They don't make movies for the actual audience anymore, they make movies for investors who want to play it safe betting on bland, politically correct, therefore safe products.
@@aaliyahbeeby exactly, thats the golden rule of investment: when at the bottom, play it risky so you can have a chance to rise, and if you do rise, play it safe so you dont risk falling down, since you might not be so lucky next time
@@jonasbsj1true but there's a braking point. And I know that for a fact cause I've seen that first hand time and time again. They just will take a bit longer for that to happen
@@aaliyahbeeby They realize that risk, by definition, entails a high chance of failure. In turn, playing it safe becomes its own manageable risk. Meanwhile, I don't hear anything about audiences taking a risk on an indie feature that has no hype and won't spoonfeed them to death. Two sides, same coin, people.
Pleasing the audience IS pleasing the investors. If they don't please the audience, their cash generation will be short-lived and their companies will be worth less.
The issue with Barbie doing so well is that the studios have totally misunderstood why it did so well. The announcement of a string of Mattel based movies proves this.
Since American filmmaking has gotten so stale, I've started to look into foreign films more and have been extremely pleased with how many interesting stories there are out there in other languages
One thing I recently learned really put things in perspective when it comes to Hollywood. When adjusted for inflation, 2001: A Space Odyssey would cost roughly $100 million. It is one of the greatest films of all time, directed by one of the greatest directors of all time, and needed completely new filmmaking and special effects techniques to be realized. All that for $100 million, which I assume was one of the most expensive films ever made at the time. Nowadays, Hollywood can't even sneeze without spending $100 million. It costs Disney at least $250 million to excrete cookie cutter MCU trash with terrible CGI
2001 was a financial disaster,so not sure what your point is. He's saying movies are bad, that's why people aren't watching, you bring up a good movie that nobody watched at the theatre
A major factor for these reboots and remakes is an attempt at not letting copywrites expire. That’s why Disney is remaking their animated movies one by one.
they're protecting their brand, but not necessarily their own IPs. look at how they massacred my poor boy Pinocchio just to undermine Guillermo Del Toro. they don't own many of the properties they are rebooting, like the Snow White project that was in the works.
They have those rights secured for 100 years. Also, most Disney films are adapted from classic literary works, so newer versions aren't remakes...they're simply adaptions. That means that even though the stories are, in most cases, public domain, the animation/music/screewriting/etc remain under copyright.
Darkness is the absence of light, cold is the absence of heat, and evil is the absence of good. Evil is not created in society. It is what you get in society when you remove all that is good.
It’s insane that movies like Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down, Gladiator, Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, Godfather, etc wouldn’t exist in today’s Hollywood.
There hasn't been a single movie in the past decade that anyone will remember as a classic, like the ones you mentioned. Sadly, I think those days are over.
As a child: _"I hope they will make movie adaptations of my favorite shows, toys and franchises!"_ As an adult: _"When all of your wishes are granted, many of your dreams will be destroyed..."_
And now they have to put a black person in every movie. I watch Napoleon and I didn’t know that there was black peoples in France 200 years ago. It’s look like only Tarzan will remain white 😮
To be fair, The Hunger Games prequel is an actual book. Considering how successful the Hunger Games was, it understandable that they would make a movie about the prequel book
Their job isn’t to release movies. Their job to to shape public thought, policy and opinion in an effort to sow chaos, anxiety and hatred. To bastardize and destroy all that was once held dear. It is not incompetence if it is deliberate. There are forces at work that feed off of our pain, our anger and negativity. People are rotting inside as they fail to acknowledge the reality of our world.
yeah no, slow down with conspiracies bro it's all bullshit, the simple conclusion is the truth 99% of the times, and this is that they don't have talent or skill, it's that simple, not everyone can do it.
In my opinion, the Hunger Games movie makes perfect sense. Collins authored the prequel just a few years ago, it’s a great book for the universe (I’ve read them all and they are all good young adult books). I agree with your point, but I think Hunger Games makes sense to me, as the author wrote the prequel material years later. What might suck about this movie is Hollywood trying to connect Katniss to this prequel, which she has virtually zero connection to. But yes, creativity is at an all time low in my mind (agree with you). I will say, marketing has a lot to do with it too - the truly new movies are not marketed the same as the reboots, remakes, etc
I agree. Songbirds and Snakes is fine for what it is. It’s a prequel that just adds more history and world-building to the lore of the Hunger Games. The book is not really structured in a way to be adapted into film.
I agree too, I’ve bought and read the book about 2 years ago Seeing it was gonna be a movie was abit of a surprise but not an unwelcome one. I was curious to see how it’d be translated to film but not having my hopes high. I loved the book but Hollywood almost never understands and captures the reason why a media is loved.
If you really look into details through all of the story’s Lucy gray might have something to do with katniss. Katniss knew the song the hanging tree from her father. Lucy gray I think made the song but she knew it and only performed it once. Few other details also that shows there might be some type of family connection even if not major
The hunger games movie was actually good and not made for no reason. The book came out 3 years ago and it was faithfully adapted. It wasnt hollywood revisiting the universe, they gave the author, the original creator, time to continue the world building. It was a very good prequel that set the stage for how the future films would play out.
I don’t agree. The movie to me was average and made the world even more confusing and contrived. I still find it difficult to believe that for 75 years, no symbol of hope came, and it was made even worse with this movie.
@captainmarvelwilson508 Hope? It's meant to be realistic. It's based on real life. Suzanne was switching from game shows and the news showing footage of the afgan war on tv when she got the idea. With all the corrupt governments, third world countries, wars that have been going on for years, where is the hope. The reason why THG is so popular is because how scarily accurate it is to real life and how easily if could happen.
@@christina4012 It's not the corrupt government that I find contrived, its how this game that has been taking people's children for so long could somehow be tolerated for that long. I get where she was coming from with ideas from the media and third world countries, but these games never felt like something that could keep the rebels from rebelling again. I would have bought it better if it took 15 to 25 years for the second rebellion to come. My real problem with the movie was that I found it boring and didn't care for how things played out, because it doesn't really show me anything new about the character of Snow. The new character also, just weren't at all interesting.
@@captainhowlerwilson508 If it made you confused then i don't know what you think about our world right now .I think you really didn't understand their purpose.
As long as stories continue to be written by committee, they will always be subpar. With too many cooks you spoil the pot, and with too many writers you ruin the plot. With remakes or continuations of existing universes you have a premade fanbase (unless you have alienated them) so there is less of a financial risk to develop the movie. Good stories can come from books, where there are 1 or 2 authors. They are cheaper to develop, and when adapted to movies they already have a fanbase, guaranteeing box office performance. I believe a lot of anime is adapted from light novels. Not many people in the west read much anymore, though, so it is left to Hollywood to write our stories.
@@Demopans5990 I did not mean that Hollywood should adapt light novels into movies, but that we will most likely not get movies like Lord of the Rings, The Godfather, Forrest Gump, Jaws, Jurassic Park, etc. in the future. So many successful movies were adapted from books, and books are not as widely consumed in the west now compared to how they used to be, especially compared to light novel consumption in Japan.
You have zero idea what youre talking about. The issue is with these IPs with built in fan bases that are 20+ years and older. They do not guarantee success as we have seen. The issue is the same people that made all the games and movies we loved 20 30 50 years ago are no longer the ones making these games and movies. These IPs are being licensed out to corporations and often times the people making the “new” “updated” version don’t even know what made the original good. We’re watching copies of copies of copies. The people making Total war Pharaoh never even played total war shogun or medieval. We are culturally bankrupt
@@Person0fColor You may have skipped over the part where I quantified my statement about the built in fanbase by saying unless they alienated the fanbase. The main point is that those projects are easier to get funding for due to the presumption of an existing fanbase, versus a new ip where success is unknown.
Man, remember the 90s when we had experimentation and directors were not scared to try new things? I absolutely love movies, they kept me from getting into drugs and joining gangs. I just adore the concept of it. But look at the state of Hollywood now. Safe to say the golden age is far behind us.
The 1980s were a boom of creativity, computers and video recorders appearing in homes for the masses. There was also a fear of the world ending in a nuclear war at any minute, so risks were taken and a lot of drugs consumed.
Remember the 90s where sexism was prevalent and was seen for laughs by directors and women had no agency not to talk about how queer people were seen as crazies....cough,cough ...Basic instinct.....the plight of the white man,you are finally beginning to know how it feels
Ballad of song birds was a great prequel that actually added a lot to to the og trilogy and made Snow a lot more interesting reading and watching them in retrospective.
exactly it improves the trilogy so much more idk why people are complaining. It’s solely because of a weird hate agenda against Rachel Zegler which is ridiculous
I am grateful that I am not alone in my sentiment that movie should be judged by its own merit and not because of its actress's unfortunate choice of words. The new hunger games movie is like the Joker origin movie. We came to know how the hunger games evolve from the primitive state in the new movie into the one we see in the original trilogy. We'll also see how president Snow became what he is and it doesn't makes me any sympathetic to him at all.

I think carving your own path and not being the damsel in distress, doesn’t mean you can’t have love, but maybe that’s just further in the story and not highlighted or the biggest theme of the story. You’re all freaking out about her claiming the new Snow White would have some agency. It’s trip watching what the world gets upset about. “She’s not dreaming about true love, she’s dreaming about becoming the leader she can be” - there’s nothing wrong with having fire. If we are talking about true avoidance of the mythology, the actual Snow White Disney made is incorrect as well. The original, the witch was her own biological mother. I watched some of those "independent" movies on youtube (don't remember which channel) and it turned out to be a massive feminist propaganda about abortions (portraying men as hosts for alien babies). That was the last movie I watched in about 2 years. I don't really miss them to be honest. Maybe I'll watch some older movie if I'm really bored some day.
Even fan fictions have better sequels to movies than Hollywood made one. Even if missed a series , I would always go to the route of finding actual good writers online that have written incredible sequels or different perspectives of my favorite series instead of watching Hollywood cash grabs that spit on the original work
thought this too, I never read the prequel but the movie felt like it needed another 30-45 mins to fix up the switch in poor pacing nearing the end of the movie.
When you said that there aren't movies like The Truman Show, that stung me. Films from the 80's, 90's and 00's had a big impact on me. They were films that I could watch again and again. Not because I needed more endless sequels of them, but because they were just that good. Some of my favourite films are Perfect Blue, The Truman Show, Batman 89, Ju-On, Metropolis (The Animated Movie), Coming To America, Shawshank Redemption, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Dark Knight and Yume. They didn't feel mainstream, they just felt interesting and that they weren't following the trend that many modern films take. One film that I have to say caught my eye and I enjoyed it greatly was Pearl. It was innovative and proves what you said in the video. Studios are not creatively bankrupt, but are playing it safe, but film is still art. I can understand that they need to generate a profit, but surely a well made original film can do just that.
My brother in christ, there are SO many good films being made these days. In the past year, we've had Past Lives, Anatomy of a Fall, Asteroid City, Oppenheimer, Perfect Days, and SO many more... I don't know if you're not aware of these films, or are you just too worried to watch films that don't feel 'safe'?
@gabrielfynsk2250 That wasn't the point of my comment, and I don't know how you came to the conclusion that you came to. I said that big studios are not creatively bankrupt, but play it safe (Edit: I realise that my point did get muddled up because I had mentioned foreign films when my concern had to do with Hollywood; so that is my bad). Of course, there are exceptions, but it isn't as often as it could be. I even mentioned Pearl to back up my point. Even in the decades that I mentioned, there were plenty of films that didn't hit the mark, but there was ironically more variety. Edit: The films that you mentioned sound interesting. Thanks for the suggestions.
@gabrielfynsk2250 Just to add that I know that I did mention foreign films, but my main concern is about Hollywood. Foreign films are still great to watch, although for China and Japan, I haven't enjoyed as many films from there. European films, especially French are great, but the ones that I have seen are very much so emotionally very powerful and it feels like there isn't as much room for softer movies although I must admit that that is one of the strengths of French films.
Dare I say the entire Akira Kurosawa's filmography and 12 Angry Men teach me to use limitation as catalyst of creative solutions. Many of Akira Kurosawa's movie are maybe expensive, but he's never lose his style(My favourite is Dersu Uzala).
Old audiences: Easily entertained, paid a dime for a seat and a nickel for popcorn. New audiences: Jaded, never satisfied, and sick of $50 movie nights and people talking on their cell phones during the picture.
Hollywood has _always_ chased the long green. Some of its product was also good, and survived to become classic. Classics are always rare at the time. I recommend "Puss in Boots 2: The Last Wish"
I absolutely disagree about the new Hunger Games film, as it may be casted in a similar shadow to its predecessor, it's very different as it focuses on a villain as the main character, Snow. The film constantly gets you to start to like Snow, until you realize of course how evil and cruel he truly is. There are so many cool aspects to the film, too. The acting, cinematography and story was great stuff and I think what worries me is that if this wasn't considered a great or even good film, have the standards risen too high? Trust me, I don't like every movie I watch. I actually have been quite disappointed from most films recently and can even see your point here if I hadn't watched the film. But I have, and this seems like a misleading perspective since many fans did want and even ask for this after the book was a commercial success. I'm not even a die hard fan of the series, but having little to no expectations for the film since it had a low critic score, I was genuinely surprised the critics didn't give this a higher score. The audience score of course is a 90%, though. Try to take my perspective into consideration, though.
This hit home. The last movie my Husband and I saw in theatres was Avengers Endgame. We have begun falling in love all over again with older films. We have also begun reading more and playing more board games. Hmm, maybe this is a good thing 😊🎥📚
Rewatching some of Jackie Chan's older stuff here. You simply can't make those films anymore, even though stuff like his funny Street Fighter scene somehow still holds up to this day
I've seen a few in theaters since because I had high hopes for Disney and Marvel properties...now? I'm done going to theaters. If this is what studios want to put out, as sad it is and as much of a movie buff as I am, I would rather 9 digit movies to stop and let studios go bankrupt. TV shows are so bland and just rehashed plots from the past...when was the last time we got a series like friends or how I met your mother? Big bang theory started amazing but became so generalized and dumbed everything down. The shows and movies written nowadays in America are written for a lower IQ audience so they can appeal to the lowest common denominator..that's why I think they aren't resonating as much anymore. The days of insteller and inception are definitely gone. I can't really think of a successor to Spielberg, Cameron, Ang Lee, Nolan, Scorsese, Ridley Scott...the directors that defined many ground breaking movies the last 30 years...the days innovation are over...the days of "fix it in reshoots, rewrites, and in post" have permeated
Growing up in the 80/90's having access to movies not only coming out at that time but oldies. Seeing the movies being produced these days genuinely depresses me😢 These kids will never know what a mind blowing movie even is.
We don’t get good films anymore because everything’s been done already. It’s also why no famous poems, operas or paintings are made anymore, and why pop music and tv has been in decline for years. No form of entertainment stays interesting for ever.
The #1 reason Hollywood is a failure now is they stopped hiring and promoting based on merit about 10 years ago. They pushed DEI instead of merit, and now people who are not as good at their jobs as the old guard are in important roles. These people shove their DEI agenda down our throats because it is why they got hired so they need to try and maintain that narrative. They are creatively bankrupt and can only leverage the idea of people in the past, unable to come up with any good stories or writing themselves. You can find much much better content on RUclips from original creators vs. the trash Hollywood puts out now. This is because many people who are very creative and good at writing stories and content did not even bother going into Hollywood because the knew they would be discriminated against. The left complains that too many white men have a podcast... but it makes perfect sense as they have control over their content and are not discriminated against by the Hollywood elite who hate them for being white and male.
It's like the feeling you get when you observe a dude on a Harley-Davidson ride past your house and then he rides back, this time doing a handstand on a handlebar, flashing his butt before having a big fall.
This is true in all industries. Ive noticed a general decline in everything these past 5-10 years. But since Hollywood has a higher concentration of subversive ((())), it will be hit harder and faster than the rest.
Because some Studios forgot about the audience completely, some movies you watch nowadays feel like a 90 min commercial with product placement everywhere, storytelling has completely gon out the window.
Just a quick note, the new hunger games prequel is based on a book, and is NOTHING like the original trilogy. It actually is a new, fresh spin-off that I genuinely enjoyed.
If industries listen to the fans, I do think that it will be more successful that what industries just give a somewhat copy of an original masterpiece.
The same man that made once upon a time that literally had no point? The same man who's a pedophile defender? The same man who let his actors get injured just to defend his art? Yea.........no
But how because if you even think to swap a characters race or gender and you're automatically tag as being politically correct. even if you're not being politically correct you just wanted to change it.
Somehow I knew this was going to focus quite a bit on politics, just like practically every other video essay on modern Hollywood. But I have some very liberal friends, family and co-workers (and I'm probably the most liberal of all), yet we are perhaps the biggest sign yet that no one wants to go to the movies anymore unless the movies are, you know, entertaining. Just like how it was a mistake to think the Emoji Movie was worth making just because most of us like using cute little emojis in our messages, it is insulting that studios seem to think we will absolutely eat up, say, the Marvels or Snow White, just because it has a VERY basic feminist message that is easy for me to agree to, even if it is nowhere near as thought-provoking or entertaining as in Barbie or OG Powerpuff Girls. On the other extreme, I certainly don't want to be lectured about "anti-wokeness" by Daily Wire Plus's version of Snow White, either. Especially after the dual writers and actors' strikes, Hollywood in general doesn't exactly have the moral high ground anymore, and their virtue-signaling in movies comes across like some anti-LGBTQA+ politician lecturing us about the Bible even after being caught sexually harassing someone of the same gender. They can't preach more diversity in movies while also pushing for AI to replace human employees of ANY ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation entirely. They can't pretend to care about women's rights while sexual harrassment/gender discrimination allegations still pop up from time to time and people like John Lasseter and Woody Allen mange to still get cushy executive positions. They can't even use Southern California culture as an excuse as they move all their work either to less-expensive states (and especially sweatshops in third-world countries for the entry-level positions) or countries where they can experience more corporate welfare and less union activity like Canada and Mexico.
The whole industry is a joke at this point. Only reasonable thing to do would be to get rid of these "writers" and actors that do nothing but pander to nonexistent audiences and antagonize the audience they're meant to be entertaining and get people that know how to entertain.
It's not a problem of writers, writers' job is exactly to write stories that producers request. The problem lies in Disney, Universal and Warner Bros' HQ that, in order to please investors, request nothing but prequels, sequels or reboots. Should the HQ change their goals, like actually pleasing the audience, the films will be great again exactly like they were once.
One of my favorite movies I've watched within the last year was Spirited. Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds. Original concept, sort of based around A Christmas Carol but not explicitly, a musical with dancing, and a comedy. I thought it was fantastic. And it was refreshing to finally see a new movie with an original story. I crave those movies. Pixar is still trying to hold steady too. Luca and Turning Red were great! Even Lightyear was good even though it was based from Toy Story. Elemental was awesome too! They still know how to tell a good story. Disney on the other hand can't seem to figure out how to tell a story at all. Their remakes, spin-offs, and even new films are just hard to watch. Strange World was just abysmal. I wanted to like it but it was sooo boring and you could feel just how safe they were trying to play it. I'm hoping Wish will be better, but I'm not hopeful. Cause they haven't really had a good original story since Moana. Raya and the Last Dragon was also bad. so idk.
It's important to note that adapting an old movie to better reflect modern views isn't bad in an of itself. The problem is that these adaptions are not being done in a way that makes them good. I'd much rather watch a Snow White remake that touches on female empower/dispowerment than watch exactly the same movie but in 4K, but disney is lazy with their writing and simply thinks that minor changes without true backing is sufficient.
Honestly started watching movies from the 50s, to the 1990s this year and if there's one thing ive noticed is this stories were unique in their own way even the campy ones were something of their own u would feel something or anything when watching this movies it actually made u follow along the plot the characters the atmosphere made u guess what was going to happen next the anticipation, but now watching modern movies just literally makes me feel exhausted except for some few and everything is repitive no originality or given effort to show their passion and thought in making movies you'll just automaticaly know it's a cash grab
I couldn't,the generic stories, the plot holes and God awful picture and sound quality already turns me of,yea today isn't perfect but at least social issues are discussed with adept knowledge today unlike back in the day
The one thing I keep seeing in people complaining about the new Hunger Game movie is, why did Hollywood make this. Do they not realize that the book it is based on is why it exists? Or do they not realize that it is based on a book that came out a while ago that told the backstory of Snow. Do people just not read books anymore? (Which if you haven't read the book and were a fan of the book series, I'd highly recommend this next installment)
That was my exact thought. It was based off a book and I went to see it specifically to see how it compared to the book. Also, this didn't feel like it was supposed to be a blockbuster film based on the limited marketing I saw for it. Felt like it was just to get the complete story Collins wrote on screen.
@@juliantheapostate8295most people complaining about movies are just illiterate and don’t read at all. If you read any books in the literary space you would be aware of this books existence as it was promoted heavily when it first came out. Also you’ve obviously never been part of a fandom, otherwise you would know that people would still enjoy content years later. Simply look at Star Wars or LITR or Harry Potter. Just because something was meant for a younger demographic doesn’t make it bad. Don’t be such a stuck up little b**ch.

First. Amazing content pace and production. Second. Thanks for bringing up how important collective entertainment is for humanity. This is high stakes and I'm so glad there are people like you trying to turn the tide.
I believe this is how we can finally, as a society, end the notion of celebrities. We need to stop idolizing the performers for their sake as well as our own, and start offering recognition to true talents.
Yes, I’m kind of okay with the film industry not being so based on celebs or actors. It’s good that it’s more based on the whole product itself. Now sometime I feel a bit like an hypocrite because in the music industry I do champion for music idols.
I think the long term goal is to take away people's creativity. Can't be inspired or create something new if you've only seen the same thing everywhere. This isn't just happening in movies but in our buildings, books, VR, games. Everything is becoming bland and soulless
There's no franchise fatigue, or superhero fatigue. There's only bad movie fatigue. There are 22 seasons of Law & Order, 456 episodes. They continue to make the content good and the fans continue to watch. There's only 25 to 30 main Marvel movies. Again compare that to 456 hour-long episodes. I wish everyone would stop using that term it's so annoying and inaccurate. Studios are putting out crap and audiences can see it in the trailers, and based on the last movie or two.
I agree with everything said here. I just wanted to add that Top Gun Maverick was actually a great movie. I can watch it over and over. I never get sick of it honestly.
@@6581punk yeees, I definitely agree the sequel of top gun was way better than the original though while I love lady Gaga sadly I think her song for the film was mehh compared to take my breath away. In the original film just the song was better, here the action and whole film it’s much better. I liked the story way better this time and actually liked better Glenn Powells character than Val Kilmer in the original film. Im really kind of sad I didn’t like the main song this time but compensated for a great action flick. Maybe next time the action film to be fixed will be Armageddon. Which had a killer power ballad by Aerosmith but the film was meh but always remembered for one of the greatest main songs ever made. The first Top Gun I think is mostly remembered for its great main song, now in the sequel the plot fixed 100% but terrible main song doesn’t hold a candle to take my breath away and I love lady Gaga. She did an incredible job with Shallow but in top gun she failed creating a big power ballad.
To be fair - the new hunger games (which I havent seen) is based on a new book released in 2020 (which I havent read). I think its fair enough to adapt the latest book though - because the originals were book adaptations to begin with
Hollywood has always been afraid to try new things but its only gotten worse in recent years and that's why A24 has been so successful even with their often minimal budgets.
The minimal budget is a part of why there successful. They don’t have to gross a billion to make a profit so they can take chances and not worry about pleasing everyone in the hopes of making a blockbuster hit
you forget how many times A24 miss, i 've seen plenty and just bc they make more 'weird' and expiriemental films dosnt mean that they are good. Also a24 isnt a production company but a distributor mostly although they have influence on films
As someone who likes the Hunger Games, it's not a series that has potential for an expanded universe like Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. The main story is where the most interesting stuff happens, the rest is just meant to be bare minimum lore and world building. Even the Wonka movie is a representation of that, as what makes Willy Wonka interesting is what we see in the present story, not how he began.
disagree tbosas isn’t just an unnecessary prequel it improves the story so much more. Tbosas showcases how snow came to be president and it gives a lot of insight into his character. Lucy gray is an incredibly important element of the rebellion and the story is excellent.
@ShiYuMeng2 It's been a long time since I last read the trilogy (haven't read the prequel). I'm speaking more towards the movies. Like I said, I like the films, but to expand on things that happened before isn't really interesting to me. If the series began that way and built up towards the story of Katniss and the Rebellion, then it would have been interesting. But now it just feels like filler.
@@jasonjungreis203 When it comes to corporations, anything can be a potential franchise. If this movie were to somehow manage to make over $300 million at the world wide box office, we will see another film be made.
I think part of it is definitely a bit of a culture wide writers-block. For me, most things seem like they’ve already been done and it’s difficult to write an original plot without it inherently being based on something else, referencing something else, or being close to something else (even unintentionally). Kinda like South Park’s “Simpsons did it!” but with everything lol I agree that a factor is greed and keeping investors happy, Hollywood wanting to play it safe, while also pushing agendas over original story. But I think those factors exist BECAUSE it’s so hard to write an original plot. Excessive greed and political messaging might be filtering out some gems of filmography, but I also don’t think that getting rid of those things are inherently going to usher in a new golden era of movies.
I was talking about this subject with my mother just today. I actually welcome the general trend of sequels, prequels and reboots...as long as they're done right, that is. There's a very good reason film franchises get drawn out for so long, and that's because popular heroes and villains in fiction become almost like old friends. We are fascinated by them and want to be constantly updated on their ongoing exploits. (I would prefer that Hollywood recast major roles with younger actors rather than bringing back the now-elderly original actors, though.) These "new old" movies fail in my eyes only when they either tell the same story over again or come up with something so radically different that it's related to the original in name only. I enjoyed WONKA because I thought it struck a nice balance between the two extremes. It captures the wonder of the original, but at the same time it heads in a slightly different direction. You can enjoy it without ever having seen the original 1971 film, but the spirit of the old Willy Wonka is still recognizable.
The Ballad of Snakes and Songbirds is an amazing book and really shows you what turned Coriolanus Snow into the person he is in the original story. It was an awesome prequel. But it wasn't a good movie adaptation. I wish these directors and writers stop taking good books and adapting them to movies and start writing stories meant for movies. Smh.
There are still good movies coming out, you just generally don't find them in theaters as much. I guess the good news is, you don't need a Hollywood budget to make a good movie and you don't need theaters for people to see them.
Cause they make films for their peers rather than fans of the actual franchises they are remaking and rebooting. Also to push political agendas in these franchises.
Walkabout. I saw it as a teenager. I've never forgotten it. Powerful and brilliant acting, scary, romantic, disturbing. Who can say that about ANY film this century? It lasted 50 years?
If a movie has a compelling premise, people will watch. This explains why Barbie did well even though it was woke trash. There is actually a decent premise
"Barbie is woke trash" Y'know, somehow, the Barbie Movie managed to make "woke" themes actually work. I haven't a clue how, but it did. And it actually worked really well.
@@Piss_Off_Plz It's called "marketing". The marketing team at Warner Bros. tried to make Barbie look like a "feel good movie of the Summer" and not "woke trash referencing eons-old Turner flicks". Even though there is some interest in interesting concept movies (being “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer”), there still is this stigma when people do get original films, they feel like they “don’t get it” and refer back to familiarity, having the movie explained everything to them in one go. Even the audience don’t really know what they want. I’ve watched “Suspiria” (2018) recently. Did I get everything that was going on in that movie? Not really. Does that make the movie bad? No.
@InevitableOption-ic2vx "...they want the exact same thing they've seen over and over again with a slightly different coat of paint over it..." What a lot or perhaps most consumers want is just that, something familiar that they enjoy. Why is that a bad thing? They are the ones paying for the product. One of the problems with many current movies is that they are not giving the customers what they want.

To be fair, the hunger games movie talked about in this vid (ballad of songbirds and snakes) are just an adaptation. It's meant to be a prequel, which i assume it's completely okay for Lionsgate to delve more into the world building before Katniss ever exists. It will surely be bland for anyone who has never read the book by the author though. Most people can't feel the real substance from the movie without knowing what's really happening behind characters' minds. The book portrays more about political and societal aspect, so I guess people that aren't familiar with them are hesitant to learn further.
As Hollywood runs out of innervation and creativity. Independent film studios are going to pick up the slack. Indie is on the rise across all different medias, books, comics, and music. Now is a good time to be part of the growing indie market. Either by supporting it with your wallet or creating something of your own.
Most of these stories that are being remade were made in a time where life was much worse for most people than it is now. The issue is not remakesbut rather it is done with not enough thought put into it. Rather than pandering to everything they should take the time to reimage the stories with perspective than a rushed remake with little store or plot that is both unenjoyable and does allow fresh perspectives to be seen.
I just saw the new hunger games and honestly the movie is pretty solid and spent a lot of work setting up the rise to power of snow and how the hunger games started.
It honestly hurts to know that instead of films like Fight Club, a retrospective take on the masculine existence accompanied by plot twists and intense editing, or The Truman show, a psychologically driven depiction of a man who lives with actors paid to lie to him, we're getting... uno... the movie. Can a meteor wipe us out now?
This is the good reason why I feel less excited and hyped for movies nowadays. It’s true that Hollywood are running out of original ideas. I’m so sick and tired of Hollywood keep ruining some of the good classics and franchises. Marvel Cinematic Universe has lost their steam after the ending of the Infinity Saga and the passing of Stan Lee, DC Extended Universe is over and done with, Star Wars also lost their steam, and Disney live action remakes are getting worse which is why I am permanently done with those Disney remakes in the future. Sadly, they no longer make great movies like they used to back in the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s such as Ghost, Dances with Wolves, Schindler’s List, Titanic, The Mask of Zorro, Saving Private Ryan, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Harry Potter, the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Dark Knight trilogy, District 9, Inception, and the Avengers movies. Jurassic Park (1993) however will always be my number one all time favorite movie. But too be fair, Oppenheimer and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are one of the best movies I saw in 2023 so far.
the modern filmmaking Industry makes you appreciate directors like David Fincher, Christopher Nolan or Martin Scorsese even more. They know bringing out a good movie is worth more than bringing out politically correct movies
Actually i think the title of this video is completely wrong. I think people did ask for these movies and thats the problem. I dont remember back in the 80s or 90s anyone asking for Rocky or Independence day. Hollywood just made them and thought those movies would sell tickets. Now hollywood is making movies that small groups of people like. People forget how everyone was asking for a New matrix movie. Hollywood made it and people hated it. People also asked for more marvel and more star wars. Movies were better when hollywood didnt care what you wanted.
It’s funny how in decades past, the limits of budget and film actually helped the filmmakers make more immersive movie experiences. But now movies have insane budgets and special effects that let you show any thing happening that you want on film, but they all lack soul and quality. Less truly is more
As the day to day lives of people get worse and worse, they want dumb escapism, and as bad as these current films are, they make _something._ The days of thought-provoking, emotionally ripe films are done until we bring a level of stability back to this world.
@@mariophreak I agree with many points but this one makes no sense... it's not about challenging a narrative, it's about adding onto a story that already exists, that's the whole point of the prequel. The Hunger Games trilogy did indeed have a good narrative, and by adding on extra information to help understand the author's worldbuilding better the message can be more concise and interesting to understand.
I think this one of the victims of a larger wave of incompetence that's spreading throughout the west, particularly in main stream industries. Sure we can see how bad a lot of movies/games/entertainment are, but we're also seeing more things becoming terrible. How many people actually prefer windows 11 to 10, for instance? When you compare refrigerators/air conditioners to those made 50 years ago, why are the 50 year old models much more reliable? Everything you buy today tries to be "smart" to justify spying on you with the thinnest veneer of convenience/functionality, and that's if it's not just swapped from being a reasonable product to buy to a subscription you now rent. Even if Hollywood decided to try and turn this ship around, who would they even hire? Who are the outstanding directors/writers/actors of the past decade that could even be compared to their counterparts of 30-40 years ago? There might be a handful of good, competent people in those categories but nowhere near as many as there used to be. This isn't a problem that's going to be solved quickly, or painlessly, because this part of the solution will take years, if not decades, to fix.
You’re right directors/actors/writers had more interesting life experiences which they could bring to their stories. Any young film makers now, in the west at least, have been raised in cotton wool, sat in their rooms thinking up new pronouns.
At one time (around 10 years ago) I visited the movies once or twice every month. Now I hardly ever go, despite having a super new cinema just five minutes walk from my house. It shows mostly kids’ movies, and in any case cinema is now so expensive. The only film I saw at the cinema this year was the Barbie movie, and that was trash. Who wants to pay the thick end of twelve quid to sit in a movie theatre with fewer than ten other people, to watch something you wouldn’t bother to put on, if it was showing on TV? The cinemas are all going to fold, if Hollywood doesn’t sort itself out.
Tom Cruise is the last true movie star. He’s both the businessman and actor, with experience since the 80s, he knows what people want and make movies people will love and enjoy. Say what you like about him but he is a legend and the only one still in the game that understands and delivers movies people love, want and enjoy.
I agree. It seems like movie stars are becoming extinct. Being a movie star requires the right balance of looks, personality, charisma, and ability to select projects with good scripts. For male movie stars, it also requires that the actor be masculine. And masculinity seems to be in decline. While I don't agree with Tom Cruise's personal life choices, I can appreciate the fact that the man works hard, and respects the audience enough to only choose projects that will be entertaining for them to watch. Other actors that I enjoy watching on the big screen are Jake Gyllenhall, Robert Pattinson, Leonardo Dicapprio, Brad Pitt, and Ryan Gosling. Their movies tend to be entertaining. After they get old, I don't know if anyone will be able to replace that talent void that will be left.

One thing I recently learned really put things in perspective when it comes to Hollywood.
When adjusted for inflation, 2001: A Space Odyssey would cost roughly $100 million. All that for $100 million, which I assume was one of the most expensive films ever made at the time.
Nowadays, Hollywood can't even sneeze without spending $100 million. It costs Disney at least $250 million to excrete cookie cutter MCU trash with terrible CGI

Never quite thought of that one, but excellent point.
They have those rights secured for 100 years. Also, most Disney films are adapted from classic literary works, so newer versions aren't remakes...they're simply adaptions. What might suck about this movie is Hollywood trying to connect Katniss to this prequel, which she has virtually zero connection to.

The hunger games movie was actually good and not made for no reason. The book came out 3 years ago and it was faithfully adapted.
Anyways, a live action of the original Disney movie would be boring asf.

Even if missed a series , I would always go to the route of finding actual good writers online that have written incredible sequels or different perspectives of my favorite series instead of watching Hollywood cash grabs that spit on the original work
the hunger games movie, is based on a prequel that came years ago, for me it makes absolutely sense for it to be adapted. the book was amazing
thought this too, I never read the prequel but the movie felt like it needed another 30-45 mins to fix up the switch in poor pacing nearing the end of the movie.
I can understand that they need to generate a profit, but surely a well made original film can do just that.
you should try the film parasite, it was a good film in a long time
My brother in christ, there are SO many good films being made these days.

We need to keep politics out of everything and focus on the story and acting
100% politics are naturally very divisive. Clearly a mistake when trying to market products to as many people as possible.
Define politics
Eh you can have things that have a message and not be heavy handed and insulting about it.
Only reasonable thing to do would be to get rid of these
"writers" and actors that do nothing but pander to nonexistent audiences and antagonize the audience they're meant to be entertaining and get people that know how to entertain.

Maybe they're reading better books, or have moved on from the young adult section
i dont think people read at all which is sad bc books develop ideas and imagination and movies just cut you off from reality :(
@@juliantheapostate8295most people complaining about movies are just illiterate and don’t read at all. I liked the story way better this time and actually liked better Glenn Powells character than Val Kilmer in the original film. Maybe next time the action film to be fixed will be Armageddon. Which had a killer power ballad by Aerosmith but the film was meh but always remembered for one of the greatest main songs ever made.

Also despite the 1971 film being barely faithful to the book unlike in 2005, it tells a different backstory than what Wonka is trying to show
@ShiYuMeng2 It's been a long time since I last read the trilogy (haven't read the prequel). I'm speaking more towards the movies.
Like I said, I like the films, but to expand on things that happened before isn't really interesting to me. If the series began that way and built up towards the story of Katniss and the Rebellion, then it would have been interesting. But now it just feels like filler.
I don't think they're gonna set up an HG expanded universe. I think it'll just be this film and that's it.

You know The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes is based on a book, right?
Yeah doesn't feel like he knows it 😅 btw the movie is a good one
We should be asking who controls Hollywood?
wow, wow, careful right there!
We already know…don’t we?
Most of these stories that are being remade were made in a time where life was much worse for most people than it is now. The issue is not remakesbut rather it is done with not enough thought put into it. Rather than pandering to everything they should take the time to reimage the stories with perspective than a rushed remake with little store or plot that is both unenjoyable and does allow fresh perspectives to be seen.
The movie he's criticizing isn't even a remake
Watch The Tron Legacy. Its peak
@@Elysia7695 I did. I actually thought Tron Legacy is fantastic in my opinion.
the modern filmmaking Industry makes you appreciate directors like David Fincher, Christopher Nolan or Martin Scorsese even more.
Less truly is more
Why do so many restaurants make food that doesn't cater to me?
As the day to day lives of people get worse and worse, they want dumb escapism, and as bad as these current films are, they make _something._ The days of thought-provoking, emotionally ripe films are done until we bring a level of stability back to this world.
The new Hunger Games movie is based off of the prequel before the books... that's like the the whole point for making it
Has this guy even seen the movie? I have a feeling he hasn't.
But how can you know for sure you don’t want to consume “Productman 2: Rise of the Girl Boss” if Hollywood doesn’t make it?
I feel bad that the new generation has to be raised off of these movies.
Tom Cruise doesn't make the movies...he only acts in them. He'd star in anything you threw at him if his paycheck was big enough.
lol Tom cruise? Okkkkay
@@teptime Bro this is demonstrably untrue, Tom Cruise produced (not executive produced) Top Gun Maverick

Ever wondered why there's no "Best Producer" Oscar?
can you make a video about Sound of Freedom? how come this movie didn't flop even when it had a low budget?
You don't need a high budget to make a hit. You need a good story and good actors and a competent director to bring the script to life.
And yes, I'd love to see a video on Sound of Freedom as well, good recommendation 👍
The problem is most of Hollywood tried to smear this movie. They wouldn't act like that unless they had something to hide.
Wokenuts and leftists trashed the movie for being conspiracy in nature and for its Christian references. So naturally it ended up being massively popular with everyone of us. If you see it's rating on rotten tomatoes its like 50% by critics and nearly 100% by audience.
Having low budget doesn't mean the movie won't make profit

2:01 And even at 11th is Black Adam. Still relying on existing property. 12th is Elvis. Relying on a fallen star.
Although I'm a little confused here. I heard Black Adam was a commercial failure so how is it as high as 11th?
New Toho Godzilla movie coming out tomorrow and I’m seeing it. That’s like the 33rd Godzilla movie and I still crave more Godzilla.

Movies are made for an audience they want, not one that actually widely exists
I’m afraid all of these companies will have to go bankrupt before we stop getting all these horrible movies.
The animated series, Velma, represents everything wrong with modern entertainment and society, in addition to showing that adult animation has been mistreated.
