As a Mexican, living in Mexico, one who has traveled around Mexico a lot. I always wondered why everytime they were in Mexico, it looked terrible. Like not only the filters, but it always seemed like they found some backwater town to film in. Like I have even traveled to a lot of towns, and they are never like what they show in Hollywood.
I then, found it hillarious when I heard that several Hollywood movies have been shot in Mexico, pretending to be in Europe. Of course in those movies, they show the good side of Mexico.

Mainly because of the stories being told by those films or shows. The Wire is focused on the crime ridden streets of Baltimore, so naturally they're not going to show the beautiful landscapes of Colorado. Breaking Bad is focused on the grimey drug world that is influenced by Mexican cartels and so they show destitute regions in Mexico which are prey to cartel control due to their isolation. If there was some filmaker that wanted to show the beauty of Guadalajara or Campeche they would do so.

@@AllThingsFilm1 You've peaked my interest. I'd like to get a clear declaration from a variety of news media sources as to what kinds of processing was used. I'd like to see it in a manner similar to photography magazines, particularly the scientific ones, in which there's this small technical caption that declares the camera, the lens, the f-stop, and the shutter speed, as well as any special filters that were used. You ask for examples, and I want some too. But, it would be nice if the details are open for discussion, rather then leaving people to make blind speculation. I’m originally Greek, and all movies about ancient Greece are showing Greece as a barren place with no trees. While some islands look like that (which is where Americans go for vacations and so are familiar with them), most of the myths take place in mainland Greece, that HAS trees and it’s a quite green place. Also, the light in the Mediterranean is different than anywhere else (films actually shot there look different due to the light, but most films about Greece are not filmed anywhere near Greece).
Having said all that just as observation, I don’t really care. This is yet one more reason for people to be worked up about nothing. Others don’t have power over me (so I don’t feel offended by stereotyping personally). They’re free to understand the world anyway they like, be it accurate or not.

From a country that loves the color and is one of its characteristics even in the art, it's so stupid use a brown/sepia filter for Mexico ! And who says that all Mexico is warm all the year?

They do that with India also a country/culture like Mexico known for vibrant colors but Hollywood makes it look drab and dusty. It figures a country like the US with beige or gray cookie cutter like box buildings doing this.

I noticed similar kind of filter for Russia. Before i used see those in memes and laugh at it. But when i saw The Americans starring Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell where they have portrayed all the scenes set in the 80s Soviet Union with blue filter that's where i noticed how Americans stereotype other countries with color.

I agree how the color filters used to depict those countries are BS, but in the end the freedom of the artist to make the art (movies in this case) as how he pleases should always be maintained

As a Mexican I find this funnier than offensive, specially when they hire American actors to play native speakers and their accent is good enough to pass as Mexican but their grammar and vocabulary is all weird. Also everybody seems to be a hard working hot girl and their poor family or a narco (bonus points if they are in full cholo gear). I am starting to think it's some kind of a fetish (not judging).

It's not only the colors, but the locations
Sometimes it's appropriate to set the story in a shitty location because it makes sense, but it never feels as if it were a rarity and not common occurrence in that country
Maybe it's because they present it as "third world country" and not "specific area, country" like they do in stories set in USA
