has for Castlevania or Contra.
The best AVGN “fuck” in history happens at 6:49
Metal Gear was one of my fave NES games from back in the day, loved all the different weapons, great classic
Actually, the MSX version is a classic. Pretty much everybody agrees on the fact that the NES version sucks.
That's pretty much what James said in the video.
YEAH lookingBACK THROUGH TIME I'M SURE IT DOES. I never played the game, but I remember it carrying some weight in reviews back then.
Exactly, obviously that the MSX version is the "real" game. Pretty much how I understand and feel about most games that were originally in japan
The MSX version is available as an unlockable bonus on the MGS 3 Subsistence game.
John Laite You don't need to unlock it iirc. It's playable straight away. They're also on the HD Collection and Legacy Edition too
Hey, he used a clip from Startropics a 9:04. I didn't notice that last time I watched this.
My question is why do they call the 3rd game “snake eater” that doesn’t sound suggestive at all....
Well,I guess you never played MGS3, because it's the name of the principal operation of the game ("Operation Snake Eater") where Snake needs to kill his menthor and recover a Mecha Weapon
Because "Operation Snake Eater" involves Naked Snake eliminating The Cobra Unit, hence "snake eater".
Then there is that one achievement in the HD collection...
Because you eat snakes in the game.. 😎
Because Snake Eater is a nickname for a special forces member.
1:00 I love how footage from a bootleg NES game called "Super Contra 7" was used. Never realized that until now.
I for one like both versions. MSX version gets an 8.5 out of 10 from me... the NES... uhhhh... 6.4... still a classic for what it's worth.
Agreed. MG2 is really where the series began to flourish. It's 10x the game MG1 is. I personally think MG2 holds up better today than MGS1 does.
"It's like having a Zelda without Zelda!"

Don't even compare the two. Link's Awakening is a wonderful game :(
MysteriousTomJenkins Is it wrong that I prefer Tetra over Zelda?
Chozo Hunter
Not really.

Nice way to spell cough.
Probably said a hundred times by now, but the rank system is how you start at different positions, not the continue codes. When you put in the code you can see a 2 star rank. The continue used to prove your point show you've still on the 1 star rank. Loved this game as a kid. This review is epic for all the failures in this version.
8:26 totally agree, I once ordered a ps2 multi-tap and I found like 6 mistakes on it
This game played us like A DAMN FIDDLE!!!
+Cinemassacre I bet people remember the PS1 version, because of the game over screen
Today I learned that the song Justin Whang always plays during his videos is that song from Metal Gear, which is played at the beginning of the video here. Hearing James talk over it is so surreal, but now I’m thinking, wouldn’t it be awesome to hear James do a “Tales from the Internet” video?

@@MarakamiSG That's a joke.
Right?
You actually did needed a password this long, since it recorded your progress, area, your inventory, unlocked items and the amount of ammo/consumables. Back when I was a kid and I didn't knew how to get past the tank, I've ended up cheating and cracking the password. Had a notebook dedicated to it.
pretty cool, yeah at some point I noticed you could change letter or numbers based off existing passwords and it would change. I think i even started typing random stuff and would actually work sometimes. Actually cracking the code is cool af tho
This game was the most important of my childhood..... When we sat around recess talking about the "machine gun kid"...we were in the club....
0:00 is a siren which was also used in a couple of “MTN Gang” episodes as NYPD cop cars.
I took the game when I left lol.
seanofthedead90 Thief. Thief. THHHHHHIIIIIIEEEEEFFFFF
A good steal tbh
Ppl think you steal it but they didn't realize, you're making a world a better place.
Still have the hospitals* copy of this game.
Police is called.
(The original MSX version used this cover art too)
And Big Boss decides what the remaining 30% is
