I have a new cedar deck that I will be staining. Question, what grit sandpaper should I use to sand off the mill glaze? Cheers!

Looking at replacing the old deck that came with our house. It will be my first deck purchase and I’m so confused. I hear people say you don’t have to treat cedar decks and it just grays out, others say it won’t last if you don’t oil it. Some say every year, some every other, some 3-5 years. And If using penetrating oils, does that eliminate the nice cedar smell? Also, some people say treated pine lasts longer and requires less maintenance than cedar, others say the opposite. So confused.
I was initially considering composite but I’ve also heard issues with mold and discoloring as well as burning bare feet. Also, since the base will still be wood if/when the base needs replace/repair reusing the composite boards can be challenging and time consuming. And then there is the large upfront cost of composite. Without a Time Machine it is really hard to know. BTW, not a large deck. About 8’ x 17’.

Yes. I did it about 8 months ago. I went with Cedar. Menards had it at a good price. I did stain it with DEFY Crystal Clear. So far I’m happy with it.

I'll be putting cedar down this week. Some people recommend a waiting time before staining...some don't. Some people recommend a sealer...some don't. What do you recommend and can you point me to an products specifically? I live in Western Oregon.
    Thank you, good information here!

If you buy kiln dried cedar you can stain it right away. I get mine from a locally owned lumber yard and never had a problem. Sand off the mill glaze, wipe it down, wipe on a couple of coats of Proluxe and it looks gorgeous. The wood from the big stores tends to be newer and not ready to take a stain yet. But, you probably pay less for it.
