    Thank you, thank you, thank you! I was ordered to go strict AIP by my doctor last week. I have Hashis etc. I'm so ill, I am 70% of the day in bed or sitting. Still, when I saw the exclusion list I actually cried as food was my last 'joy' (and I'm Jamaican and spicy food is life) I just needed to hear someone say yeah it's tough but you gotta do it. The tips are brilliant, thank you for helping me get over this mentally!🌷👍🏿

    I also have Hashimotos and I totally feel for you when you say "Apparantly, I can't eat that either for the rest of my life!" I have been working on my diet for that last 18 months and it seems to be changing all the time. I've tried so many different diets. It's so frustrating and no one in my family understands. Sometimes it's heartbreaking. Thank you for sharing.

      Many thanks, been searching for "what is the definition of autoimmune disease?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Ponogan Eminent Precedence - (do a search on google ) ? It is a good exclusive guide for discovering how to fight the root cause of autoimmune diseases without the normal expense. Ive heard some super things about it and my mate got cool success with it. +ruclips.net/channel/UCAN1f7vxatYHdPbButrdFkg

    I am new to AIP, 2.5 weeks now and went cold turkey. Honestly, I have not had any issue with this diet, rather enjoy it and already feeling so much better! Your video was so informative with regard to reintroduction of foods, I hope in the future to get eggs back, they just make me so sick :( I have celiacs, IBS, psoriatic arthritis, migraines and fibromyalgia and many attacks of diverticulitis which led to colon surgery and seem to have gained 80 lbs over the last year despite eating well (possible Thyroid issue, lab test fluctuate). Meds for the past 20 years have failed to help so my Rheumatologist suggested AIP and took me off all meds. MIND BLOWN!! I can't believe food can be medicine, have not felt this good in years. My motivation is less pain, swelling and I have lost 15 lbs. in 2 weeks. I start every morning off with a smoothie made of 1 small banana, 1/2 avocado, 1/2 cup of organic pumpkin puree, tsp honey, sprinkle of cinnamon, 1 cup of organic unsweetened coconut milk, 2 scoops of vital protein collagen powder and ice in a blender. It fills me for hours and gives me so much energy to get through my day. Every night I take a probiotic and vitamin D as well. Also, the shelf idea is great, I actually have a huge crisper drawer for myself and a freezer bin too. My family knows to stay out :) Although, my kids have jumped in and modified their diets as well so it makes meal planning so much easier. I love your positivity and how you break things down, just makes sense.

      That is so great that you enjoy the diet and especially that you feel better on it. Food is so powerful! I read a quote recently that said "food can either be the gentlest medicine or the slowest poison" and it is so true. That is great that your family is on board to, it definitely makes it eaiser. Your smoothie sounds delicious and so filling!
      Thank you for your kind words. I wish you much healing and energy.

    Thanks for sharing this. I've been on (and off) the AIP diet for a year and a half now. It is hard! It's nice to hear someone else say it. :) For me, the hardest part is the reintroduction. I feel great and then try to reintroduce too many things at once and then don't know what I've reacted too. It was really helpful to be reminded that it is a slow process and that I might be able to reintroduce more when my body heals more.

    I'm only five minutes in so maybe you'll cover this. Even if you ate enough to be full through an outing: bring your own snacks. You need to show these snacks to your peers so they will not push foods (mainly grains) on you because they don't see you eating. They are just trying to be helpful, but they may not understand what exclusion really means for you.

Thank you 🙏🏼 I’m really new to this, found out not too long ago I have Hashimotos and have been struggling with stomach issues and acid reflux for quite awhile. I’d been noticing my thyroid gets irritated if I have a lot of bread or sugar, as in sweets, and my face is polka dotted all over. Hence my being desperate to find solutions. Thanks again! Hello, I have Microscopic Polyangiitis which is a form of vasculitis and damages my kidneys . I have done AIP like you for nearly one year and did six month eve ray strict. I have no reaction to re introduced foods except I have an ANCA neutrophil level in my blood which changes so I have to wait three months to find out . With detective work I now realise that introduction of tomato and potato sent it from 63 to over 100. So I have now gone back to the first original strict diet and then I may do as you said just add eggs first as cooking is a real bind. Unfortunately now I am quite sick again as the blood has been bad the last 2 tests so hoping now I've listened to you to re start again and stay for a while then re introduce one thing after each blood test
    Thank you for all your information , made me feel a bit more like hanging in there and doing it again 😊

    It's so lovely to see people making videos and trying to help others with this diet because it really is a struggle in the beginning. Some of the things that I have realized while starting this diet is that I had to have a blender and a food processor. Without those things it's just not possible to make a lot of the recipes on this diet. Plus with a really good blender you can make smoothies and add collagen or compliant protein, mine is from Amy Myers. I also really agree with what you say about keeping it simple because I was beginning to get overwhelmed with all the recipes on the Facebook group that I was seeing, and I had to just strip back and go back to seasoned meat and vegetables. Do be aware however that the USDA suggest that at least for my body size that I only eat about a 3-ounce portion of meat a day, and while I find it really impossible to stick to such a small amount I do really try to make my meat seafood or fish, because I was finding that I was eating far too much beef, chicken and pork. Since I never cook a whole chicken because it's just me I have taken to buying my bone broth in the little glass jars at Whole Foods, the Epic chicken one is compliant, and then I bought some Vital Proteins bone broth collagen. I applaud you for making your own bone broth and making it work but that's one thing, along with eating offal, but I just haven't been able to work in. I also really recommend that people go ahead and pick up a few cookbooks from the library that are AIP compliant, or go ahead and buy some download packs or books off of the online source of your choice. Once you realize how much you can eat on this diet it becomes less overwhelming. You'll realize that you can have things like banana bread and dinner rolls, you just make them with strange things like green plantains!

    • @AThousandWords
      @AThousandWords  6 лет назад +2

      I'd take the USDA recommendations with a grain of salt if they are preaching against fats. My eyes were opened by reading The Cholesterol Myth (written by doctors).
      In one of our local stores you can buy chicken frames (basically the bones with very little meat left on them) in the pet food section, they are safe for making bone broth. Maybe you could ask for bones at your butcher? I also haven't been able to eat offal except chicken liver pate that I make myself when I can find the chicken livers (my supermarket doesn't always have them).

    Thanks for this. I have had Hashimotos misdiagnosed as simple hypothyroidism for 20 years and now am getting biopsied for pregnancy induced psoriasis. I am phasing out dairy next week, followed by eggs, nuts and grains. Phasing in more fish and green veggies. It feels so overwhelming but the benefit now outweighs the work.

    Hi Jen, this was a really interesting vlog. Not heard of AIP before. I can sympathise with you 100%, I am a coeliac and it took a number of years of illness before I got a diagnosis. Now my eldest daughter has also developed it. My youngest has a severe tree nut allergy and our eldest son is a type 1 diabetic! we're useless 😉 the shelf in the fridge is an excellent idea when you have a family. Good luck with the AIP, sounds like you have done a lot of research I will be checking out the site you've recommended as it's always useful to read up on allergy tips. Thx D xxx

      @AThousandWords  8 лет назад

      +Neiceynoo I'm sorry you are coeliac, that is rough. There are so many food allergies and intolerances nowadays, I'm sure it's from the pesticides and things that they use.

    • @neiceynoo7196
      @neiceynoo7196 8 лет назад +2

      +A Thousand Words Yes Jen I am sure you're absolutely right. Seems to be more gluten free stuff available now so that's good. I feel guilty passing it on to my daughter, kids have an increased risk of being a coeliac if their parents are. She was diagnosed when she was only 10. she's 15 now. It's a shame when she goes to parties or trips out with friends etc as she usually has to take her own food. I was really pleased your chocolate cupcakes turned out so well with GF flour as we can make a batch for everyone and she doesn't feel as different if you know what I mean D xxx

    Good tip to start incrementally; I just cold turkey'd it and it went into shock, was up for three days, hard for me to begin eating unfamiliar stuff after a purge and starve cycle for sure. A gradual process would have done me well.
    I also appreciate the mention of variety versus eating the same thing repeatedly. Because I grew up with about 10 dishes repeated over and over in a week, not much variety, and I feel more reassured by repitition than diversity. The idea of trying all the new stuff is fear inducing for me.
    I started with chicken stock and liver and am slowly starting with some protiens, some AIP soup. I feel awake like never before and energized like I got hit by lightening. Of course the pain levels in my joints and muscles is still there, but mentally, I feel fitter already after three days.

  • @mollysmith6055

    Jen, have you considered creating an e-book for AIP recipes? Obvs not the same target audience as desserts but a niche that is not filled! Can you believe my family has all kinds of AIP-spectrum issues and one relative even has a combination of BOTH Hashimoto's and Graves?! Talk about hard to navigate both diet and meds! As for me, I feel best without gluten and dairy but that is so hard to stick to if you are not diet- and physician-motivated. It has been helpful and motivating to watch your videos and see how you have struggled and triumphed at times in this AIP journey. PS--I know what is available in NZ is different to the USA but have you ever tried a product that is similar to what we have " Bragg Nutritional Yeast Seasoning"---it is said to mimic the taste of cheese. The ingredients are inactive dry yeast, niacin, pyridoxine HCI (B6), Riboflavin (B2), Thiamin HCI (B1), Folic Acid and Vitamin B12. The container says "This product contains no salt, sugar, no egg, milk, gluten, wheat corn, no starch, soy, animal derivatives, no artificial colors & preservativesk, no Candida albicans yeast or brewery by-products as in brewer's yeast." Look here (someone sending you something from the US could ostensibly include a container of this if you cannot get it locally.....) bragg.com/products/bragg-premium-nutritional-yeast-seasoning-salt-free.html

    • @AThousandWords
      @AThousandWords  8 лет назад

      +Molly Spradley I haven't considered making a recipe book mainly because I really don't do a lot of different recipes, I just keep it really simple as I can't be bothered. Because the food is so limited and repetetive I just eat for fuel, you know? And while there are tons of recipes available online I don't really do a lot because at the end of the day it's the same ingredients so no matter how you prepare them they pretty much taste the same.
      Oh. My. Word. How is it even possible to have Hashimoto's and Graves at the same time? That is so awful!!
      I have tried nutritional yeast before, not mad about the flavour and now I know that I react badly to yeast so I'm wary of trying it again. I would try it if I really liked the flavour but I don't really, and besides I moved away from the area where the store was where I could buy it.

    sometimes sauces (esp. in fancy restaurants) are thickened with egg yolks, so it could be good to know that you can handle egg yolks if it means it opens up savory sauces as a possibility. just a thought as to why the step by step makes sense.

    • @AThousandWords
      @AThousandWords  6 лет назад +1

      I find they are more frequently thickened with maize or wheat flour, so I tend to avoid sauces in restaurants.

      true. i guess i'm thinking of one sauce in particular, hollandaise, which i LOVE and at least here in the US bay area if you're at a decent restaurant, they will make it the traditional way, ie. egg yolks, vinegar, butter, herbs, and won't muck it up with other stuff.

    can you please elaborate on the idea when you say “if your body reacts to one food just give it more time and try again” does that mean that you keep eating whatever food your body didnt react to and just keep away from those that your body did further more and then try again? or you mean eliminate from the beginning everything and start all over regardless if your body tolerated it or not (not sure if im making any sense)

Perhaps my medications dont alove me to do this, I thought every time when I failed. But I have MG almost 13 years and I fed up with medications. My bones have been getting weaker. I have osteolysis because of cortisone. I want to ask you, when I cut daily down, will my bones be getting weaker? Will supplement of calsium be enough for my bones? I switched everything over night. If you have any kind of self control you’ll be ok. If you can’t control yourself, don’t try this diet or “phase in” but I don’t see that working like planned. Have to be committed to things if you want them to work.

    Very practical tips my dear. You are radiating health. I start AIP properly on Monday. I loved the point about your shelf. Coz if you're anything like me, when I'm hungry I'm angry! 😆 But thankfully I live in my own. And the first 2 things I'll be re-introducing are tomatoes and Almond-butter. 😍 But after decades long Candida and leaky-gut and inflammation in my left knee now, I'd be very surprised if I'm able to reintroduce anything within a year. But I surely am going to give this a go 100%, so thanks ever so much for sharing.

    I am doing AIP, I just commented on one of the other vids too lol! In the Hashimotos Diet/Protocol book that I read it says that I need to have grass-fed and hormone free meats, do you do that or find that to be true? Hormone free makes sense and is a little easier but grass-fed is harder to find and way more expensive! Also it says that coconut flour is fine, do you use that? I can't figure out if onion counts as a nightshade vegetable or not so I went ahead and kept eating them. And I was wondering about mustard (is it out because its made of a ground seed and seeds are out or did you find that mustard was ok?) lol sorry for all the questions. Thank you so much for doing these videos!

    • @AThousandWords
      @AThousandWords  7 лет назад +1

      I just buy meat from the supermarket, it is what my budget allows plus I wouldn't even know where to get "grass-fed" meat. I think the beef here in NZ is grass fed and hormone free as standard anyway.
      I do use coconut flour. Onions are fine, in fact they are really good for you - and they aren't nighshades - so you're good to go there! Mustard is a seed so technically it is out, but I've had no problem reintroducing it - it could be one of your earliest reintroductions.

People don't talk about that part of it. I LOVE food. I am lucky enough to have reintroduced coffee and nuts and mustard with success, but I want lasagnia.

    Hi, I have an autoimmune disease called Myasthenia Gracie and am thinking of starting the AIP. I was just wondering when you start reintroducing foods are there restrictions on what foods you should introduce? For example would normal potatoes or gluten free breads be allowed?

    • @AThousandWords
      @AThousandWords  7 лет назад +1

      I'd start with foods you suspect are safe, and try those. I would avoid gluten. As for what's "allowed", it's your body that will allow it or not, and that varies from person to person. You can find more information if you Google "AIP food reintroduction", there are sites with tips and help, such as this one: www.thepaleomom.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Reintroducing-Foods.pdf

      No, nothing processed. Gluten free bread / pasta is usually made of corn or potato starch, both of which are not part of AIP, plus there are usually additives that you'll want to avoid. It's very basic clean eating to start with, I'm afraid.

      Following your comment, I've just watched your video on the Medical Medium protocol and the success you're enjoying on it. Just out of curiosity, do you think the MM protocol on its own, without AIP, would have been enough to deal with your gut issues? I haven't looked into MM properly (tbh I'm a little scared to given how much faith I've placed in AIP and the dream that I can one day eat eggs again), but it seems like you're allowed much much more sugar than AIP advises, and advised against "excessive" fat and protein intake. In your experience, would it have been counterproductive to attempt both (MM and AIP) at once?@@AThousandWords

    I wonder what is in the cheese that is making u react ? I love cheese i have tried goat and feta and I seem to b good with those in moderation of course. I was just wondering have u tried a few different cheeses ? Although it sounds like the reaction you had was really bad. It is probably not worth it. I get the worse blinder of a headache ever exactly 48 hours later after I have had cheese ( cheddar block stuff from supermarket you know the sort I mean) even if only a little on a pizza. Good luck with reintroducing of different foods. Love your videos. I am sure this is going to be very helpful to people with AP.

    A moment of silence for your loss of cheese...that stinks! I have thought about doing this but it seems very difficult. I am hypothyroid and struggle with energy issues. Need to work up the courage. In an Italian family giving up gluten is difficult.

    • @AThousandWords
      @AThousandWords  8 лет назад

      +Sarah D'Atri Thanks, it certainly deserves the moment of silence. I adore cheese so I'm very very sad about it.
      Are you just hypothyroid or do you have Hashimoto's? If it's not Hashi's then I wouldn't think there was a need to do full AIP. But either way cutting out gluten would prob help, I know it's difficult if you love pasta but if you break form it for a while and then try the rice pastas available (the break ensures there is no direct taste comparison because they don't taste the same) then you could still enjoy your favourite pasta dishes.

      I mean... I think it’s good advice that you don’t have to give up everything at once. For example my blood results came back that I wasn’t coeliac or allergic to wheat. And whilst I don’t take what doctors say as gold-plated, I thought why not cut out dairy first, which is very very very common. So I cut out dairy and not wheat as it’s just such a likely scenario - worked a treat for me (turns out I’m very standard and common ha ha). Much better energy, lost weight for no reason... my point is it’s good advice not to transition dramatically and try the obvious stuff first.
