I have the brigandine when it was the fuse iteration with Gore-Tex (2018 season) and it was probably the best brigandine model they've ever created. it's part of their steep series collection so it's geared towards snow sports. I've used it for many seasons and it's survived a lot of snowboarding trips it's so durable. unfortunately, my futurelight stuff hasn't held up as expected I had to warranty 3 jackets using that membrane over 2 years. meanwhile my apex flex softshell with Gore-Tex membranes has been going strong. I think it was a mistake to go with in-house membranes as longevity issues have been a common theme according to the warranty department. similarly, the new denali jackets aren't Polartec recycled water bottle fleece anymore. they now use their own fleece and it clumps pretty bad after 3 months of use. if you've got the gore/polartec versions of their jackets, they were built to last so take care of them and they'll give you many years of protection.
Nice review! Got the apex flexFL and i totally agree! It´s an amazing jacket. Went from a goretex shell to this, and it outperforms in every way in terms of breathability and the tactile feel to the garment which also has a nice stretch to it. It's the frist waterproof jacket I´ve owned in which i can actually be active without getting drenched from the inside. Furthermore it´s super durable. I use it as my daily go to jacket, often instead of my softshell even if it´s not raining. The only "drawback" of this jacket is actually down to its air permeabillity. It´s not the best in terms of shielding in cold windy conditions. It will let in a substantially amount of air compared to a goretex shell. Oh and one other thing is fit. It has a little bit of a weird cut to it. Tight around shoulders but too wide around the torso which make it a tiny bit bulky. I definitely wouldn´t call it athletic or slim fit. more like regular. But again thats probably the best fit for the majority of the american population🤷😉
Thanks man, I got the apex flex as a winter jacket that can breath for me. I’m a big guy and walking through the Colorado winter was always a hassle. I would be to embarrassed to even take off my jacket how my pit stains I would get. This material is amazing. I’m comparing it to the Gotham 3, that jack had goose feathers flying out of it and the smell drove me insane. This jacket keeps me warm in 18 degree weather and dry from sweat. I didn’t have the hot sweats walking in this jacket and it kept the ice cold wind away from my body.
Ordered the thermoball triclimate and the apex flex before watching this! Was so happy about the apex flex to see it number one but scared to here it’s a slim fitting? Size up would you say then?
I think you are right also. This bums me out. I found that there was a second version of the material that came out that was not as good as the first. I don’t know what happened but it didn’t improve and then just seemed to disappear. I still use mine often.
I have the Brigadine Jacket and Pants. I bought them May 10th so I haven’t had a chance to test them in the cold however I have worn them in a tornado, monsoon and a few thunderstorms. On those days I was thankful to have them.
i have the goretex version of the apex flex and love it. it's still in great condition. do you think it's a substantial enough of a difference for me to upgrade to the future light version?
I can’t honestly say between the two because I’ve never used that one but if you are looking for more breathability, this has been the best I’ve ever used.

Any word on the north face box canyon jacket? How are the waterproof and breathability capabilities of this jacket?
Interesting and informative but I was curious when you did the warmth test on both you took the CG off to do it but kept the NF one one hmmmm!!!!!

yeah, depending on your body type you might have to size up. i usually wear a small in tnf but i got a medium for this jacket.
