Maith an fear! Irish and Scottish are similar, but even fluent speakers struggle understanding each other without exposure (except for the ulster dialect) ... I can understand about 70 percent of Scottish Gaelic when spoken and I really have to listen. Your learning must be going very well.

Why don't you write new songs ......and not just cover?? If you really want Gaelic revival, you'll need GAELIC HOME GROWN POP SONGS. That will inspire and that will grow irish and the pop industry
@@mairenichonaire1518 yes but mate , they won't get anywhere if they don't use their initiative innit ! People have these average songs a million times in English. If they create new songs, a new tune and beat .....they'll be rolling in money in no time. Every student will be counting thousands of the kings portraits ( £££pounds) In weeks ! Even if you're an average singer, with a good tune and new beat , you can transform yourself. The music of the 60s and 70s was pretty beautiful tbh . I'm only 27 and I recognize that that was the period of music ... If they make a song by themselves, even if it's average mate , it will be a far greater success than what they've copied so far.
The reason that they cover existing English language songs is that as an exercise to improve their Irish the children are encouraged to translate the songs into Irish because. They already know the songs, they're familiar with them and so they can enjoy the act of translating them and realising that you can't translate things directly and sometimes you must adapt them. It's good language practice. During their time in the Gaelteacht they aren't meant to be speaking in English, but so much of their media and entertainment is normally in English. Writing a whole new song very difficult, which should come as a surprise to no one. Translating the songs is fun and then once you've translated them you can enjoy performing and recording them, and it can make for a good memory of their time there. Or I guess if they are unlucky terrible memories of stage fright.
