I was introduced to Bob Dylan in 1975 with the Blood on The Tracks Album. I was 17, and I fell in love with songs. He got me through my most devastating break up. lol. Thanks Mr Dylan. You can never die.
I grew up on it, a summer of love product. Dad was a guitar playing hippie so the music was the soundtrack to my childhood. I knew words to Dylan songs before I knew who Dylan was or even what the songs were named. Heavy doses of Bob, Neil. Beatles, Stones, Floyd, Zeppelin, the Dead, etc etc. A lot of great music and much of it has stuck with me till this day.
When a song becomes a timeless anthem for all of us who have had to deal with the predatory, marginal/zero conscience disordered characters among us. Thank you, Bob Dylan. You are a living legend.

MrDallman - Agreed. See, as a fan of Bob Dylan in the late 70's, I drove to New York City to poke around Greenwich Village - just to capture 'that' experience. Did not find 'Cafe Wha' to stop into. But even then, I could still go home and put my treasured "Blonde On Blonde" LP on my turntable.

Of all the songs Dylan has written this one stands apart, and becomes more relevant with every year that passes. This speaks the plain truth no longer to just an individual but to the hypocrisy of the society in which we live. How many people today claim to have lost faith that they never had in the first place? And how many "just want to be on the side that's winning"?
Agree. He originally wrote the song as a response to the Folk Scene which had heavily criticized him, even turned their backs on him after his decision to go electric. His comments resonate now, given the self-interest generally prevalent in all western society today.

This is the best song of all time! The best put down EVER..." I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes. Then you'd know what a drag it is to see you." I've loved these lyrics since I very first heard them many years ago!
This is the perfect description of what it's like to deal with someone who has a narcissistic style of relating to people. Every verse describes how such people operate. Two primary motivations: cover up their deep, deep shame using charm and the appearance of human emotions they can't express with any depth: "You say I let you down/ You know it’s not like that/ If you’re so hurt/ Why then don’t you show it?" And they need supply of emotions or admiration to cover up their discomfort or emptiness they feel. It must come to be almost a feeling of panic, I'd guess, as they don't have other coping strategies other than to provoke conflict and cover up the negative to gain the admiration of acquaintances who haven't gotten close enough to experience the rage. Put, "You got a lot of nerve/ To say you are my friend/ When I was down/ You just stood there grinning" together with, "You got a lot of nerve/ To say you got a helping hand to lend/ You just want to be on/ The side that’s winning" ...I may be going through triggering events in my own life, huh? Cheers and Happy Birthday to Bob Dylan this week!

@@yacovlevi Of the other songs I've heard that told people off, this song is the most confrontational. It tells exactly what the offending person's actions were and how the protagonist feels about them. I especially like how it never devolves into name calling or insults. I also like that no time is wasted on a chorus. It's just relentless.
To me, this music in this song sounds like you are at a carnival, light and magical, at a joyous parade with lovely characters in a Disney cartoon, and the lyrics, the words that he sings are cold, hostile, filled with anger and disgust. A+, Bob. Hysterical. What a truly wonderful song.

@gloriapascoe2614 I understand, Dylan sucks ! That's my opinion and people have the right to express it. Saying people are ignorant because they don't like the same things you do, that's truly ignorant
The lyrics are so powerful. For many people, it's so easy to pretend to be a friend, and it's easy to be one, but as for the latter, some people don't care.
Instantly takes me back to my college dorm in 1965, when the guy in the room next to me bought the 45 of this and played it on repeat forever. Awesome song and the last line continues to kill, 55 years later.
Truly a masterpiece that never gets old. One hundred years from now people will still be listening to this song and be in awe as to how relevant it is to the times that we are living in.
From Wikipedia: Joni Mitchell has cited the song as one of her biggest inspirations at the dawn of her career: "There came a point when I heard a Dylan song called 'Positively Fourth Street' and I thought 'oh my God, you can write about anything in songs'. It was like a revelation to me".

He sounds like a cat being castrated.
I feel the exact same way! Bob Dylan is the best!
Leonard Cohen too. It's a tie.
I also put Leonard Cohen high on the list of all-time great lyricists.
If you're under 30 and listening to this God Bless you!! You have excellent taste and you're keeping a great artist's legacy alive!!
Now im 32 but been listening to this stuff since i was a wee boy, mad this song was made the year my mum was born 😅😂
Iam 75 yes old listening from hospital Australia ❤
I’m a mistreated middle school girl, and my lord, this is the best song ever created.
I'm from Indy and many yrs ago I took my son to C this Iconic genius!! My son was sooooo impressed!! I was sooooo happy my son understood this man!! Once n a lifetime event for us!!! I agree, he's the best poet of our time! 60s was great!!!
Lyrics really hit me,,other day,,72,,,heard song many times,,, my favorite was everybody must get stoned
I was introduced to Bob Dylan in 1975 with the Blood on The Tracks Album. I was 17, and I fell in love with songs. He got me through my most devastating break up. lol. Thanks Mr Dylan. You can never die.
Same with me. Tangled up in blue does it for me, had a redheaded girlfriend that did me wrong.
Idiot wind. That's my favorite from blood on the tracks.
It wasn't until I REALLY listened to it. What a story he could tell.
Never gets old, only gets better. God spoke through this man, may he live long and prosper.
He has.
God = Bob. And that’s the Truf.
God's name must be..
Bob!
I really dig the organ here....Al Kooper perchance?
When a song becomes a timeless anthem for all of us who have had to deal with the predatory, marginal/zero conscience disordered characters among us.
Thank you, Bob Dylan.
You are a living legend.
exactly
Beautifully said ,
This song makes me cry & I get chills . What a legend .❤️🙏😢

Karma, baby.
I experienced Bob Dylan' s genius at Gerdes Folk City on 4th street in 1963.. one of my greatest memories of my life Happy 80th Birthday Bob Dylan
I am incredibly jealous! What a time (and place) to be alive!!
Fourth Street in Hibbing, Minnesota?
82 in may bless you big man 🎸🏴😎
" I wish that for just one time, you could stand inside my shoes" says it all.
Wow, what an opening line for a song " you got a lot of nerve to say you are my friend".....Dylan didn't send mixed messages. Just got right to it.
The most honest song I've ever heard in my life.
I'm 60, a widower, and my God in Heaven has blessed this sinner with a poet named Bob Dylan. His words have given me comfort over the years. I'm proud to have raised our daughter with his poetry. This world has been made just a little bit better for Mr. Dylan
Thank you for eloquently sharing your experience with Mr. Dylan's music. Good health to you.
This song always makes me smile from a compositional perspective. It never delivers that chorus, and it always feels like it's right around the corner.
I think this is the smartest observation on this thread. You nailed it.
It feels like it fits the "Fuck You" nature of the song.
yes!
Weird that a fuck you song with no chorus was one of Dylan's biggest hits
This isn't a song it's a statement to music thats why there no chorus nothing conventional about how he was feeling or writing this at the time
There will never be another , that’s for sure.
Sad but true,my friend, sad but true..
The one and only
💚💚💚
MrDallman - Agreed. See, as a fan of Bob Dylan in the late 70's, I drove to New York City to poke around Greenwich Village - just to capture 'that' experience. Did not find 'Cafe Wha' to stop into. But even then, I could still go home and put my treasured "Blonde On Blonde" LP on my turntable.
@@aliasdyln33 what a great experience you had , can’t think of too many other artists that have had the effect on the world of music , poetry and art as our Bob .
Stay safe my friend ....from West Sussex UK.
In a league all of his own. This is a timeless song. Thank you Bob Dylan
.
More like a universe ✌
Of all the songs Dylan has written this one stands apart, and becomes more relevant with every year that passes. This speaks the plain truth no longer to just an individual but to the hypocrisy of the society in which we live. How many people today claim to have lost faith that they never had in the first place? And how many "just want to be on the side that's winning"?
Great analysis, and I agree!
Agree. He originally wrote the song as a response to the Folk Scene which had heavily criticized him, even turned their backs on him after his decision to go electric. His comments resonate now, given the self-interest generally prevalent in all western society today.
You are right, it is unique. It is pure, unadulterated and direct. Yet, most of his songs are sort of leaning towards critical thinking.
"Masters of War" does too.
@@kenbellchambers4577 his mind is AMAZING- mostly b/c he had the courage to express it.
Some old poets did the same...
They were shunned, as well.
It's amazing.
My big sister bought this seven single when I was13 in 1968. I knew the words off by heart, but it took me 55 years to truly understand them.
Am similar age Mike ,,,,, me & my Bestie's Tune ,,,, still comin to terms with him not being here & understanding the lyrics of the Tune '' The Best Record of All Time ''
Born 1954 too. The soundtrack of our lives.
"Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
. You'd know what a drag it is to see you."
One of the best lines ever.
How many times have you felt. . . oh yeah.
If any one out there thinks, as I do, that Mr. Zimmerman's tune touches -- with plenty of emotional power -- on one or more relationships gone wrong in your life, feel free to submit a LIKE.
I’m glad to see that someone got his real name right. He hails from Duluth, Minnesota

The best "xxxx you" song of all time!
This is the best song of all time! The best put down EVER..." I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes. Then you'd know what a drag it is to see you." I've loved these lyrics since I very first heard them many years ago!
Same. And my favourite lines too 💕🎸👍
This is the perfect description of what it's like to deal with someone who has a narcissistic style of relating to people. Put, "You got a lot of nerve/ To say you are my friend/ When I was down/ You just stood there grinning" together with, "You got a lot of nerve/ To say you got a helping hand to lend/ You just want to be on/ The side that’s winning"
...I may be going through triggering events in my own life, huh?
Cheers and Happy Birthday to Bob Dylan this week!

@@Humbleye Ever since I first heard those lines, I was like BURN!!! Lol
Plan to have this played at my funeral and dedicate it to some of my relatives. Dylan described them perfectly.
Right on.
I dedicate this song to the entire world.
I dedicate this to the woman I married.
Unfortunately we all have them and they are all cut with the same knife. Peace Dublin Ireland 😜😜😜😜
Love it
So deep and meaningful. I knew exactly what he meant. Every word made sense. You get it or you don’t.
The first ever single I bought, worth every penny! Over sixty years later it is stll the most honest words I have ever heard.
I agree 100%. In this song most everybody can identify with what he is saying and how he is feeling based on their own life experiences. But nobody can express that as poetically and musically like Bob does. He is truly one of a kind and the best at what he does!
"Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you" this verse is one of the best that has ever come across to this day..
Agreed, Navin. One of the best put-downs I’ve ever run across! Cheers!
1968......would put on the headphones, sit on the floor and line up 6 open beers on the coffee table and listen to Bob all night. What great years. Wish I could go back. Peace brothers.
Best "Go to Hell" song ever written
Had a wealthy highscool girlfriend in the 60s she broke up with me i smiled and had this song playing in my head confused the hell out of her
What do you mean by "best"?
@@yacovlevi Of the other songs I've heard that told people off, this song is the most confrontational. It tells exactly what the offending person's actions were and how the protagonist feels about them. I especially like how it never devolves into name calling or insults. I also like that no time is wasted on a chorus. It's just relentless.
@@deninetate But Dylan said his songs mean nothing. He said they had no meaning.
@@caioaugusto4285 How do you know?
Masterpiece in terms of the lyrics, the melody, the arrangement -- on every level, in my book.
Thank you. Just for agreeing with me x
No one writes better lyrics on pop records than Bob that’s for sure. Sometimes it approaches poetry. It makes up for the music sometimes .
I was in my 20s when I discovered Bob Dylan & now I am 60 . I love his songs...
The words of this song do a brilliant job of describing a person who's done everything in their power to hurt you.
I would love to know who made him so "pissed off". Incredible and educated lyrics!!
I think the person in Question may have been Joan Baez!🤔
@@puestocero it could be just a composite rather than one person I guess.
Bob is living a long life now he is over 80. Wow where did all the time go.
It's a fascinating song. You have the uplifting tune, all major chords, but the sardonic biting lyrics. It's an interesting combination!
I so so agree ❤
The bod next door played it nonstop. That was 60 years ago. And I am still doing it. My favourite track of all time
To me, this music in this song sounds like you are at a carnival, light and magical, at a joyous parade with lovely characters in a Disney cartoon, and the lyrics, the words that he sings are cold, hostile, filled with anger and disgust. A+, Bob.
Hysterical. What a truly wonderful song.
I appreciate your insight. ty
@Captain slow Yeah, I agree. That is why the song is so fun to listen to; it is a funny, ironic musical masterpiece. Lol.
Another of Bob's songs that qualifies for the Nobel Prize in poetry. Many of the comments below have much personal meaning to me and all of his followers - thanks to everyone who posted.
Like the way Bob Dylan gets his message across without screaming and yelling. Subtle sarcasm.
This was my “revenge” song as a kid. I didn’t fight I just listened to this and felt better. I was very quiet in school. I got criticized for loving his music over other music. At 10 years old it dawn on me - > I knew he was a great artist and expressed what I was thinking… in many of his songs. Happy Birthday to you Bob! It’s been a great pleasure to have seen you in concert several times besides having all of your works in my home. ❤️❤️❤️
thank you too.
I was a fan at age 6 in 1965...none of my friends even knew of him. My love affair has been going almost 60 years now xxx
I'm glad you didn't let people dictate what music you should listen to.
75 yrs old and love Dylan have since teens. Only the ignorant would criticise you. Obviously they were not intelligent enough to understand
@gloriapascoe2614 I understand, Dylan sucks ! That's my opinion and people have the right to express it. Saying people are ignorant because they don't like the same things you do, that's truly ignorant
One of the greatest songs of all time
"Masters of War" is great too...and should be sung more now.
That last line isn't a lyric, it's therapy!
The lyrics are so powerful. For many people, it's so easy to pretend to be a friend, and it's easy to be one, but as for the latter, some people don't care.
More like, it's easy to pretend but hard to be a friend.
Bob certainly wasn’t a friend to many since he infected them with AIDS
You got a lot of nerve…
Instantly takes me back to my college dorm in 1965, when the guy in the room next to me bought the 45 of this and played it on repeat forever. Awesome song and the last line continues to kill, 55 years later.
we used to blast from the dorm "Stuck Inside Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again" because we were in MOBILE, ALABAMA.
For ALL generations - Learn from it, live it and feel it in your soul!
Bob has said he loves hearing young people playing his songs, he wants his songs to live on!

You got a lot of nerve.
Heard the song as a kid and it was such a revelation, to me, as a love/hate song - to have such mixed feelings for maybe an ex. Absolutely scathing words but a tinge of genuine sentimentality ("heartbreaks you embrace / If I was a master thief..") Gorgeous and sad. I know what that feels like more deeply now.

The cover of that album is so epic. Bob's voice never sounded young and never gets old.
