The show is based on a series of memoirs written by the main character himself. I think it helps that all these things in the show stemmed from James' real-life experiences.
I read all four of Herriot's books in this series over thirty years ago. Talk about writing "what you know"! I've never been a fan of non-fiction unless it was the Time-Life Science and Nature Libraries I bought with my paper route earnings as a teenager. But Herriot's prose is so delightful you forget he's recounting his actual life--a brilliant writer. So, when the series came out, I was honestly a bit dubious. The books are classics at this point, how can they possibly be retold on film? Well, BBC pulls it off. And @Abbie Emmons, it's THE WRITING! You've done an excellent job of drilling into your viewers that one medium isn't "better" than another, every one stands or falls based on the quality of story telling and how well the Story is written....
Absolutely Amazing. Abbie and Kate strike again. I was so invested in the video that I didn't even realise it was short until it ended. Keep up the great work guys.
Excellent review and tips Abbie. I would also reccomend the dialougue and subtext in the British tv series "When the Boat Comes In "from 1976 - 1981 set in England's North East from 1919.
Thanks for sharing this take on slow-burn romance. It's like as if the protagonist is waiting in the wings for a favorable wind and then it did come ...what if it didn't? Still tremendously passionate ( Without the triumph) much like the Sydney Carton, Charles Darnay and Lucie Manette in the Tale of Two Cities. Thanks so much to my Grandfather who used to read the classics to me and did enjoy reading Dickens to me when I was a tween. But why did he ramble on about Sydney Carton and Charles Darney? Suddenly it clicked. He became a widower at a very early age and did fall in love just once several years after his wife passed on. This time to a much younger woman. He was priggish and she wasn't and this disparity in outlook lead her to have a fling with a soldier from a barrack nearby. He met her a few days before she was departing with her husband back to Britain. Ironically she said that she still loved him she just wanted him to marry her. He had refrained because he felt that if he married again it would strain the relationship he had with his only surviving memory of his departed wife and that was my mother(who was also his only child. ) Also he was fighting a difficult custody battle with his father and mother-in-law for my ( Affluent Dairy Farm Owners) as they became her foster parents after the demise of my grandmother. They were determined to prove that my Grandfather would be unable to raise a tween daughter single-handedly. Fortunately for my Grandfather the office of the opposing Lawyer was broken into and ransacked on the night prior to the hearing. There was pandemonium at the hearing on the next day. My grandfather won the custody of his daughter who he cherished till the day he died. His battle to win her over had just begun because she was accustomed to a wealthy lifestyle so he worked long hours to keep her content- he had her home-schooled under the tutelage of the best available mentors. In order to achieve all this he worked long into the night so taught her how to use a Springfield 30/6 rifle to protect herself in case of break-ins. This while he was burning the midnight oil Talk about the things people do for someone they love. WOW! Abbie and Kate, you've really lit a fire under me. Thanks so much, OPPS! forgot something after his last romance with the woman who apparently broke his heart my Grandfather never loved again and soon became a sad and pensive man. Many times he told me," You must be ready to fight to keep the woman you love." I sometimes conjecture did he regret not fighting hard enough to keep the woman he loved?
I want to check out this show and around the world in 80 days. There was a show recommended on a past episode but can't remember what it was. I think about two brothers or something? I wish I could remember. Kate and abbie, just leave a list of great bbc shows to watch!!
My recently watched through this show with my parents! And I agree with this video! I’ve seen other shows that drag out a romance through seasons and seasons so it was refreshing to see a romance come together within only 3 seasons. (I also love the side characters in the show too!;)
I would really like to see an interview on the show Little House On The Prairie because there are some good character dynamics and chemistry between them.
I've been a devoted follower of your channel for years, and I'm thrilled to announce that I've recently completed my very first novella! I couldn't contain my excitement and decided to share it with the world by uploading it on RUclips. While I'm eager to receive reviews and feedback on my book, I've encountered a small obstacle: most of my friends aren't avid readers, making it challenging to obtain constructive criticism. Can you guide me towards any platforms or communities where I can connect with other aspiring writers like myself, who might be interested in reviewing my work?
Abbie, I just purchased your master class for Scrivener. I tried downloading your template but it doesnt seem to be working. As if something is wrong with the file. Is there a business contact that I can reach out to in order to troubleshoot. Getting the template is what sold me on purchasing the class in the first place.
Abby, how do I write a great story using characters that are not human? (Let's say a... Blue Llama or a pink wolf pup) how do I make them come to life in my story and to make people want to read more about them?
I am so very lost with the story I’m writing! I originally wrote the first draft of my fantasy novel and it was going great. And then I took a very long break from it, reread it and took some notes, and now I’m back at the editing portion-but! I was thinking about splitting it into two separate books, the first, however, would end on a cliffhanger and start right back up somewhere along the lines of the first book’s ending and progress through there until it ultimately ends (a two book fantasy series “duology” if you will). But how should I incorporate the 3-act story structure if I do this? I have many events and subplots that could take place as the story progresses, but considering that the first book ends on a major cliffhanger, how do you think I should follow the 3-act story structure and use it best? Thank you so much for any pieces of advice or any tips!
Hi I wanted to ask what writers that are not born English speakers should do. I know how to speak English but it isn't my mother tongue and I sometimes struggle while writing, so is there any advice you could give on this😅❤❤
Possibly a minor point, but the BBC has nothing to do with the making of this version of All Creatures. In fact, quite bizarrely and probably to their lasting regret, they turned down the option on it and it was taken up by Channel 5 in the UK.
I enjoy the series, but man, the dollop of soap-opera-ish melodrama can be heavy handed. Downton Abbey ladled it on even heavier. The Brits seem to be in this phase at the moment. The romance though ... in typical traditional TV fashion, they stretch it out over as many episodes as possible to get as much mileage out of it as they can to the point of it being a bit ridiculous. I enjoy the show, but i don't agree with some of the writers' narrative choices.
I don't find it helpful for writing when the examples are from television and film - which happens a lot with "writing tip" creators. Translate that into print for me, a scene in a book and you'll have my attention.😊
I would say the romance was written by God. James Herriot books are nonfiction, so no mere mortal concocted their chemistry. That being said, a script must still be written, so there is some talent involved.
The show is based on a series of memoirs written by the main character himself. I think it helps that all these things in the show stemmed from James' real-life experiences.
His books are so wonderful. My father used to read them to me.

There's non-fiction and then there is narrative non-fiction (like memoir). Two different animals. A great memoir reads just like a novel.
It's one of my favorite shows. Every character is so distinct and interesting. It's good to see you're a fan too.

YES!! All Creatures Great and Small!! 😍I watch that show with my family and love it, wow.
As she had her, Abbie can’t help but talk about the tea! 😅

You’ve inspired me to write so much! Thank youu❤
It's like y'all read my mind, thank you for this!
This is really amazing! The video feels short actually 😂. Thanks for sharing 😁.

When I was a kid and found this show on PBS, I was really disappointed it wasn't a nature show.
The real slow burn of the show is Siegfried and Audrey.
The example I think of is PB&J from the office

The anime series Rent-A-Girlfriend comes to mind
I thought the actress was Sophie Winkelman at first.
You look like that one villain in the incredibles 2
