My name is Abbie Emmons I teach writers how to make their stories matter by harnessing the power and psychology of storytelling, transforming their ideas into a masterpiece, and creating a lifestyle that makes their author dreams come true.
Story isn’t about “what happens” - it’s about how what happens affects and transforms the characters. I believe that there is an exact science (a recipe, if you will) behind a perfect story. And if you know what ingredients you need, you can create your own perfect story with ease and confidence. That’s what we talk about every week on this channel - and if it’s something you’re into, be sure to subscribe and join this community!
I'm writing a slow burn, and this is already really helpful
I am crazy about this show - perfect example for creating a slow burn romance.
I want my characters to have enemies to lovers, slowburn romance. This helps so much!
Thanks for this video, Abbie. I'm writing a slow burn at the moment, and your tips are insanely useful.
I decided to give this show a watch and I'm officially obsessed. I binged it in a few days and I haven't done that in a long time! I'm eagerly awaiting the next season and I hope it goes on for a long time!
Thanks for this " Eye-opener" Till now I was only seeing the romance through the eyes of the protagonist. Mine isn't a romance novel but thankfully after watching your earlier videos I decided to include a romance and I'm so thankful I did. I find the advice on whether the characters are aware of each other's internal conflict particularly helpful to develop the relationship further. Also, the suggestion about developing the character as individuals before introducing them is pure genius in my humble opinion---You sisters Rock!!!!!👏👏👏
Thanks for all your advices! You changed my perspective on writing!!! I've been waching your videos all day long! They are super helpful! Please keep posting videos like this!🥰🥰
Thanks a lot for this and every other video. Your work literally transformed my writing career for the better.
and make us want to reread the book! I'm not a rereader by nature but every once in a while, a book just falls into my hands and rebounds into my heart! # to have and to hold
My next book has a slow burn romance 😊 Love Miss Scarlet and the Duke and All Creatures Great and Small, both such brilliant series! ❤
Omg these romance videos are super helpful!!!
Day 2 of asking for a video about how to involve a prophecy in a fantasy story... I love your vids, slay
Got me giggling like a maniac god bless abbie-
You two never fail to deliver the goodies.
Wow I reloaded my page right as this posted.... This advice will definitely be useful!
SUPER HELPFUL, but I'm not totally sure how to mix slow burn with enemies to lovers, (especially because character B hates character A, but character A secretly likes A), and that's what I'm trying to do in my book. Any tips on mixing them?
Great podcast Abbie! Could you make a video about Best Friends to Lovers? Thanks!
I don't believe I am that early!! I have read the 100 days of sunlight, and impatiently waiting for sep 19 ...
Your tips are great..👍🏻👍🏻
I'm new to this channel Abbie and thus far I really like your content, I'm currently working on my first official writing project that I hope to publish one day. However where I struggle most is how to describe characters thoughts and naturally flow to the dialogue. I hope you can make a video where you can help me with that if you haven't made it yet.
Any recommendations for a slow burn where the characters aren't clashing and have no animosity?
I'm writing a slow burn, but it won't end up having the fire entirely lit, for story purposes. I think the other way around is always expected
How would one write a slow burn romance between rivals?
I am currently experimenting with writing a sci fi narrative about a AG Pilot competing in an anti gravity racing league, and their love interest is a pilot from a rival anti gravity racing corporation.
I’m not sure how to answer your question, but that sounds like such a cool concept! I’d definitely give it a read.
@@YumnuP The themes of the story would be about political collusion and corporate greed, and the overall plot would be about this corrupt era of the sport and it's downfall
Ag racing has essentially become a blood sport, with a notable plot point involving an incident in the year 2165 from an experimental 'super- missile' from one of the teams resulting in a cave-in on one of the tracks, resulting in the deaths of six pilots, including the protagonist's love interest
You mean something like Jon Snow and Ygritte from Game of Thrones?
@@FlixandPixels Sort of. It's actually a fanfiction of the Wipeout series. I was intending my protagonist to be young British woman who is a pilot for FEISAR (Federal European Industrial Science and Research - one of the anti gravity racing corporations) who falls in love with a rival pilot the antagonistic Russia-based Tigron team - a team that is morally bankrupt and deeply involved with the corruption within the race comission
@@unicorntomboy9736 A gamer writer hahah Nice! Now you're talking my business
Well, Abbie just gave you the gold. Spend it wisely 😉
Yea my slow burn romance is based off what’s “not” going on in my life. I figured I’d write it out and let “fiction” turn into reality…maybe
Scotland Yard is not a detective agency. They are the police.
I am currently watching Miss Scarlet and the Duke, having just finished series/season 2. I find that I enjoy the characters, but actually don't love their romance.
I am team Moses.
Team Moses here. Also I want more of the police work.
Ross and Rachel are an awesome slow burn. Ross loves Rachel but doesn't have the confidence to ask her directly. They go with others, get jealous, break up, but always want each other underneath it all.
Turkish subtitle please🙏
My problem is witty banter. As a very socially awkward person I really struggle to create dialogue, especially witty stuff
❤❤❤❤❤
I tried watching this show and just couldn't get into it, which was a disappointment. I like the genre and the time period and love slow burn :(
I, too, was so frustrated and disappointed with the last season. The Duke was absent for two episodes, and he's also sleeping with someone else. Where was this so-called 'slow burn'? There was nothing going between the two leads - writers failed miserably.
@@LV-bk4it I didn't even get that far. Maybe 4 episodes before I gave up. I found Eliza kind of annoying and definitely didn't feel any chemistry between her and "the Duke."
henlo
The 4th episode of the first season of this show was unacceptably misandrist, but the rest of that season was entertaining after i skipped it
SPOILERS FOR ONE TREE HILL AND FRIENDS:
Honestly, to me, the slow burn has had its time. It's now just frustrating instead of tantalising. Teasing a relationship in modern media has gotten to the point that it's just plain teasing. And no one likes to constantly be bullied by writers like that. In TV, if a relationship is teased longer than 1 season and nothing happens, I'm bored of it already. There are only a select few instances that I can think of where it works. It's the whole tired "will they, won't they" debacle. It's lazy. Like the writer can't think of any other intrigue apart from romantic tension. Give me obstacles the couple can face WHILE together!
The best relationship I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing would be Hayley James and Nathan Scott from One Tree Hill. There is chemistry and teasing for maybe a quarter of the FIRST season before the payoff occurs. Then throughout the rest of the other NINE SEASONS they remain together. They have many ups and downs (some very, VERY big downs), but they deal with it and become stronger for it. To me, the relationship between two characters will always be the more interesting plot versus the teasing of a potential relationship. The only instance where, imo, slow burn works, is if they're enemies to lovers, or the couple builds a platonic friendship first (Monica x Chandler - never felt like teasing despite they're chemistry as friends, but it didn't feel out of place when they got together either. And that was because of the earlier platonic, chemistry-ridden friendship).
First❤
This aged poorly....
The last season was awful. The Duke was absent for two episodes, and then he slept with someone else. There was no slow-burn only frustration at how badly the writers handled their so-called romance.
