It's really rare for non American films to win an oscar. For example, Disney films every year get nominated, they're good, but studio ghibli and many others that are arguably better either don't win or get nominated in the first place.
@@faustinuskaryadi6610 But asians arent asian Americans, so for asians America to watch asians TV to want a asian American main role isnt possible.. We are full blooded Americans and deserve the same respect as white ppl in America. This is our country grown and raised. Why can't whites just watch TV in Europe than. Wait i forgot, majority of them can't speak French, German, nor Romanian. Same with asian Americans, just cuz they are asians doesnt mean they automatically know Japanese, Korean, Chinese. Asian Americans arent foreginers in their homeland America , for majority of asians American this is their home. Why would any of us need to watch asian TV if we arent asian and we want our asian American representation on TV?
Gavino Suarez Ever thought why a white man is filling the role for a Japanese character? How can you argue that it’s not racially motivated, when race is considered in the first place?
+Horace Galaxi it really doesn't matter that he was technically an alien, the movie basically stripped the original of any asian influence and basically made it into a generic disney movie where some high schooler gets super powers and has to save the world.
Flap Jackson That's the whole point of my comment, the problem isn't just him being white, its the whole story being white as if DBZ had sex with saved by the bell.
No, because that’s Asian cinema made in Asian countries for people that live there. There are no such things as “white” movies. Just movies in America. And there are ALL types of people in America
The problem is that there aren't enough Asian roles. And in those rare ones available, Asian actors still have to compete against their non-Asian counterparts to get them.
What makes it even worse is that no Japanese women were allowed to read for the part either, it was open only for white women, just like the hunger games.
Katniss lives in District 12, also known as the Appalachia region of West Virginia. If we assume that the ethnic demographics of the futuristic Appalachia reflect District 12 demographics, maybe we can guess at Katniss' racial background. According to the Census Board, White persons make up 93.9% of West Virginia (compared to the national 72..4%). So, the odds are pretty overwhelming that Katniss is a white person (of indeterminable origin). Still, she could be in the remaining 4.1%! (Note that people of African descent constitute 3% of that 4.1%.)[3] If we make the very shaky assumption that District 12's racial demographics mirror modern demographics, the odds weigh heavily on Katniss being of Caucasian origin. Of course, Caucasians can come from North Africa, Middle East and some parts of Asia as well as Europe. www.quora.com/Is-Katniss-Everdeen-a-woman-of-color (get sourced)
Asian actors, Black actors, Latino actors - They are just as equally talented as white actors. The industry does not care about that though, they just want big-name white actors to sell their movies. The only beef here is that minority actors are not given a fair shot or even considered when in comes to casting decisions. That's what needs to change. Hollywood says the public will not see a movie with a non white actor lead, and as a consumer, I feel that's a bunch of crap. Give us a good movie and I promise you the masses will see it, regardless.
+Chilpoctli Sometimes it goes the other way, though. Oscar Issac, who is Guatemalan, was cast as English King John in Ridley Scott's Robin Hood. Just saying
+Gumaro R. Villamil +Gumaro R. Villamil OK yes in that instance it did go the other way but if you think that makes it even, I'm sorry but no. Please find me another movie where that happens, and if you have to Google it then that only furthers my point. Look dude, I'm not here to argue the morality of yellow-face or white-face or whatever. I have my opinion, you have yours and I'm sure nothing we say to each other is gonna change that. I'm just stating a fact, that when it comes to Western main stream media, there's a disproportionate amount of minority actors to white. That's a fact. I bet most people would struggle to name 10 Asian actors, 15 Latino, or 20 Black but have no problem naming 50 white actors.
+Gumaro R. Villamil Oscar Issac is half Guatemalan, his father is Cuban. He's still Caucasian, Hispanic yes, but Hispanic isn't a race, it's an ethnicity and Oscar is fairly light skin man
To be fair, he has claimed in many interviews and stand ups on how proud he is to be part filipino. Comparison to him in Chuck and Larry isnt the best, but his portrayal in Big Daddy and 50 first dates is the closest to representing a filipino than any white actor.
Same with black women. For some reason people are fine with casting dark skinned black men but a dark skinned black woman with afro texture hair are never chosen. And if she is, she is put at the butt of numerous racist jokes.
+tigana - the one-drop fuckery is behind that though. If all it takes is one drop to make someone black, then all Hollywood has to do is cast the lightest most racially ambiguous person they can find, put them in the black-female character role and tick off the diversity quota because black people in America accept anything as black anyway.
Honestly, they're creating more problems for themselves and the future of Hollywood by not casting Asians. Hollywood could cast more big-name Asians actors for different movies, if they would just cast some Asians for big movie roles.
I agree! And nowadays the Asian film market is growing larger and larger, so there are plenty of actors to choose from. Not to mention the support that the film will gain if they cast an Asian actor for a great role!
Henrique Martins There was "labor reform" and "labor education", the labor reform is just like what i said, criminals will work while they are in the jail, they get commutation and wages, and the "labor education" is a bit different, it's actually not counted as going in to the jail, it's a lighter punishment than being jailed, designed for those who committed crime but not bad enough to going in to the jail, mostly teenagers, their labor job in the jail is just for correcting their bad attitudes, this kinds of detention (in China this is like going in to jail but not that bad) was canceled at 2013, so teenagers no longer going in to a children jail nowadays
sure, go ahead and cast ppl of other race for a role. But don't give them "asian" makeups or "asian heritage" in the movie! Is it that hard to understand?
@@007Fusiion No, I think what Kaitlyn meant was reconfigure the story to fit a a non-asian ( presumably American) character. So the character is no longer asian and their stories are remodeled and tweaked to fit their western persona... Now I agree it's not possible with every story being told in Hollywood, but the ones that are purely fiction can have this, like they did with Jessica Alba's ' the eye' sort of...
@@violettaschmieder2096 Asians are pretty public, I mean you can't really forget that they exist. Most directors are white and for some of them, it might be easier to write a white character (I actually do this when I roleplay in MMOs) because they're familiar. I think that there's a broad range of Asian talent and that it's actual yellowface when they aren't cast for Asian parts, but if the director's vision is somehow changed by the character being Asian then I think it is right to change the nationality of the character.
I feel like Cloud Atlas was justified because it's about the characters being reincarnated. Halle Berry becomes a white Jewish woman, Doona Bae becomes a Mexican lady, Hugh Grant is a Hawaiian cannibal from the future, etc. The make up was reasonably convincing.
I agree the whole point of Cloud Atalas os that was the souls of the individual characters re-incarnating along a specific time line and the best way to show that is by having the same people playing them
+Noah Vickers I feel iffy about the actors playing other races, it's just weird. I think it would have been great if the characters were played by other actors every time they reincarnate.
+Noah Vickers What about the several raunchy-type comedies whose characters weren't even meant to be taken seriously? Or the commercial with Ashton Kutcher which was similarly cast in a totally joking manner?
As an Asian person, I'd say living in Canada, there isn't much direct racism, although never seeing Asians in main roles kinda makes me feel like I'm not supposed to be a main character in the world. So thank you Vox for speaking up about this!
Tay Maree I think that in Canada or America in general, people are already more aware that there are many races and ethnicities who live there than in "Asia" (at least in S.Korea). There is also a big difference between S.K and Canada in terms of mixed populations, it's not really comparable
But it's not as bad as in the US... Canadian shows have more Asian characters in shows and movies. I agree leads aren't really given to Asians. But look at shows like Kim's Convenience, and Second Jen. I remember seeing Asian characters in Katts and Dog, and Danger Bay where they didn't play stereotypical characters.... They played marine biologist and a cop. These were old shows decades ago. In film, Double Happiness with Sandra Oh which basically launched her career into a Gray's Anatomy, Arli$$, etc. So I think Canada showed more Asian representation earlier than America who weren't portrayed as waiters, restaurant and laundromat owners, gang members or martial artists. The only American show that had a positive Asian actor was George Takei's character in Star Trek. Huge Chinese and Asian in news ie. Andrew Chang (CBC), Mutsumi Takehashi (CTV Montréal - she's been there for decades!), and I'm sure there's more whether it be on national or regional newscasts. Personally, I think Canada is more progressive than the US in many respects. Remember, we pride ourselves on multiculturalism. Even South Asians like Ian Hanomansing, Camille Ross, etc are main anchors and hosts.
Call me a special snowflake or a triggered liberal but this is true: Representation Matters. When I was little I rarely saw any asian characters in books or movies. (except for mulan) I started wishing In was white from the age of FOUR. i remember dressing up as a cinderella and wearing a yellow scarf on my head for “blonde” hair and wishing i could just disappear into that character. not because theatrical reasons (i have not acting talent whatsoever) but because i just wished I wasn’t chinese. i felt different, less valued, and less beautiful from everyone else. by the way, I am not exaggerating at all. as a child I always had a big imagination and in my daydreams i was always white. i never thought of it as a problem until many years later looking back. I hated being chinese almost up until middle school. yeah, the push of asian american representation seems so microscopic in the midst of things but this could make many little asian american kids happier and prouder of their beautiful ethnic background. at least it would’ve helped mini me. sorry for this little rant with horrible capitalization i just needed to get it off my chest:)
Gabby I feel you. Western movies and shows filled the television slots for my dad and mom when I was a kid, at the age of 3 or 4 I wondered why I wasn’t born in America. When the ABC comedy series Fresh Off The Boat came out, I was so happy to see an Asian American family acting just the same way as my family did, but on TV. Representation DOES matter.
Gabby Same. Being raised Asian-American is scary. I wasn't familiar with people or, famous celeberties "like me". I thought I was a outcast as a kid since when I pretended to be a superhero or a celeberity they would mock me with gibberish and stretch their eyes
Vi Le lmfao white people wont understand. They don’t feel like they don’t belong because of their race. I use to have such an inferiority complex because whenever Asians were on tv it was to mock them.
I mean some people can read it as a misspelling of grow up. In some Asian accents the R sound is replaced with an L and vice versa. So grow would turn into glow.
@I'm Jack's Nipples Except the white barely make a minor dent in the population, and I don't know which of these Asian made movies you talked about, but even back when Bruce Lee was alive and was treated poorly by Hollywood (ran by overwhelmingly, if not all white people) but even his Chinese made movies allowed white and black actors in it, at a time when racism and bigotry was prevalent in America. And almost always when Asian creates films and movies it's usually based around their cultures, and the people of said cultures.
It goes to show you that nonwhites still gotta fight for opportunity in this country. And when issues like this relating to minorities struggle, right wingers, including the same ethnic people in that group, tries to put it down claiming it's not a problem or the problem is too little to even thought about. But when white right wingers sees nonwhites playing a role in Hollywood movies all of a sudden it's a problem that's gotta be said.
and don't forget 2 things: -Michael Bay's Transformers is better than DB Evolution, so -All of you need to woke up & accept that Hollywood actually Support "Anime is Satan" movement
+Errold Tumaque I feel like, and I try to not bring emotions into this but they're kind of relevant, that people are getting upset with the fact that the 'reporting' leaves quite a bit to be desired. They're making the issue about race, thus, some feel that it implies racism towards whites because it actually is racist to tell a specific race 'hey, you can't do that because you're [specific race]'. That leads to the fighting in the comments etc etc. The real issue, in my opinion, is that not everything is being considered. By this I mean that Vox is postulating that race alone is the reason why an actor can not be cast as another race not their own, rather than something reasonable such as they have better skills or chemistry for the project they are working on. While they do have a point in the fact that there is some misrepresentation that is not what should be the main point, the idea that skills>race should be the main point. Sorry for rambling, it's a very complex subject and it takes a lot of thought to fully wrap one's head around it. tl;dr: Misrepresentation should be the main focus, not the race of the individual vs the race of another, i.e. making it about race usually leads to racism in itself.
If you were born in Japan, it means you lived your childhood in a homogenous society --- Asian people everywhere, representation 100%. To Asian-Americans who were born in the United States, though, this matters so, so much. They're rarely given a voice. Please view it from their perspective.
It's the whole "Asians are only foreigners" myth that gets projected in film and television that is very damaging imo. You are right too. There are many many Asian-Americans born and raised here. Yet people always treat them like they are foreigners from "somewhere else" and are viewed with disdain from the "locals" in some places. Sad :(
I was born and raised in nyc where there was a lot of diversity in cultures so I don’t fully understand. However, when I visited Oregon, there wasn’t a handful of Asian there so it felt like they treated us as foreigners
Vox has another video called "The myth of race, debunked in 3 minutes" claiming that "race isn't real." So, how can they make this video? Hypocrites! It's called acting. Get over it. There's plenty of white characters portrayed by non-white actors. It works both ways. And, according to your previous video, there's no way to prove that Emma Stone is not Asian. In Cloud Atlas, the movie mentioned in this video, Halle Barry plays a white woman in one of the sequences. The whole point of that movie was that you had a few actors each playing several different roles, many of different races, timelines, etc.
I mean, shouldn't happen none of them,I hope the spike Spiegel 's actor does a good job on the Netflix adaption of cowboy bebop,I hope it is even a good thing and not straight up garbage.
I don't think Cloud atlas could be used as an example in this context. After all the movie did blackface, yellowface and 'whiteface' and a male actor portraying a female character. the whole main cast had multiple roles. The whole point of the story was the continuum between all the characters. In all the other movies i find it actually disgusting how they whitewash many fictional characters and then cast white actors, as if it would somehow be a bad thing to be anything other than white...
True true but at least the other "faces" didn't look like aliens. When I was watching that movie, I didn't realize that they were human for a few minutes.
Well said. At first viewing I wondered if that particular timeline was a time when society considered looking "Korean" to be the desirable norm - even to the extent of having/being forced to have (shitty) plastic surgery. Like some kind of meta commentary. But that doesn't hold up with regards to the continuum-theory.
nutcracker when ppl think asia they think china and japan while the philippines gets constantly passed over- to american born filipinos (like me) they feel invisible and often feel distanced from their culture
nutcracker that’s perfectly valid, and that’s your own experience. but a lot of other filipino-americans (especially those who don’t live in an area with a lot of asian-americans like me) feel this way, which is why some get astonished when their own ethnicity is acknowledged
Why can't hollywood just accurately cast people? It's not that hard to get a Japanese actor who could do the role just as good as a white woman. It's like a pattern in behavior.
In Asia, we don't paint Asian white to play white character, we just hire one. Only one exception, when the character is Jesus, we hire Korean to play him.
That’s not true, in Japan whenever they adapt a movie from a novel or anime or there’s a comercial and the characters are western they still hire Asian actors and they even use white/black/latino stereotypes and racist jokes sometimes and I don’t see anyone giving a bat about that Not only japan but I’ve seen China and other Asian countries do this too
Did you all not watch Cloud Atlas or did you just not understand it? The same souls are being reincarnated in different genders and different races, any of the Korean parts who were not reincarnations of characters seen earlier would have gone to Koreans. Halle Berry, for example, was incarnated as a white person at one point. If anything that film played with and questioned the way Hollywood casts people. All that went right over your heads! I think the message that souls don't have a race was wonderful, and you had to spit on that! There was also the suggestion that souls did possibly have a gender, and with a transgender writer and director you can see how the theme would resonate and be taken seriously.
+Rachel Cho An example is an example; The fact that it's 1 in so many, doesn't change the fact that it's still a thing. Yellowface is only a small percentage of all movies, but that doesn't make it any less of an issue.
YaBoiMou Here's a little list you can go through that I posted in a comment. All of these western movies, plus a lot more have been remade in Asia with Asian casts. "The remains of the Day", "A Few Good Men", "Sideways", Breaking Away", "When Harry met Sally", "Entourage", "Only You", "Primal Fear", "I Know what you did last Summer", "West Side Story", "The Good Wife", "Philadelphia", "It happened one Night", "Cellular", "Unforgiven", "Ghost", "It", "On the Waterfront", "Le Diner De Cons", "Knight and Day", "Lost", "Gone Girl", "The Miracle Worker", "Cold Case", "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", "Ugly Betty", "Overboard", "U-Turn", "Reservoir Dogs", "Mrs. Doubtfire", "The Godfather", "The Silence of the Lambs", "A Kiss before Dying", "Kramer Vs Kramer", "12 Angry Men", "Chinatown", "Cavité", "What women Want", "Blood Simple", "A Nightmare on Elm Street" etc etc etc. I was even made aware there is a Nigerian remake of Titanic out there somewhere...
I love that Hollywood pretends to be "diverse" and "inclusive" but when they do, it's just stereotypes, caricatures and black people. No offence to black people but blackwashing characters is not how one does diversity.
L should be the palest most disgusting human being who hasn't showered in months, since he's literally a walking brain, his body is just there. Black L looks ways to clean, you just don't get the sense that this guy literally spends all this time indoors infront of a pc.
kuro neko I’m okay with subtle representation but most representation in the media is “HEY IM BLACK what’s your name? My names black guy I’m black did you know I’m black it’s pretty hard to be black you know I know cause I’m black.”
And its not only in hollywood too, we were playing this play for a theatre and there was a Chinese actress better than ANYONE in there and yet she didn't get picked, but the ones who did were all white
RawVegan PeacefulGoddess they don't often look white though. Just because their features are not particularly Asian, doesn't mean they are white. Also many anime series are not set in Japan (FMA, attack on Titan etc.).
RawVegan PeacefulGoddess i don't think anybody will say that most anime characters are asian, the characters were made to be different from them, so it would not be normal and boring
it's actually honestly such a big issue, and so many people are not taking it as so. And it hurts; it's sad, and insulting to Not be considered as an equal to white and black races - to be unknowingly unfairly treated, and blamed when even such an idea of asian racism is suggested. Asian racism is honestly such a real thing - for the Indians, to the Chinese, to the Philippians, and to every other asian race there is. It may not be the things like lower wages or unfair law (actually, it could be as well), but it's certainly dehumanizing and hurtful to hear others using asian jokes without thinking twice about it. It is dehumanizing to hear whatever the next untrue stereotype is, and actually seeing people believe it. and what is worse is that a lot of people see it as a normal thing, asian racism; little people would think asian racism is a big deal. And what is such a big thing as well is that Asian slavery is not so much as even mentioned in most textbooks, and most people - including asian descendants themselves - do not even know about the slavery. The poverty in china the past few years is rarely talked about as well. I am certainly not lessening the concern of other racisms or problems of other races - every racism, and poverty, and prejudice and inequality are all just as terrible, and important and big of an issue. JUST to be clear, I am not complaining. I truly believe and want to see a world without inequality and prejudice in all its form, for all the races and genders, and sexualities. please just consider this.
Fanfiction Scrutinizer no, the whole comment was about equality for all. That's why they mentioned gender and sexuality. They were making a broad overview that this video covers, which is racism and inequality in general.
Brenda L you aren't viewed any different from the blacks. You guys understand us... we both been though things in the past. You guys know how it is. We're all the same bc we know how it is to be treated different just bc of the color of your skin
I don't think cloud atlas should be included. Both the Korean and black actors were put in whiteface for the movie. All the main actors went through race transformations.
Totally agree here. The who point of that story was to show the reincarnations of the same people in the differing roles, races, and stories. It was essential and integral to the story. No was was pretending to be any single race but more acting as a single multiracial entity. Boo, on you Vox. That movie was the exception and you know it.
As an Asian, I'm really happy that in recent years we've been getting more *ACTUAL* representation. In the last 3 years, we've seen 2 Asian-directed films win Best Picture, a Marvel movie with an Asian MC, the first Asian to win Best Actress and the explosive popularity of Kpop. I'm glad that we can build a name for ourselves without having other races interfere and misrepresent us.
Cloud Atlas is not a good example, it was the point of the movie. All of the cast played different characters of different ethnicity, gender in different timeline. The korean girl seen in the scene with him had also played the role of a rich white woman a spanish lady. It's not a fair example
Mindy Park (The Martian) doesn't make much sense either. I believe Park is a common Korean name but no description of race is ever given with the character in the book. Funnily the explicit racial change they did make was Venket Kupur. He was an older Indian man and they replaced him with a younger black actor. I wonder why that wasn't mentioned.
This is a great video, with an important point. One small thing however - Tilda Swinton is not playing a Tibetan character. The production company couldn't sell the movie in China with a Tibetan character, so they changed the character to be Celtic. Tilda Swinton got cast to play a Celtic character. The film was hence sold in China.
@@w2385-i2s - you can’t have any characters that would seem as pro Tibet. Hence making a Tibetan character now white. The Chinese government would ban the whole film and probably subsequent films and even alot of Disney projects in their market. So oddly enough movie studios make choices that impact source material in order to be able to make a profit overseas. Take a look at Taskmaster in black widow, They had to change the costume because anything resembling a skull couldn’t be allowed in Chinese movie screens.
@@spidermancares why white? there are other Asian characters living with the Ancient One in Tibet. Did China complain about the Asian characters? It's Hollywood White washing. Hollywood could have use the other Asian actors in the movie as the Ancient One.
DigitalYojimbo All I know is that an Asian guy is never the hero in Hollywood. Big historical action adventure move set in ancient China? Write it for a white guy to save the day.
+Gmork Have you seen Cloud Atlas? one of its underlying themes was a criticism of racism, and you could argue it criticized yellowface and blackface. Halle Berry played a white woman in it, for example. This video was a very superficial review of a very serious problem that people take seriously. When people just vomit up a poorly researched video like this with such flippancy they discourage people from taking the point seriously! On the other hand, I'd say any of the down voters who didn't down vote it for being so shallow are probably just racists who think it's okay that most hollywood movies only have white actors and that of the top 15 cast there are never more than 3 women.
And until now most of western are people often mistaken about Asian and tend to generalize them, like for example in Anaconda that took place in Borneo, Indonesia, there's an Indonesian character called Tran (that name doesn't exist in Indonesia, it's Vietnamese name) and played by American Korean actor, it's a kind of generalization of Asian, but fortunately he pronounced some Indonesian words well.
Omg I'm laughing at this irony 😂 they think black people in hollywood had it worst. oh no they don't. They forgot that diversity is also including asian people.
Generalizations are terrible but I don' t think characters need to be played by the nationality they're supposed to be if someone from a different nationality can give a better perfomance. There are French actors that played American characters or Americans that play British characters.
@@TimLimDimSims Filipinos, Indonesians, Malaysians, and basically Southeast Asia belong in a group called Malay. Yes, we kind of differ from Northeast Asians thats because we mixed with other indegenous groups in our areas.
This is so angering. Hollywood was built to essentially be white people congratulating other white people on their talents to be watched by other white people. They were even going to try and whitewash a live-action version of Mulan but everyone was pissed. Me included. The whole movie is based on Chinese culture and a sense of duty and honour prevalent in Asian households so whitewashing that would be distracting, confusing and extremely distasteful in the kindest words. I didn’t even bother watching the movie with Emma Stone cause I realised this was the biggest bull, as if they don’t have any other roles to take?? Seriously?? Take someone else’s idea and don’t even stay true to the character and their identity!
The creator of ghost in the shell approved it. m.ign.com/articles/2017/03/21/original-ghost-in-the-shell-director-mamoru-oshii-has-no-problem-with-live-action-remake
I highly doubt Hollywood is built around racist white people. You making all of these accusations are a little hypocritical, don't you think? You're saying Hollywood is white people congratulating white people and being watched by white people. Pretty racist to me if I'm going to be honest. If you haven't noticed, there is a lot more diversity in actors nowadays in terms of gender, sexual orientation and race than there was in previous decades. We're making progress, but I don't think you understand how talent works. There are talented people of colour in the film industry and a lot of them are absolutely fantastic to watch, but they're talented. We can't have this equal diversity of people in a certain industry if there isn't an equal distribution of talent, you feel me? It's progressing, but currently it's just not the case lmao. About the whitewashing, I don't overly mind or find it too offensive unless it's too overboard like Ashton Kutcher was. It's not the fault of film companies to want to make money from their films and the best way they'll do that is to put a common famous celebrity in their film. They could hire an appropriate cast for each role according to their race in the film, but why does it matter so much? I mean it's obviously not to make fun of that race or discriminate against the race otherwise they wouldn't be making a serious film with a character of colour. It doesn't make sense to me why that might be offensive at all.
invalid example: cloud atlas keeps the actors between reincarnation through history. in the previous reincarnation the asian woman of the couple was wearing white face. the plot would have been much more confusing if it wasnt for the yellow face and the white face, as the recognizable character faces allow us to match who is the reincarnation of what.
Totally agree, cloud atlas couldn’t just have casted an actual Asian to play those roles. It had to be the same actors. They also casted Doona Bae for a major role and not a white actor
Jason React have you seen the film, it's about the clash of cultures and how they learn to coexist, the film wouldn't make sense if tom cruise's role was someone who was already from Japan.
I've seen it more than once in the past, and the title illustrated itself that it was last about the Last Samurais, that alone could have been a good reason for Hollywood depict the war between Samurais and their emperor till the end. But did they? no, and why would they? Hollywood has their own track record of poorly portraying Asians in their movies, and given Asian roles to white actors especially when it's based on real life stories. And the clash of cultures you speak of was Hollywood excuse of adding in someone white. I like Tom Cruise, but they could have given him the supportive role.
Jason React it's about alot more than just a war between samurai, it's how there was a clash of cultures and how Japan was becoming more westernised and the repercussions of that, one side of that being the fall of the samurai feudal system. While the film isnt historically accurate it is however based loosely on true events and people. I can't remember exactly but I do know Tom cruise's character is based on a French captain who actually fought alongside the samurai in the Meiji rebellion. The thing is at the end of the day this film is made for a western audience as entertainment. People want to be able to relate to the main characters so out of all the characters in this film to portray the main protagonist why not the westerner. If anything to be more historically accurate tom cruises role should have been that of a French captain, not an American one and the role played by a French actor you could say but then again who would an American in general want to be their avatar into this world of fantasy. When it comes to the last samurai people clutch at straws to say it's white washing. If you want to see hollywood white washing look up the 'asian' land lord in Breakfast at Tiffany's.
ikr? meanwhile if that mindset was shared in the academic world, affirmative action wouldn't exist. "the best actors get the job, race shouldn't matter" VS "it doesn't matter how good of a student you are, as long as your race meets the school quota, you'll be accepted". smh.
No the smiley face said you're salty, your opinion means nothing apparently. They should remove all acting colleges/classes and just hire random ethnic group people because that is a far superior system. Lol imagine going to the movies watching terrible actors all hazily thrown together based on their ethnic backgrounds, you'd probably think you were watching a home movie or some RUclips footage because of the poor acting, hey if your a minority race like me we could be a in a movie together acting terribly!
Im mongolian and when i found out Genghis Khan was cast as a non asian man i was not surprised and i was like 9 when i found out because hollywood always does this
Avatar: The Last Airbender the movie was an abomination and an utter disappointment, and it's not just due to the bizzare yellowface/brownface (of every main character! An Indian guy played Zuko???)
I understood the fire nation to be Japanese. earth nation yo be China. water nation to be inuit and the air nomads to be Tibetan. if you wanted to be very percise about racial consistant.
+gustavo pena +Skinnymarks I agree with Skinnymarks, however, East Asian looking actors would've made it a bit better for the nations other than the Water tribe and "doing justice" do the original series. Michail Highland hmmm... Ill just state what's going through my head There are three cultural references in the fire nation Pre Colombian Mexican Indian And Japanese Thoughts?
gustavo pena because the fire nation is a chain of islands next to the earth nation. Much like Japan is next to China. Also there is a lot of Japanese cultural immagery in the fire nation. Earth nation has a lot of China cultural immagery Water nation Inuit. And air nomads have a bit of a mix of Indian and Tibetan cultural immagery. Though to be fair Tibet and India did influance eachother religious and cultural features quite a bit.
Cloud Atlas is a poor example. One of the purposes of using the same actors throughout the film was to provide story line continuity, not because they didn't want to hire other actors. It's a movie that hasn't engaged in whitewashing. Not sure why it was brought up; you had hundreds of other examples at your disposable.
Agreed, its similar to just looking at the trailer of the movie without having actually watched it. The Great Wall with Matt Damon is also quite controversial too but actually I believe the Chinese funded it to promote Chinese culture and used Matt Damon because he was a big name and could bring in sales. In a sense, Matt Damon is used as a trojan horse against American audiences because Hollywood felt it wouldn't be enough to have only Chinese actors in the film. That being said, I still agree with the majority of the video
It is and it isn't. It's just a weird example. The sound design behind Hugo Weaving messing with Tom Hanks as the devil was extremely good. Everything else was just weird.
You have to admit, though, when you see those white actors in that alien-ish makeup that's supposed to make them look Asian, it's startling and more than a little grotesque. I can easily see why people would find it offputting or offensive.
nobody knows another term for yellowface. its a widespread term many people know so that's what they used. the term itself is problematic in my opinion because it should be separated from blackface because they're different issues but also it only considers pale east asians but should really include south asians, south west asians, etc b/c they're brown they don't have yellow undertones
Well, i mean its animation, alot of anime characters dont look particularly 1 race over another..... still doesnt mean that kusanagi couldnt have been asian....
@@MrEvldreamr The original director of the anime, Mamoru Oshii defended the casting of Scarlet many times. Saying that it is not a case of whitewashing since they are a cyborg, not to mention what I have mentioned before, they never imagined the character as specifically Asian.
RecoveringChristian that’s what I think too. And she’s a cyborg, not in her real body. Who knows what happens to her real one right? That’s what I think.
***** ...the hell? Perhaps I should explain it again. The whole point of the movie is that the same heroic qualities and ideals can appear in very different people from very different generations and cultures. That's why the same few actors play all these characters: despite appearing to be a different race on the outside they're all really the same on the inside. White actors play Asian characters, Asian actors play white characters, similar situation for black actors, and a man even plays a woman at one point. It's not racist. It's probably about the farthest you could possibly be from being racist, it's almost a deconstruction of the very concept of race.
Excuse me, Cloud Atlas has all the reasons for the actors to play an "asian role" EXACTLY because of the reincarnation, as all the actors throughout the movie play so many characters. Just like what you are claiming, you could say it's whitewashing when Doona Bae plays a white woman in one of the arcs. I don't disagree with the point of the video, just think this example was a very badly chosen one.
Representation does matter. I remember when I was little, I was surrounded with all these movies with no asian representation at all. I started wishing to be someone else, a different race. Now that I’m older, I’ve started to love myself because of kpop ngl. It made me love myself for myself.
I literally feel like crying just looking at all these examples of Asians being dismissed and pushed aside, even for a role of an Asian character. People may think it's a non-issue, but this hurts me on such a personal level. It's telling me that "people like me" aren't even good enough to play ourselves. It breaks my heart...
CLOUD ATLAS is such a maligned movie. It should not be taken at... Literally face value. You have to watch the movie to understand the underlying tone and message. Also, to understand why a character is depicted in different races makeup meant to illustrate reincarnation and karma.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't ghost in the shell not whitewashed? I thought that the point was that the "shell" was mass produced. And the race and identity change really gave major a disconnect. (I'm not very familiar with the anime, this is just a question)
I don't see it as whitewashed. Her soul/ghost is Japanese. + look at the rest of the cast, they could have easily filled the roles with white actors, they didn't.
ThatOneAsianBroChick So people can only be put in bodies identical to their original body? Seems to undermine the whole point. Anyway, no one’s soul was put anywhere - it’s a movie. If you object to what characters in the movie did take it up with them. But I’ve seen movie characters do worse things than put the wrong person in the wrong race’s body.
The movie is like taking the anime script to shredding machine, taking five pieces and making up all the rest. The only connection are visuals and the movie script is a terrible mess.
The irony of people who attack pieces like this for being "SJW" or "PC" is that they are clearly threatened by the opinion presented, yet criticize those making the argument as "oversensitive." Yet cast one or even "gasp" TWO Star Wars movies in a row with female and minority leads and those people immediately start complaining in the comment sections that it's the result of liberal SJW control of the film industry.
+Neal X I don't think it's as cut and dry as that. I think ordinary people who don't think about this stuff all day long have a hard time distinguishing between a good, relevant piece like this and hack opinion pieces. For example, the other day Vox posted a criticism of Kimmy Schmidt for Titus's yellow face play. It was a grossly unfair hot take that deliberately ignored the context of what Kimmy Schmidt is as a show and the style of commentary it does. There is a legitimate feeling that some elements of the media are using throaty opinion pieces to silence reasonable disagreements. Disagreements that aren't racist but maybe do want some objectivity in editorials. Often the motivations of new media companies like Vox, Buzzfeed, Mic, etc. aren't based in actually solving racial inequality, they're focused on stoking certain uncomfortable cultural differences to drive clicks. So my point is that there will of course be outrageously bigoted responses to a piece like this but they're not always based in pure racial hatred like it appears at first. And the more moderate disagreeable responses certainly aren't. Often it is just ordinary people who incorrectly judge this to be just another example of that editorial overreach. The culture of some of these companies (liberal and conservative) are often so uniform that a reasonable amount of debate doesn't happen at an editorial level. Often there is one opinion that is never challenged, and because these new media companies are overtaking old media like the NY Times, Washington Post, etc. as our main sources of news, a lot of normally moderate people get quite angry about the lack of balance and have reasonable fears about our right to disagree without being attacked. Balance doesn't necessarily mean letting Rush Limbaugh write a guest post, but it might mean keeping someone on staff who at least values the moderate opinion. I really think we as a culture have to stop labelling our opponents as outrightly bad just because they disagree with us. Their motivations aren't always what they first appear.
@Steffen Bodar in the current definition it is rascist. But if white people can only play white, asians play asians and so on, you're being racist twice: first you look at the race of the character and then you have to find an actor with the "right" race for the role which is racist.
Agree with everything except the Clout Atlas comment. That wasn't necessarily "yellow face." The story wasn't attempting to make Hugo Weaving an asian caricature or "white wash" that character. It was based on the premise that our soul moves from one body to another, and we are reincarnated again and again as different people, races, in different times and places.
+Chris M I know. I also felt like the Cloud Atlas comment was uncalled for.Plus the Asian actress was in "white face", if thats a thing, at the end of the movie how come that wasn't a problem? The premise of the movie was so that all the actors play their various reincarnation forms. I agree with everything else tho.
I think we gotta cut Cloud Atlas some slack though, that story was related to reincarnation and most of the cast had different versions of themselves from different times, but with a similar look.
Agree fully. CLOUD ATLAS is such a maligned movie. It should not be taken at... Literally face value. You have to watch the movie to understand the underlying tone and message. Also, to understand why a character is depicted in different races makeup meant to illustrate reincarnation and karma.
That's ok, but realize that these kind of characters are sometimes the only Indians people see in their life (especially in childhood, when many prejudices are formed).

none that I can recall but Katniss was supposed to be brown and they made her white.
(Note that people of African descent constitute 3% of that 4.1%.)[3]
If we make the very shaky assumption that District 12's racial demographics mirror modern demographics, the odds weigh heavily on Katniss being of Caucasian origin. Of course, Caucasians can come from North Africa, Middle East and some parts of Asia as well as Europe.

So thank you Vox for speaking up about this!
You clearly don't even understand his comment smh.
Tay Maree are you..... are you brain dead?
Tay Maree if it’s an ASIAN role, it should be played by an ASIAN actor. there is no need for a white person to play an Asian? it’s pretty offensive...

And almost always when Asian creates films and movies it's usually based around their cultures, and the people of said cultures.

I feel like, and I try to not bring emotions into this but they're kind of relevant, that people are getting upset with the fact that the 'reporting' leaves quite a bit to be desired.

There was also the suggestion that souls did possibly have a gender, and with a transgender writer and director you can see how the theme would resonate and be taken seriously.

it's actually honestly such a big issue, and so many people are not taking it as so.

An Asian actor played Wong. They could have done the same for The Ancient One.
Take a look at Taskmaster in black widow,
They had to change the costume because anything resembling a skull couldn’t be allowed in Chinese movie screens.

On the other hand, I'd say any of the down voters who didn't down vote it for being so shallow are probably just racists who think it's okay that most hollywood movies only have white actors and that of the top 15 cast there are never more than 3 women.
thisjerksaguy Ugh, you still don't get it.

Seriously?? Take someone else’s idea and don’t even stay true to the character and their identity!

...but a lot of the producers for these films were Ashkenazi-Euro mixed. I don't care either way, but it isn't exclusively a "white thing."

Cloud Atlas is a poor example. One of the purposes of using the same actors throughout the film was to provide story line continuity, not because they didn't want to hire other actors. It's a movie that hasn't engaged in whitewashing. Not sure why it was brought up; you had hundreds of other examples at your disposable.
the cloud atlas example felt strange to me too.
That being said, I still agree with the majority of the video

nobody knows another term for yellowface. its a widespread term many people know so that's what they used. the term itself is problematic in my opinion because it should be separated from blackface because they're different issues but also it only considers pale east asians but should really include south asians, south west asians, etc b/c they're brown they don't have yellow undertones
In ghost in the shell, the author of the Manga literally said that they never imagined the character as specifically Japanese.
Little Big Heart.s this is an echo chamber. The character's LITERAL SHELL is of a Caucasian woman. Inconvenient facts.
RecoveringChristian that’s what I think too. And she’s a cyborg, not in her real body. Who knows what happens to her real one right? That’s what I think.
AutoAnubis it also doesn’t mean they’re automatically not white! You gotta choose one or the other. You aren’t gonna pick a mix of all races, are you?
Shouldn't include Cloud Atlas in this.
Because just about every big actor is playing multiple roles, both of their own race and otherwise. It's kind of the whole point of the movie.
***** I would like to remind everyone of this person's username. Don't bother.
Wakon Fair point
***** ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Excuse me, Cloud Atlas has all the reasons for the actors to play an "asian role" EXACTLY because of the reincarnation, as all the actors throughout the movie play so many characters. Just like what you are claiming, you could say it's whitewashing when Doona Bae plays a white woman in one of the arcs. I don't disagree with the point of the video, just think this example was a very badly chosen one.
Well said 👍
Representation does matter. I remember when I was little, I was surrounded with all these movies with no asian representation at all. I started wishing to be someone else, a different race. Now that I’m older, I’ve started to love myself because of kpop ngl. It made me love myself for myself.
That seems like a problem with you, not with movies.
There is a problem if anyone is getting their self-worth from movies.
Thank God you saw an Asian in a movie! Who knows what would have happened to you!
Vox, you did a good job this time. Why on earth would they choose White actors to play the role as Asians?
+Aditya William McAuliffe-Sudjatmiko The Major is not Asian. Have you watched the movies?
+systematic101 I mean, she IS from japan, but her prosthetic body is definitely ambiguous as to what race it's trying to portray.
I'm glad someone said this.. Otherwise I was going to have to. 👍
also a reminder.. non-white actors played white characters as well for the same reason.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't ghost in the shell not whitewashed? I thought that the point was that the "shell" was mass produced. And the race and identity change really gave major a disconnect. (I'm not very familiar with the anime, this is just a question)
@@pariahsgrit I completely agree
I don't see it as whitewashed. Her soul/ghost is Japanese. + look at the rest of the cast, they could have easily filled the roles with white actors, they didn't.
@ThatOneAsianBroChick no
ThatOneAsianBroChick So people can only be put in bodies identical to their original body?
Seems to undermine the whole point.
Anyway, no one’s soul was put anywhere - it’s a movie.
If you object to what characters in the movie did take it up with them.
But I’ve seen movie characters do worse things than put the wrong person in the wrong race’s body.
The movie is like taking the anime script to shredding machine, taking five pieces and making up all the rest. The only connection are visuals and the movie script is a terrible mess.
correct title: "Yellowface is racism! Racism is not a joke, Hollywood!"
"bad look"= when I use short-shorts, a half-shirt, long socks in leather shoes is a "bad look".

Wtf? Saying yellow face is racism, is like saying black face, brown face or red face is racist

Let's not forget Eddie Murphy playing an Asian man in Norbit
Master Sietra Norbit it's a comedy it was probably intentional
@@tacoface6029 That's what white folks used to say as an excuse to do blackface back in the day - "a comedy". It's not ok at all.
@Steffen Bodar in the current definition it is rascist. But if white people can only play white, asians play asians and so on, you're being racist twice: first you look at the race of the character and then you have to find an actor with the "right" race for the role which is racist.
Is the Asian man stereotypical or something?
@Steffen Bodar so racial joke is unacceptable?
Guy, get a clue, get your head out of your ass, and get over yourself as a white person.
Neville600
You know what? No one who really live in Asia care
Cloud atlas was about reincarnation of the same soul. Halle Berry played a full white woman in one era.
Was looking for this comment, totally. The Asian actress here plays a white lady later on - they cherry picked their examples!
ikr she didnt do enough research for that example
Even though I’m black I understand too that every race needs representation without all those stereotypes. Hollywood is doomed.
I think we gotta cut Cloud Atlas some slack though, that story was related to reincarnation and most of the cast had different versions of themselves from different times, but with a similar look.
Besides, the non white actors/actress also played characters outside their races, which were important for the reincarnation subject.
Agree fully.
