I do realize the mandatory 43mm intake restrictor didn't flow enough air to make the inline-6 worth the weight, when the minimum weight for the series was about 2/3 the weight of the Supras for sale to the public. That successful 4-cylinder Supra also had the firewall cut up to move the engine back. The driver sat several inches back from the original seat position. The transmission tunnel was a big, square box. The suspension geometry has been completely replaced. I think that race car retained less than half of the original Supra structure and none of the driveline, so it doesn't seem like a very good comparison.

You might improve the 4 cylinder a bit by using higher octane gas -- if Toyota's small GDI turbo is like the ones on my Fords. I've actually datalogged a phenomena where the engine pulls timing over about 4500 rpm on regular gas to prevent detonation. It makes a difference in feeling that pull up to the redline. This applies even to regular vehicles like the Ford Escape with the 2.0L turbo. But again, not sure how Toyota does engine management. Great video and great cars, thanks.
I like the yellow on the car, It would be interesting to see the price difference on the 6 vs the 4, if the 4 is cheap enough I can see it being a good option otherwise I’m not sure. Anyways I’m probably too poor for either version so I’m going to be looking at a Miata lol
@CrazyLegsMcGee That's a battle that has been long lost at this point. "Hey is that a Supra Celica/Celica Supra?" has been going on since they both split. Honestly though depending on the gen, you get more "Nice FC" or god forbid "Sweet 240sx brah" and "Is that a prototype/concept car?"
The entire car should be a Toyota instead of just the emblems. And why should it be so expensive. Toyota is huge worldwide it's just they're greedier than ever before.
Fairly similar results to the M2 vs BMW 230i X-Drive you had done in the past. M2: 1:03.69 Supra 3.0: 1:03.43 230i X-Drive: 1:05.75 Supra 2.0: 1:05.45 Surprised the 2.0 Supra wasn’t much quicker than the 230i Xdrive considering the BMWs soft Xdrive suspension and about 400lbs heavier.

@@amduser86 No, America is getting a different engine, I believe. Europe and the rest of the world will choose between 2 other 4 cylinder engines each with about 200 or 225 hp.
These day, a Supra making 194hp/255hp simply doesn't live up to the name. It's honestly embarrassing how Toyota have diluted the Supra legacy. Yes, a 4 pot is more eco-friendly but no one is buying a Supra to save the planet!
The 4 banger was made as a way to get a cheap mk5/a way of basing off the jgtc mk4 with the 3sgte 4 cylinder. And if people are stupid enough to buy 4 pot maros and stangs they'll do the same with the mk5.
Quit whining; I’m glad they’re giving us options. For people who might not be tracking their car much, the 2.0 makes perfect sense, and you’re saving $10k in the process
@@macbookpro57 But the low power versions aren't real Supras. They're for posers just like 4 and 6 pot Mustangs. It's like buying a standard BMW 3 series 'M' package, and trying to make out it's a sports car when it's not.
Duncan if that bmw 2.0l wasn’t a good engine, it’d agree, but that’s one of the better 2.0l 4 cylinders out there. I rented a new 3 series not too long ago with that engine, and those things are pretty quick, plus they’ve got a pretty nice exhaust note for a 4 banger. Just because a car doesn’t have 5 million horsepower, doesn’t mean it’s not a sports car. It still has great handling dynamics, and a 5 second 0-60 isn’t exactly slow...
@@Duncan94 wait...huh?lower power models aren't supras? So the 2jzge mk4 isn't a supra because it has less power than the 2jzgte mk4? Or the 7m and 1g powered mk3s aren't supras yet the 1jzgte mk3 is a supra just cause it has more power than the 7m and 1g powered supras? What kind of logic is this exactly? So your telling me a car like the mustangs with 4 and 6 cylinders aren't mustangs yet past gen models had 4 pots or V6s back then that were specifically called mustangs by ford themselves.
What’s with the leaderboard out of interest? Different conditions? I’ve driven both the 2016M2 and it’s not quicker than the 2019 M2 Comp on the road or track?? and the FK8 is slower than a Focus RS on track?? Again driven both ..... not a chance. Is there a reason for this? Sorry as i haven’t watch every lap but seem a bit all over the place.
The only thing with the 4cyl is itll likely still be a 40k car even with no options. I dont know many people who steal going to spend 40k on a 4cyl, 2 seater Toyota. They're already having a hard time selling the 6cyl 2020s.
I would take either of these Supra models. For a daily street car that I need to get to "freeway" speeds the inline 4 will be great. For real fun on back roads and a track of course the inline 6 will be the one to get. (:
They were probably thinking everyone in the company who helped with the last Supra has retired, and they didn't want to spend a lot of money re-learning how to build Supras.
@biff s I was trying to say it politely but, yeah, that's what I'm saying. Toyotas other sporty car comes out of a Subaru factory. The "fast" Toyota that comes out of a Toyota factory is an automatic Camry. They seem to think a big (fake) grill makes it less of a soulless appliance.
Everyone shows a picture of the chiselled Supra for the "old days", but the 1st gen came out in '79 and was a soft, rounded shape. It was still a 6-cylinder though.
The 4 cyl is enough for street street driving and weekend Vermont foliage drives and staying alive to enjoy your car purchase or lease for years to come 🤣 I wouldn't be discouraged from getting a 4 because the 6 is in deed better in many aspects. What are the chances or how often will anyone be driving it and pushing its limits in the streets like in that track? Think about it!!! If you get a 4, you'll save money and still have an amazing car. As added bonus > you are driving a Supra which is now Iconic. I hear people saying swap this, swap that into it, it's a celica, it's a bmw, it's wimpy. You know what!!It's enough car. Just get it in Yellow or Red for sure!!
The 4 cylinder not getting a active LSD is ridiculous. Then there is the fact that Toyota still hasn't fixed the wind.buffering issue on either car and still don't offer a manual transmission option. Pass on both forms of Supra
The wind buffering is a weird one. I mean there's an easy aftermarket fix for it... 🤔 So I don't get why they wouldn't add it to the 2021 models as a factory fix.
One thing a lot of reviewers didn’t mention is that the four-cylinder transmission is mapped differently for whatever reason. According to one reviewer. He didn’t say anything about the six cylinder transmission if he was having the same problem down shifting. Anyone have any feedback on that?
Wait till people start tuning them 4 bangers it's a reason they made a 4 bangers people gonna be making crazy power with that car for cheaper !!! Remember this i called it first
I guess the biggest question is what's the price difference. If it's only 3 to 4k than it makes no sense, but if it's 7 to 8k then intake exhaust and tune would fix that dead upper range and probably grab 60+ hp and tq for 3 to 4 k. I saw that they included. Maintenance for the first 24 months/25000 miles. That's awesome for customers because if you are going to have BMW gremlins, they will poke their head up early. I thought it would have been cool if they went with a turbo fa20 from subi. You'd have built in upgrades, a totally different engine not, and a car that don't want to settle for gt86 or brz power restrictions.
I need more Hot or Not! Hopefully Toyota puts a manual on it, which would make the narrow powerband more usable. A potential manual transmission would also make that 4 banger even lighter...
Complaining about the weight of the driver was serious argument in my days of drag racing dirt bikes. Though I was of average weight and always ran a big bore 2 stroke so I didn't have to use them myself.
They should have given the 4 cyl a manual. Maybe save 200 lbs on the engine and 100-200 on the manual. Get rid of any extras that add weight like powered seats and magnetic shocks etc. The cheaper brakes were kind of a bummer though.
BMW: "Guys, we're losing money. Some old mechanic on RUclips literally calls our cars 'endless money pits.' What do we do?" Also BMW: "Rebadge the Z4 as a Toyota Celica. That same mechanic raves about Toyotas!" That's a huge scam if you ask me. Hiding a rolling pile of junk BMW underneath a Toyota badge.
Toyota didn't hide that there was BMW parts in the car. Other than the fact that it's doing better than any of their rwd platforms have other than the 86.
@@carboydorifutoparty3976 they can't now. Toyota had to explain to some customers why they were getting recall notices from BMW. The 86 is built by Subaru.

If the 2L is 10 or 15K less... cheaper, for me is an easy choice, 2L wins. That specially if you just want a very nice car, and drive it respecting the road rules of the traffic department of your location. If you are one of those that visits race tracks, go with the 6L. I hope the price gap be reasonable, 10K or more... it will make sense if that is the gap in price.
The A70 and A80 Supra's had turbo and non turbo models. Even the A60 had an "L Type" model without fender flares ans with skinnier tires. So the 4 cyl is like normally aspirated model of the past.

Nope ! According to some informations close to the sources of Toyota, the gt86 which will become the GR86, will get the 2,4L Flat4 turbo from subaru. The lowest power of this engine is 255hp, maybe a bit more on the new GR86. So no need this bmw 4 cyl in the 86 !

@@GT-RTData9 since when is posting an opinion crying LOL
If the aftermarket gets big it could probably be a better track monster than the 6. Better handling with the two less cylinders.
(wonder if adding strut braces to the 4-cylinder would be an easy "plug and play" upgrade and/or make a noticeable difference in handling.)
Should have called the 4cyl the Celica
@CrazyLegsMcGee That's a battle that has been long lost at this point. "Hey is that a Supra Celica/Celica Supra?" has been going on since they both split. Honestly though depending on the gen, you get more "Nice FC" or god forbid "Sweet 240sx brah" and "Is that a prototype/concept car?"
If it was FWD yeah, but it ain't
@@thegamingconqueror7955 All the good Celica were RWD up until the early 80s. first gen supra was a Celica Supra and was a wide body 6cyl Celica.
I'll take the 2.0. It's cheaper, more gas efficient and it's as fast as the Supra IV. The 3.0 is a track car. 2.0 is the better daily driving car.
Roman you should do the phone exhaust test on every car review!! 😂
That would have been funny as hell if the 4 banger put out 276hp......LMAO
If these Supras had legit OEM Toyota engines sales would be much better.
eh, I'm fine with BMW's 6. Watch what happens when the new Z comes out, it will have similar power outputs but the Supra will have way better MPG's.
I agree a Toyota twin turbo engine would have been much better and would have reminded everyone of the two Jay Z days 🤙🏾
@@jeffk464 Anyone fine with BMW engines and the current Supra has already probably bought one
Would be alot more expensive too
The entire car should be a Toyota instead of just the emblems. And why should it be so expensive. Toyota is huge worldwide it's just they're greedier than ever before.
Fairly similar results to the M2 vs BMW 230i X-Drive you had done in the past.
M2: 1:03.69
Supra 3.0: 1:03.43
230i X-Drive: 1:05.75
Supra 2.0: 1:05.45
Surprised the 2.0 Supra wasn’t much quicker than the 230i Xdrive considering the BMWs soft Xdrive suspension and about 400lbs heavier.
Why not buy an 86 instead of the Supra 4-cyl? (the Euro-spec version)
Enrique Gonzalez supra is faster and nicer
@@CuongNguyen-kz4lv I'm talking about the European version with the 194 hp motor. You're paying extra for the styling and perhaps some other options not available on the 86. Plus, the Supra doesn't offer a manual.
Depends if you want a suburu or a BMW lol
The eu spec version has at least 190KW (258hp). What version are you talking about, because it is definitly not the edm version.
@@amduser86 No, America is getting a different engine, I believe. Europe and the rest of the world will choose between 2 other 4 cylinder engines each with about 200 or 225 hp.
Am I the only one that thought the thumbnail was from a GTA 5 video? 😂😂😂😂
Because it’s a BMW
Roman is wasn't that bad cause you arrived at the finish line on the same day of the Drag Race.😂 Great video and thanks for sharing.
I would take either of these Supra models. For a daily street car that I need to get to "freeway" speeds the inline 4 will be great. For real fun on back roads and a track of course the inline 6 will be the one to get. (:
What is the lap time for the Model 3 Performance???
Nice Z5 but it's not a Supra! What was Toyota thinking?!!!
Save your time - 9:00
Thank you
Thanks, skipping their bull is good.

It still has a LSD, it's just not torque vectoring like the 6 cylinder
@@exquisiteart6478 that's what I meant
@@swanblake oh whoops, my bad. Didn't see that you put "Active" LSD
Looks like the 2 is still faster than lots of other cars on the list
Older cars.or much bigger cars as in SUV or sedans.
I have to say the look of the Supra is growing on me. There is something about the look of the white 6 cylinder one that is just right.
I feel like a 4 cylinder Supra paired with a manual transmission would be awesome.
I don’t
Wait till people start tuning them 4 bangers it's a reason they made a 4 bangers people gonna be making crazy power with that car for cheaper !!! Remember this i called it first
Liked this video for the Italian Job shirt. Go Mini's!
I think Toyota underestimated how many Toyota fans really hate BMW. This car will never be as successful as it should be.
The 4 cylinder chassis’s are gonna be good for LS swapping
Might as well just by a Corvette then.
Or 2jz swapping
@@fzj8022 it's made to fit a 2j in that it actually sits comfortably in the mk5 like it was made to have it.

14:01 2.0 Supra is within 35 microseconds of the hellcat lol
Just means the Hellcat's slow. Both are slower than a Civic Type R. And it's not 35 microseconds, it's 350 milliseconds. Or about a third of a second.
3 times the weight, 3 times the power, just shows you how suspension and handling can help in a tight track just as much as tires and suspension.
@@smudgeone You stutter when you comment.....
Hellcat will smoke that shit
It's also only about 35 microseconds faster than a grand Cherokee track hawk SUV too.
Does bmw make both the 6cylinder and the 4 cylinder for this car or just the 6cylinder
I need more Hot or Not! Hopefully Toyota puts a manual on it, which would make the narrow powerband more usable. A potential manual transmission would also make that 4 banger even lighter...
Complaining about the weight of the driver was serious argument in my days of drag racing dirt bikes. Though I was of average weight and always ran a big bore 2 stroke so I didn't have to use them myself.
i can't wait for the manual conversions to begin on the four cylinder models
Curious to see if upcoming 2nd Turbo GR86 will impact sales with the 4-Cylinder Supra
Love the shots of plastic engine covers, cus you know nothing says here's my motor by looking at plastic.
They should have given the 4 cyl a manual. Maybe save 200 lbs on the engine and 100-200 on the manual. Get rid of any extras that add weight like powered seats and magnetic shocks etc. The cheaper brakes were kind of a bummer though.
Jeff K The brakes do seem like a let down for a relatively high performance car, just to shave a little money off.
BMW: "Guys, we're losing money. Some old mechanic on RUclips literally calls our cars 'endless money pits.' What do we do?"
Also BMW: "Rebadge the Z4 as a Toyota Celica. That same mechanic raves about Toyotas!"
That's a huge scam if you ask me.
@@kyletrummel69 ok and? It was 7 cars in its first year. It's a new car if any multiple cars even if its a Toyota is going to get recalled regardless of who makes it.
@@carboydorifutoparty3976 the bottom line is: Toyota builds a better car than BMW, and many people know that. My opinion, therefore, remains the same. Putting a Toyota badge on a BMW is deceptive. Of course, I'm sure many of the people who will actually buy one will have deep pockets anyway. So they won't care about repairs or resale value.
@@kyletrummel69 people with 20s have practically either voided it's warranty or have it tuned. These cars are going to be just like gtrs and are going to be hard to find without some kind of tune or mods done to the later on. If people were that concerned the least they'd do is pull some research about the car before they buy it.
Both cars would benefit from a proper manual transmission.
Mario not if you’re talking strictly about lap time.
We need two big ol billet turbos for that 4 cylinder.
It’s not a v6
Description box contains mistakes - it should also say Inline 6 not V-6. But thanks for the comparison!
Thanks for the heads-up. We fixed it.
The A70 and A80 Supra's had turbo and non turbo models. Even the A60 had an "L Type" model without fender flares ans with skinnier tires. So the 4 cyl is like normally aspirated model of the past.
I really hate automatic-transmissions.
And...why is that exactly?
@@jerrybillings3039 Didn't you see the problem he was having with the 4-cylinder? I guarantee the 4-cylinder BMW, not a Supra, will blow a head gasket or the first gear is going to go out. Watch that video again and watch his hot lap in the 4-cylinder BMW, because I refuse to call it a Supra.

Nope ! According to some informations close to the sources of Toyota, the gt86 which will become the GR86, will get the 2,4L Flat4 turbo from subaru. The lowest power of this engine is 255hp, maybe a bit more on the new GR86. So no need this bmw 4 cyl in the 86 !

altitude should Not be an issue in either car becuz the turbo maintains a constant pressure despite elevation change
So the 4 cylinder isn't even as fast as the Honda Civic Type R and costs how much more? And the V6 is basically the same time as cars that are 5 years older.
No. It's a i6 not a V6. Completely different from what's in lexuses and Toyotas.
