    Modifying a paleo diet for autoimmune disease requires more than just eliminating immune stimulating and gut irritating foods. A focus on nutrition is just as important. This presentation by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne explains: what nutrients are important, what foods have them, and how to construct your plate to get what your body needs. Filmed live at Paleo f(x) Austin.

    I just want to add that many of these foods are an acquired taste. If you have enough will power to force yourself to try new foods (even if it's just a few bites to start off with), you will eventually get used to it. Some foods take longer to get used to than others (and it's true that there are some foods you may never like). You also have to try them with a positive mind set. If every time you try it you dwell on how disgusting it is, you are making it hard for your taste buds to adjust.

    I was diagnosed with Hashimoto around 12 years ago. When I started to research how to help myself and I realized what I can't eat on AIP I thought it's impossible for me to stick to it. It was 7 years ago. Since this time, I was a few times on ketogenic diet, low carb, even sirt diet but I couldn't stick to it for longer than few months. All the time I was feeling so bad with the fact I can't eat junk food and sweets but since end of 2021 my Hashimoto symptoms got worse and I knew I must do something. I started AIP a month ago. It changed my life completely! From binge eating and ordering food almost everyday to intuitive eating, no cravings for sweets and savoury snacks, no hunger all the time, no bloating. I started to make my own water kefir and fermented veggies. If you're struggling remember to never give up if it's about your health. It takes time, research, many tries but the ones who are searching will finally find their best way ❤️❤️

      @@gabrielamailow8526 hello! I'm still on AIP but I added potatoes, tomato and eggs already as these have been the things I missed the most. I must admit I have had 2 weeks when I didn't stick to the diet and ordered takeaways, all the gastric symptoms, sweet/junk cravings and a lack of energy came back. So I sticked back to the diet, I only eat something else when I'm going out with friends from time to time. I still drink my water kefir daily and I'm amazed! I used to catch a cold/flu once a month-two months. Since I drink the water kefir I was ill once, for not even one day ( almost half a year since I drink it daily). I think it all changed into my new lifestyle, not just a temporary diet :)

    (14:38) "It's really, really important that we don't see food as a source of stress..."
    Boom. It hits me. Food to me is the thing you have to do that you wish you didn't because it seemed to always make you feel awful, and when there are too many foods that you react to to be able to have good days or to be able to spot patterns or notice that a reaction is a reaction and not just something endemic to your body, or when it has happened since you were little - you're a frog in a kettle on a stove of reactivity - then holy moly you can have considerable trouble connecting the dots.
    Even now that I know better, my body cringes when I think oh, it's time to eat something, and I feel a 'god no' kick in the gut. Essentially, my body programmed a psychological hibernation mode into me, where I think that sleep is good and all aspects of being awake, including eating, are bad. This is going to be a life changer. When my subconscious body, catches up to my new insight and realizes the contents of my stomach are no longer toxic t me, will it be happy, I think.

    8-10 servings a day of plant material? That is not even economically possible for the majority of people, especially if you have a CSA. Maybe if you had a garden but come on, that is just unreasonable. I think a smarter strategy would be to have 4-6 a day of fermented, cooked, and raw plant material a day; fermented foods also boost gut microbes that in turn make nutrients for you out of plant fiber, so it's like a net gain nutritionally, plus they're more nutrient-dense from being fermented. I can't imagine indigenous populations eating even 8-10 servings a day, let alone 16-20. I don't think I could even fit that much in my belly physically. It becomes a task past 2-3 at a meal to eat that much plant matter. Focusing on organ meats, broth, fermented veggies, leafy greens, roots and tubers, and seafood is the takeaway from this talk for autoimmune sufferers, and just in general too actually.

      Being thin doesn't always equal healthy. One of the diseases she has is a thyroid disease, and hers was pretty advanced. It is extraordinarily hard to lose weight and keep weight off when you have a thyroid disease. So, even when people with those disease get much better, they may always find getting thin and staying thin impossible. Likely, this is her new normal, which is about 120 pounds lighter than what she was. No one who understands science claims that changing diet cures these diseases, but it can put it in or mostly in remission.

    • @BaLayEunMi
      @BaLayEunMi 3 года назад

      @@somerandomyoutubechannel5816 I haven’t seen her say it was advanced. She was already overweight before she had hypothyroidism. Untreated hypothyroidism doesn’t cause obesity. It only causes about 5-15 lbs, and not everyone gains. Once patients are treated, and have normal thyroid hormone levels, they are no more likely to gain or lose weight than people without thyroid disease.

    If you follow people like Charles Poliquin he will tell you that the Paleo diet is amazing but if you store a lot of weight in your upper limbs (bingo wings) then your oestrogen is too high and you are eating a disproportionate about of carbs that are justifiable to your lifestyle. If you are going to be a spokesperson on health and wellbeing you have to live and look the part. Famously other speakers like Jeff Cavaliere and Paul Chek espouse that you should be willing to lecture about health wearing nothing but your underwear to illustrate that you live what you preach. If you knew anything about Sarah, you would understand that she has been battling her own autoimmune issues for DECADES and was able to overcome the majority of her medical issues through diet. This includes going from obese to a healthy weight. She is literally a walking advertisement for how this type of diet and lifestyle achieves tangible results. And you know what? Maybe she WOULD be comfortable walking around in her underwear giving this lecture. You should ask her. Because I highly doubt her self worth is centered around a number on a scale, but more about how she has contributed to improving the health of thousands who have been diagnosed with incurable maladies. Your post shows a lot of ignorance (and for that I do actually pity you), but educate yourself just a little bit before making assumptions which highlight that ignorance so blatantly.

      i went vegan and i was mostly vegetarian prior that in order to heal early MS. Guess what - not only it did not stop my disease, it actually made it WORSE. Terrible fatigue, brain fog, lack of energy and low cholesterol made me realize that it was not occasional fish and eggs i was eating prior that caused my disease. It was the excessive grains that were the cause, making my gut permeable and causing systemic inflamation in my body. When i'm 100% strict and i'm not eating any grains, legumes or nightshades, my symptoms are almost non-existent. Fish and eggs never made my disease worse. Of couse it's essential to avoid all processed crap out there and conventional dairy too. So i'm on ketogenic paleo diet for a month now and i'm felling and looking 10 times better than i did on whole-food vegan one and they say it only gets better after a month of 2 :)
