- The Nerd finds himself in action hell, as he looks at three bad games for the NES and SMS, based on the Rambo film series. This is Angry Video Game Nerd Episode 41.
The Rambo films were some of the most popular action movies of the 80's. The character John Rambo was first introduced in David Morell's novel "First Blood" and made more famous by the movie adaptation of the same name starring Sylvester Stallone. It went on to produce three sequels, an animated series, comic books and of course video games. The first Rambo game was released in 1988 on the NES. Simply titled "Rambo," it was based on the events in Rambo: First Blood Part ll, but instead of being the fun shoot 'em up action game it could have been, it was nothing but a confusing Zelda ll rip-off. With stiff controls, a lengthy password system, and a tough to navigate map, the game was a complete disaster.
The Nerd not only sits down to review this game, but also Rambo: First Blood Part 2 and Rambo 3 on the Sega Master System. He also addresses the inconsistencies of the films titles once and for all.

12 Years late but: As someone that's designed old games, I can tell you the long password systems like that are "necessary" because not only does the password bring you to the level you left off at, it should give you all the weapons you had, and for really precise passwords (loooong) you should have the correct ammo amount, health amount, etc. that you left off at. And actually knowing what position and part of the code is what you can actually make it so you have more guns, ammo, health etc than you left off with.

Watching old AVGN is like snuggling up in a warm blanket. Never thought a guy yelling and swearing at video games would be one of the best things for me to fall asleep to, but here we are. Nostalgia is a powerful thing

@@josephwalker1853 it's not for security, it's because the password is almost like a save file. Every digit is a specific stat or something, that's how it's able to save your exact stats.

the original version shown on GameTrailers actually had him talking over footage of Rambo 2. It was cut like Rambo was saying no to the mission. It was great. I think that cut is so much funnier than just a close up of Trautman in the video game.

I remember there being scenes from the movies in this episode. The part with "John, the movie can't continue until you say yes" had a clip.
And the light gun portion intercut with Rambo firing machine guns.
And a lot of Rambo shooting scenes right before the throwing grenades at the spider bit. Thought that was the funniest part, but unfortunately that version got replaced with this edited version, presumably initially because of the DVD release not allowing the use of movie shots, and then later RUclips not allowing film scenes in videos. At least you can still find the original edit online if you look hard enough.

The password has to encode your inventory, what you've done, your stats and whatever else. The password for zelda, if it had one, would probably be over 100 characters.
I just suggest for anyone who thinks the rambo passwords are long to go look ag the Golden Sun passwords.
@@erikasakura7721 River City Ransom..... not that you need it there really, but that one takes the cake. I think it's the longest password I've ever seen in any game ever.
My experience with this game consisted of a sitcom-like inability to talk to the right people at the right time on base, getting lost in the jungle for about an hour, learning to kill varmints and dodge swamp bubbles like a pro, and then getting jump-kicked to death by the first Communist I encountered. What a mysterious jogo.

The music is fantastic and the game itself is at least interesting. Where it falters or fails it does so because of developer inexperience rather than apathy.

Just looked up the kanji that appears when you shoot Murdock and it's "anger"..
Rambo is actually shooting a Japanese kanji character (怒, "Ikari"), thus turning Murdock into a frog.

Super Paper Mario has an option exactly like that at the beginning of the game when you're asked to save all existence from being swallowed by The Void by using the Plot Macguffin of the Day: the Pure Hearts. You can literally get a Game Over at the very beginning of the game, right before actual gameplay starts, just by saying "Fuck the world! Let it die! I'm sick of being the Yes-man!" If y'all watch Chuggaconroy, you KNOW what I mean... Aaaand just for good measure, "BOWSER'S ARMS!!" XD

The password has to be long to store the lives, level, and ammo for each weapon. That entire password screen only represents a maximum of 24 bytes of information.

Not necessarely. It all depends on how much you can compress game ROM content. A lot of games stored all kinds of paramenters and they usually had 4 max 5 characters of password.

Yeah, I mean, the only reason that passwords have had to exist after Zelda was due to deadlines or budget issues.
It's why Zombies Ate My Neighbors had them, because they didn't have time to implement a better save system.
Longest pasword I remember is from "Swords and serpents" You had to enter the game code, how far you've progressed
Then Enter 4x another pass, for each char . So thats 5 in total.
The longest one I ever encountered was in Hydlide. It was just so tedious and time-consuming.
There was a Scooby-Doo game on Genesis with a 50 digit password.

I just had too. Because my writting failed on some codes ( was unreadable). So, back then I did a double code and it worked. Later I did it 4 x to test it.. and i was like OMG>> I RULE haha.

Technically, the immediate title of the *GAMES BASED ON* the 2nd movie is: ”Rambo”. The title of the games bears no relevance on the title of the movie, because they weren’t made by the same people, and the people, who made the games, as far as I’m aware, have no authority to create canon regarding the movies. It’s like if I made a game called: ”Super Mario: Bros.” (downgrading the ”Bros.” into a subtitle, as indicated by the colon), does that mean that the immediate title of the original ”Super Mario Bros.” is: ”Super Mario”? *NO!* 🤯
My favorite part of 2020 so far is that I am reminded that I didn't hit the Like button on some of the old AVGN videos, so now I go back, watch them all, and finally click Like.

My dad loved the Rambo III on the Master System, it was one of the few games he finished. Playing with the light gun was so damn fun! I personaly liked a lot to play the "Wanted" game.

On Super Paper Mario, you have the option to say "no" at the beginning as well, and if you say "no" you get Game Over. :P
