I start at 45 years old as an apprentice Electrician and I was a Journeyman by age 49. I will be a Master Electrician by age 51. Good luck to all Sparky’s, it is a great Journey.
I'm glad that I found this channel and Kenneth, I'm glad you posted this. I'm on the edge of turning 50 and getting my math skills tuned up and my application ready to submit. This is really exciting.
I am a 50 year old black woman originally from Ghana. I took my aptitude test in October 2022 passed and on my way to the interview on the February 2023,my goal is to dedicate the next 20 years of my life to working as an electrician. I wanted to be an electrician since I was 8 years old, I will never forget the day my village got electricity for the first time. I thought the electricians who came to my village had performed a miracle,to me they were magicians who had turned night to day. I wanted to be like them BUT,I was a “Girl” my family told me only Boys can be electricians. In America Girls can be electricians too so at age 50 I am going to be one so help me God. I am soo fascinate by the trade.
I’m 29 and wish I listened to my uncle when I was a teenager, but glad to hear it’s not too late. We’re all trying to figure life out no matter what age.
I'm getting into it now at 37 and in an interview I said something like that and stopped myself and said "you know what? you guys would've actually hated 18 year old me, I wasn't ready for this at all and would've quit the trade."
I'm 41 and was just offered an electrician job. I spent the last decade owning a gym and sold everything because of covid. I was a plumber for 4 years and a maintenance man for 5 years before that. I think I'm going to take the job. Thanks for the insight!
Happy to hear that, Steve! ⚡️ 38 is a great time to get into the trade. You’ll still have plenty of time to be in the trade, master your skills, and teach future apprentices.
I'm 43 now, one year from journeyman test...i decided at 40 to start electrical career after lifetime of dead end sales, retail, a d hospitality jobs. I'm in better shape now the I was at 25, and feel great!! I stretch, exercise, and meditate before work everyday. This all started with my career change, which was best move EVER!
Hi Stephen. Met you last week at ISG. Loving your channel so far. Doing good work helping us hopefuls. Truly. I am 29 and approaching my 4th try later this year to get into the apprenticeship. Hoping this one will be the one for me.
I’m 54 and I’m taking my apprentice course to prepare myself to get in to the job. And I feel young enough to work at least till I’m 70 or even 75 if a still have physical capability.Stoping is dying.
46 year old man who spent 15 years in research and getting ready to start apprenticeship July 25 , was kinda nervous thought I was to old thanks so much for encouragement
there is something unbelievably valuable going into new careers at an age other than 18-22. You've actually got life experience to contribute and can be a voice of enlightenment for those younger. Doing God's work David, BZ friend
Thanks so much for making this video. I feel like it spoke directly to me. I’m 38, hate having a desk job that I’ve had for 15+ years, and have always enjoyed doing electrical work on my own home. I’m beginning the research process of my union options in my area and hope to start an apprenticeship within the next 6-12 months.
Hey Adam! I’m really happy to hear that! It’s definitely never too late to get into this trade. I was just sitting down with my foreman the other day and the two of us were talking about how fortunate we feel to be in such a great trade and what an incredible opportunity it is. I think that you’ll be really happy you got into this. Wishing you the best of luck as you start taking steps to join! ⚡️
@@MadElectrician what I’m really looking forward to is that aptitude test because I’ve been tutoring high school students for the SAT and ACT for over a decade so I’m sure I’m gonna knock that part out of the park. 😁
Applying at 25. Like others have commented, I actually think I'm going to appreciate the apprenticeship more and apply myself more diligently than if I had applied right out of highschool. I'm looking forward to getting started.
23 going on 24 and I personally feel like I’m doing this at just the right time. When I was younger than I am now, I wouldn’t have been mature enough to take it seriously. I would’ve given up during this long application process. Good video, Stephen! Love your content
Tyler, you’re the real MVP. Even though you changed your name you’ll still always be The Marvelous Malt in my book 😂 Always appreciate your support. I’ve heard a lot of people say similar things. Sometimes it’s better for people to wait a little bit before attempting to get in for that reason. I don’t know if I would have taken it as seriously either if I tried getting in straight out of high school. Having a family of my own was really motivating for me to try my best to get into the program. One of these days we’ll definitely have to meet up and grab some whisky or something. 🍻🥃
I’m 41, college educated and just got offered a position at my local IBEW in the California Bay Area. Took me 2 years and 2 interviews to get in and I’m so glad I didn’t give up!! Really looking forward to this excellent career!
I am 46 years old, and your advice in these videos has encouraged me to start getting the preparatory work done, as far as materials handler work and volunteering and extracurricular projects that reflect mechanical aptitude and an ability to work with tools, etc. your channel has proven an invaluable resource. Greatly appreciated. Every doubt that ran through my mind in the course of considering this career path, you have effectively dispelled.
I am a 56 years old journeywoman ; IBEW Local 3 New York City. I started my apprenticeship when l was 47. Here, the apprenticeship is five and a half years to finish. I got in the Local through the program NEW ( nontraditional employment for women). Being a woman in construction is not easy but the reward is great. In my Local, we have Mentoring Program and we placed journeywomen with female apprentices to guide them through the apprenticeship. Union Proud!
I have to be the counter cultural voice here, even though I know that society has been conditioned to accept "women's empowerment". I think it's good to find a way to survive, but I'm against women joining masculine lines of work. Nowadays, too many people don't care at all about femininity. They don't care about females behaving like females; they don't care about females preparing to become wives and mothers. Masculine jobs will not make a woman more feminine. Masculine jobs wll not make motherhood easier. How it's supposed to work is that the man provides and the woman performs domestic tasks at home. But today's culture completely downplays a woman's role at home, even though both roles are essential. The male role is not the same as the female role and blending those two roles has proven not to be optimal. I don't care if everyone has been trained to cheer when women take on masculine roles. That's not what built this country, it's not making women more feminine, and it's not making this country healthier.
@@savedbyhismercyandlove With the money that l make as a union electrician. I am able to support my three nieces to go through college without debt. Being a tadewomam not just benefits you finically, you will be able to help your family to have a better life. There is nothing more sad to have to go through college borrow heavily; being 22 and have at least $100,000 student loan. As l said before, being a tradewoman is not easy, but it is much better to earn your money and earn enough to make a difference in others people life.
@Mad Electrician. Thanks for posting this. Very motivational. I tested and passed for inside wireman this year at the age of 48...waiting for my interview date. It's never too late to learn a new skill!
I’m 42 and have been an accountant for 14 years. I have great benefits and pay but I’m bored out of my mind. I’m hoping to get into the 4 yr sound and telecommunications apprenticeship before I turn 43. In addition to this video, the video with your brother was also helpful because I too will be taking a big pay cut and a huge risk by switching careers especially this late in life. I just found your channel today, subscribed and will continue watching for more tips and tricks and encouragement. Thanks!
I went into the S&C side at 43. Started in November. I worked as a network field tech for the last 10+ years, so similar type of work. I was initially worried about the change, pay cut, getting in when there are students half my age, etc. But I know what the top rates are, how long it would take me to get there, plus the benefits and retirement packages are outstanding.
Im a mom of 6 i was supposed to do the course 14 years ago and didn’t work out now im going on 41 and keep asking myself if i should. I hate office work and every assessment i take put electrical as my number 1 match
@@nathalie8177 DO IT!! I just got hired on at 41 years old this week! Don’t find yourself wondering “what if”!! Give it a shot!! U have nothing to lose.
I’m in the same boat. I’m 40, been a mechanical engineer and BOREDDDD!!! I’m sick of being tied to a desk. I’m going from 100k to less than 40k. Luckily I made some other investments that will make my transition a little less painful
This was really good to hear, since I'm 37 and was considering a job switch. Although it's really tricky since the trades are SO male-dominated, so I'm not sure that it would be a good fit as a woman. But it's awesome to hear that I could finish my current career and then do an apprenticeship
21 and mainly interested in the field for being able to have a decent honest job while I figure out if I want to go to college later on, travel later, etc. So long as I'm not stuck in fast food, I'll take it. 5 years to me would give plenty of time to try practicing to use the job to build up just being independent and not needing my parents for everything.
I’m 23 looking at trade jobs and narrowed it down to become an electrician because of your videos. Hopefully I’ll nail everything and be a journeymen by 27-28 LETS GOOOOO!! PS: nice to know you’re a fellow Christian I don’t think it’s coincidence I found your page today.
LET’S GOOO!!! So awesome, I’m really happy to hear that! That would be a pretty incredible accomplishment. It’s definitely doable! It’s always nice to hear that fellow Christian’s are watching too. Hopefully my channel can be a blessing to you. Definitely not a coincidence!
Yes same here and how all of a sudden I can across your channel as well. I didnt know you were a Christian either but I knew something was up based on how you carried yourself for a young person. Just didnt seem usual for a young man to do that and well spoken. I'm also a Christian ✝️ 😁
Thanks for the insight. I am 47. I have been a trucking owner operator for 25 years. With decreasing rates, increasing fuel prices and strangling regulations I am considering the next stage in life.
My husband is 49 and has been a firefighter for 10 years and working in a plant for another 10....he is golden!!! He has his interview in a couple of weeks...
Aye man, this was really encouraging! I've been in the restaurant biz for most of my life and it's feeling like a dead end, especially with this pandemic going on! I've just been browsing around and doing some research, trying to explore my options, and your channel has been super helpful to me. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos!!
I'm 27 and I'm just getting started as a "shop helper" (i.e. laborer). I submitted my application for a non-union apprenticeship last week and keeping my fingers crossed that I'll get into the program
Union is really good for job security, some shops offer better wages. I’m currently an electrician at tesla, they gave me stock options which over the years grew to $150k+. Plus I get employee stock purchase program, and OT like a mofo!! Putting in 60+ hour weeks. I wanna say electricians top out around $70 an hour here in california. Missed out on the pension and job security, but Ima rock with tesla until I get enough hours to test for my c10 contractor license. Different route, but still #electriciangang
@@melaniaquiroz6339 my journey has been fantastic so far. I really love working with my hands and my head. There is a lot of problem solving that gets done at the job when something doesn't go according to plan.

So awesome! Love it. And you’re very welcome! That’s such a great way to get your foot in the door and improve your qualifications. I think you’ll be really happy that you chose to do that. Looking forward to hearing from you when you eventually get accepted into the program and start your apprenticeship ⚡️
I wanted to become an Electrician out of High school then decided not to. now I'm a second term apprentice and started when I was 25 and Happy I got back into the trade. I don't regret not going straight into the trade too much because of the different life experiences I have had.
Hey Rex! 33 is a great age to get in. Congrats on getting accepted into the program! It’s really a huge accomplishment 🥳 You’re very welcome. Making these videos is my absolute pleasure ⚡️
When I started my apprenticeship with IBEW Local 80s JATC (Norfolk, Virginia) back in 2002, the oldest first year apprentice in our class was 49 I believe. he retired from the air Force after 20 plus years and did several other things both before the military and after. He made it through the full 5 years and did very well. At that time at least, we did have to sign a SLA (student loan agreement) that was just what you said, you had to work out of the local for 5 years after you topped out. For those who left within that 5-year time period had to pay back the cost of a year of apprenticeship times how many years they did not give back of the five. I believe that worked out to be something along the lines of $1,800 for every year that was not "paid back". I believe they've done away with that now because of how many instances that had occurred and the legality of it in Virginia as it is a "right to work state" so because of that, the apprentices now have to pay the tuition and book cost for every year of their apprenticeship now. So if you're working out of one of the locals that still have student loan agreements, please keep in mind that for every person that does not fulfill that deal, it potentially can affect everybody that follows in those same footsteps down the road.
Hi @JaredKilgore Can you elaborate a little more on the local 80 in Norfolk please? I’m debating whether to apply for the apprenticeship program or do the electrical wiring program at TCC first. I’m a military spouse so we have only about 2 years left here before we have to PCS to a different state. Also, how does your work hours look like and do you travel outside of Hampton roads often? What’s the farthest you had to travel? Thanks in advance!
I feel like I wasted my 20s sometimes. I'll be 30 in August and I sometimes worry that I don't really have anything to show for it. I'm trying to put my best foot forward and build something I can be proud of while being an important part of my community. I passed my aptitude test now im just waiting for my interview sometime early next year. I really need a win here lol.
Hearing that the average age of a new apprentice is 29 just lifted a huge weight off of my shoulders. I was feeling crushed that it’s too late for me. Thank you man!!!
Mid twenties. Planning a career change, pretty nervous about applying for apprenticeships and following down such a long route but hopefully will all work out. Just applied for marine electrician apprentice role which I'd be really excited to get.
I’m 31 perusing an apprenticeship coming in a couple days! This video really made it clear to follow through with this career! Thanks Steven! God bless!
Hey Diego! That's so great to hear! I can honestly say that becoming an electrician has been one of the best choices that I've ever made in my life. I'm constantly so thinking to myself how thankful I am to have such a great career and be able to support my family so well. Wishing you the best of luck in your pursuit of this career. Please feel free to reach out any time with any questions. God bless you too brother!
3 months into my apprenticeship at 31! Its going great and still I'm so surprised I'm actually in the IBEW! Ive been watching this channel for some years now just hoping to get it...better late than never! Cheers ☕️
I'm 23 with an Associates Degree in Political Science and I'm currently a Manager at a Target in Vermont. I don't want to be in retail much longer and am thinking of pursuing a career as a union electrician like my uncle. Having a strong foundation for the rest of my life for when I start a family is something that's hard to find in the US these days.
Hey Randy! 23 is a great age to get into the trade! I was 22 when I got in and I'm thankful, as you said, to have a solid foundation for the rest of my life. I would highly encourage your pursuit of this trade, and I would also highly recommend going the IBEW route if you have the opportunity to do so. I appreciate you watching and I wish you the best of luck getting into the trade! ⚡️
I’m 35 with 3 kids and a wife. I start my apprenticeship tomorrow for local 354. I appreciate the advice you’ve given in all of your videos. I got accepted on my first try. I failed my algebra courses in highschool, so I had to take a 6month college course online this summer and finished it in a month. It got me ready for the aptitude test which I scored very high. After using your advice for the interview I placed 7th on the ranking list. They called me last week to start tomorrow. These videos really helped out a ton.
I’m 26, floating in life right now searching for direction. And I’ve been looking into this pathway for a career. Currently assistant manager at a lube shop, but I want to experience the feeling of accomplishment after hard work and effort on a job done by my bare hands.
So, I worked at a union shop as a payroll guy. You actually have a thing in your total package that actually pays directly into the JATC. This fund is, most of the time, paid by the contractor as part of your fringes. THAT is your paying it forward. As a Journeyman, your hours worked equals money towards apprenticeship costs for the new guys.
Just made my profile today, as a veteran is was nice that they waived the application fee.. I’m 26 with a background in Mechanics. I always enjoyed working with tools so seeing your videos really opened my eyes to this career. I started my application today and have a lot of time to complete it as fast as possible. Hoping I can be in the apprenticeship by the end of the year! Your videos have helped a lot! Being that I hope to start a family in the next four years and wanted a career that will allow me to provide for them, I am so grateful to have come across this page!
Not sure if your local will work the same way as mine with the application and testing. When I applied to my local, I had 15 days from when I received the application to send in all my required documents. They only do testing one week per year. If you do well on the testing, you'd get a letter stating that you'll have an interview. After the interview, you'd receive a letter stating if you've been accepted to the apprenticeship program. One thing that helped me with the testing was using electricprep. Cost me $50, but was well worth it. It helps with both the math and reading comprehension. Good luck!
@@SelectHawk not in NZ. You can start working at any age, but if you’re under 16 you’re just not allowed to work during school hours (semester break is exempt). My first job was a paper route when I was 10 which I don’t really count. But when I was 12 I worked as a kitchen hand
I don’t blame you for making that switch because retail sucks well grocery does anyways. I wish I would’ve finished the electrical engineering program at the community college about 6 years ago but my dumb self quit to work and only get 20 hours a week then
I’m currently 17 and turning 18 in March, I’m in my senior year of high school and my parents want me to become an engineer or an architect but I’ve been thinking it a lot because I have found out that most engineering careers are really high stress and some you might be working overtime, they want me to become an architect bc they think that architects make really good money but I have made some research and found out that they don’t really make a lot of money and they require expensive long education. I’m really thinking of becoming an electrician because you don’t have to pay for education and I can start saving and investing at a young age. I also want to be a part time dog breeder and invest my money in top bloodlines, I already own a “quality” dog and I’m about to breed her, to what I have researched breeders also make good money. I already discussed this with my parents but they still want me to go to college and be someone “big“ in life. I have been thinking of becoming an architect because I have always been a A’s and B’s student but I am tired of going to school and think that I might drop out if I decide to go to college to become an architect. What do you suggest me to do? My parents think that I have to go to college to succeed in life.
Applying at 30, will be 31 if I get in when it starts. I was going to do it 4 years ago and wish I’d stuck with it then. Need a change from the dead end, low paying office job. Very encouraging to see similar stories/age groups
Yup I'm 36 in southern cali and I'm barely starting my career as a electrician never been more excited and sure about what I wanted to be , after 15 years of warehouse to warehouse & odd jobs i found my passion wish I knew this in my 20s but I can now help the next generation in 5 years
Hi, Thank you for all the great content on your channel :-) I am looking to get an apprenticeship at the age of 41. I have spent the last 15 yrs as a Paramedic in Australia
When I was 16 I started an apprenticeship but I dropped out. At 21 I was diagnosed with mental illness and life has been a roller coaster. I’m 33 now going to an information session tomorrow for a low voltage apprenticeship. Funny thing is I’ve been accepted into the ibew twice but didn’t follow through because I didn’t study for the aptitude test.
Finished apprenticeship at 36 then started my own business and being your own boss at 41 now I’m soo happy that I made this decision quitting office job so It’s never too late, It’s all depends how bad you want it !
I started doing electrical work 5 years ago at 25, now at 30 I’m looking into unions here in Michigan, I’m also in my second year of electronics and electrical technology program. Thanks for all the videos you have up,very informative,
Hey Bandit! Right on! It sounds like you have a lot of really great experience then. I can honestly say that I think one of the biggest reasons I’m so happy with this career choice is because of how good the IBEW has been to me. I would highly suggest looking into it. You’re very welcome and I’m happy you’re enjoying them! ⚡️
That's cool that older apprentices get accepted. I spent decades as a waiter and the age discrimination is real. I actually left it behind. But I guess that's what I should've expected from a low technical skill job. I've been toying with the idea of automotive electrical as a late in life career. I love cars and will work until I die if I can help it.
I'm 38 and will be starting the apprenticeship. I've been in my current career for 16 years, I have 29 years until retirement age. That's only 1/3 of my working life in my current career, I'd much rather spend the next 2/3 as an electrician. It's definitely not too late.
Got in on the Sound and Communications side the end of last year at 43. Halfway done my 1st year and a few months away from being obligated. Couldn't be happier.
I am 48 years old and this video and the comments has given me another reason as to why I need to move forward with my decision of become an electrician. As a kid, I didn't do well in school, and because of that, FAILING is my greatest fear. I also think about what would happen If never overcame that fear, the results could be worse, and that's living the rest of my life in regret. so I thank you for this video that literally found me. 👊😎
Im 26 and I’m just waiting to take my test I heard that in my area in NY they r really short staff so hopefully I will be able to get in this and really put in some great work
I'm assuming the test will be pretty much the same. I used electricprep to help me with the test. It helped me tremendously. I believe I did extremely well on the test. They didn't tell me the score.
I will be 36 in May, thank you for sharing this video, the 441 union finally contacted me and I applied two years ago I can’t wait to get started I really hope they keep me busy.
I'm applying at 30 years old... getting tired of being a Network Engineer for computers and ungrateful companies and people. If I'm going to do something in life, at least I'm going to do something that teaches me good life lessons and is honest work.
Depending on your area, your local electrician's union may have a Sound and Communications apprenticeship. If so, the work is low voltage and/or A/V work among some other things.
Just turned 30 and I just decided to go after the IBEW apprenticeship program, to help offset my income dip in the early phases of the program I'm planning on buying, fixing and selling auction cars
I tried it out when I was 26 but unfortunately I dropped it due to mental health issues but now that I’m much better I want to give it a second try now that I’m about to turn 30
I am 55 years old and I just finished a two-year program in Electrical Maintenance and Automation. I have been thinking of applying to Local 48 Inside apprenticeship. Should I do this? I am very teachable, graduated with honors from college. I am physically capable of doing the job and I am planning on retiring in 10-13 years.
I'm 35 and looking to get into the trades. Electrical is one of the trades I'm considering. Thanks to this video it makes me feel better knowing I won't be the only "old man" doing an apprenticeship.
im 36 currently going through my term 2 of trade school, after years of doing stone work being the only guy with a license and picking up 6 guys in the morning for work, one guy smoking a joint, one guy drinking a beer, another guy doing a line every morning, at lunch i had to take 3 guys to methadone clinic so they could work the rest of the day, bottom line im 36 and im rocking my electrical apprentice!!! never too old to start something new guys!
I was 18, start electricians vocational school, and worked a couple of years in this trade. Now I am 40 and living in the USA 🇺🇸, I am happy to start apprenticeship program.
I’m 28 and currently getting experience in telecommunication wiring. Once I finish this I just need two semesters of college algebra and I can apply! Hopefully I can start applying by the time I’m at least 30
Hey, right on! That’s really cool to hear. I really don’t think it’s so much an age thing as it is about whether or not you feel like you’re capable of doing the work. If you think that you are then I don’t see any reason why 70 is too old. Some people in their 70’s wouldn’t be able to do it while others definitely could. Thanks for watching! ⚡️
31, foreman of a landscaping company. No benefits, no 401k, no paid holidays. Taking a pay cut to pursue electrician field, I start Monday. Is a $4 pay cut but I believe it will be a better life choice in the end. Iv reached the top of my current field and wrestling wheel barrels at the age of 50 with no retirement in sight sounds horrible otc.
Hey Tony! It sounds like making a switch over to becoming an electrician was the right move! I think that you'll end up being very happy with that decision. How is your first week going so far?
Just turned 20 on the 18th of this month i wanna get started but know absolutely nothing about being an electrician but I’m also a fast and good learner. I’m hoping that I’d get accepted to the ibew I’m determined to do this. I waited a year and a half to figure out what i wanna do with my life after high school and this is what it is, to go through this and become a journey man. Hopefully during the interview i could use the fact that I didn’t miss one day of high school as proof to show how determined i am to wanting to complete the job
23 right now and a high school drop out with their GED. I fully believe I am capable of achieving this. I’m going to start off as trainee for a year first so when I apply for my apprenticeship I’ll be 24 to 25.

Sincerely my respect
I am also 47 in NYC and want to take this route-Much respect to You Miss for doing this as a 47 yr old Woman!!

With the money that l make as a union electrician. I am able to support my three nieces to go through college without debt. There is nothing more sad to have to go through college borrow heavily; being 22 and have at least $100,000 student loan. As l said before, being a tradewoman is not easy, but it is much better to earn your money and earn enough to make a difference in others people life.

Plus I get employee stock purchase program, and OT like a mofo!! Putting in 60+ hour weeks. I wanna say electricians top out around $70 an hour here in california.

Good luck!

How about 70? I'm just starting out with the College program for Apprentice electrician! Kickin ass! I plan on retirement maybe at 90, or never!
I’m 35 and I’ve finally started studying math
Age 42, applied in January 2022, passed aptitude test, interview in March. Wish me Luck !
I applied and tested at 42 to the S&C side. Interviewed and started at 43. Now I'm a 2nd year. Couldn't be happier. Best of luck!
Have you taken the test yet? I used electricprep to help study. I believe bith the electrical and S&C sides take the same exam. Best of luck!
You are a great motivational speaker. I could definitely see you teaching later on.
Thanks, I really appreciate that!
Maybe someday!
23 right now and a high school drop out with their GED. I fully believe I am capable of achieving this. I’m going to start off as trainee for a year first so when I apply for my apprenticeship I’ll be 24 to 25.
i started at 18, i’m 19 now and couldn’t be happier about my decision
Wow, that's awesome Ethan!
It's a fantastic trade to be in and I'm happy to hear that you're enjoying it so far!
