  • Making a sweatshirt or t-shirt is fun and easy, though it might sound intimidating at first. People are often scared to sew with knits and stretchy fabrics. But you should never fear the fabric! I'll show you how to sew with knit ribbing, and how to sew that ribbing into the neckline and sleeve cuffs, so you can make a pro-looking sweatshirt too.

    You are so fortunate to live in the states where they have nice big fabric stores... it sucks in Canada. Even the larger stores don't carry adorable fabric and if they do it's a fortune. I love you videos though... super inspiring.

    Don't use a contrasting thread unless you can be amazingly precise with your sticking!
    This is a very good tutorial! The pace is great and the information is relayed in a very understandable manner.
    So many "tutorials" are not helpful. Some have a lot of unnecessary chatter. Others are overly complicated leave out really important information. The viewer is left confused or in jeopardy of messing up whatever the thing that prompted the tutorial viewing.
    Two thumbs up!

    Ribbing or collars or whatever referred to, took me a bit of practice until acceptable, some way too wonky to wear. Rest of garment didn't need as much precision as these, your vids definitely instructed me past the wrongs I was doing, into something good and wearable, and I do wear the garments! Thanks a bunch!!!!!

    hey dana! a little tip for your rotary cutter. rest your index finger along the top of your cutter (the plastic part. oh goodness thats important. please dont cut your finger off)
    you wont need to press as hard i to the fabric, your wrist will stabilize and its more ergonomical to do so. you also have more control. its kinda like "pointing" in the direction you want to cut with your finger resting on the rotary cutter handle. (im a quilter and garment sewist. so i have to cut alot of fabric)

    2 questions, 1- how would i complete this with a turtleneck? can i not fold over the ribbing, in half, rather sew on layer and fold over the extra to make the turtleneck? 2- for a fancier garment with ribbing, is the zigzag topstitch necessary? And can I use a ribbing for a neckline with a non-stretch fabric?

    • @MADEEveryday
      @MADEEveryday  4 года назад

      The pattern only goes up to size 12. But you could draw the lines out to make a larger size (you would need to figure out the sizing on your own, based on a sweatshirt you own). And yes, you can make it out of sweatshirt fabric, rather than fleece. The gray sweatshirt example you see in the beginning of this video is made of sweatshirt fabric. You can see more examples and ideas in the pattern listing here: shop.madeeveryday.com/products/everyday-sweatshirt

    Thank you, thank you, thank you! I had no idea that you can buy ribbing by the yard. I need to make a pair of 'arm protectors' for my hubby. I saw some online at Buck & Buck , but they cost fourteen dollars a pair. I know I can make them much cheaper and your video showed me exactly what I needed to know about sewing the ribbing on the ends. You are a really good teacher. Your teaching style makes one feel like you are giving your viewers a private lesson. Maybe you could make a video on how to make "arm protectors" for people who need to make a pair for a loved one. You can see the ones I'm talking about at the Buck & Buck website here: www.buckandbuck.com/mens-polar-fleece-arm-protectors.html#description-title
    (Disclaimer: I have no connection to Buck & Buck other than being a customer.) Thank you again for your awesome video.

    Can this be made using flannel instead of fleece?

    • @MADEEveryday
      @MADEEveryday  Год назад

      Sure, you could try that. It will be lighter weight and not as structured as using fleece or sweatshirt fleece. And you will definitely want to finish off the seams with a zigzag stitch, or a serger, or by trimming the edges with pinking shears (those zigzag looking scissors) or the flannel will fray badly at the seam edges.

    • @Trish312
      @Trish312 Год назад

      @@MADEEveryday What do you mean by "not as structured "? My aunt loves flannel but hates buttoned up shirts so she ask me to make her pull over flannel tops. And your video seemed to be the best option for that. Love your videos by the way!

    • @MADEEveryday
      @MADEEveryday  Год назад

      @@Trish312 Flannel is a lighter weight fabric than fleece or sweatshirt fabric so it will just be more "floppy" in this style of top, rather than more "structured" and hold its shape like a sweatshirt would.

  • @xinalorreen2031
    @xinalorreen2031 22 дня назад

    I hope you have since learned how to do this correctly. This video shouldn't even be online, in my opinion. When adding ribbed cuffs to sleeves, the sleeve seam is sewn together, and the cuff is sewn into a circle, into a cuff, and then the cuff is attached to the sleeve. Attaching the cuff to a sleeve panel and *then* sewing it into a tube results in the inner seam going all the way to the end of the cuff, which it shouldn't do.

    • @MADEEveryday
      @MADEEveryday  21 день назад

      Yep that's another way to do it also! Just depends on skill level. I like sewing cuffs the way you showed also, but it's harder for some people to sew in the round like that. If you want a more polished look, then follow the method I showed for the neckline!
