Another thing Rob is doing here that he didn’t mention, but is super cool and important is: notice that throughout the fills he continued time with the hi hat. I think a lot of us go into a fill and everything else just kind of stops. It makes a huge difference that he plays these fills while the high hat continues on two and four! Git it Beatdown!

As opposed to seeing straight on , you can see his hands better. Just watching hands. Wrists, fingers is a lesson in itself that you see proper comfortable form. How little movement or how large movements are where they happen and why. Plus I'm always amazed at the comping and how it stays fluent buts always changing like a conversation or creative dialogue / monologue.
I would love to hear a swing lasting 15 mins repeating 2/3 hours so I could sleep listening to this. The ride sound is so mesmerising!
Rob, this lesson is exceptional for someone at my level. I’m a mediocre drummer (at best) that recently decided to start studying jazz drumming. I’ve been working on independence exercises and basic grooves, but was kind of lost when it came to fills. Now I have something to work on that isn’t too intimidating, but will still take a lot of practice to perfect. And the FRL FRL one helped me find a weak spot with my independence while trying to maintain the 2 and 4 on the hats. You have become my favorite drum teacher on RUclips. @@jiyanmehta7250 Thomas Lang to me is the king of limb independence and he has a Chanel as well as being on many other drum Chanel’s . If humans had more limbs he could play a complex jazz groove and a hard driving metal beat requiring double bass simultaneously while he’s also walking and chewing gum lol. He does show some exercises etc on limb independence .
And something tells me Beatdown got the hook up on them ribs.
I guess having a Bar-B-Que thermometer is a must for my drumming hahhaha

This is so good. I have been playing for about 40 years, and was taught by a Jazz drummer, but never fully studied Jazz. This video is so helpful to me. The metronome count is crazy. I already play a lot of these patterns, but the emphasis you put on the beat is a game changer. Thanks for sharing!
I'm a guitarist. But I watch these lessons, plus bass, keyboard, vocal, etc. videos because I'm a musician. Even if I can't really play those other instruments as well as guitar, I still want to know how they work and how the musician playing them thinks. It can only help me.

I realize that alot of this type of content on your channel is geared at helping beginner/intermediate drummers get the feel of different type of techniques. I've been playing almost 33 years and I FUCKING WATCH THESE, of course I usually already know the concept you're going to be teaching. In many cases, I've been doing it for years and years. The reason why I watch them is for two reasons. Actually 3. the first is, sometimes you drop a gold nugget I've never even heard of, which is worth watching just for that. 2. You often have an entertaining, matter of fact approach to explanation that helps even long-time drummers gain new perspective on some of the stuff that we know, but haven't really thought of from the perspective you're showing, and any drummer who's been playing more than 1 day will know how valuable a fresh perspective is on the kit... and LASTLY, your demonstrations are so expertly done that EVEN IF there's no gold nugget, and EVEN IF your approach is from a similar perspective as how I approach whatever it is, that the expertise and professionalism and quality along with that beat down feeling is literally worth the watch. Also, I guess a bonus reason is when you occasionally get a little off topic and drop some new perspective on something different than the exercise at hand, which is always welcome. Keep up the good work.

I've been drumming for 30 years. I kinda stopped for around 10. The last 10 has just been fucking around. I had intence study with a New York Jazz Drummer from New York in Sydney where I'm from. He passed away 10 years ago and I was devastated. He was 86 when he passed, his name is Jack Savage. I had already learned the basics of Drumming when I was 18. Just the beginner stuff, practice pad and learning 1/4s, 1/8ths and 16th's etc.
I got by with the basics in a rock band for a long time, but after that I wanted to progress. So I seeked local teachers and found Jack. I spent about 3 years with him with a lesson once a week every Wednesdaynight at Glebe NSW Sydney Australia.
He started me on Stick Control etc and The Drummers Cookbook which he made me play all the exercises 8 ways, it was a major head fuck, but I was disciplined and respected Jack IMMENSELY. Then he asked me to get Louie Bellsons book and Jim Chapins. I was then introduced to Jazz.
Another major major headfuck, but I persevered.
I went through all of those books from head to toe. I must admit it was a huge challenge, but without the Cookbook and his 8 different ways to play it, I would be had no hope learning Independence. I'm so grateful with my the time I spent with Jack.
Recently I got myself an Alesis strike pro kit, so I can practice at all hours.
I'm a professional spray painter by day and when I come home I pull out all Jacks old books.
Jazz drumming is sincerely an Art form and as u said, u can spend a life time studying it.
I'd be interested to know your back ground to learning this craft ???

Yes, I’m learning it’s a very different type of language. I think you just first really gotta get your counting down and just completely understand the subdivisions first or at least a decent amount cause that’ll help you comprehend the different stickings you’re about to be hit with; also limb independence is a very good asset.

Rob - Awesome. You are right about getting a lot of mileage out 5 basic stickings. Your sticks seem to almost “float” during the fills - just touching the head enough to activate each drum. Great feel and touch - excellent comping as well. It’s a pleasure to watch you play. BTW those Yamaha Phoenix drums are their top of the top....an exquisite set.

Thank you Rob, because of you I discovered for the first time in my life the technique about the methronome in the last note of the triplet and it is very useful to help me to think swing. It caused a revolution in my swing thinking when I am playing.

I have played drums for over 60 years I love all kinds of drumming. Buddy Rich Bonham any drummer you can lean from, there is always something that another drummer plays that you pick up on,Rob has a great feel and great sound , the bow of the ride is used to great effect most important is what you don't play has much has what you do, working doubles with the left hand against the right hand is a good way of getting the hands working together, good work Rob great drumming

Brother Rob, this seriously helped me a WHOLE LOT! Thank You! I'm a lifelong Gospel/Hip Hop drummer, so anything pertaining to that style - I'm good. But a lot of people don't understand just how different of a language the jazz vocabulary is. We have to think differently and it can only be faked so much LOL! I still get a lot of calls for jazz gigs, but I'm not personally where I want to be and this blessed me. Definitely taking this with me to shed!

Probably have as much Jazz and Swing in my music collection as Rock so thank you Rob for this. Seeing from the side angle helps me understand more of what the drummers are doing, especially with the left hand. Need to spend more time watching and playing along with you. Of course, one of the simplest fills would be - snare hit, tom tom hit, and kick hit, on "a4 1". That is, on the "a", snare, the 4th beat, tom, and the next 1st beat, the kick - be sure the kick "accents" before you go back to the swing groove again. Even without the traditional cymbal crash ending, this fill still makes you pay attention. (the "a" is on the 3rd triplet of the 3rd beat.)
Good lesson again ,i suggest play the fill along more slowly it just a bit confusing sometimes.
