  • Here is a video on the push-pull hand technique as applied to playing jazz.
    I have already done a video on this technique as applied to different drum set styles. You can find that here: • Push Pull Hand Techniq...
    This technique works great for playing multiple notes in a row with different feels and spacing. It is very elastic as you see in the video.
    I show you the different ways I apply this technique to my jazz playing as well as some coordination exercises to help you develop it on the drum set.
    The exercises in this video are from my book Advanced Coordination for Drum Set and Hand Percussion. You can order it from me at rickdior@gmail.com
    The drums used in the video are Gretsch Centennial from 1983.
    The sizes of these drums are: 18"x14" bass,10",12",14" toms and a 14"x 6.5" snare. The cymbals in this video are all 1940's- 1960's K Zildjian except for a a Paiste 22" swish.
    Cymbal sizes
    21" ride
    18"crash/ride w/rivets
    16" crash
    15" Hi Hats
    22" Paiste swish/china with rivets
    The drum heads are all calf skin.
    Microphones are a AKG C24 stereo overhead and an Shure Beta 52 on the Bass drum.

    It’s worth mentioning that many metal drummers use push-pull for consistent and stupid fast ride and snare patterns. Like 300 bpm 16th note patterns.
    With that aside, *what a beautiful drum set, truly just stunning in every way. The lush sounds, the ornate yet not over stated shells. hardware, and cymbals.*
    Just a sight to behold.

    Man, you are so... effortless! Amazing. I've been working on this technique pretty hard for over a year now, and it's really hard to get it over a certain tempo. And then, I can do it by itself, but holding it down while playing a groove, that's a whole 'nuther challenge!
    Good demo, great technique, thanks!

    Great video. Thanks again for the tip to buy jumper cable bags for tambourine and it looks like so many other drumset or percussion items. Got mine from Menards today for $4.44 a bag. Tony liked those high pitched drums. Wish I could find those Roy Haynes small hand cranked timpani he used.

    Do you suspect Tony Williams used this technique on the song "Fred" from the "Believe It" record? If not then how could he have kept that much stamina and power so effortlessly?

    • @rickdior
      @rickdior  2 года назад

      Tony used lots of fingers and had tremendous hand strength. I never saw him use this type of push pull but that does not mean he didn't.
      As to power and stamina...It's TONY WILLIAMS!!!

  • @glennracoma7481
    @glennracoma7481 3 года назад

    That sounds fantastic. How lose is your left traditional grip. It looks as if the stick is almost coming off of the fingers yet very stable. Thank you for great demonstration on the push pull technique.

    • @rickdior
      @rickdior  3 года назад

      Very loose and relaxed. It's in in the bounce.

  • @patrickberkery8854
    @patrickberkery8854 3 года назад

    I thought your Tony Williams impression was great! Tony seemed to advocate holding the stick in the back fingers of the hand. Did he open/close with that grip? That would seem very loose, but could also explain how he got those really open, resonant sounds.

    • @rickdior
      @rickdior  3 года назад +2

      Hi Patrick
      His technique changed quite a bit in the later years after he started the Jazz Fusion movement. He was playing much louder in this period. You can see him using his finger technique on some later videos with his own Jazz group. I saw him many times in New York and he did indeed play with a looser grip with small groups that were not as loud. His ride cymbal playing was a beautiful thing to behold.
