You’ll get it mate! A good exercise is to practice playing 16th note singles on the snare and then move your kick from downbeats to dotted 8ths to groups of 5 to groups of 7 to practice playing your kick on right and left hands! I’m coincidentally sending this exercise out to my email list next week so feel free to join by downloading the notation for free in the description and I’ll send you the notation on Tuesday! Alex 🤜
I love the way you broke down this groove and then built it back up so we could understand things easier instead of just slowing down the original groove and calling it a video
Our friend here makes great kids, but there's loads of people who do too. I'm not sure who else you're wasting time watching that you feel so cheated 🤔
All three were so good and tight on the piece. I was stunned when I first heard the interpretation. Actively watched the video and listened about 40 to 50 times. Non musician myself but I heard it as near flawless. Those three are a spectacular trio.
Absolutely excellent lesson, mate, you're a great teacher! This Night in Tunisia trend is one of the better things social media brought us this year. I hope it shows many beginner drummers the beauty of odd time signatures, there's an entire universe to discover. That metric modulation is nasty, too. xD
I always counted it 1 2 3 4 5 61, which is a little confusing to type out but i just hear it as 5 “long” notes and one “short” note, long being quarter and short being 8th. Kind of how balkan dances in odd time signatures are taught in fast and slow steps, fast usually being a 2 subdivision and slow being 3?? hard to explain in a youtube comment but it helps me internalize the groove without having to think about it
Alex, after having followed you for quite some time I decided to get your two ebooks and as I went through the grooves I scrolled back to your old videos for the respective songs; having the direct comparison of your first videos and now is such a difference - I think your videos were always really good, but now it's really just next level. Your song selection, detailed yet comprehensible explanations, editing and in general your approach to approach a new groove is the best I've come across over the years. I wish you lots of success for the future and thank you so much for all the hard work you put in so far!
Ah thanks so much for the kind words mate! I have been working hard to improve the video quality & editing as well as focusing on the drumming side of things! Stoked you noticed! And thanks for grabbing the ebooks mate, some gnarley grooves in there - let me know how you get on with them! Alex 🤜
the final off-kilter groove near the end is one of the cooler things i wish more drummers would experiment with, the malleability of time and the insane stuff you can pull off with a little bit of that borrowed time feel. Great + informative video, your interpretation and control of time + sound quality is really impressive
Great video and explanations! It just feels a bit weird to me not tu use the 3-3-3-2 subdivision for the eleven. Mainly because that's what I hear the piano melody on. But in general great work man! I will try to learn this groove now :D
I might see it as 3-3-2-3, but that's in isolation. I still see it in terms of "groups of 2 or 3 (or sometimes 4)" as that's really the only tool I have for dealing with this. But I'm not a drummer either, I just flail at an electronic kit at a slow tempo and cherry pick the parts I get right. 😅
Geez. I really wanna play along to this instead of just listening, but I'm not awake enough for 11/8 right now. 😅 (Starts singing while making coffee.) That bassline is a critical assist for me.
Amazing video, I’m having a problem with speeding up the first 3 notes but I can play the rest of it at song tempo. Anyone have any tips for the Rll I’m having trouble with the feeling of hitting the hh and second ghost note.
At a slow tempo you can cave-man it and you might be tempted to try and work that for a while but at any sort of speed it's gonna have to be a double stroke. So the first thing is to make sure you have solid left hand doubles on their own. Then work that with just the hats until you get it locked in. That's most of the work. Kick is a relatively easy add at that point cause it's just the gaps.
Hey mate, it is fast so will take some time but this reply from @benrichards227 is good advice! I would practice doubles and also RLL triplet grooves to build up your left hand and then of course the exact phrase from the track! Keep going and you’ll get it mate! Alex 🤜
Loved the video! Also I thought the metric modulation part was cool, but I can't tell if this is actually what's being played or not. Notice that the modulation is played after they move to a 3/4 meter so it might not be what they are playing. If somebody knows for sure what they are playing I'd be happy to hear
It’s the same modulation but they go from 3/4 to 4/4. So 2 bars of 3/4 would have 8 dotted 8th notes in total so they phrase them as standard 8th notes! Whereas I just forced it over the 11 section for fun haha. Thanks for watching! Alex 🤜
It took 24 years to get it down in 20 mins if that makes sense haha. But the modulation took a little longer to work out! Keep going & you will get it mate! Alex 👊
FYI, metric modulations are not the same as tempo modulations... although they are done in the same way, switching tempo with metric modulation demands a lot of technique and taste!
Great & thanks for highlighting (and giving credit) to the original artist 👌🏻🤩 And if anyone want another great groove: I give you “Vital Transformation”: ruclips.net/video/u3ADv-gGqYs/видео.htmlsi=vYAn8sk0IOlT67UQ
That bit at the end reminds me of the joke "everything is in 4/4 if you're determined enough."
Yo seriously. I’m glad he put it at the very end so we could understand the rules of this groove better before breaking them. Masterful!
Hahaha totally
Haha for real!
he made it into 7/4 tho
That kick and snare on the e of 3 is really throwing me off for some reason

The only one drummer on RUclips who is concerned about making great content, and not just wasting minutes just to monetize his videos. Thanks dude
Our friend here makes great kids, but there's loads of people who do too. I'm not sure who else you're wasting time watching that you feel so cheated 🤔

Appreciate you man! 🙏
Finally a tutorial on this I was trying to wrap my head around but it wasn't working 😅
All three were so good and tight on the piece.
I was stunned when I first heard the interpretation.
Actively watched the video and listened about 40 to 50 times.
Non musician myself but I heard it as near flawless.
Those three are a spectacular trio.
Man your content is killer and the little solo/groove thing in the end shows that you really can play! Nice man!!!!

Sick! I’m hearing a few different ways of counting it I hadn’t thought of in the comments! Sick work! Alex 🤜
Yep - that's blown my mind.
🤜

1:30 i typically find myself doing a mix of the two styles mentioned - alternating between counting to 6, then 5
Incredible!
8:41 maybe an opportunity to flip the dotted 8ths to be the beat and have the 3/4 kick sounding like Half-Note-Triplets?
That sounds like a 9 cut into triplets, that's a fascinating groove when broken down. Good disguise of an 11, that's well tuned!
So good! Thanks for the break down and call out Alex! ❤
Yes mate! Thanks for sending it my way 🔥
yoooooo looking dashing my guy! This channel is one of the most consistent and dope on yt, always glad to see a vid drop!!
Appreciate the kind words mate! Stoked you enjoyed it Ed! 🤜
Great video and explanations!

Sick, yeah hadn’t thought of it that way but makes sense too! I can’t unhear it the way I taught it here now though haha! Alex 👊

It's a great arrangement by Molina, but let's not forget the original straight-ahead OG version from jazz king Dizzy Gillespie!
The classic 🔥

DRUMMING HARD
FYI, metric modulations are not the same as tempo modulations... although they are done in the same way, switching tempo with metric modulation demands a lot of technique and taste!
if the meter's odd, and you want common, just _dilla_ til the meter's even
I that blows your mind the you haven't listened to a lot of music have you?
11 over 4 is very close to a dotted eight pattern in 4
👏
🤜
Check out 11:50 one of the coolest things ever you're welcome.
🙏
I'd count it as 3 groups of 3 and a group of 2
🔥
See: Tigran
Or 2 bars 4/4 and one 3/8. Zappa’s band used to performe many jams in 11, 13, 21… always counting using this kinda reasoning. Nice work!!
Nice! Learning a few ways of counting it from the comment section I hadn’t thought of 💪
Gained a sub
Stoked to have you in the crew mate! Alex 🤜
damn
🤜
Great & thanks for highlighting (and giving credit) to the original artist 👌🏻🤩
And if anyone want another great groove: I give you “Vital Transformation”:

And if looking for someone who mastered playing in 11. Then check out Baard Kolstad in Leprous “The Sky is red” 👌🏻😅
🙏
sounds like shark chum
😂
watch claus hesslers version of it
1) Girls can't play drums.
2) It is very hard to convey sarcasm in the comment section.
1. karen carpenter, sheila e, viola smith
2. i see your point
@The_GreenHub Cindy Blackman...
thats not a blast beat?!?!?!?
