I've found that in writing teen fiction, the bully and nerd enemies to lovers trope is overused. Many teenagers don't have all that drama in their lives. Yes, there's bullying and social segregation. But what most teenagers go through is a self discovery, and not the entire villain arc thing many enemies to lovers tropes preach. In my own story, the teens have no reason to particularly hate each other. She doesn't trust him based on past experience, and he isn't particularly open to young love and all that because of past trauma. They spend way more time being friends and exploring their individual personalities than they do exploring their attraction to each other. I find that that care and light treading around your crush is way more relatable than hating the person then loving them in fifty chapters. Not that there's anything wrong with it, of course. I've read tons of books like that, and loved it. I'm just saying, I'm a teen, and if teens hate you at the beginning of the book, chances are they'll still hate you at the end, or at the most understand your choices

I slowburn my romance about the span of 2 books. The first one covers "enemies to allies" then a nice betrayal in the middle. Near the end there is the uncovering of some hidden information, that makes them allies again because they both know who the real enemy is. This new alliance finally forms the start of a friendship and the joined tackling of a big obsticle (climax). This climax contains a little sequence of fake dating where actually some sparks fly. The fallout at the end is a hard breaking point for both characters that forces them to flee together into almost certain death.
In book 2 we see them licking their wounds, saving each other's butts and becoming best friends. They fall in love but can't tell each other because of their own misbelief, and a war separating them. My male MC lies and "betrays" his love midpoint to discourage her being loyal and following him into war, because he just couldn't stand the thought of her dying. He does that even though he knows she probably take another man (from the enemies side), but he knows she will be saver there then with the rebels he is with. So a half-hearted love-triangle of some sorts lol. Also my MC's both are from different cultural background and social status, making this kind of a forbidden love. But well despite all they never seem to cut each other lose, even through war and hardship. When they rejoin they re-build their friendship. Things are getting serious. Again they have to take defeat and flee for their lives. My guy then gets caught and is supposed to be executed for treason. Finally they have their first kiss and confess their love. He almost dies. They become a couple after he recovers and of course are still joined in a fight for the rebellion. They are now stronger then ever. Eventually they are at the peak of their strength, defeating their enemy (climax) and bringing their relationship to its highest point with their first kid on the way. But my novels wouldn't be my novels without a dark turn and gut wrenching cliffhanger at the end. So their fate as a couple will be decided in the 3rd book, where we will have a "long time no see" situation and some dark secrets awaiting. Will they or won't they end happy together? I hope that's cookin slow enough 😉

@@benjaminramsey498 Hey there. I have no doubt that you will find a good romantic subplot for your Characters, you know them well, and giving them a romance is only one more good thing to fight for. Even if your MC's main conflict is to make his father proud, giving him someone he could lose in battle or something maybe makes him grow even more as a character :). You could make it interesting by making his father hate the idea of this relationship or make MC's father and the father of the prince enemies. Brutal and dark stories hold great opportunities for romance!
My characters grow together as a couple greatly because of trauma. They each are good souls fighting for the thing they feel is right (one for his loved ones, one for justice), but have both been treated cruel in life. They oppose and don't like each other in the beginning, because they just assume the worst in the others intentions. The war they get involved in is also a fight against their own inner demons, still they make each other grow as people. Thats what makes them a believable and great couple in my eyes and just adds a little bit of light within all this tragedy that is my story lol.

I tend to enjoy "soulmates" type romances, where the couple are similar to each other, and yet different in precisely the right ways for them complement each other perfectly.
They may struggle to appreciate those differences at first, or admire and envy the qualities the other person has which they themselves lack.
I also like soulmates with age differences. There is something very moving about two adults with an age gap and a world of different experiences between them, somehow connecting with each other more than they have with anyone else in their entire lives. I enjoy watching the characters struggle to overcome their insecurities and misgivings and (hopefully, although endings vary) finally realize that love is precious enough to pursue in spite of them all.
And I still like them even if they don't get together in the end, because sometimes it's enough for two soulmates like that to support each other. Their feelings aren't platonic, but they don't act on them and form a romantic relationship.
Whatever the romance, I like it when they push and inspire each other to grow and improve and pursue their life passions.

This is actually really helpful for me. I'm ace, and I've never dated anyone. I've had crushes (romantically, after I got to know the person and found that I admired them greatly) but I've never been in a relationship before, so it's difficult for me to write people in a relationship. I'm a very anxious person, and social interaction never came easily to me, so I constantly worry about making the relationship seem real and natural. I mostly just go off of what I would like to have in a relationship: very straightforward blunt communication, and a lot of physical affection.

Just study lots of different characters and even real people and their dynamics with each other. You can always get a second opinion if you're worried it's not realistic enough. Have fun with writing. Besides, fiction isn't meant to be completely realistic, so don't worry too much if it doesn't seem real or natural.

This is just my take on applying Abby's pointers to AtLA. It was so good because the viewer is fed the information piece by piece, like a trail of breadcrumbs that we WANT to follow, rather than getting a huge info dump that bores us. Example: we don't learn about sub-bending (blood, metal) until a main character is forced to work with it. Or they only introduce a city when the character visits for the first time. In EP1, we only know that there are four elements that people can bend, and we're at the South Pole. It helps that AtLA's magic system is super simple as well, because viewers digest bending immediately and then move on to the good stuff: character development.
TL;DR: hold back all the details you're excited to share until the protagonists have to directly engage with it.
      Hope this helps!

Abbie...just a quick note to thank you and Jenna Moreci from the bottom of my heart for your most excellent tutelage in writing. I just achieved a major milestone as I finally managed to complete the plot for my book! I think the tipping point came from blending my own literary "smoothie" under your direction. I could think of only around seven books and movies that had inspired me, but further consideration revealed many, many more. I began concocting various "recipes", and, when combined with ideas I already had, OUT POPPED MY PLOT! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

I'd love to see some tips on writing forbidden love! I'm writing it at the moment and can't seem to quite get the chemistry going, despite having them both conflicted internally about their feelings for the other, and having outside conflict from societal beliefs etc.

  • @annaewrites

I have a very unique idea for a plot, but I'm not sure how to write it-
Basically, it's your typical love triangle with the pick me girl leading two boys on (which the readers can't get enough of, because they're both incredibly boyfriend material) BUT over time, the two guys in the love triangle fall for EACH OTHER because the girl is careless with their emotions, causing them to move on.
Not sure how to execute this, but I know I would for sure read this if it was already a thing.

I wonder what you would have to say about how to write good romance for characters in a pre-established relationship at the start of the book? Not ex-lovers but like they are currently in love.

  • @hanmira
    @hanmira 2 года назад +8

What's the internal conflict both of my characters are personally struggling with!
What kind of relationship do they have with each other ag the start of the story and why?
How long have they known each other?
    How did they meet?
How much does Character A know of Character B's internal conflict?
How much does Character B know of Chracter A's internal conflict?
Are they keeping any secrets from each other? If yes, why?

I love how this video is helpful for anyone who wants to write within the romance genre, but also people who don't. Relationships are something that exist in (almost) everyone's lives. Being able to understand how to write romance - specifically a slow burning romance - is useful for every genre, if that is something you want to happen within your plot. So many books and movies include romance and relationships without drawing away from the main genre. Like Harry Potter, for example. *Spoiler*
Ron and Hermione have a slow burning romance throughout the series, but when describing Harry Potter, I'd never use the word romance. :)

I watched this video for some good tips, and with this being the first real project that I wanted to write, I was guilty of it being a full-blown romance with not a whole lot of development. I'm re-writing the story to make it a much better-paced build, slow romance burn is great when handled well. With your tips, I've made it much better and I'm nearing the conclusion of my story.

I've been trying for forever to figure out how to put into words what actually makes some romances good in books, and you just did it for me. 😂 The way both go through an arc is what makes it *chefs kiss* amazing. There is a whole book on the story beats for romance novels, based on the 'Save the Cat' story structure! The book is called ' Romancing the Beat' and it is very eye-opening to how, regardless of tropes, every romance also has some beats it needs to hit to be believable! Loved it so much that I use both Save the Cat and Romancing the Beat when I outline, just to make sure I hit both :)!

The romance will be side story, on for like three fourths if the story they only teamed up simply to use each ither for their own goals and at the end they are more open with each ither lije what's the other's goals and why they teamed up. Second phase will be from them helping each other for their own goal to them genuinely wanting to helo one another. And finally at the end they will get together.hearts will be broken, friendship tested and lots and lots of betrayal
