What a master player and teacher! I bought your books: Let’s go camping and Advanced Coordination for Drumset and Hand, both are great books and a vast ocean of drumset resources to explore and learn. A huge hug from Cordoba, Spain.
Really amazing Rick. Airto was the guy that made it possible to understand and plug into small group and big band samba. Gottlieb and Wertico helped me apply to modern jazz songs and arrangements of Metheny's charts. Kiko Freitas inspires me to bring a more authentic yet modern approach. You explain it so well. So good man! Thanks.
Wow, practicing the samba ride that's on the last three 16ths of the beat, and the one that starts on the last 16th is opening a whole new world of coordination for me. I was a bit embarrassed to have neglected those ones so much. Great video and teaching!
Hi Gary Thanks for watching and for emailing me the picture of Gene. I just did a video on the Slingerland Gene Krupa. Snare. Watch for that this weekend. He was my dads favorite drummer and he saw him in NYC many times with Benny Goodman.
Hey Gary I'm also 68 and have been playing since age 14. I've had the privilege of opening for some greats like Elvin Bishop, Fleetwood Mac, Cold Blood, Canned Heat Buddy Miles. But I've been loosing my taste for drumming.Maybe that's why I'm watching this to respark my interest.
Hey Rick! Edu Ribeiro is very good indeed. He is from my hometown in southern Brazil (Florianópolis) :D But if you don't mind let me suggest you also Luciano Perrone (he was one of the first drumset players in Brazil - 30s/40s), Edison Machado (most famous record Edison Machado é samba novo), Milton Banana (mainly with his Milton Banana Trio), these two considered the creators of samba, bossa for drumset in the late 50s and 60s...from the modern ones there is also Kiko Freitas (mainly with João Bosco). By the way I enjoy your channel and videos, thanks!!!
Thanks for the comment Henry. I am aware of those players and they are great and innovative as well. Thats why I listed all those artists in my description because some of the drummers you are mentioning played with them. There are about 20 more that we could talk about. Similar to American jazz drumming where you have the big names and then so many more great players who don't get the international attention they deserve.
@@rickdior I'm glad you heard about them already. Usually here in Europe where I live nowadays I meet drummers who are not aware of some of them, and as you said although some of them are not known overseas, they made, make great contributions to the style. All the best and thanks!
Rick, You probably don't remember me, but years ago we met at Amos's at a Hannah gig. I was one of Bill's students and you were kind enough to let me set in. Your playing left a lasting impression and me, And I want to thank you for the wisdom and your approachable demeanor. It's good to see you are still teaching and playing.
Hi David I do remember you. I know you used to come into the club often and sit in. It's been many years. So good to hear from you and I hope you are well and still playing.
You’re an excellent player and teacher… Thank you for sharing this video. I teach drums as well. Latin is not my strong area so I am grateful I came across your video. 🥁👍🏻
Beleza! Maybe next time mention Erivelton Silva, Rosa Passos's immaculate drummer, and Paulo Braga, on the must-have, eternal Elis and Tom album. Also Robertinho Silva, a great Brazilian jazz drummer. And even Joao Palma, who taught us all when he was with Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66. Obrigado, Rick!
@@rickdior hi Rick, emailed a few days back but not heard back. Please let me know if you didn’t receive, it’ll have my name in it for easy searching. Thanks, Curtis.

Yessssss. I hear that in my head - I have to get it from head to my hands. I am SO not coordinated.
Hi Mary
LOL--- I feel the same way sometimes....you just have to work through it slowly and you will get it.
I love Rick's AUTOMATIC click.
We need to fish around for the best sound but you Sir definitely do not.
I'm jealous how you AUTO click perfectly.
Wow, so great!
Nice man.. Tnx
I can’t wait to try these. Should keep me busy for months. Great job !!! Rick, which one of them is your top 3 faves to play?
Hi Brian
I use cymbal pattern #'s 4, 5, and 7 (from page 21) most often. These resemble the Brazilian Pandiero patterns.
Great lessons🥁🤟
Excelente video !!!
