I'm glad u made this cuz it needed to be made. None of us noticed as children but when I rewatch these old shows I be side eyeing cuz they really threw colorism in our faces as kids.
This also reminds me of Loca in Thats so raven. The tall dark black girl was the ring leader of the bullies whilst the other bullies who followed behind her were petite, latina/white. and She was seen as aggressive and intimidating and her love interest (Eddie) was also afraid her presenting her as undesirable.
@@brialove2311 well I mean the first episode the new aunt viv came Will literally spent 3-5 min saying SOMETHING (*cough cough light skin*) looks diff about Aunt Viv but yeah that switch up will always be mad suss and 1st Viv>2nd Viv always

Martin is the only one that is a reach to me. LITERALLY EVERYONE got clowned on in Martin. That's what made it so funny is that no one was safe. Martin would make fun of Gina's forehead all the time. Also Pam was just as savage to Martin as he was to her. She had some funny ass jokes. Martin was NOT colorist.
Really? Pam would roast Martin on his ears, height, and the fact that Gina made more money than him. It wasn't always one sided banter. There was balance and they would joke back n forth offscreen as well.
And in all grown up, they went straight for it. In an episode where a talent scout wants Susie's voice but Angelica face singing it. And it takes like two seasons for Susie to forgive Angelica for agreeing to lip sync to her best friends singing.

There wasn't a light skinned black girl to play her off of, though.
@Sarcastic Miasma So was her mom. God, I hated that show (okay, I didn't hate it when it first came out, but it got worse; I do give it props for being one of the few kid shows that talked about Kwanzaa with any kind of seriousness).
True but the trio of bullies that always antagonized raven theres the tall dark skin who's mad aggressive and loves off Eddie although he doesn't feel an ounce of attraction for her
Yea everybody hates Chris does not get the regonition it definitely deserves I feel like that was such a great under rated show that deserves more credit and seasons than it got
To be fair, Tanya treats Chris like garbage and every girl likes Drew who is light skinned. And the first crush Chris had treated him like crap and made out with his brother, and was dark skinned. And then the light skinned girl that replaced her was much nicer to Chris. Still an awesome show though with an incredibly positive portrayal of a dark skinned father.
Kimberly Catrini I don’t agree at all. The reason being is because Chris was a young dark skinned black man who was treated like shit by everyone including his family. And then you have shows like Everybody loves Raymond. And when you think about it they are completely flipped. I’m not a big fan of Everybody Hates Chris.
It’s crazy when we was young watching these classic shows and not realizing the Colorism in them. 🤦🏾♂️ Let’s also not forget that Black people created these black shows enforcing these stereotypes 😔 #ProtectDarkSkinWomenAtAllCost
Many people are mixed.... let's say black and white.... Can these black people who are mixed be racist and colorist at the same time? Can their Black DNA be colorist and they're White DNA be Racist? What percentage of black must a person have in order to be considered black? What is the lightest shade a black person can be to still be considered black? Is Jada Pinkett Black? Is Mariah carey Black? Is Jidenna Black? Is Cardi B Black? ALL OF THEM HAVE A BLACK FATHER
This didn’t used to bother me when I was younger because I didn’t realize how often dark-skinned women were being flat out rejected in the industry... but it like really really annoys me now, the more that I realize that practically no leading female roles are played by darker-skinned women. Almost every time, it’s a mixed or light-skinned woman with a dark-skinned man. It even happens in the damn cartoons where they can’t simply use “I just hired the best actress to play the role who just so happened to be mixed” as an excuse. Like, damn. That’s F’d up.
facts! she had so many iconic moments in such a short time. maybe my memory just sucks but i honestly can't remember any huge moments w/ the lightskin aunt viv lmao
What I meant was that African Americans are usually part European because of slavery while in the UK black people are mostly made up of the 2nd gen of African immigrants
I'm sorry you went through that; it's terrible to see. I used to work at a bank and one of my customers was El Salvadorian. He had three daughters and one was darker than the other two. For that reason, he gave her the nickname "Blacky". I thought it was sad because are was really young too.
Luckily I grew up with a loving mom who never made colorist remarks but the rest of my family... my uncles and aunties are colorist af 🤦🏻♀️ It's sad how much self-hatred still exists in the Latino community.
Same... as well. My family is from Dominican Republic. It’s 15 children. I’m the thirteenth child. Me and my youngest are the darkest tone and we are definitely treated definitely. But I noticed my grandparents even favored him more because he’s a male. Like he holds more honor. But moving to the US I was then considered “light skin/ red bone” and treated differently by others because I’m considered to be most preferred by the guys. I lost friends because of that. They would say “oh they only like you because you’re lighter or your hair is long and curly”. I hated it!!! Because my friends were beautiful black women that I absolutely admired and felt I was even on there level of style and grace. Definitely not trying to play or highlight myself as victim. But growing up it definitely developed so much confusion and unwanted attention. I have noticed how colorism has shaped our world and it’s disgusting.
Alicia Stover I know that, but in real life Steve should’ve been with Myra, she love him for he was. She was also pretty. Only a fool would constantly chase after a women, who doesn’t want him. I loved the show, but it gave away the wrong message. We don’t always get our dream girl. Plus in today’s age, if a guy did what Steve did, he would have a restraining order out on him, or in jail.
I've always said that ... hate they never got her back it sucked after that.. I know alot of ppl who stopped watching it as b4 or altogether, after they switched her & I was 1 of them!
Dark skin Aunt Viv gave me Claire Huxtable realness! I love that she was unapologetically herself and had personality for days. She slayed that role! No disrespect to the light skinned Aunt Viv but she was kinda forgettable...almost like a trophy wife....good to look at but not much else. Thank you for making this!
Amen!! Thats the truth! Dark skinned Aunt Viv gave me life!! The lighter one was a lil too submissive for me. The original aunt Viv gave me strong, independent, making sure blacks knew where they came from
I had a dark skinned friend who was like that. She felt pretty because she used to hang out with a light skin girl...the levels of stupidity we've come to.
I agree, Max was a free loader, but she was attractive, smart, funny and can hold her own. Maxine Shaw, attorney at law!! By the way ole girl can get the men....I mean really fine men.... Terrance Howard's character..... Phil Morris, Giancarlo Exposito...and of course Kyle Barker... and a couple of cuties. She wasn't the typical chocolate woman that the entertainment industry try to portray as loud, ghetto and a gold digger. Living Single is my favorite show!!! Erica was the best!
@@myssdoubleu6372 When they aired the Living Single reunion special on TV One, Kim Fields commented that they shared dressing areas in between takes, and she was envious of her body.
On the Rugrats whenever Susie came to play she stole the whole episode and she was always putting Angelica in her place lol. All the babies loved susie
Darshanay Johnson everybody loved Susie and I hated the lack of racial balance on the show (like why couldn’t we get regular cousins and stuff of hers along with everyone else) but her positive presence with no harsh stereotypes was definitely a major plus. It really makes me wonder if they had a black woman on board with the show to keep them in check from doing anything funky with the only black character.
I loved the proud fam but the gross sisters idk if they was ashy or just dark but it wasn’t right and also Dejanay she basically a walking stereotype .
Orange Sun You literally named a few characters, that’s called an exception, like I said the majority of the time those characters are darker and Laura’s friend was hardly ghetto. That’s a stretch.
I always felt like the Proud Family's colorism was *extremely* obvious. Even though I loved that show. It was one of the very few if any black cartoons out at the time (kinda like now).
I never thought anyone would be talking about the fact that The Proud Family had pretty much dehumanized the dark skinned girls and had always considered the black girls ghetto and ashy. And I just realized this a few years back.
I believe they were so black that they were blue. I believe their family was from the Caribbean’s but I don’t think they could say that they were so black they were blue so they called them ashy.
@@prihaps I was also in my preteens (eh, I think between the age of 9-11), but never thought of colorism at the age I was. That didn't seem to be noticeable until I was in high school, which is when I made the realization how negativily the dark skinned girls were portrayed. It was very obvious but it didn't click until I was in ninth grade.
The Wayne's brothers went from supporting black women in the late 80's to early 90's to all of the Wayne's bro's and sis messing wit white women and men.
It’s sad that y’all always say this and tisha probably sees this all the time. Y’all gotta remember their not cartoon characters that’s their real faces; so you’re insulting or belittling their real faces and bodies. In my honest opinion though, I think they weighed each other out when it comes to beauty. Both of them equally had their strong factors.
Totally agree with you because, I do not even remember. Light skin aunt Viv . J cole in one of his iconic songs no role models. Only mentioned the dark skinned auntie that says a lot.
Dark skinned Aunt Vivian was the epitome of a strong and beautiful black women. She was classy, educated, sassy, attractive and hilarious. Plus she was immensely talented. The second one was boring. I didn't dislike her but I didn't need her on the show. She added nothing.
On one side white shows are not going to represent black people then you got black shows that hold on to stereotypes for dear life 😑 we can’t even count on ourselves 🤦🏾♀️
The Gina and Pam one is reality to black women. Gina is just the light skin girl everyone adores because she’s lighter, and Pam is just the dark skin girl people normally dislike because, ya know, she’s a darker complexion. Every time Martin would say something about Pam, Gina would sit there and snicker, laugh, or flat out ignore the coloristic comments her bf says about her best friend. 🙄
As a kid I remember really being annoyed by how Martin treated Pam. It was overdone and rubbed me the wrong way. Pam was gorgeous, so it felt like he was just attacking her because she was dark skin.
Same. I loved the show, but I also would get annoyed at HOW MUCH he would dog her. She would bite back so it was mutual, but he often started it and would shut her down. She was very talented and beautiful. I loved her singing voice 👏💕
I feel as though it may have been a mixture of colorism AND the portrayal of sometimes how your man "cracks" on your homegirls. It's realistic in Both instances.
Y’all have to remember Pam’s character is Gina’s best friend who views Martin as not good enough for Gina, rugged, and uncivilized. She looks down on him thinking that her friend could do much better. She may be loud and boisterous but she was at a high end job just like Gina. She displayed the same characteristics as some of the so called “dim witted light skins” they try to portray on television
Commenting before finishing the vid, but isn't it funny that in a lot of these sitcoms the husband and sons are unambiguously Black, but somehow the daughters are mixed?
Commercials & those fake photos in picture frames, too! They'll have black sons & biracial daughters, smh. (For the record, nothing against biracial ppl, but the pictures these companies paint is worth side-eyeing)
That dynamic led the way for our current climate of biracial dominance. Also u see it with this baby mama culture. Black ass dudes picking light and brights to breed with.🤷🏽
What about Moesha? She was smart, had a wholesome family, and she didn’t fit the stereotype of the angry black woman (in my opinion). We can't forget about True Jackson, VP either!
@ you're implying that this review only focuses on the bad shows. Have you not watch it until the end? Plus maybe you should recommend those shows in your own comment so that people can actually check them and we all grow from this? Thanks. Take care.

@@shunai935 I did and don't 100% agree with this, as its not 100% true and seems like they only reach for something thats not really there most of the time. Considering what I said in my comment here, lots of people are bound to see this and the top one for the matter.
In the 90s there was an upside it seems, the 2000s really sunk, apart from maybye everybody hates Chris, True Jackson VP, Bernie Mac, and a few others. Rn i would say things are going in the right direction,
All of this played huge parts in the coming of age transition for dark skin girls. Out of all of the shows Martin & The Proud Family definitely were more painful to watch now being older and being able to pick up on it.
@Scorpio L That's an important distinction. If you notice it, see it as wrong and simply say so, that's great. When you get angry about it, you end up just like them. Then they call that 'self hate'. All these made up terms only add confusion and stir up anger imo
The whole family was named after some type of seasoning. She had brothers and sisters name Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Paprika and even Tabasco. SMH. Don't believe me. Look at season 2 episode 14
Shakur Wright I don’t think the insults was because she was black hell Martin checked EVERYBODY on that show including Gina.......granted she didn’t get it like Pam cause Gina was the girlfriend...... now I do agree Gina was casted as the girlfriend cause she was light skinned but I don’t feel like Pam was insulted cause she was dark skinned girl she was insulted just like everyone else and plus most guys don’t like they girls best friend and most girls don’t like they best friend boyfriend I feel like they wear playing off of that.....it was even said they were supposed to be mimicking Fred Stanford and Aunt Ester hints why he calls her Ester in one episode and the actress that plays Ester guest starred in one episode
J Silva they had one episode when they addressed colorism as well. And after that there wasn’t any issues. But think about who created the show. A Black woman. So of course there would be balance
E M. Unfortunately the actress was and still is not a positive role model for dark skinned black women. It was the character that displayed that part you liked. If they felt there was a probably with the original actress they should have kept the casting for someone that at least looked similar to the original actress. That’s the thing that baffles me with shows that switch actors. They can do so well at casting children version of original actors but fall so far behind when replacing an actor in the same timeframe. I know the industry isn’t that lacking where they can’t find an appropriate actor to not only act the part, but also look it. I also don’t agree with the notion that changing how the character acted was a critical part in making a peaceful working environment for the cast and crew.
Milano Martin I think in real life she was just bitter bc they kicked her off of the show bc she wanted to get paid more. She had asked Will to ask the producers if they could raise her pay since he had a lot more influence. He wouldn’t do it because basically it wasn’t his problem.
The dark skin aunt viv off set behavior is what got her fired u can even look it up nobody on the cast wanted to work with her but I do agree that they should've got another dark skinned women for the part
I love Martin one of my fav shows ..but even As a kid I didn’t like that Martin would go in on Pam that hard and it would make me uncomfortable when he would say she looked like an animal, talked about her hair being fake and her not being able to find a man as a haha to her face because he had a light skin woman. Never sat well with me...like how black men now talk about how ugly we are and how we are this and that because they have a trophy light skin woman.
I was maybe a preteen and it bothered me too. I never liked bullying. But now I realized so many black men truly feel this way due to the conditioning of many generations including Martin’s show.
Moesha was actually a pretty balanced black sitcom. Moesha is the brown/dark-skinned protagonist, who is smart, independent, and highly desirable. Dee (her stepmom) is also an intelligent, talented, desired dark-skinned black woman (with a lighter skinned husband btw). For the first few seasons, she had the big-mouth best friend Kim, who was lighter than her.
What the shame was what they did to Frank character when they decided to let Ray J replace Countess on the show when she left for her spin off and that in turn led to the show demise
My family is colorist. I did not know that word even exist until recently REALLY.... All I knew is that anyone draker was ugly for them😠 I grew up always playing in the sun and my melalin was always popping. But the rest of my family some was light skin and Puerto Rican mix... @@ChieftainHawke if you want to get technical, yes Kelsey was the "Executive producer" for the production company .. but it was Mara Brock Akil who did the screen-writing and tv production for these shows (Moesha, Girlfriends, The Game, or Love is ) They wouldn't have been half as good or relate-able to black folks had she not. You can even find some of Mara's interviews on youtube, were she discusses how these shows came together and how she pitched the idea to Kelsey's company because they had the budget... It's obvious that the original comment was simply highlighting Mara's excellent contributions to black television, so chill the fuck out with the white savior complex.

When we know black people are the real ones behind the Magic
And usually the daughters are light skinned too. I saw a video talking about racism and in this really old cartoon, most of the black girls were light skinned and beautiful because that's what men want and we gotta get married right 🙄 but all the guys were dark, and it seems (you can notice this in MANY aspects of any culture) guys don't need to be attractive (or ever care what women like in a guy), because they don't need women and they'll get one anyway no matter how unattractive they are because they're men and they're entitled. But yeah, no man is going to marry an ugly girl, and if you're dark you're automatically ugly, unfeminine, and overall unattractive. And why not perpetuate this notion by mostly only putting light skin women on TV, and if a dark skinned women is on TV she'll be the friend that (isn't happily single, because that doesn't exist for women) can't get a man and is the butt of every joke
i read a media essay abouthow in black media and art, in black heterosexual relationships. theyre never portrayed with the girl being darking than the guy and honestly it fucked me up
His love interests were usually light skinned. His little brother was light skinned and he was seemed as more attractive and everyone liked him and Chris was darker and nobody liked him
There was colorism. There were episodes where tasha's grandmother called Chris nappy head and told his mom to tell her son stay away from her. Also in the prom episode the teacher hooked him up with girl who was mixed looking.

I'm glad you mentioned "Coming to America". That's actually the point in my life that I stopped and thought, "Okay, but why couldn't the dark-skinned girl have played Lisa? Isn't she just as beautiful and talented." And it hurt because I saw myself in her (skin-tone wise) and realised that that's the picture that society has painted of me and girls like me
@@deelovely5604 Nowhere in my statement does it say light-skinned women are not, or can not be, beautiful. What I'm speaking against is the notion that *only* light-skinned women are beautiful. If that's your view, we can respectfully agree to disagree and move on.
A great video. The Afro Latina/black girl comparison in Proud Family is very important because it shows up with Nicki Vs Cardi B. Cardi gets a pass for everything while Nicki gets dragged. Even with the rise of newer ‘darker’ girls in comparison to Cardi’s Spanish roots. Megan thee stallion, who writes her raps; is hustling to make it in the industry while Cardi who doesn’t write any raps gets a Grammy over men who are more talented than her.
fitchgirl02 for years Nicki Minaj is praised and she’s falling off because she is now writing her own music but before she has definitely was getting consultants. But because she feels threatened by other women being rappers it turned into a sudden competition that’s why Nicki Minaj gets dragged cause she chose to bully everyone out of the music industry
Considering that Pam was beautiful, had a great paying job, lived alone, and was rightly independent I didn't see any problem with her and Martin roasting eachother. She always had a comeback for everything he threw at her.
It was a love/hate relationship so it was right that they came at each other. But they have showed a few times that they always had love and respect for one and another, Pam was matching Gina so she was very well balanced
And what about Penny's baby twin siblings? BB, the boy, was darkskinned with an afro. While his twin sister, CC, was lightskinned with lighter colored straight hair.
Because we're living in a society structured with systemic racism that has been implemented carefully over CENTURIES. Its impossible to ignore the problems around us and pretend they don't exist. But we can love all people and fight racism at the same time. We can do both!
And made it seem like no one wanted Nikki because she big, black, and loud until the final season when she was finally given a love interest that wanted her fr
@@MultiAbc678 This. Even as a child watching the show it made e cringe how they had her character constantly chasing after that professor and the countless ways he would shut her down

Hold on. I disagree with Living Single! Maxine's character was an intelligent attorney and the only friend who maintained her own residence. Her "aggression" toward men was more of her knowing what she wanted and not letting men or society dictate how she was supposed to behave as a woman. She also often offered sound advice to her friends. She was always a supportive person (remember when Sinclair quit her job as Khadijah's secretary, and Maxine filled in, or when she helped Khadijah, Regine & Sinclair win the $1500 settlement in the Full Court Press episode). Regine's character was very classy and she brought much cultural education to her household (knowledge of French cuisine & the language, knowledge of high fashion, knowing how to dress for any occasion without showing too much skin, knowing how to set a dinner table and which side the silverware goes on). She definitely brought some class and knowledge to her roommate's lives, similar to what Kyle brought to Overton's world. Yvette Lee Bowser really did a lovely job of depicting Blacks in a positive light and taking us outside of stereotypes🙌🏾
Agreed!! All the women were greatly represented on that show. It was especially important to see that two plus-size Black woman lead characters (Queen Latifah and Kim Coles) were also very desirable and successful. Khadijah owned her own magazine and could pull any man she wanted to, and Synclaire, though she eventually ended up with Overton (John Henton) was also desired and had a fledgling acting career! There aren't many, if any, shows which portray that today.
For all the reasons you stated it really shows the stereotypes. Max was the lawyer but also hyper sexual, strong, etc. All the light skinned characters were the more desired ones, more feminine ones...
Eloho, notice that you mentioned Living Single and Girlfriends. They both centered on 4 black women of different hues. I loved both shows. Family Matters was genuinely lovable. Good observations.
@@lilhypnotique I know; they didn't even have the respect for the audience that Fresh Prince did (making fourth-wall jokes about it) and just tried to act as if nothing had changed.
Maxine was a successful attorney, top of her class in college, and one every court case. She got just as many dates as Regine. I just had to mention that. In fact, Living Single managed to make all the characters were more complex than what they were on paper.
Megan Reynolds Thank you for saying this. I’ve seen various videos around a lot of the same shows mentioned here and this is the FIRST time anyone has ever mentioned Living Single and singled out Max. Max was ALWAYS my favorite. She was goals for me as a young black girl
@@YellowRanger_ Thanks. Max was good fashion inspo, she was killing those suits and monochromatic looks. I also don't think Max was a mooch even though she in fact mooched, lol. She was originally one of their roomates but Max and Regine fought like cats and dogs. That's when Max moved out, Sinclair moved in, and Max became their neighbor. So whatever dynamic they had before never went away.
As a Latina it makes me emotional, as I can really relate to all this colorism stuff, and it's hard to open our eyes to just how much tv and films made us hate ourselves just bc of our skin or hair or eye color :(( just watch any telenovela blond/hueritos Latinos are always the protagonists and the dark skinned ones/cholitos/ are always the servers or secondary characters SMH...
Remember when Celia premiered news outlets made it such a big deal that that for the first time black characters were the protagonist in a non-slave themed story. Don't get me wrong I do thinks it was about time, but they made it seem like, "look how far we've come along". Which to me sounded kinda condescending. Also, in Latin culture its not just if you have African features but also if your featured lean more towards indigenous. Roma for example had a huge controversy because of the Lead's features. Some mexican actors were upset that that was how mexicans would be represented. There was also "Maria Isabel" telenovela in the 90's where the protagonist was a woman from an indigenous decent. But she was played by Adela Noriega who doesn't have indigenous features. But they were able to get a full assemble of good actors with said features to play the indigenous people (Huicholes). You know, the side characters. 🙄

I heard the reason they got rid of her cause she didn’t get along with the cast or something like that. She was a good actor but not that good of a person.
She has said herself that at the time she didn’t like/get along with Will or any of the cast. The cast said she was very problematic when it came to filming the show. When they had a reunion no one hit her up when everyone asked why multiple cast members said she’s just not a nice person.

I have to disagree about the Cosby show only because I feel like Vanessa's character wasn't the best. What I mean is in a lot of the episodes during Vanessa's teenage years she rebelled and we never saw that type of rebellious behavior from Denise and Sandra. Also it seems like Vanessa was over shadowed by Denise. No one really noticed or talked about Vanessa. I know Rudy was dark skinned too but her plug was she was the cute, baby of the family. Vanessa was just kind of there taking up space.
Now that was rare-to pair two darker-skinned Black actors together in the 90s. Max and Kyle were the ULTIMATE power couple! In television and movies, that is extremely rare to see today. Even in Blackish, it's the same trope--light-skinned Black woman, darker-skinned Black man....
Coming to America always broke my heart because I thought Patrice was way more beautiful than Lisa and they portray Patrice as a gold-digging female and it really pissed me off
The funny thing about Patrice is that she actually liked Akeem first when she first met him when she thought he was just a college student working in the restaurant.
Oh I'm with you! I have ALWAYS been attracted to dark skinned women, and YES!!! Patrice was absolutely gorgeous!!!! And in my opinion? Better looking than her sister (no shade). Just my opinion. And so was Aunt Vivian (the original actress) what a Beauty!!!! The second actress who played Aunt Vivian was a pretty lady too, but she just wasn't STRIKINGLY gorgeous!!!!
I did feel bad for her. Especially when the Dad kinda threw it in her face that the prince wanted her sister and not her. That was so mean. That's why I have only probably watched it twice and half assed the second time.
Having one black character doesn't make something a black cartoon or sitcom. There was no light counterpart to Susie on Rugrats. Also, she gets way less airtime than all the other (white) characters!
Whitley Sasha well to be fair Suzue was introduced the same time as Dill was, 10 years after the show started. And I didn’t say it was a black show. It was just nice to have some black representation on a show with all white characters.
Subconsciously we were taught to hate our dark skin. It took me years to be comfortable in my skin and now I see alot of the reasons why. I'm glad I love who I am
@@Just4Meek I am mixed, & I remember wishing I wasn't bcuz I was so different. Everybody wants to be something else. Especially as kids. This "colorism" shit is just that. BULLSHIT! Just be happy w who you are.
ESTHER if you’re mixed with black then you’re considered part black. the show is trying to say that black comes in all different shades which is why they put a white passing women in the show.
Back in my childhood, I'd often watch the Cosby Show. I always wondered how two mahogany-skinned parents could have daughters who were as white as a ghost! :|
To be fair, a brown-skinned, or darker-skinned, Black man and woman can produce a child(ren) on the spectrum of color, so in that respect, I think it was an accurate representation.
My parents are not light skin but my sister is because my grandmother is black & white (actually can pass for white). I assumed it was the same for the Cosby Show.
@THEwhimsical1 I wish people would stop saying full black🙄Having two black parents doesn’t mean u are more black than another(I’m not talking about people with one black parent) It’s just really stupid because u can’t tell somebody’s ancestry from looking at them....
I was an adult when that show came on and I saw the colorism right away. Even though I was grown, I would have gladly still watched a cartoon, especially about a black family, but that dynamic made me stop watching it after the first few episodes.
@The Mel Experience - I love Maxine as well. Honestly, I never really thought of Living Single as showing colorism. The two darkest characters (Max and Kyle) were also the most educated and successful of the group. I never saw Regine as someone to envy or like she was put on a pedestal. She was self-centered, shallow, and needy. I think Synclaire was the lightest one, and she was portrayed as naive and childlike, but also very loving. And she wasn't portrayed as the object of every man's desire, just her Obie. I love that Synclaire and Overton had a beautiful, healthy relationship without any of the baggage and drama often placed on black couple characters. I don't know, I guess I just didn't feel like any of them fit any particular "color" stereotype. As you can tell, Living Single is one of my favorite shows. Watched it during my college days and still watch it today when I can.
You forgot “ A Different World”!!! Good show, but rife with colorism! They went from one “most desired light skinned character” to yet another!!! Denise to Whitley anyone???
I'm glad u made this cuz it needed to be made. None of us noticed as children but when I rewatch these old shows I be side eyeing cuz they really threw colorism in our faces as kids.
They knew we wouldn't understand as kids so that's why they would try to shove lots of colorism...

But I noticed my grandparents even favored him more because he’s a male. Like he holds more honor. But moving to the US I was then considered “light skin/ red bone” and treated differently by others because I’m considered to be most preferred by the guys. I lost friends because of that. Very painful. But honestly, I've always loved Pam more. She was smart and sassy. Loved her more than Martin.

@Lacey Kean Isn't it crazy that you don't really notice until someone points out and makes it an issue and something to be angry about?
Candor spot it is absolutely something to be angry about tho, the only thing that we didn’t realize is how frequent this narrative was pushed.
@Scorpio L That's an important distinction. If you notice it, see it as wrong and simply say so, that's great. When you get angry about it, you end up just like them. Then they call that 'self hate'. All these made up terms only add confusion and stir up anger imo

As a kid watching "Martin" I always hated the way he treated Pam. So disrespectful.
To be fair Pam would roast his ass back too. It’s not like the other sitcoms where they just take it
I never understood why he would disrespect a woman and find it funny. It was never that funny.
They talked about EACH OTHER it wasn’t just him talking about her
Every lead male in a sitcom usually shit talks to the best friend tho. Shii it’s like that in real life 😂
Shakur Wright I don’t think the insults was because she was black hell Martin checked EVERYBODY on that show including Gina.......granted she didn’t get it like Pam cause Gina was the girlfriend...... now I do agree Gina was casted as the girlfriend cause she was light skinned but I don’t feel like Pam was insulted cause she was dark skinned girl she was insulted just like everyone else and plus most guys don’t like they girls best friend and most girls don’t like they best friend boyfriend I feel like they wear playing off of that.....it was even said they were supposed to be mimicking Fred Stanford and Aunt Ester hints why he calls her Ester in one episode and the actress that plays Ester guest starred in one episode

And that's why I loved girlfriend
Pam was gorgeous, nice body, and beautiful especially over Tisha but Martin set it up like that because he is a real colorist!
Dark skinned Aunt Viv was positive representation for dark skinned women. Wish she could have stayed on the show.
I do know Will didn’t like her.
Milano Martin I think in real life she was just bitter bc they kicked her off of the show bc she wanted to get paid more. She had asked Will to ask the producers if they could raise her pay since he had a lot more influence. He wouldn’t do it because basically it wasn’t his problem.
Light skin aunt viv was boring asf,and she looked a couple years older than the dark skin aunt viv.
She is older.
Dark skin Aunt Viv had a beautiful body, she was a nice tall glass of water.

Moesha was more on body shaming

Fun fact: the producer of Moesha also produced Girlfriends and The Game! shout out to black excellence. She highlighted black people in a way that many wasn’t during the time!
Mara Akil
Girlfriends and The Game were produced by a white man. Kelsey Grammer

Most shows I noticed had a light skin mom and dark skin husband which really bugged me for a whole but hey TV right
And usually the daughters are light skinned too.

Megan thee stallion, who writes her raps; is hustling to make it in the industry while Cardi who doesn’t write any raps gets a Grammy over men who are more talented than her.
fitchgirl02 the city girls are doing well
fitchgirl02 for years Nicki Minaj is praised and she’s falling off because she is now writing her own music but before she has definitely was getting consultants. But because she feels threatened by other women being rappers it turned into a sudden competition that’s why Nicki Minaj gets dragged cause she chose to bully everyone out of the music industry
fitchgirl02 girl you know cardi be getting dragged
But she does write her own music
...only that Cardi B isn't afro Latina.
Seriously disgusting!
That helps with the narrative, dark skin sons and light skin daughters.

@Lena 95 Penny was a mix of her mom and her dad tho
why can't people just love all colors, it isn't hard😭 it's actually easier to be loving than to be hateful believe it or not
It's a strategy implanted thousands of years ago, and reinforced a few centuries past, so it's going to be a hard habit to break.
it is!
Because we're living in a society structured with systemic racism that has been implemented carefully over CENTURIES.
Its impossible to ignore the problems around us and pretend they don't exist.

The Parkers is another show that perpetrated a lot of dark skin female stereotypes.
And made it seem like no one wanted Nikki because she big, black, and loud until the final season when she was finally given a love interest that wanted her fr

MariMar for example
Or the villains

Subconsciously we were taught to hate our dark skin. It took me years to be comfortable in my skin and now I see alot of the reasons why. I'm glad I love who I am
@Jamil Boykin why are non black ppl supposed to not like us? Lol
Same... I remember wishing I was mixed or even white all the way up until I was 14 years old.
@@Just4Meek I am mixed, & I remember wishing I wasn't bcuz I was so different. Everybody wants to be something else. Especially as kids. This "colorism" shit is just that. BULLSHIT! Just be happy w who you are.
New shows like Ravens Home and Family Reunion bash these colorist stereotypes successfully.
jordanisanerd isn’t family reunion with a mixed girl. Did it change.
They have a light skin girl who looks white playing the daughter
ESTHER they chose Jade to say the black comes in all different shades.
ESTHER if you’re mixed with black then you’re considered part black. the show is trying to say that black comes in all different shades which is why they put a white passing women in the show.
ESTHER playing the role of dark skin ?
Love you my African Queen!
Sundus Aden ily22222💓
I noticed the colorism in Coming to America from a young age....although I didn’t know what that was.
Teacher Inspiration Station so did I.
Me too wow
Yep the prince was definitely COMING TO AMERICA
Eloho, why you uploading at 1:30 am? Messing up my sleeping schedule 🤣😭
Liliers sss for my insomniacs ✨🧠
YEOOw facts lmao
Deadass lmao!!!
I’m an hour late but it’s 2:45am in Detroit
I live in Sweden so the timing is great for me! 😂
A dark skin black couple can and do create white(not albino ) kids. We're the only race who's capable of doing that.
@THEwhimsical1 :exactly!
@THEwhimsical1 I wish people would stop saying full black🙄Having two black parents doesn’t mean u are more black than another(I’m not talking about people with one black parent) It’s just really stupid because u can’t tell somebody’s ancestry from looking at them....
Wow I just realized how messed up the proud family was.
💔😫
I was an adult when that show came on and I saw the colorism right away. Even though I was grown, I would have gladly still watched a cartoon, especially about a black family, but that dynamic made me stop watching it after the first few episodes.
It should be banned. It's disgusting and toxic to darkskinned children!
@@AG-fg1uk if you teach your kids to watch it with the colorism in mind. They should be fine
But but I love Maxine Shaw attorney at Law 🤣🤣
The Mel Experience
🤣 my favorite character on the show
YES!😂😊
She Was The Most Educated Also
Kyle too
@The Mel Experience - I love Maxine as well.
The original aunt Viv was the best. In family matters Harriet was the sassy one and Rachel was kind of a mess.
Aunt Rachel WAS messy, lol.
That messed up the whole show tbh.
You forgot “ A Different World”!!!
Good show, but rife with colorism! They went from one “most desired light skinned character” to yet another!!! Denise to Whitley anyone???
Yes! I saw that as well!
yesss
And Whitley wasn't even all that. There were other pretty women that could have gotten that spot like Kim, or Freddie, jaleesa...
Living Single was WAY better than Friends!😂
Ivy Girl almost anything is better than friends
Sorry but friends is just as good 💕💕💯
jennifer adams oh well it is all about personal preference I didn’t mean to hurt you if i did
I love both of them
Ivy girl waaaaayyyyy better!!!!!!!
