    There’s so much pressure in my family to bleach 😓 everyone does it even the naturally fair ones. It’s celebrated when u do it better than the next person. When u don’t do it you’re “unkempt” I’ve been so brainwashed I’m still learning to love my skin I do get tempted frm time to time but it’s hard when ur own family bashes u like that

    So sad to see how people of color despise their own skin tone. The stress of caring for naturally lighter skin is nothing to envy. Another issue linked to skin bleaching is that Nigeria likes to copy the western media! 20+ years ago in the U.S media changed as light skinned women were the love interests in black music videos 99% of the time by dark skinned artists and lighter skinned people were often casted for positive roles in the media while dark skinned people often got the not so good roles. Nigeria copied. I grew up in U.S and witnessed how Nigeria changed over the years as the west did. U.S says the word Nigga in their music industry (even tho the word is linked to slavery), let's copy. Many Black American guys sag their pants, let's follow. Many black women in the U.S like to have weaves and wigs on in public, let's follow. Many also like to always have on fake nails all the time even if they cant afford doing it constantly, let's follow. List goes on. If the west gave dark skinned black women media validation as they always do to lighter women, Watch many dark skinned people stop bleaching. And better yet, Afrikan countries need to stop importing this crap to begin with.

    • @aliciam7677
      @aliciam7677 2 года назад

      You make good points about the western media. However, as a Black American living in the U.S., the western media is white media. White media is not controlled by us. Within our U.S, black Americas have carved out our owned media channels to own and control our image. Until black people in America, Africa, and other countries start controlling our media and images then we will continue to bleach and use colorsim. I do see a shift in the next generation of embracing our blackness in all aspects.

    • @niyoleo
      @niyoleo 2 года назад +3

      I know U.S is not only the west. I said U.S media in my first comment not just western media. I say western media cuz U.K is in it too a lil bit. But Big Brother Naija, Nigerian Idol, Nigeria's Next Supermodel, list goes on. You can tell that all those shows were copied from the U.S.
      The U.S is seen as the powerhouse country of the whole world. Black Americans are the wealthiest ethnic group of blacks in the whole world (in an individual standpoint) with over a trillion dollar spending power combined. It is psychological, if i do like they do and copy their ways, maybe one day i will be as wealthy and achieve their level of success.
      There's a lot of Afrikan people that practice speaking the american accent to the point where one will think they were raised there. They do that as they watch U.S movies/media for there are many Afrikan homes with satellite cable TV watching U.S media. It is no coincidence as U.S media or trends change so does many countries in the world. I don heard all the U.S slangs in the mouths of people living in Afrika.

      The rate of black people bleaching in the United States is not nearly as comparable as Nigeria. There is clearly far more at play culturally in Nigeria than in the u.s. Colorism simply is worst and got much more worst in the nation.

      @@unapologeticpatriot6504 I never said or alluded to any rate of black folks in the U.S bleaching. I said light skinned black women have always been put on a pedestal of beauty in black media which led to the massive usage of skin bleaching of blacks in Afrika.
      WYT supremacy is the reason for colorism world wide even already pale Asians still bleach bcuz of it. The crazy belief that the lighter the better is what is plaguing colonized areas.

    This is so interesting to me. I married a Nigerian (Yoruba) man and as an African American its not that I dont know what skin bleaching is, but its just not something I associated as normal until I married into his culture. I was asked if I bleach before we had our daughter (I'm a lighter brown African American) and I'd never been asked that from any American (black or otherwise). After my daughter was born she got a middle complexion between me and my husband. SO MANY people have commented about my daughters complexion! Some have even told me "pray she stays this color". I have far better prayers for her btw haha
    I decided to look things up since it intrigued me how focused on skintone many Nigerians ive met have shown themselves to be, and I found your videos. Ive watched both parts and this is just very interesting! Thanks for putting this all together!

      Sadly it wasn’t always that way. It was just within the last 20 years that the obsession with skin tone started in Nigeria. As a Nigerian who happened to be light skinned with very brown hair. Growing up in the south eastern Nigeria, I was actually teased heavily by other kids for being very light skin combined with my brown hair that can sometimes look ginger coloured. It made me grow up wanting to be dark skinned. Fast forward to early 2000s I started noticing people’s fascination with now wanting to be fair skinned. Suddenly the same people who once teased me now walk up to me asking about what product I use which disappoints them when they find out it’s just an ordinary moisturizing lotion. They even ask what colours I combined to colour my hair. It’s just so disappointing. Why can’t people be proud of their natural skin. The media too isn’t very helpful with their constant portrayal of light skin as some beauty standard.

    One thing which is obvious whenever this topic is explored is, that it is almost represented as a female issue. This may be because women in general are more willing to address societal problems of all levels than men and it all boils down to hyper-sexualisation. However, skin bleaching & colorism need to be explored from the male perspective as well. I have read a great study which analyses how the US film industry reserves the role for the brute, the villain, the misogynistic & emotionally detached man to the darker skinned character while the lighter skinned character is portrayed as the sensitive, smart & friendly but also as the less masculine character - how does this affect Black male children & teenagers? How does this effect our perception of Black men in general? All of this messes up how we relate our daily interactions as we as well throw classicism, ethnocentrism, religion & nationalism into our prejudice package.

I think it should be about we should all feel beautiful in our own bodies the way God has made us and except whatever color we are. We shouldn't even put it in a category for light or dark skin is prettier it should be about the beauty on the inside of a person and people focus too much on the outside. I've seen some people I thought were beautiful and then I get to know their personality and it makes them ugly. Dark skin was always prettier to me was my mindset until I realized society was chasing the opposite. Growing up as a Nigerian in America…everyone was light skin so it was like grass. You hardly notice grass until someone calls attention to it or it’s made to stand out or newly manicured. I didn’t think of light skin as “better” AT ALL. I looked more at features, and even then I had a gravitation to Black features.

    We need to research where Black men get the notion that light skinned is more appealing? Is it because it's more rare; the same way Caucasians praise blue eyes and blonde hair , because it's more uncommon.
    Most Black women find European men unappealing and a lot of Black men don't find European women attractive. Lol
    I think European and Black people fetishize " mixed/biracial- ness" , and that's likely the desired aesthetic.
    I don't think people that bleach want to "look White" , but unfortunately many want to look less African/Black, if that makes sense. 🤔

    People, both males and females who bleach their skin need to stop, it shows low self esteem because they have darker skin tones. The Oyinbo man wants the tanned skin and stay in the sun and you want to damage your skin and risk your health because some of these creams have mercury. I know that as one gets older, the face begins to develop dark spots and there are creams with retinol that help. Just enjoy the fabulous skin tone that’s your gift from God, it really looks ridiculous when your face is lighter than your neck and your hands and fir those who bleach their entire skin, it’s not healthy.

Cuz if it is merely for protective style why the need for it to look eurocentric? Why the need for it to be blonde(ginger) you were not born blonde. Wigs are one of the many method of protective styles not the only method of protective style.. You can. Twist your hair if you want protection you don't necessarily need to look eurocentric to protect your hair from elements that can damage it..
