- Hey guys, so there is a lot of weight to this little lesson if you dig in here. Proper triads (1-3-5) in every key on sets of three strings at a time. This is where it’s at. You will see a much quicker learning curve if you spend some time on this. Thanks a bunch! GT

Guthrie Trapp
I went back and counted up all the videos Guthrie has recorded. Bye my count it’s roughly 250!!! I have been following his channel pretty much from the start. I have spent a lot of time working with these videos and have gotten so much out of them. I just wanted to mention how grateful I am for the hard work he has put into this. I can’t imagine coming up with all the intros he has shared with us. That alone is mind boggling, not to mention all the incredible instruction. So thank you GT for generosity. Wishing you all the best.
Hear, hear! Very impressive, very cool, and I too am very grateful! Thank you, Guthrie! 🙌🏻
One thing you consistently work to convey -- and it's vital -- is that melody lives where shapes live. It's easy to get lost memorizing and playing shapes, while missing notes of melodic possibility. Not unlike when we first started learning cowboy chords. Most of us, I'd wager, at least those who learned by ear, started out seeing shapes first, not notes. But once a player gets past the forest, and into the trees, that's the promised land. Thank you as always, Guthrie. 🙏
Very fine and wise. Thanks 👍🏼
this is exactly i was about to ask..... like these melodies lives into shapes or a different story of that....
@@ayushmanbhalla8737 Triads are often used for rhythm, and rhythm fills. But inside those same triads live endless combinations of notes for creating melody and lead. Or a different story, as you suggest. Depends how you look at it -- what you see and hear. Then, what a player can take advantage of, flows from that.
Well said.
I think GT is giving best lessons on RUclips. Tho I do get depressed sometime, watching him play so smooth and effortlessly.
Knowing that its so out of reach for me. But I keep pluggin away.
"I'm kinda kidding, but not really!". LOL, that's the best!
This one got a real laugh from me
I appreciate the honesty
I learn so much even from these abbreviated lessons that I feel like I'm stealing.
Thanks G.T.
I'm learning the CAGED shapes right now. CDG is where I'm at. Taking it slow and really letting them sink in. I'm already learning and remembering where the notes are and how they connect. Thank you
Thanks as ever, I look forward to everything you post, it is always gold.
Thanks as always GT. You are a great inspiration for all of us out here in guitar land.
Mr GT, for me, hearing you name drop only tells me just how generous you are with us. There is no reason, given the company you keep, to share with us so splendidly unless it is at least in part the mark of a generous spirit. So, thank you, drop away! And though of no real value, i can TOTALLY attest to the power of learning your triads...it completely transforms how you will play over the changes....so, preach on ole boy!
Just when I think you can’t add more value with one of your videos, you go and do this. I feel so fortunate to have found your teachings, and all that you share with us. Thank you, Guthrie.
Guthrie - this is a lot of the same things you''ve shown before but for some reason the way you presented it this time really clicked with me. Thanks for all the lessons. Appreciate you.
Thanks Guthrie such good practical ways to practice and make music at the same time.
Another solid lesson. I do this for a few hours like a workout. You just get better and better when focusing on the foundation. Thanks, Guthrie
Another great lesson...I'm starting to get it....thanks Guthrie!
that opening tone, beautiful.
I've just got to say again...True Fire has been SO MUCH FUN! Hats off to Guthrie! I swear if you haven't tried his True Fire series you are REALLY MISSING OUT!
Keep preaching GT. This concept and the private lesson with u previously has really taken my playing forwards. Many thanks 😊
Thanks GT. You have changed the way I play guitar more than any other teacher. I still have a lot of work to do to get all the triads shapes in all positions, but taking a musical approach to practicing is so much more fun. No more aimless noodling, just music! GT = Grinding Triads
Just WoW. The opening impro. Amazing.
Hey Guthrie….when I am trapped in my playing, you are the trapp that releases me…..keep them coming. I love triad playing but you have give me something to get out of the my rut with this.
Been to E Nashville. Had a GT lesson just B4 Covid. Game Changer
Hacker!
I think I may've said this in a previous comment? "I dunno you even realise how good you are", the clips you continue to post are GOLD and we're so freak'n lucky to have you sharing your knowledge and skill with us all.
GBY, best from NZ in the Sth Pac.
Intro is BEAUTIFUL!
So glad you’re posting more ! Love your playing . I still love thinking about when I met you at the Underdog. And your playing was stellar as usual. The picture I have of us shows the same face as when you met Billie Gibbons. You treated me like I was a fellow musician. Thank you for all the sharing you do . Still taking your lessons !
Cannot wait to meet you in Newport! Praying to the festival gods that you get to sit in with some heavyweights because you deserve it, brother! So grateful for all you do!
Great great Lesson...thank you that's a lesson for life!
Enjoy the summer travels GT.....thanks for everything you do for this community,,, an incredible contribution to guitar players worldwide!!!
Fabulous as always Guthrie. Many thanks
Thank you! As always, top tier stuff. But this one is special! Real tools for musicality. “Telecasting”from Arizona.
Can’t wait to meet you one day. Enjoy the pool!!!
What a beautiful lesson! Zillion thanks for this Guthrie!
GT, you are just amazing…so many light bulbs go on everytime see you. Thank you!
You are incredible, thank you for all the wisdom and Gemz you share!
I was waiting for the free mistake, and you could not find a wrong note! Great lesson.
I got a good belly laugh when you said "Oh shit! Sorry!"
This is gold, been following your content for a while and appreciate you showing us how you view the fretboard. Cheers!
What a great way to start a Sunday! Direct, to the point and really helpful. Ignore the knuckleheads. You’re the real deal!
You're awesome GT!
Just got home from work drive the back back roads and man didn't that Lil tune you played in the intro was absolutley perfect, brought me back down to earth after work. thanks man! Also got my first telecaster 2 weeks ago love it!
Thanks Guthrie. I love the way you do it..😊
What a great music!
Great sound!
That is mesmerizing beautiful.
Thanks for the lovely knowledge, you’re a kind and talented musician.
GT as always thank you for all you do on this channel and sharing your personal\professional journey with us all. Much appreciated and your lessons RAWK!!! Looking forward to the new release 👍👍
I love his improv intros just as much as the lessons.
im inspired every video i see keep up the good vibrations!
Another great lesson, thank you!
Thanks GT .. another great tutorial. Focusing on triads has been my key to playing for a long time. But your tips are really elevating my total fretboard understanding, how it all fits together. As an "ear" player for the last 60yrs, this is very helpful. Those triad melodies sound a bit like Willie, whom I have always loved.
another great lesson . thank you Guthrie!
Thanks for the great lesson! So helpful!
Greetings from Holland! Going to East Nashville first week of oktober and hoping to hear you play live😃
This rules! I’ll be working on this for a while I’m sure. 😊
Awesome lesson, thanks
GT another great lesson. This is gold. Thank you so much for taking the time to provide us with these wonderful free nuggets of your guitar wisdom. I hope that you do well with your paid lessons my friend.
Thanks, Guthrie!
Working on getting the triads down. Had to go old school and make some flash cards to keep things straight in my head.
Hard for me to visualize the fretboard, even after 40 years of beating on guitars and basses. This helps!
Great video! Just bought the TrueFire course, can’t wait to go though it, and so glad you’re on there!
Love the analysis. Dig the idea of breaking everything down to triads. You're the real deal. Keep it up Brother.
Thanks Guthrie 😊❤
Lovely playing at the beginning dude :) And great tone! Loving these lessons!
That intro was Dope !!! Really appreciate you sharing sir. It’s helped me tremendously since finding your channel 💯👍
Killing it again ❤
Re Paul Simon. I grew up with the great Jim Oblon. We played in a band together in middle school as well as school bands throughout high school. He’s a monster
Awesome. Thank you!
Man GT. Your channel is so awesome and your expertise just spills out of you like nothing else. I try to consume each one of these videos by breaking them down into 10 or 12 micro segments because there’s just so many nuggets hitting you at one time.
I’ve been playing off and on for nearly 50 years now and a lot of these concepts I understand but you have a perspective on those ideas that makes me start all over learning things that I thought I knew. In many cases, I know how to play things but watching your channel and stealing tips from you actually explains why those things work as they do. In other words, years of playing has been fun, but getting my eyes opened to some of the theories of and why it works makes me eager to learn even more now.
Continued blessings and success with your channel and your work in the music world Maestro.
Guthrie, thanks for the information. Stay hydrated. Drink your water. Especially in humid Nashville. I’m heading to a guitar and play some triads. If it quits raining, Sonny (my pointer) and I will be walking by the river.
Thanks GT! I have finally started digging into this, not sure why I have waited so long?!?
You’ve done a ton for my guitar playing. Thank you!
This is the real deal. I have all these shapes memorized but haven't mastered the combinations to sound musical.
Thank you! Your lessons are always really inspiring.
GTrapp - Great stuff as expected. Keep these videos coming and thank you for the motivation!!!
It always helps. Thanks.
The light just came on! Proper triads across all the strings are now an integral part of my practice time.
This is really sweet. Very pensive
this is such valuable information. thank you!!
Very nice man! Great stuff as always. I was literally tellin my better half how much seriously good musical info and stuff is in these clips. Thanks for sharing!
Keep dropping the names, Guthrie! It is very inspiring! You deserve all the success you have had, and all that will come in the future!
good stuff , best thing i see is you ARE staying physically in shape , , very important : )
Always informative and inspiring...Gracias!
Really enjoying your lessons and courses. Being able to access everyones Video Exchanges as well as my own on ArtistWorks is just gold! Chugging through the Truefire course as well. Seeing improvement in my playing all the time! Keep on rockin GT👍
Great lesson!
Guthrie, thanks so much for all your great lessons on YT, Artistworks and Truefire. You make me pick up that Tele over and over! 😎
Yea. I can't say Lineally correctly either. Ever. lol.. Great video , Guthrie..
Makes total sense. I wanna just play cool lead guitar but I don’t know the basics so I end up not hitting or landing on the “right” note. I have to take the time to learn the guitar neck.
I’m really looking forward to seeing you with Oz in NY at the Bitter End!!
I have come to realize the ability for someone to play like GT without deep knowledge of theory is extremely unlikely. This is very cerebral playing at a fast pace. He can do this because he knows not only exactly what works, but why. His playing and melodies exude confidence. Maestro.
It’s nice to have “feel” but it will never beat knowledge.
Great ideas, GT. No used tires here.
Beautiful intro!!! ❤
Really loving this Guthrie! I hope you had a great weekend and enjoy Spain!
Even though I'm more of a rock guitarist, it is really helpful to see where everything comes from! You're teaching the important fundemantals, loving it!
It's amazing that some of the most melodic playing happens when you outline the harmony.
Yes man, thank you for keeping music real and great content. I keep re watching this one, sooo good.
You might not think its rocket science but its definitely rocket fuel. one of the most enlightening lessons I've ever seen. I consider you an old guy when it comes to guitar! Such generosity to share your knowledge and with a brilliant delivery.
Thanks
NYC?? WHAT!!! My neck of the woods man. Def coming to see you and Oz!!! Hey you mentioned Billy J eating breakfast. FYI, Richie Cannata-his original Sax player-runs the open jam at The Bitter End on Mondays. You HAVE to drop in on that if you can. He’s an amazing guy! God bless man. Cannot wait to catch you and Oz.
thanks master!
What’s the base scale you’re using for the “melody notes” to connect the triads? D major?
I'm blown away by how much I've learned from you in the last year. Thanks so much Guthrie!
Very nice!
I am just amazed every time I watch you. If you could give me some direction on your videos? I want to concentrate on triad studies but I really don’t know where to start looking at the true fire and artist works courses on the surface I don’t know where to begin.
Hi GT!
Funny you should Mention Billy Joel.
I saw him play in 1972 I think, at the Roxy theater in Northampton Pennsylvania for two dollars. Lol! I still live in the Allentown area.
his music has influenced me since then.
You know that chip on your shoulder!! Lol!
Thank you again for reaching out with some education for us poor guys!
Jam out on Positively 4th St. in the Village!!
And we are living here in Allentown!!! 🎸🎸🎸
PS I bought one of your shirts!
Wow! That was so melodic even though you were noodling around 😄. I asked awhile back if you did session work for up and coming artists. After hearing you talk about all the people you have worked with boy do I feel stupid lol. Hell… who needs session work 😂
Did you play with Jerry opening for Paul Simon on his “Surprise” tour? I think I saw you in Lake Tahoe…. Thanks for everything!
Yes. That was the tour 👍
i wish my teacher in the 80s taught this stuff!! Music trains the brain how to see things in a certain way sometimes re training can be a challenge.. Thanks Guthrie for showing us old dogs new tricks
Ready to buy that new album!
