I just completed a pre-apprenticeship program here in Ontario and have been down applying a bunch to some local business and contractors. Keeping my head up, but my biggest worry is whether I'd still be able to do my passion (also music, I'm a guitarist and producer) throughout electrical work. Thanks for making this video, it was VERY helpful off the bat! I did 4 years of uni and graduated with a B.A. but my field was quite broad and I've struggled to find meaningful work. Just today I've been looking over the trades and becoming an Electrician to me seems most interesting, so I think I'm going to shoot for it. I live in Ontario but would love to consider living anywhere in Canada, and so I was quite glad to have read that you have that ability once you meet that Interprovincial standard. It does seem a bit daunting getting started in the field because you have options, but the options are what make it also a welcoming field to get into as there as multiple methods of entry. You are welcome.. hope the best with your choice. You may also want to look into new construction plumbing, too.. I always noticed they have a lot more variety and not so repetitive.
Overall the electrical industry will give you a good experience, and pay you half decent while working for a company.

I am in Ontario, I have been trying to become an electrician the traditional apprenticeship route for four years. Seems like nobody wants anyone without any training anymore.
I luckily was laid off recently and was able to get into a one year Electrical Techniques program while still being on EI.
Also, are hours different per province because I could have sworn its 9000 hours.
Yes, I think hours are different for each province. And yeah, sometimes it's hard to get a job as an apprentice, but it depends on the environment.. if workers are needed, they'll hire anyone, if things are tight, it's harder to get a job as an electrical apprentice.

I'm an immigrant from Scotland living in Eastern Ontario. Been here 10 years now but had issues with employment due to health issues in the past. After being a mess for a few years and being as healthy as I can be, I think Electrical work is my calling. I'm 34 now but I've been building my own PCs for 20 years and have been a Microsoft certified technician in the past after doing Computer Tech in at the local technical college before I moved so I feel I'm technically minded and could be an asset. Was in warehouse work before but was treated like crap because I'm partially blind in one eye and was seen from there as "completely disposable". Real quote. I'll be visiting my local employment center when my daughter returns to school and hopefully begin my journey towards apprenticeship. I really hope this is the beginning of my redemption arc and I can return in a year to say I'm now an apprentice electrician and in a mentally and financially better place.
Enough about me, great video and thanks for inspiring so many different folk to enter the trade
Hey you can do it.. don't give up. The biggest tool is knowledge out there.. know your rights, and know the basics of how an electrician works on a jobsite, and you'll be on your way, regardless of any disabilities you mentioned..

Yes if you do, you'll be able to have a decent career to move forward in life.. it's not easy, especially if you do not have good people teaching you, but you're never stuck anywhere, because there's usually quite a bit of work around.. always listen closely to what people say, they often want to pass on tricks (this includes not other electricians.. other people on site are usually pretty down to earth and knowledgeable.. which can give you better insight!)

Cannot recommend any electrician colleges, sorry.. A lot of becoming a good apprentice electrician is self learning through reading and asking a lot of questions to your journeyman! Hope it works out well for you!

Hey! I live in Manitoba and I'm having trouble with what I need to enter an apprenticeship. Maybe you can answer this question. Do I need an employer BEFORE applying or is there a course I need to take before that! Loved your vid, I'm intending on watching more of your content.
You need to work for an employer before you become an apprentice - They will sign you up with the authorities governing your apprenticeship, where your employer has to submit your hours.
The easiest way to get started is with a "pre-apprenticeship" class.. or you can try to apply places and get hired!
Hey just a quick question, for the four levels of schooling, was the "Canadian electrical code part one", the only texbook taught? Or were there more textbooks taught?
It was just the one code book. So yes, "Canadian Electrical Code, Part 1". They used to come out every 4 years, but think they switched to every 3 years.. it really put a burden on the teachers by not being able to keep up with changing questions and answers to match the code book.. sometimes we'd be on different code book versions at the same time with conflicting answers.. it was a bad learning environment.. hope things are easier for you in class!
Hi, first of all, thank you so much to share this video. I am also planning to go into trades but am confused about which one to choose, as there are so many lol. The electrician was the first one that came to my mind. How hard the levels and exams were? I know, physical work would always be there in every trade, but how heavy is it required for an electrician?
All trades require physical work for the most part!
The exams are all different per school, except for the FINAL RED SEAL exam at the very end of your apprenticeship! One day at a time! You will figure it out, no one can do it for you!

Maybe the certification comes out of Victoria. I went to school in British Columbia. Any school will get you going.. to be honest, you really do learn most things in the field (when working).. and when you want to learn further, you'll have to do your own reading and studying.. read my article for more info.. leave a comment there please!:

Hii . I have a question like I started working just like you like I haven’t done foundation course directly got the job . How many hours I have to complete to go for level 1 ? And do the company need to submit those hours too before going to level 1 or it’s like after completing level 1 ??
Hey, you can try to apply to a company, but it will be a harder to get a job. Doing pre-apprenticeship training gives you your hours and training, and they also help you find a job many times. Yes, the company must submit your hours.. keep track to make sure they submit them properly.

Does the process to become industrial electrician is the same? I'm from Brazil with more than 7 years working as industrial electrician in cement factory, package company and at the moment I'm working in an underground copper mining industry in Portugal. I'm going to Canada to work on a closed visa as general construction labour as I worked 3 years in construction in Australia, the thing is that I'd like one day to work as industrial electrician in Canada, after I finish the contract with the company I'm going to work with. What advice would you give me, what steps should I follow to be ready to look for a job in industry when the time comes. Hey! I have not heard of it.. things change very fast on the schooling side of things, especially from province to province. Your school will prepare you so that when you come out you'll have some basic knowledge of what's going on. Make sure to take advantage of any grants available to you! (Ask your teacher, or call your governing body!!)

I was recently laid of from my job, I'm 48 (still young), but my fiance encouraged me go intot atrade, since going on EI the government is providing funds for schooling. I considered taking up the electrical trade, but had doubts, mainly in myself. However, my fiance boldy told me, "You can do this!" So here I am.

If I register as an apprentice in BC and live there, but find camp work in AB; would I need to register in AB and complete schooling there? Not sure how to works if I end up working in different provinces during the 4 year apprenticeship program.

hey, im wondering if you have to sign up for ITA before enrolling into an apprenticeship program? ive noticed that schools require that but im unsure about personal businesses and outside companies, as well as construction unions. what are your thoughts on the likelihood of being accepted into a trades program with no prior experience as well?
The likelihood would be lower without any training, but you can get it! I did it without any schooling.. it's just all about timing and what the industry is demanding right now (if they need lots of workers and can see you're interested).
I think the school signs you up with ITA.. I would reach out to a local school and ask them your questions, they'll guide you!

@@pace3101 You use calculators at all times. On the real test you have to use a certain calculator, so make sure to use that calculator the whole time through your schooling so that you're used to it!

First find where you're moving in Ontario, and reach out to your local college. Ask about grants, and immigration process. Do your grades have to be exceptionally high to get an apprenticeship? I know basic computer skills but are there any that I should learn (Senior High school student)
No, you will learn everything in class. Your first year breaks down all the basics.
You will need to know Ohm's Law (which they teach you), but if you visit my website, I have many of these articles already (you feel free to request a tutorial!):

To take electrician schooling, they often have prerequisites in order to enroll, but you can do it!
The schooling is important to a degree when being an electrician, but it's more about knowing the code rules and tricks of the trade, which you learn on site (if you have a good journeyman and company!)

Hi I live in BC and at the moment im taking an upgrading course to meet the prequisite for the Electrical Foundation Program, once I complete the program I want to go into an apprenticeship. my question is, is the schooling hard? im not the brightest when it comes to math and science so im a little worried that I may not do very well.
You will do fine! They show you it all, and then you have lots of time to practice and ask questions. You can also watch these videos if you'd like to get a head start!:

I had no knowledge of the electrical industry or code. You will learn that when you go to school and on the jobsite through training.
For ITA, this is only in British Columbia, and your employer registers you, and looks after your hours, etc.
You simply just apply, get hired, and start working with your apprenticeship! My article may help a bit..

I cannot say personally.. I just went to a college it was fine.. a lot of electrical is self learning honestly.. and if you have a good journeyman guiding you, that’s the best way… the teacher will guide you too in terms of schooling.. if not, RUclips was very helpful for math and stuff if you get stuck!!

I’m 20 Y old and really interested in Electrician program. My question is - Can I go through a trade school which is for about 3 months(fees-12 K) and then I am told I need to work for 9 thousand hours where I’ll get paid 40 to 55 K and then I need to write the Exam 309A and I’m good to go after that. Is this the correct way to become electrician?
And how much do you make here in Canada after you get the license? I’m in Ontario
Hi Suma, that seems very expensive, and getting started, I do not think wages are that high.. maybe $18-20/hour first year.
Look into "pre-apprenticeship program", that is usually 9 months long, and gives your first year of schooling, and they often help you find your first job, too!

Hey! I would first start with your local college, and see where it takes you! You can also look online if Canada itself has any financial assistance to help you along during your time of schooling! If you are already working, many times you can go on E.I (unemployment insurance) as you go to school, and there's often grants to help with schooling, and living expenses during your time @ school!

If you can find a job, you'll get paid to learn on site, get hours, and then you can go to school and get paid with EI (unemployment).
Otherwise the pre-apprenticeship program is very useful, too! Ask your local college!
It’s so hard to find an apprentice job, its all about connections and since i have no experience in the electrical field no one wants to hire me.

Can an apprentice start working in service or do they have to work their way up into service?…. I am looking into going into resi but I hear it’s fast paced but commercial and industrial is slower paced… in new construction anyways… what should I do… I am a bit slower paced as a person and I am very safety conscious about electrical but I also suffer from depression and anxiety so I don’t know if this trade would be right for me… what would you recommend I do?….
Commercial is usually a pretty good place, not overly fast, and you are usually overseen by someone to guide you along.
You have to work your way up to "service work", as it usually involves knowing what you're doing to troubleshoot.

So let’s say I took a Pre-App how do I find an actual apprenticeship? I’m very confused about the process 😅 (I live in Ontario)
Pre-Apprenticeship usually gives you first year of schooling, and some hours to your apprenticeship. You would then apply for jobs at electrical companies with that new training on your resume. Can you explain the "red seal"?
Hey sure. In Canada, some trades are "Red Seal", some are not. Electrical is Red Seal, meaning that the certification can be used anywhere in Canada (except Quebec, I think).
To get your Red Seal, you need to have a certain amount of hours & pass all your schooling to get the Red Seal (electrical ticket).
The apprenticeship works by getting hired with an electrical employer, who becomes your sponsor. This sponsor is in charge of submitting your hours and your apprenticeship (make sure they submit your hours!). You can switch sponsors (companies), who will then take over managing your apprenticeship.
You usually go to work for 9 months, then school for 3 months (each province can be a little different).
The goal is to get hands-on experience @ work, while accumulating working hours. Then when you go to school, you are required to get 70% minimum to pass.
There's 4 years total.
If you pass all 4 years, get become a ticketed electrician in your province. You then get another test about a week after, which is the Red Seal exam, and then that allows you to work all across Canada (except Quebec I think).
There is usually an online portal to track your hours and schooling grades. Your sponsor then has to sign off on you to tell the Apprenticeship Authority that you are capable and ready to become a journey person.

Sure you can! You are shown everything on the jobsite.. sometimes you get better bosses than others on some jobsites.. if you have a bad experience, don't give up.. you will eventually find a company that will teach you!

Tricky part is finding a union that is ready to take you in which seems impossible in Ontario.

Either way you go, the company will register you as an apprentice.
I've only done non-union, so don't know the ins-and-outs of union, but being non-union you can jump around to different companies for where the current work is.
In short, a company has to register you as an apprentice electrician. You can start working without schooling, your employer trains you. Then you go to school, and your employer submits your hours.
Contact a local college to break it all down for you with current pamphlets they'd have.

Hi there! It can be very confusing, can't it!! My highest recommendation is to contact a college of the Canadian province where you'll be moving.. they'll have all the latest details on how to immigrate to Canada as an electrician and how to follow the best steps necessary.
Remember, time is money in this industry, so if you spend two years doing something that isn't going to benefit you for electrical, that is two years of being not making journeyman electrical wage!

Many times when someone is a little older, they have a lot more experience in life in regards to common life tasks, so you will catch on quite quick. For the schooling, they often give requirements.. but I'm not sure if you have to have them.. what's most important is that you have a strong understanding of what's going on, and that you pass your test.. I have been working in accounting for 9 years in Vancouver, BC. I make $53K per year. I have a Bachelor's Degree. I am 38.
I think I have reached my ceiling of the salary. It's very difficult for me to make more. Also, I feel the developing AI will keep reducing the career and job opportunities of accounting.
On the other hand, I have been thinking about being a electrician for some years. I am interested in the works and the knowledge.
1) Do you think it's worth for me take the program of Electrical Foundation in BCIT ($4,500 Tuition) or Vancouver Career College ($13,000 Tuition) to change my career as a electrician?
2) After the program, I need to be an apprentice electrician. Do you think I will make so little money, which is much less than $53K per year?
3) I am 38, but I am fit. I look young too. However do you think most employers are only willing to hire the young people, who just graduated from high schools and post secondary, as the apprentice electricians?

Hi I can't give any advice on your career path, but apprentices will make less than that, and it will be about 1 full year if you go the electrical foundation route without any pay..

Haha no, the electrical industry for smaller companies you usually work at don't do those kind of things.. the industry is kind of cut-throat.. you are on your own and have to learn to fight for your rights and wage.. (depending if you work union or non-union).. once you learn the ropes, you know what you're entitled to and what makes a company good vs bad etc.

You need your hours to fully complete your electrical apprenticeship, in addition to finishing the schooling, so you can't just do one without the other!

For the schooling, you can reach out to a local college and ask about "continuing education" or "after hours training", but for the actual on-site hours, I think it has to be electrical hours (not another job's hours).

Hey thanks for reaching out! Electrical apprentices don't really work that way for "job banks". A job bank job would typically be for an out of town job, or an upcoming big job.
The best way is to prepare a resume, and apply locally at various electrical employers! You'll eventually get a call back if you keep trying!
BC electricians only need 6000 hours? Yikes... you must have some awful 1st year journeymen walking around... that's still 4 year in ontario and a good 4th year can be hard to find.
Hours don't really make up a good electrician.. it really comes from being trained by the right electricians during your apprenticeship, the job experience at hand, and if the apprentice is a self learner (reads for more knowledge). If an apprentice gets stuck boxing for the first 2-3 years, they won't learn the trade, right!

I remember working with quite a few foreign people (from Europe, Ireland, Australia, etc.) .. I know there is some type of program in place that honors what you have already worked towards.. I would highly suggest contacting the local schooling department in regards to your questions, they will advise you before you make your move!
