This used to be me years ago. This is a high risk endeavor. I now use a high torque Milwaukee electric impact with the Lisle weighted socket and haven't had a problem since. Honda bolts no longer scare me as they used to. They are no longer the boss of me. My mama tells me that I am a big boy now.
Yeah, I too used the Milwauke 1/2" M18 impact. Works great.
I'm getting ready to replace that seal on a 2004 Honda CR-V. Easier to do than I expected. Mine has been leaking for years and just got worse. Definitely can't put it off any more. Good pointers. Thanks. Of course having access to the auto hobby shop and all their tools on Wright-Patterson AFB will make my life way easier.
I found today this was my problem. I used old school method to break thr bolt off. That thing is truly a beast. I really wish to replace that harmonic balancer. Mine was shredded.

Thanks for your suggestions. I had to use my 3/4 inch drive, 3 ft cheater, plus a 2ft pipe wrench which finally did the trick. The pipe wrench was on the 3/4 extension.

Engine bump with a breaker bar works great as well. But as mentioned in comments, the super thick crankshaft socket works great as well

Thanks for the video, man I'm having the same problem with a 03 Honda Element, oil all over everything on that passenger side, which caused the serpentine belt to slip off and shred around the engine, time to break out the breaker bar and cheater pipe. Great job on the video. Good shots of what needs to be done. I'm trying to find out where mine is leaking, I think it might be the crankshaft seal or oil pan. I tried cleaning it up first, then added some dye to the system, going to drive a day or so to see if I can find it. I wish it was easier to tell where this thing is leaking. Oil pans gaskets are even more of a pain than this repair.
I've done a lot of things to a lot of cars but this video will help me in the future. Thanks!

Your engine is little bit oily but you won this battle 👍😁 For all of you out there having hard time losing the bolt. If you lock the flywheel it would be much easyer because it wouldn't spring that much it would be like dead still. Use extension as short as possible this was really not a good idea because it was twisting so much to do this you have to place the bar in front and under the bumper. You will have to jack up the car for more room and trust me you don't really need such a long bar to break it!
Man, I have done hundreds of crank seals in my lifetime, and I have never seen one that tight, that's insane
Hey man great video. It actually took my father-in-law to come over we had a 2-ft breaker bar and it took foot cheater bar on that boat the busted loose. I wasn't heavy enough by father-in-law is a 450 lb man sat on the end of that to break it loose it was ridiculous. I have a leak not sure where it's coming from but I did a entire overhaul with gaskets on the top end not sure about the crank shaft seal.
I just pulled my 2.4 apart for a timing job and a VTC replacement (203,000 miles it was rattling and the chain was stretched). I bought the $40 50mm Honda crank tool. You have to break it loose manually unless you have the heavy mass Lyle 19mm socket. Once you break it loose(took me about 2 mins), zip it off with an impact. Fyi, new crank bolt is 130ftlbs, remove, then torque to 36ftlbs. If you reuse the old bolt it's just 36ftlbs.
@DavidSanchez ..if you re-use the old bolt it's only 36 ft/lbs? is that because the initial install "compresses" the bolt somewhat? Would there be any negative consequence of followup work reusing the bolt and then applying the full, new-install torque spec?

Have you tried the Lisle chunky 19mm socket? I've seen people pop it off way easier with an impact and that socket.
I have that same issue my belt is sqeak on my f23a7 odyssey I will check the oil seal now :)
Hey there, I've been working on my 03 accord pulleys and found your video. In previous videos I found a guy who had an impact socket for this but its walls were like a half inch thick as opposed to the typical 2 or 3 mm. The point being to increase the rotational force due to the increased weight. Not sure what he called it but I definitely recommend giving it a search you done nearly broke your precious breaker bar so surely you find it worth it 😂

Usually this happens to the Toyota 4cylinder engine also but if you tap/hit the top center of the bolt it comes right off. A harmonic hammer works good for this.

When breaking loose super stuck bolts sometimes it helps to give the breaker bar or cheater pipe a few good hits with a mini sledge while you're pulling on it, acts like a literal impact wrench.

fantastic video and all, but do we need to worry about cleaning the sprayed oil that is on the timing belt from the leak, or will that just work its way off? if so whats the best way to do that?
The seal pulling tool is about $8 at Harbor Freight.
Why are you using 10 feet of extensions?
The trick is to give a jerk motion to it and fewer extensions as possible but it sucks

I had to borrow a 1” breaker bar and socket/extension from a farmer friend and I leveraged it on a jack stand, put a cheater bar over the breaker bar and finally popped it loose.
Dang have to do one a 2006 CRV hope mine is not that tight
Wow. What size socket drive were you using? 1/2 in or 3/4? Would some heat from a propane torch applied to the head of the bolt help break the bond?

That harmonic balancer bolt is nasty, it broke one of my impact sockets. I got a harmonic balancer socket, and it got it off easily. Definitely recommend getting it off Amazon.
For future reference they have a weighted socket design just for that crank bolt. Zipps right off with impact. Check it out worth every penny 👍🏽

The holder tool is still the way to go because it holds the crankshaft pulley still when you are trying to torque the bolt during reassembly. Now if you don't believe in torquing the bolts go ahead and use the weighted socket. In addition, Honda says to never use an impact wrench to tighten that bolt back up.
this bolt uses OEM locktite from factory.
I've done it by starting the car with the breaker bar touching the ground

Nowhere to rent that tool here in UK, bought one for £20. Pretty much how i done it, was using a cheap extension bar and the thing started to twist. I managed to get there in the end, belt and water pump all done.

If that seal leaks will it always make that mess or just drip straight down??? My Honda elements has a drip under the crankpully but it's around between the pan and the block. I'm sure it's the pan gasket but I have the seal doubt in my head now

I just don't know we're the oil is coming from looks like the same place car has noises when I start it and when I drive noise comes and goes I see alternator is fine 14 on multimeter starter okay and pump I just changed it so I saw alot of leak of oil under the alternator might be the same problem oil leak help what do you say?

I am guessing this chain driving, the ones with a belt you would have too as the seal is being the timing belt pulley.

At the 10:10 mark, when you are putting the seal in... what is it suppose to be flush with? It has a beveled edge. Someone please help me ASAP! Thank you!!!!

How deep does the pin go inside?
Use an oxyacetylene torch. Then a regular impact grade 19mm will zip it off.
Water pump? Oil was getting all over the water pump too? You can't even see the water pump so how do you know this.
I'm amazed at the amount of mechanics, including Honda dealership service managers that don't know the water pump is internal and driven by the timing belt.

You probably should have changed the harmonic balancer, it looks like the rubber between the two halves of the balancer had deteriorated pretty bad.

With All Due Respect:
Take it from an "Old School" Auto/Diesel Mechanic.
If you have a good Compressor, and a good 1/2" Impact Wrench, just order or purchase what is Called a
"Lisle 77080 19 MM Harmonic Balancer Socket." You can buy it on Amazon for $20-$25. You won't need to purchase the Honda back up wrench.
Should you not have an Air Compressor or an impact wrench, You can rent a "Milwaukee 2767-20 M18 Fuel High Torque 1/2" Impact Wrench from Home Depot for about $40-$45. However, You will still have to buy the Lisle 77080 thou from Amazon.
(Trust me on this Folks, saves you Time and Swearing)

Bro, too much flexing in the 1/2" SQ Dr Extension Bar when you you go too long especially when using two piece extension bar (All your turning effort absorbed). Move next size up to 3/4" Sq Dr with a Female 3/4" sq Dr to Male 1/2" sq Dr. Adaptor to connect your 6PT deep socket 19mm. You may ask an assistant to knock the handle bar whilst you turn.
Same for a 2005 Honda civic coupe ?

Are there any other leaks that cause a big mess on the belt like that?
VTEC solenoid gasket, oil pressure sensor (can't remember if this has a separate gasket), also, make sure it's dry around your valve cover. One tip about the valve cover: If you ever need to remove it, consider if you want to try lifting the rear of the car with jacks. When I removed the valve cover to tweak the valve clearances, I recall there was a bit of pitch to the rear that encouraged oil to dribble down the back side of the block. It's possible my location wasn't flat enough, but I made a note to remember that if I ever went back under that cover.
what did you clean the grease off with?
I can’t remember but it’s just regular degreaser

I mean there’s a lot of stuff at the store you can use to slow down the oil leak but I would just fix it! You know what I mean.
I have an oil leak on my passenger side of my Honda Accord 2005 do you think this can be the problem? I ordered my vtec and I’m changing it this weekend
It’s hard to say without seeing it. I will say this that car had a lot of oil going everywhere on the passenger side.

Jack, great question. I'm anticipating doing this job. Did you ever find out, or try it and learn one way or the other? :) I guess one could always just do an oil change along with this repair and not have to worry about it..
Can the leak be causing a high pitch squealing on the resonator Crankshaft pulley?
I would expect you'd hear more of a 'chirping' sound, likely early in the morning or whenever the engine sat long enough to cool off. If you're hearing a true "squealing" noise, try replacing your belt first. If it's old and stretched a bit, it's not grabbing the pulleys enough and it's squealing. It's also possible your belt tensioner is too worn out to apply proper tension. Good news is the tensioner is a relatively cheap part that isn't too hard to replace. (A youtuber called "speedkar" iirc has a water pump video that does a good job showing it.) But the bad news is, you probably also have something leaking on the belt that's lubricating it enough to slip real bad, which working together is producing the squeal.
@@callbackdons nope , not the belt or crankshaft pulley already replaced both of them and the squeaky noise still there, I start the car with out the serpentine belt and still noise coming from probably inside the engine, the sound is like when brake pads worn out and make metal contact with the rotor.
The next guess is one of the timing belt pulleys

By adding all those extenders, you’re losing a ton of torque. And use 1/2” or 3/4 not 3/8 if you have to.
....... Im pretty sure that's not how that works buddy but good effort. Maybe if he was using and impact then sure. He might be losing like 5 percent. Do a little research
