Loved early Dylan when his voice carried some kind of magic to it. I realize voices do change a bit over the years for singers, depending on if the person smoked, drank, drugs & just aging, but as much as I respect the legend that is Dylan, his last 20 years have been difficult to listen to.

Glad you enjoy it, mate. It’s a great track. As far as I know, only released on The Cutting Edge Collector’s Edition. Lovely audience tape for the time. Cheers 🍻

Amazing to hear this!! I love when he sprinkled this one into his 65-66 tour setlists, like that amazing version in Sydney! (Although aren't there a couple more 65 versions from Berkeley and San Jose in December?)

I forgot about the Berkeley concert! He didn’t play it in San Jose, according to Dylan’s website. That was the one I was missing. Thanks!

Brilliant to hear! Love his use of elongated notes, not so much songs more exercises in tonal breath control!

Does anybody know if this is The Band playing with him? Somehow it doesn't sound like it.

From the days when there wasn't so much difference between the sound of Dylan's live performances and the original studio recordings.

He was recording everything pretty much live at this time. Most of the bands started experimenting with studio tech around this time, but it was never his style. I remember hearing something similar to the fact that Sgt Pepper took more recording time than all of Dylan's albums up to either Blonde on Blonde or Blood On the Tracks. Can't remember which milestone it was, but either way it says a lot! Dylan worked fast back then

Hey, any chance you can upload a 64/65 version of Chimes of Freedom close to the original? Thank you! :)

It's seen as a period, when really it just have been a blink of the eye. People beingnice, because that's what the feel they are supposed to do, and then they turn against you. Because that's what they think they are supposed to do.It's a drag.

In my opinion the studio version is one of his best song with regard to the tune and use of his voice. The 1966 Tour live version of this song suffers from a certain emphatic way of singing. (I can extend this consideration to all the songs of that tour)

I agree. I do prefer his earlier stuff from ‘65, when his voice was crisper and packed a more honest punch. That isn’t to say some songs fit his thinner ‘66 voice. For this song, however, his ‘65 voice was much better.

Funny how he decidedly changed his voice every year

Benjamin Barnes It really is. Literally every year in the 60s. You can hear something and say, “that’s ‘64 Dylan.” Part of the reason why he’s such a good singer in my eyes. He’s a chameleon.

@@SwinginPig I feel that with his 66 voice this almost entirely melds into rolling stone. Something I don't agree with when people say it normally
