• How I Learned to Play ...
Here is a lesson on developing up-tempo playing in the jazz genre.
I have gotten a lot of requests for a video talking about this topic so I hope that this hits the mark.
The drums are Gretsch Centennial with calf heads.
The cymbals are original Constantinople K's with a Paiste traditional flat ride and a Paiste 602 flat ride (for close ups)
The microphone is a vintage AKG C24. Видеоклипы
Wow, Rick, You're an amazing drummer and a great teacher.
With all I could watch, I spend a lot of time here.
Currently learning all I can about jazz for free and RUclips and found this very helpful. Btw the kit sounds so good. Was watching on my phone and was even impressed. That ride
Rick, thank you for all these wonderfully lucid and helpful videos. So many of us who love the drums, especially in the jazz context, have benefitted - or stand to benefit - from all your experience, and your ability to communicate essential information. You have done a great service to any who aspire to play jazz drums! I think Joe passed the torch to a worthy protege.
Thanks Eric
Rick is the first guy I've heard talk about the difference in cymbal weights affecting how you have to play to handle the cymbal. I am a big proponent of this and I caution alot of guys that think they can come from a 2800 gram flat ride down to a 1900 gram and still use the same technique. Great stuff Rick!
That is just so impressive, it sounds so clean, and so difficult to sound that good. 👍🙂
Awesome! I can’t wait to watch this again.
great playing, smooth and great dynamic range
incredible! thank you so much for sharing your immense knowledge and skill!!
That was a very inspiring lesson. Thank you!
What an amazing video. I wish I could have found this a long time ago.
WOW !!! You sound so great, Rick !!! I really loved the “1/4 triplet-ish” left hand snare idea. Beautiful playing & video. Thanks
Great teacher great drummer!
Love the ride… Sounds so sweet... troy from nj 👍🏻🥁👍🏻.
Great lesson thanks! It's really helpful that you gave a clear and organized approach to building not just the ride speed but incorporating the rest of the kit as well!
Very nice Sir. I really love that ride cymbal sound.
Excellent teaching and instruction thankyou so much Rick
Great to hear you mention Art Taylor! I'm a fan as well, loved his cleaner feel and technique. He also could trade fours and eights all day long and never repeat himself. Thanks and I really enjoy all your videos.
so relax... love his drumming
You're a great communicator, thank you! You got my sub!
thanks! your videos are fantastic!
When I get to high speeds like this I tend to not play as much it helps me concentrate
beautiful drumming sir. most excellent
Thanks Kelvin
I really appreciate that.
Thanks for watching
phenomenal playing by the way!
Great playing.🥁🔥
Amazing. Great info.
This video is amazing.
Beautiful! Rick Thank U!
Thank You so much. I found out I was trying to do it backwards with the hand motion , not good. So much more relaxed now !!
dennisfromflorida backwards how? i want to make sure i’m not hurting my wrists too lol
Really helpful, thank you ! 🙏
Rick I just came across your channel. This is fantastic. Your kit sounds wonderful and you just taught me something that’s a potential breakthrough: to accent the third
note of the triplet pattern on ride, rather than accenting the first note 👍🏻 looking forward to exploring your channel
Hi Scott
So glad I could help you.
Great teaching, thanks!
Wow - u r an incredible jazz drummer. I wish u lived in New Orleans so I could study under u.
Just discovering your stuff now. Where have I been all this time!
You are an awesome player.
Thank you Greg.
Hi Rick, I love your stile and sound. You are one of my favorite drummers of all time. I am an older person trying to become proficient On the drums, you are an incredible educator. Always a airing to watch your next video.. great job
Thank You Darion
Thanks for the awesome videos
Your welcome. Thanks for watching Alex
Thanks a lot very useful and very generous with information
I watched this video several times. Rick’s explanation of his technique is slightly different than Riley’s but very very similar. However, if anyone is ever able to see Riley’s hands move on a fast ride pattern in one of his videos, it’s moving exactly like Rick’s. Really exercising the “drop-catch” with that slight hand rotation makes all the difference. Not to mention it can be used in so many situations not just 300 BPM jazz patterns. Very very nice explanation and great video. I really liked it and have it saved. Rick... for future reference, do you do Skype lessons? I like to pick up a lesson here and there.
Great teacher......
Great video. You teach well.
Fantastixc exercises.thanks you.
Absolute master
Great job
awesome. thanks so much!
Thank you very much.

Erstklassig!! Vielen Dank
une finesse eblouissante que de travail derriere tout cela pour arriver a une telle maitrise avec autant de personnalité aussi
Hi Rick, I've been inspired by your videos both rudimental and now your set lessons. Thanks! I would love to pass on to you a recording of a genius player and teacher, needless to say I studied with this guy for years... now gone, a Los Angeles drum guru by the name of Richard Wilson. All of us students out here admired him and I think you might too. I'll email you a download link! Cheers!
daaaaaamn this intro is greaaaaaaaat!
Right on!
Nice !
Thank you!...
Thank you :).
Im having problems. I can get the three bounce. But I’m using my fingers to control everything. I understand bringing your wrist back to keep a fluid motion for tempo, but bouncing the stick and cash it with the fingers. I guess it’s just going to take time I played rock music, which is pretty much straight for a long time and then I learned about the triplet and it’s theories and that’s has help a-lot too. I was just going to say I like brother beat down that does this videos but I think yours has the best and thorough us explanation. I have a hard time seeing the fingers up under the hand because sometimes the finger can pull the stick, and sometimes it can be grabbed.
Great instruction Rick. Future reference, boost your volume. Hard to hear you talking.
Thanks Ron
I will try to talk louder in the future. You may want to try using headphones since I tend to talk quietly or mumble most of the time.
Art was a giant.
It is so cool 😎 😎 😎 😎 😎 😎 greetings from germany Christoph 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍
👍🙂Sweeeeeeeeet!!!
Yessir 🎶❤️🎶❤️🎶
as an extreme metal drummer whose blasted at 260/270 bpm and has good finger/wrist technique playing continuously for long periods, im really struggling with the jazz ride with that 'missing 16th' as i think of it....
Goddamn that intro, what I gotta do to know how to do that
Wonderful, and so swingin’! Thank you 🙏🏽. I’m on this path now and hearing you describe your development was a good affirmation for me. Question: In your development, did you ever get any shoulder or neck issues/discomfort from going at it a lot? If so, what worked for you for managing this? (I know you’re not a Dr. Just general things.)
Hi
Thanks for the kind words.
I do not have those issues. If you learn to relax your shoulders head and neck and avoid playing with a stiff arm you will be able to avoid most if not all drumming related muscle and skeletal issues. Try to use good posture and not to sit for too long at one time. I take lots of breaks and stand up often. Work to let the stick rebound off the drum instead of hammering it into the drum. The same goes for your feet. Some muscle and skeletal issues are hereditary and caused by non-drumming activities. Playing in a very relaxed manner will make it possible to play with these types of issues. I do have hereditary arthritis but I have no problem playing 8 or more hours a day. In fact, I feel like drumming helps this issue, once I get warmed up.
Great feel. Do you hear everything from the 1 regardless of 2&4?
Beautiful Rick. Tell me about that ride cym pls?
Thanks, to learn about the cymbals watch this ruclips.net/video/lOQJAM-awEk/видео.html
Really enjoyed this video, Rick!
So it’s basically a push pull stroke, but with 2 notes on the down stroke and a regular upstroke? Does this also work the other way around or with the Moeller stroke? How did you manage to get that clarity on the double note (because that’s nothing but rebound, isn’t it?)?
Dominik
Hi Dominik
It is just rebound with a little finger push on the 2nd note. Very relaxed.
It has nothing to do with the Moeller technique which is an entirely different stoke. I will be posting a new video in a few weeks which shows them both so look out for that.
@@rickdior Wow, thank you so much, Rick! Can’t wait for the new video, the notification bell is always active. Have a nice day!
Great Video Rick!! Very informative!! Where are you from?
Hi Ben
I'm from NYC originally but I am in Charlotte NC now.
Que du talent derrière tellement de travail j imagine..... le swing le vrai élégant créatif tout avance j adore ; what else ! la class man ! bravo
Awesome Rick thanks!
How do you do 5 notes in a row ala Tony? Is it drop 4 notes and one clinch at the end? Or drop 2 catch 1 plus drop 1 catch 1? Or drop catch drop catch drop? Thanks for all you do!
Hi Wayne
I drop 2, while its still in motion I use my fingers for 2 and then the 5th note is a clinch.
Thanks for watching
wow
Is that really picked up by just one mic? Mindblowing.
I can’t find it for sale anywhere, is there a similar mic?
Hi
The mic is an AKG C24 Stereo microphone which is a very special microphone. It is one mic that has 2 capsules that can be rotated to give you different stereo patterns.... in this case it is set in a traditional cardioid X/Y pattern above my head. It is a vintage mic that is no longer available although you can probably find a used one. This is an old tube mic. A substitute could be a Royer stereo ribbon mic, a Neumann SM 69, or if you are on a tight budget a Shure VP88. You can use two separate cardioid mics in an X/Y setup to achieve a similar result. I like using a minimal mic setup for recording jazz drums since it eliminates the phase problems associated with using several microphones. You do have to make sure that you play with a balanced sound. The mic hears what you hear so if a part of the kit is too loud or soft it won't sound right.
None of my videos are mixed or edited and there is no sound manipulation so recording like this makes it fast and easy for me.
It’s a stereo version of a C12
Hi Rick, tried to find your videos of Wilcoxon, I only found one on RUclips, the other ones seems to be missing.
If you search Wilcoxon on my channel over 100 solos will come up.
There are also 2 playlists for 2 of his books

Im lefthanded but always been playing like a normal right lead. Up to when i discovered i couldnt play that fast tempos with my right hand and changing to left lead kind of feel "to late". So can you play that fast with Your left hand?
Yes I can but it's not nearly as comfortable.
What is the gram weight of your main ride!! Sounds beautiful!!!
If you watch my Jazz Ride Cymbal video and read that description you will find all of the cymbal weights in grams. Thanks
Hello. I play the cymbal, look right? the video is on my page. and I also don’t know how to play bass drum and snare drum tell me
Which sticks are those? I need to learn to play this 💪
Those are sticks that Vic Firth makes for me. More or less its a bolero tip and an sd9 shaft with some modifications.
@@rickdior Maple sd9?
whats the fast miles record youre reffering to?
Four and More
There is a ballad part of the record and then a part with up tunes like So-What and Seven Steps to Heaven
RIP FOR THOSE WHO HAD B8 CYMBAL HARD AND USED ONLY FOR ROCK LIKE MINE 😢😢😢
I used to ride on a Solar cymbals that costed 40 bucks. It doesn't matter what you use when you get started.
Hi, do u take lessons??
Well, I give lessons but I don't take them anymore.
Thanks
@@rickdior oops!! Sorry I meant do you give private lessons. I would be interested to learn jazz drumming.
