You might have misunderstood the dialogue between gerald royce and daemon. Daemon doesn't actually want runestone, he doesn't care for it in the slightest. He only said that to silence gerald about him killing rhea. As long as gerald keeps his mouth shut about that, daemon won't claim runestone away from him. That conflict got resolved right then and there.

Also, he's in King's Landing, suggesting he's back in the King's good graces to the partygoers. It's a really smart play in that sense since he functionally is and knows that Viserys wouldn't bother himself with setting the record straight. I think one of the main appeals of Daemon as a character is that he succeeds quite often, but always seems to fall short of gaining what he truly desires, either of his own accord or because the circumstances simply fall out of his favour.

If they only were granted 12 episodes. There would have been enough material to make at least one episode between EP 5 and 6
    - Daemon getting Laenas hand over the son of the sealord of Braavos
    - Laena claiming Vhagar
    - How the Criston Cole situation was handled
    - Rhaenyra and Harwins relationship building while also showing her early marriage with Leanor
    - Maybe a scene of Otto in Oldtown
    - How Viserys health changed (improved for a bit) after the change of Grandmaester from Mellos to Orwyle

I agree. I loved the season, though it 100% could have benefited from one or two more episodes. The only thing left out that I don't mind so much is Laena claiming Vhagar, but only because we got Aemond's scene with Vhagar in the end. Would have loved just a glimpse of Vhagar behind dunes or something, and Laena hiking up her skirts and marching toward the area with a determined or excited look on her face. That would have satisfied me.
But agree with all the rest wholeheartedly.

    • @jayk5114

Accurate, but I think the problem lies more with the fact that they are twins and look exactly alike and their names are pronounced so similarly it's hard to tell them apart within the show itself while watching, rather than not understanding which one (A or E) is on which side. Like you saying that Arryk is loyal to Aegon and Erryk is loyal to Rhanera is true, but within the show while watching its hard to know which one is which when they are in the same scene considering there's no distinct identifying factor that early on before they separate..

Truth. I had to rewind it the first time I watched because I had no idea what happened. I was like "who the fuck is Criston killing and why is he killing him?", and while I still enjoy it and think it was a great scene entirely (especially so because it very brutally shows us Criston's current mental state after being rejected by Rhanera and his decline into a more resentful and less honorable man) I think they could've done it slightly better by showing us more of Criston's POV rather than the dinner table (although the choice to go with the table and show us from their perspective is still respectable and almost a little bit of a subversion because generally we'd see something like that from either one of the combatants POV). Either way, every single episode of this first season is better than the entirety of seasons 7 and 8 of GoT in my opinion, so there's really not much to complain about.

To me what's working the magic in episode 8 is how desperate Rhaenyra is before the throne scene. We see that she has no support and when Rhaenys seems to be a dead end too we get this scene with Viserys. We see her lose hope completely and cry out as her father is delirious only a shadow of himself so when the doors open and we understand that the man pulled himself through pain and madness for the love of his daughter that's what makes the scene powerful.
Kinda reminds me of the hopeless relief we got when Oberyn told Tyrion he'd be his champion. The whole episode is a slow setup to show you that there is no hope, only to subvert you with one ray of light that was there the whole time and delivered with amazing acting.

There's so much that's good in that episode and it's all down to the acting and characters. The throne room scene, with viserys bravely making the walk to the throne, vaemond losing it and then getting a sword through the head... then the dinner scene. Viserys being brave and moving his family so much as to make up with each other, the renewed friendship and admiration between rhanenyra and alicent, the obnoxious aegon teasing his brother and the Sinister aemund sitting there and glaring at luke.

    8) Episode 9 (a bit boring, but super tense and I liked Aegon and Alicent. I wasn't bothered by the ending)
    7) Episode 5 (I really liked the wedding, especially Alicent's entrance with the green dress and how in the end the king collapses and there is a rat drinking the spilled blood. The music for the last part was FIRE)
    6) Episode 4 (I really enjoyed the way intimacy was shown compared to the rest of Got, especially with particular attention to the female character)
    5) Episode 1 (perfect pilot)
    4) Episode 3 (I loved the symbolism of the stag, the battle and Viserys talking to Alicent in front of the fire. An underrated episode imo)
    3) Episode 7 (Oustanding from start to end, especially the confrontation after Aemond loses an eye and Laenor's "death". I liked how they decided to give him a happy ending)
    2) Episode 10 (it's the episode I have rewatched the most, that final chase scene is one of the best scenes in all of Got/HotD, and the payoffs were satisfying)
    1) Episode 8 (yep, it's obviously episode 8. When Viserys walked to the throne I literally cried like I cried at the Red Wedding. Such an emotional episode)
Overall this season was great and my hope was restared. I went into HotD with zero expectations and already after episode 1 I was thrown back into the world. In some aspects HotD is already on par or even superior compared to Got, so I pray they don't waste its potential.

I mostly agree, but I think the ending of episode 9 is legitimately problematic, and it even brings down episode 10 a little. Not a lot, I just want to beat Rhaenys with a crowbar cuz she looks more like a punchable module someone loaded up to fill space rather than an actual character. It gets worse when you watch the commentary on it, like, just having her fly off and break Aegon's delusion a little would've been fine, but they wanted spectacle at the cost of an entire character. Understanding the context of the situation, her killing the Hightowers in that situation, after already needlessly murdering people in the sept would have ended such a massive conflict before it even started and saved countless lives. Without spoiling anything, Aemond alone does something so realistically reckless (not exactly a spoiler, but like a real-world consequence of the stupid sh*t he'd obviously try to do that is otherwise pointless or even counterproductive), that he makes Kermit look like the righteous protagonist by the end (still no spoilers). All the sh*t she keeps smirking at in the next episode seems so hypocritical once you realise that a human being capable of something like that would truly have to think of small folk as beneath her in every manner imaginable, something she can step on while climbing to her ivory tower. All in all, it makes a decent character (I had actually started liking her until that very moment) into something worse than a bad character... it makes her a tool for plot contrivance that needn't exist in the first place.

I didn’t mind the time jump, I actually found it pretty well executed. I also liked the search for Aegon in episode 9, it gave us time to spend some moments with Aemond and Cole, as well as to familiarize with the twins. As episode 4, the sex episode, is actually the best of the whole season, but I guess it’s a matter of taste.

This should have been a 11 or 12 episode season. There were some minor characters (Harwin, Laena) and supporting characters (Laenor, Criston) that they could have fleshed out more, and in doing so, explore even more layers of major characters (Daemon, Rhaenyra, Alicent). Minor plots and questions could have been answered too:
    - How did Criston get out of the mess in episode 5 and still remained a Kingsguard, and overall explore Criston a bit more, his character was severely dwarfed and detracted, one of the major complaints I had about this season
    - How Daemon and Laena developed their relationship, and what his first family meant to Daemon
    - Same for Harwin and Rhaenyra
    - How Alicent's perspective morphed during the time jump
    - Maybe even explore some fantasy/magical/conspiracy theories, like if the Citadel was working with the Hightowers to bring about the demise of the dragons

    7. The rogue prince (ep.2)
    6. Second of his name (ep.3)

    3. The green council (ep.9)
    2. The lord of the tides (ep.8)
    1. Driftmark (ep.7)
My pick for number 3 is surely the most controversial one but being a massive fan of the greens i love the interactions in this episode. Another positive thing is the exposure we get for quite a lot of characters from the greens' camp and if it wasn't for the mishandled ending and the gross scene between Larys and Alicent perhaps i'd put it even higher on my list. Overall i can understand why people don't enjoy this episode as much as i do but in my opinion it's still criminally underrated.

Great video. Started watching some of your Last of Us content then dove in and watched some of your Game of Thrones and House of The Dragon content. Great series overall and felt more like the classic first 4 seasons of Game of Thrones. My rankings would be.
    1. The Lord of The Tides (ep. 8)
    2. Driftmark (ep 7)
Tier to themselves. I keep going back and forth between which episode was the better episode.
    3.The Black Queen (ep. 10)
    4. Second of His Name (Ep, 3)
    5. The Heirs to The Dragon (Ep. 1)
    6. We Light The Way (Ep. 5)
    7. The Rogue Prince (Ep. 2)
    8. The Green Council (Ep. 9)
    9. King Of The Narrow Sea (Ep. 4)
    10. The Princess and The Queen (Ep. 6)
I do not believe none are bad, most are good to great.
    - Found it interesting that the same director directed episodes 4 and 9. Both have characters travel through Flea Bottom. Both just have the characters walk and talk the entire episode w/o moving the plot much. Liked episode 9 more because of the opening sequence.
    - Really liked We Light The Way. It was a fun, thrill ride. Was funny and thrilling at the same time. I do feel like there should have been an episode between this episode and The Princess and The Queen, but as a standalone episode it was a good time. I understood what Cole was doing fine.
    - Second of His Name grew on me on multiple rewatches. From Daemon not speaking during the last 15 minutes, to Viserys demeanor changing throughout the episode as he keeps drinking. Viserys and Rhaenrya confrontation.
    - The Black Queen could go down further down my list if it was not for Aemond/Vhagar chase scene. Aemond speeches has been great in episodes 7-10. Not in the same tier as The Lord of The Tides and Driftmark because I expected more out of the season finale. Felt like they redeemed themselves in the last 15 minutes. Was tired of the failed birth scenes. Felt they spent too much time talking about battle plans.
    - The Heirs to The Dragon climbed my rankings. Great job introducing fans of Game of Thrones and casuals to the show. Did a great job showcasing each character and who they are.

Here's my ranking, worst to best:
Episode 5, only episode I would consider bad in the season, terrible writing
Episode 3, overly slow followed by an unsatisfying conclusion to the Crabfeeder
Episode 6, confusing but overall a decent and interesting ep
Episode 9, a good episode slightly ruined by the ending
Episode 2, a slower but very interesting ep
Episode 4, good ep, very eventful and dramatic
Episode 10, really good ending of the season
Episode 8, amazing acting and development of the characters
Episode 1, incredibly good introduction into the world, a dramatic and memorable episode
Episode 7, I was absolutely blown away by this one, a little slow in the beginning but that which follows completely makes up for it. The growing conflict between the characters is handled really well
I'd say this season has been pretty good. Not amazing, but it could've been a lot worse so I'm happy. My biggest problem is the pacing which is going all over the place this season. Some episodes barely anything happens while in others you can barely keep up. it will likely be better in season 2 since we've reached the main event. If the story was allowed to breathe more I think it could've been much better. If I would compare it to GOT it would rank similarly to how I feel about season 5 and 6. Great television, but with some noticeable flaws that could've been prevented. The only episodes I felt that could rival early GOT was 1 and 7. 5 in my opinion was almost season 8 level of quality. The writing in that episode sticks out like a sore thumb

    • @andrejmarin1907
      @andrejmarin1907 Год назад +3

This was way better than season 5 and 6 for me. Season 5 had some good moments, but was overall dull in my opinion, also some nonsense started to in creep that would become standard in the later seasons. Season 6 I have really started to hate as time went on, it doesn’t hold a candle to seasons 1-4 and it only looks good because seasons 7 and 8 were travesties. Episodes 1-8 barely anything happens and what does is nonsensical and extremely dumb. Episodes 9 and 10 look good, but it is spectacle over substance. Battle of the bastards after you get over the visuals makes no sense and has 0 tactics and the sept blowing up has 0 consequences for Cersy.
Season 5 I would rewatch only certain moments and I don’t ever see myself rewatching season 6. Meanwhile I plan a full rewatch of HOTD Season 1 and looking forward to every episode, even the weak ones have good scenes.
      Just opinion

To me this series had only major flaw in terms of character development (or for better phrasing, "plot hole"): Criston Cole
This man, just to name the most prominent features, murdered an unharmed man in the courtroom during a wedding feast, killed in cold blood the head of a major house during a council in front of the hand, the consort queen and other major houses heads and in the series we never see him sustaining any visible punishment nor even someone acknowledge it, only Harold Westerling looked like he gave a damn but nothing came out of it apart from him resigning (then again, without any repercussion)
I wish they explored more this plot point

    • @user-nv2wt4hi8t

Honestly, most of that doesn't bother me at all, although I certainly, certainly agree he needed more time to show his change, given 10 damn years passes. Him killing Joffrey doesn't bother me as it can be interpreted that Cole took Joffrey's words as forceful blackmail endangering his and Rhaenyra's lives, plus Joffrey pulled a knife midfight and we don't know what started it. Beesbury, to me, is his lowest moment, but still Beesbury was accusing everyone of regicide. Not excusable but it was an accident and no one at that point cared because Otto was in full 'I will hang any dissenters' mode like we saw in the same episode, so he was planning on there being casualties for people acting against them. And I did like that Westerling called him out. But yeah, I do definitely agree that he needed more, or even still, should have more, in the later Seasons that continues to flesh him out.

  • @eadred9164

Rhaenys aside, I thought Green Council was an excellent episode. Without comparing it to the book (like badass cole instead of dbag cole) & just going by show l the ep felt like a classic white house political thriller with a "race against time" feel, with start to finish suspense. When Otto was purging, Beesbury screaming, Caswell hanging..I was on the edge of my seat. The dark visuals & the Hightower score set the tone. KL without Viserys already felt so ominous & claustrophobic. The sinister low lighting, Otto being calm & nefarious as ever. Alicent trapped by her allegiance. The dim rays of the setting sun illuminating the room. The visuals portrayed the suffocating feeling really well. The dialogues b/w Alicent, Otto, Aemond etc. left a lot of food for thought. The coronation sequence was pure historygasm & excelled in the little details. TGC was amazing in bringing to life the emotional turmoil the most interesting character in the dance, King Aegon II went through before the crowning. If you're a neutral viewer, the vibe of Green Council was the closest thing to 1st season GoT...the tension, the uncertainty, the ruthlessness, the amorality & a sinking feeling of injustice with the rug being pulled from under your feet. Ofc lord forbid the bad guys are on top for 1 episode, so they had to give u 5 mins of that Rhaenys "happy ending".

Its hard to pass up an episode that had such a great scene in the throne walk but personally, I still have to give it to the finale. Not only is the dragon chase scene extremely tense and well shot, It also sets up for a really promising next season as I was pretty disappointed with a lot of things in this season. But even without the dragon scene, there is some amazing emotional acting rhaenyra and some great political intrigue and setup that felt a lot more believable than decisions in other episodes. Maybe I'm relying to much on season 2 being good but with the development of alliances and the ensuing war, it seems like the story can actually have consequences for actions now and can really start developing.

0:50 my understanding was that Daemon was implying that he wouldn’t claim Runestone if Royce kept his mouth shut. And Daemon didn’t get arrested for murder and there aren’t a bunch of rumors going around about the murder so I’d assume that Daemon never went back to Runestone

I think people give Episode 9 (especially the ending) way too much flack. As a book reader, there are a lot of changes to the series that are evident in just this one episode and it's brilliant to see and genuinely exciting, like Harold Westerling not being dead for years by the time the Green Council happens. The Green Council scene itself was brilliant as everyone says and admittedly the episode did lose quite a lot of steam, however seeing Aemond and Ser Criston's dialogue and Erryk and Arryk's was interesting.
Anyway, the ending. I really like it for a few reasons. First, it emphasises even more how Helaena's dialogue needs to be watched carefully as she can easily spoil key plot events. Secondly, as was mentioned, there's a pretty damn good character arc for Aegon in this episode. And then there's the elephant in the room.
I can't properly address why Rhaenys' entrance is actually fantastic in my eyes without spoilers so here I'll just say, it sets up later plot points related to the people of King's Landing and the ruling class and dragons and also sets up Rhaenys' further role to play in the Dance. Also it looked spectacular and was just a brilliant moment.
Oh and yeah, everything involving Otto and Allicent was perfect. As such I think the only real downside to the episode was the search for Aegon and I wouldn't even argue it was bad.
