  • Honda Acura J Series V6 Accord, Pilot Odyssey Ridgeline MDX RL CL TL. Covers 3.0L 3.2L 3.5L 3.7L J Series engines. Crankshaft pulley bolt can be a real pain but take your time and sometimes you have to use brute force to get it free from the crankshaft.

The problem isn't your wimpy little ratchet but rather that trying to loosen the pulley bolt with your wimpy little ratchet doesn't do much more than spin the crank. Don't feel bad though, you'll get the same results with your friend's big, whopping ratchet. A number of methods have been concocted over the years to stop crank spin, none of which work all that great, like chain wrenches that usually end up marring the pulley to lodging scary objects in between the flywheel and bell housing. The solution lies with the guys who developed the pulley in the first place, and for a fraction of the cost of that new air compressor. honda's crankshaft pulley holder slips inside any '90 and newer honda pulley with a 50mm hex opening and fastens to most frames via a preexisting 8mm threaded hole. With the crank locked in place, even your wimpy little ratchet can get it to budge.
If it is the Accord, yeah, those crankbolts are a SOB to get out; really the hardest part of a timing belt R&R on an Accord. I believe the factory uses red loctite on them.
Most 1/2 impacts don't have enough balls to remove them. You definitely need the crank hold down tool (about $45) before you tackle this job. I have helped the removal by applying a small amount of heat to the face of the bolt with a plumpers type torch. I follow it up by using a 4ft piece of steel cheater pipe on a breaker bar while someone holds the hold down tool in place.
Had one that make a gunshot type sound when the bolt finally broke loose; sounded like someone shot a rifle in the shop....scared the crap out of everyone, they were ducking behind cars and tool boxes

I bought a Milwaukee 2767-20 1/2" High Torque Impact Wrench w/ 48-11-1850 5.0Ah Battery, a Lisle 77080 19 mm Harmonic Balancer Socket for Honda/Acura & other assorted items for the timing-belt job in my 4th-Gen Acura TL.
With that High Impact wrench (& Lisle 19mm socket) that bolt came off like butter 🧈. I bought those things from Amazon after watching my brothers try to take that bolt of two other 4th-Gen TLs & a 3rd-Gen for an entire day. When it was my turn to do the job on my car I got ready. I simply brought a bazooka to a knife fight lol.

Yessir, spent 5 hours last Saturday playing with the bolt, woke up Sunday morning and took my ass to home Depot for the Milwaukee. Not even 5 seconds of torquing and it was completely off. Love how the accepted methods seem to be using the starter and jamming a breaker bar in your suspension or just shelling out for a Milwaukee. Awesome tool

I’m not a fan of the starter trick. Not only are you putting a tremendous amount of stress of the internal workings of the engine I have heard of guys stripping the bolt trying to do that. Then your in a real world of hurt!

@@michaelsimmons4230 Yep, a high torque electric wrench & a “high-mass” 19mm bolt (for J-series V6 engines) will do the job in less than 3secs… vs 3 hours with more conventional ways.
& I’ve used the starter-engine torque trick when trying to take off a super tight wheel hub bolt. It works but it could be dangerous.

Okay day 2 of toiling with this damn bolt. I tried a Harbor “Fright” Earthquake 1200 lbs of torque half inch socket impactor. Nothing. Bought an electric Bauer 1/2” impactor with a shit ton of torque and break away power. Nothing. I snapped a 1/2” breaker bar that was made by TEQ TOOLS….. that sucks. The bar did too. Now I bought the big stuff. 3/4” breaker bar, to a 1/2” extender attached to a 1/2” 19 mm socket. This doesn’t work I’m calling the local Lake Michigan DNR and see if they need a new addition to the reef.

I ran a bunch of 1/2" extensions out from the multiplier and rested them on a jack stand and used a breaker bar with a 4 ft. cheater pipe on it and it broke loose. Even though the torque multiplier is rated for 1100 ft/lbs, I still had to put out on that cheater pipe. My 450 ft/lb. electric impact with the special crankshaft 19mm socket from Honda was not enough to break it loose.

The crankshaft pulley can only be put on one way. It has a notch that lines up with a woodriff key on the crankshaft. If you have those alligned than timing for your drive belt should be good. Now if you are going to change the timing belt, that is something completely different.

I think part of the reason why that bolt gets stuck, aside from peculiar engineering that Honda's known for, is that whoever reinstalled the bolt didn't follow the correct procedure; apply oil on part of the thread & between the bolt head & the washer.
