I was reading a book about Dylan a few years back and it pointed out that this song is the musical equivalent of a Cubist painting by Picasso, where it allows you to see a single object simultaneously from several points of view. The perspective in the song shifts again and again from "I" to "she" to "he" and ends up back at "I" at the end, letting us know that the characters in the song, and everyone listening to the song, all "feel the same, we just saw it from a different point of view." Brilliant and beautiful.

I felt like I wasn’t sitting alone drinking beer but instead had a friend in Bob and came to also appreciate not just the sadness of the album but the themes of hope as well. For some reason Dylan skipped the best verse on this song. It is so amazing that I think it should be here: She lit a burner on the stove And offered me a pipe “I thought you’d never say hello,” she said “You look like the silent type” Then she opened up a book of poems And handed it to me Written by an Italian poet From the thirteenth century And every one of them words rang true And glowed like burnin’ coal Pourin’ off of every page Like it was written in my soul from me to you Tangled up in blue
+Mr. Tuthill Yes this performance WOULD be perfect if he never skipped my 2nd favourite verse in the song. However I really like the rewrite here: He had a job in Santa Fe Working in an old hotel But he never did like it all that much And one day it just went to hell So he drifted down to New Orleans Lucky not to be destroyed Where they got him a job on a fishin' boat Docked outside Delacroix The last line is one of the greatest rhymes he ever wrote.
+Sneaky Deaky My favorite is : "She was workin' in a topless place And I stopped in for a beer, I just kept looking' at the side of her face In the spotlight so clear. And later on as the crowd thinned out I's just about to do the same, She was standing there in back of my chair Said to me, "Don't I know your name?" I muttered somethin' underneath my breath, She studied the lines on my face. I must admit I felt a little uneasy When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe, Tangled up in blue."Always gives me chills.

I vividly remember Dylan performing this song at the Rolling Thunder Revue in Rochester on November 17, 1975. I knew immediately that that performance would live inside me forever. It’s impossible to express the depth of gratitude I feel for having this astonishingly beautiful music alive always.
Bob Dylan and Tom Waits did more for our souls than all the other songwriters of the last century. The ending of the film St Vincent made me cry remembering all of my friends who didn't make it into this century.
I am not familiar with the music of Tom Waits, but Bob Dylan’s what principles I learned, through Bob Dylan’s lyrics, first listening to Masters of War when I was 14, are the foundational life changing influence that opened the door to being receptive to Spiritual writings by Saints and God breathed teachings….
My uncle Patrick Leer was a roadie for Rolling Thunder at 18 & is in Renaldo & Clara. his job was to keep track of Allen Ginsberg. He had great stories. Gave me a Rolling Thunder pin before he died. Most amazing powerful tour ever I think
Brilliant lyrical storytelling. No one comes close to the master. This song is like a 1000 page epic novel from the 19th century compressed into a 5 minute song. It encompasses so many places, situations and people so quickly and so specifically that it's almost hard to keep up. This live version is even more interesting in that Bob seems to start off calm and collected. But by mid way thru the song you can see his face start to change to a scowl, and the tempo of the song becomes more fast paced and frenzied. And the Harmonica solo at the end is just an instrument to blow off steam as he finishes the song. So much going on in this song that must have really hurt Bob in real life, behind all of the named locations and allusions buried in the lyrics...
He wasn't a bad lookin dude at all when he was young. Eyes were beautiful here. He's a living legend for sure. I love to listen to his songs...always makes me think.
Why do you say that? He has said things like he wanted to follow or be bigger than Elvis. With respect to songwriting, he has said that he wrote songs because he had to sing them, and no one was writing the songs he wanted to sing. I think he is a poet, a great poet, but he didn't set out to be such. He set out to make a living as a musician first.
Absolutely hard to sing. To synchronize that difficult phrasing with a solo guitar performance can only be accomplished well by one guy. We just watched him.
I saw this video on vh1 late one night in '96 As a 14 year old lad who had never knowingly heard bob Dylan's music. By the time he started singing I was transfixed. By the end of the song I was blown away. That was the start of my lifelong obsession with the great man and his amazing songs✌🏻
if you call this 'bob' a genius, then what word do you use for Beethoven? for a primitiv people who think ground bovine muscle in the form of a "hamburger" is cuisine, i can see how the music of his dim-witted mediocrity would be art.
jhak1341 What do you mean? I use the term pop as short for 'popular', to distinguish nowadays, easy accessible, widely available and widely appreciated music from classical music. In this use of the word there's no evaluation of quality implied. A subset of pop music could be folk music. But I think Bob Dylan's work in the 1970's - more specifically the albums 'Desire' and 'Blood on the tracks' - is much more than folk. It has almost become a genre of itself. I never thought he would reach these heights again, but he did with his recent album 'Tempest'. A masterpiece.
This dude straight up makes my day better no matter my mood. I can be having the worst of the worst days, and I just listen to him. Instantly I feel so much better, and I’m so mad I was born too late to listen to him in his prime.
I was a teenager in the mid 80's. This song was played on rotation on MTV. I was and am still a metal head. This song is so metal!!!! It is like Johnny Cash doing Hurt. Horns up
I first heard Dylan on mtv unplugged and I’m a big fan ever since probably 80s or early 90s I like most 60s music great time for music even tho I wasn’t alive then
Nothing the man could do, and he tried really, really hard, could quench or drown the fire and ferocity of his spirit. All that "songs from the front driveway nonsense." He reemerged like a tornado. Fabulous performance.
"Every one of them words rang true/ and glowed like burning coal/ pouring off every page like it was written in my soul from me to you" Congratulations on the Nobel Prize, Bob Dylan!!

She lit a burner on the stove
And offered me a pipe
“I thought you’d never say hello,” she said
“You look like the silent type”
Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an Italian poet
From the thirteenth century
And every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burnin’ coal
Pourin’ off of every page
Like it was written in my soul from me to you
Tangled up in blue
+Mr. Tuthill - Genius.
+Mr. Tuthill
Yes this performance WOULD be perfect if he never skipped my 2nd favourite verse in the song.
However I really like the rewrite here:
He had a job in Santa Fe
Working in an old hotel
But he never did like it all that much
And one day it just went to hell
So he drifted down to New Orleans
Lucky not to be destroyed
Where they got him a job on a fishin' boat
Docked outside Delacroix
The last line is one of the greatest rhymes he ever wrote.
Yes, love this verse...
agreed friend
+Sneaky Deaky My favorite is :
"She was workin' in a topless place
And I stopped in for a beer,
I just kept looking' at the side of her face
In the spotlight so clear.
And later on as the crowd thinned out
I's just about to do the same,
She was standing there in back of my chair
Said to me, "Don't I know your name?"
I muttered somethin' underneath my breath,
She studied the lines on my face.
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe,
Tangled up in blue."Always gives me chills.
I AM IN DELACROIX RIGHT NOW!!
No boat job though
Dylan’s an absolute blessing to us with his music. Blessings be upon him

WELL DESERVED NOBEL prize, sir! THANK YOU for years of awesome music and lyrics! Born in '57 and appreciate ALL of your work!
Genius
saved my damn life
Born in '57 as well. SOUL SISTA!😘
As a literature professor i agree
Born in 59. Listening to the bard since my beatnick stwp dad turned me on in 69. Still digging it
One of the greatest songs ever written - so granular and complex, yet so simple. And he plays with the lyrics just for fun.
He omitted the line, "She lit a burner on the stove, and offered me a pipe.." I miss that
I'm so proud to be named after this legend
Bob?
Dylan
Lovely name :)
Same!
Very cool.
the only thing I know how to do is to keep on keepin on
-11 years later, If you're still watching this you're a legend.
“But me, I’m still on the road heading for another joint.”
I feel that.
Watched this concert via TV when living in Boston for a year...I was 26 then, am 69 now..he's been my hero since I first heard Tambourine Man at age 12
I recall this being on TV, I was in NH. Dylan on TV?? It was very odd.
Always loved Dylan, but watching the Rolling Thunder Doc, you see Dylan at his absolute best live. He was on fire on this tour and what a group of musicians\outlaws he roamed the country with!
My heart is filled with joy knowing that I am blessed with the best fans, your support is what keeps me going.
Thanks for commenting, I appreciate the feedback!🌹🌹
Talented guy, like most talented people they are STRANGE!
+Paul Dubyna Its perspective, not talent.
CagerZoc Thank you

One of the strangest. And .....one of the most talented. Ever.
Why is it strange that he didn't comment on Prince's death? What am I missing here?
❤. I Love Bob Dylan ❤
Me too
This song puts me at ease, just sorta makes me feel like everything is gonna be alright.
Duck...incoming!🌠
I love this tune. Dylan knows how to tell a good story, a good love story because all stories are love stories. We all know how it feels to be "tangled up in blue."
@Bryant Benson I have been listening to him for fifty-eight years. Some of my music has been influenced by him, no doubt. Here is my latest: ruclips.net/video/59FrTlhBH9g/видео.html. Tell me what you think, Bryant. Thanks.

I'd like to add Leonard Cohen to your list along with Bob and Tom. Good choices all around.
Kris Kristofferson enters the chat
I loved that movie 🎬 too. Kinda hard not to get choked up watching that, and yes, loved that ending.
add to that list Hank Williams, so many hits and they're still played and recorded
Definitely my favorite Dylan song, and probably my favorite song, period.
Generational !! On all levels, sadly gen z doesnt care. Music spans generations, lets us believe and dream. Thank you Bob Dylan
The true poet. Bob without a doubt you earned your fame.
My uncle Patrick Leer was a roadie for Rolling Thunder at 18 & is in Renaldo & Clara. his job was to keep track of Allen Ginsberg. He had great stories. Gave me a Rolling Thunder pin before he died. Most amazing powerful tour ever I think
Brandon Young I saw that one in Toronto. What a show!
Just saw him last night at Tanglewood. Fucking ridiculous. Guy still whips out that harmonica like its his fucking job.
For sharing your experience with one the sharpest and most poignant...I met Bob in your words while I was listening. Thanks
*
I dont know if you're complimenting him or not, its kind of unclear with the words you use.
Are the f bombs replacements for commas or a display of non-creative English?
oh shut the comma up.
One of my favorite Dylan songs. Never would get tired of listening to it .
Singer.....songwriter.......poet.......troubadour
Oh my, look at those beautiful blue eyes.
+LoveFlatfootin1 I never noticed that till you pointed it out. Bob does have blue eyes, but they look so serious and scary to me.
+NELSON X They are really intense - it adds to his character and appeal, I guess :-)
Never thought blue could be so provoking
Your eyes are like bluejay eggs.
As Joan Baez sang in her song 'Diamonds and Rust'.. "As I remember, your eyes were bluer than robin's eggs."
There be truth in that he enacted a whole era
That's just silly. He's good but not good...no ever could be.
Congratulations you are the best God bless

I think that's how he got it, the Nobel prize. Just kept on doing his thing. Well done.
This performance is phenomenal, what more could he have possibly given to this, my favorite version of this incredible song.
He wasn't a bad lookin dude at all when he was young. Eyes were beautiful here. He's a living legend for sure. I love to listen to his songs...always makes me think.
Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here
bob dylan 80 years! Congrats Bob, let's go to 90!
When I watch this, I feel nothing but respect oozing from my inner being. This guy is a REAL folk hero.
He actually intended to be a poet.
Let's not think about
His voice sounds so good! … And not an easy song to sing - especially at that tempo ….
roger james he’s always in too even too those people that claim they can’t understand the words he’s singing
Helloo!! I covered this song in my channel and I really hope you like it!! See you! 😊
Absolutely hard to sing. To synchronize that difficult phrasing with a solo guitar performance can only be accomplished well by one guy. We just watched him.
???????????????????
I was brought up with this album..Was brought up, my mom's favorite song..
I call it her song..
Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here
I saw this video on vh1 late one night in '96
As a 14 year old lad who had never knowingly heard bob Dylan's music.
By the time he started singing I was transfixed.
By the end of the song I was blown away.
That was the start of my lifelong obsession with the great man and his amazing songs✌🏻

I have heard a lot of great lyrics in my life, but I've always rated this in my top list.how he gelled all the lines together is pure genius.
Helloo!!! I covered this song in my channel and I really hope you like it! See you!!😊
The phrasing is something. that even he will change. Extremely difficult.
if you call this 'bob' a genius, then what word do you use for Beethoven? for a primitiv people who think ground bovine muscle in the form of a "hamburger" is cuisine, i can see how the music of his dim-witted mediocrity would be art.
"The only thing I knew how to do was keep-on keepin-on like a bird that flew..."
These are very inspirational lyrics for me since I was young.
It's crazy that this song only has 8.5 million views.

My high school years. Great music was everywhere. Bob was one, Queen was another. Just so much awesome songs to grow up on.
Every time I return to Bob Dylan's songs from the album 'Blood on the Tracks', I get more convinced it's not just pop music, it's great literature.
Pop?
SlenderMan
Well, kind of...
It was never pop in the first place?
jhak1341 What do you mean? I use the term pop as short for 'popular', to distinguish nowadays, easy accessible, widely available and widely appreciated music from classical music. In this use of the word there's no evaluation of quality implied. A subset of pop music could be folk music. But I think Bob Dylan's work in the 1970's - more specifically the albums 'Desire' and 'Blood on the tracks' - is much more than folk. It has almost become a genre of itself. I never thought he would reach these heights again, but he did with his recent album 'Tempest'. A masterpiece.
Gerrit Morren I agree with your definition of the pop.
This dude straight up makes my day better no matter my mood. I can be having the worst of the worst days, and I just listen to him. Instantly I feel so much better, and I’m so mad I was born too late to listen to him in his prime.
Since 1962!!!!

I was trying to get my 12 year old niece and 10 year old nephew into dylan and they said that he sang to fast,so I played this and sang along word for word. Now they have changed their minds. Got them hooked and also with Kate bush.
OMG!!! Two of my all time favorites: Dylan, Kate Bush!!! Throw in Lennon, my first musical love, and that would be three for three!!!
Bob Dylan is in my opinion (and many others) the best American song writer in history. We are so lucky to still have him with us to this day. Thanks for all your music man! Much love to you brother!
