Any time that I have trouble getting in the groove, I just put on my Loud and Proud Beatdown t- shirt and everything comes back together naturally.
Perfect, a really simple introduction to jazz swing. Thanks beatdown! 🤟
According to some guy I talked to on reddit this is not only not a cheat but it's the proper way to learn jazz
Rob, in all honesty, it doesn't matter what your lesson topic is, if your teaching the lesson, then I'm watching! You are the BEST!!! Thanks and Blessings
While the spangalang is in the shop. That is funny.
Thanks, Rob! My wife has been asking me to play some jazz beats and since I told her my swing sucks - this might be the key! Looking forward to trying.
Mr. Rob Brown the master. always relevant drumming information
Thanks, man 🙂👊🏾
@@RobBeatdownBrown thanks Rob love jazz swing.
@@RobBeatdownBrown thanks Rob love swing jazz.
Wow! What an incredible lesson! I’ve been playing 1 2 a 3 4 a 1 with right hand comping since the 70’s and I’ve never seen this technique before. How incredibly cool!
This is why I watch RUclips. Rob takes complex ideas and distills them down to manageable, accessible and inspirational practical solutions. Makes me want to practice and get better. An international musical treasure!
Definitely no doubt in my mind why i tune in. Thanks again Rob
Another great experience. Thank you Rob 😎🥁
So glad I found this!! I was wondering where in the swing beat to make the snare ghosts and pops come in. Now I know because of you. Great lesson!!! Thank you
Nice Job, Rob. I just found the channel and I appreciate your easygoing style. Best of luck!
Finally knowing how to play drums for a different genre just by watching this video. Thank you so much!
ExtremeDude learning as many genres as u can is the best way to improve 🤘🏽
@@CyMBoLiK33ViBeZ BEST ADVICE EVER!
Thanks it can certainly help to get past the bridge of speed thanks j
Wow. Amazing. I've seen swing video after swing video and nobody has broken it down to its simplest form as fast as Dr. Beatdown.
Thanks Rob!
@1:11 you had me weak with "there is an alternative to playing that, that you can actually play in any type of jazz situation that will help you SOUND good while your spang-a-lang is in the shop." HAHAHA that's the best line ever. Period. I'm done with the internet now. I'm cancelling my isp tomorrow.
Spangalang is in the Shop. That's your next t-shirt! You're a genius Rob! Thanks
Thank you Sensei Rob! Will be working on this this afternoon!
I think this is just was I needed right now. Thanks.
Your style of explaining gives the feeling that drumming is totally easy … just great. Therefore I like your videos. Thx and greetings from Germany.
I’m so glad I found your site thankyou so much you break things down beautifully
Great lesson Rob...thanks! Your cymbals sound amazingly nice by the way!
Hi Rob, I want to discuss one thing. I know you are teaching spang-a-lane, and this is a well know thing in jazz. But I've seen Peter Erskine somewhere speaking pretty much against it as a way to learn the jazz ride pattern. In his view it's wrong, because it sort of creates a three-note grouping, where rythmically there is no three-note grouping. Peter was saying that the starting point are the quarter notes, is he starts by playing them rather even, just like a bass player playing a walking bass line with even quarter notes. The hi-hat added places an accent on two and four. And then the jazz ride ride pattern is built by adding what he calls a leading-in note on the up-beats, which are the last notes of the triplet, also called the skip notes because they can be skipped or they skip in the bar. Usually the the skip notes are on 'let' of 2 and 'let' of 4 (counted 1-trip-let, 2-trip-let, etc.).But they can be added anywhere in the bar, on let of 1, let of 3, all four notes, which gives us a shuffle, etc. So, it's more important to grasp the triplity of jazz, rythm, master the steady quarter note pulse, practice the eighth swung notes, practice the triplets, with both hands, alternating, RRR-LLL-RRR-LLL, RLR-LRL-RLR-LRL, RLL-RLL-RLL-RLL, RLL-RLR-RLL-RLR, etc. then take it to the cymbal, rather than go with a short cut of spang-a-lane, that has no rythmic representation. What do you think?
good teaching and fully reachable and applicable. Thanks.
Wow this video came right on time my brother made it to intermediate now the lesson I have move up to jazz and my swing...well let's just say yes I needed some help thank you for the lesson 👍
Rob I have find your drumming lessons excellent and I only tune to your channel God bless you friend.
Thanks a bunch, man
This is great tutorial, and a great channel, thanks Rob!
Yes in deed , very intense, but you really do need that swing attitude, if that is apparent ,you can most definately get it sounding great!
Great lesson!
Best educator out there. Keep up the great work Beatdown!
Great lesson. I have been doing this for years, and I'm glad to hear is is not cheating. 🥁
Master at work.. great tips 😁😁
I love all of your videos Rob!! Thank you so much for taking the time to make these articulate videos. It really helps newer drummers like myself progress, and correct my technique.
Crazy, it really works! Never I was able come near to play something that sounds like a Swing or Jazz. I'm very happy Rob. Only problem for me is that Hi-hat, can't keep it in tact. Greetz from The Netherlands 👍
One of your best lessons, Rob!
amazing! This is just what i need these days! Thnx Rob!
Dude, I have to say I stopped by here just to see what this was about, but to see straight singles turned into swing is genius. Seriously my brain has a few new folds in it. F*ing great, Rob. Thank you for this. Actually makes comping seem so much more approachable. SWEEEET!
Glad it helped 🙂🤘🏽
Thanks, Rob!
Dig your channel, Rob. A real easy "cheat" for newbies to play spang-a-lang ... is the trusty ol' paradiddle-diddle between the ride and snare. Cheers!
Hi Brett, I never thought about that. So you mean R L RR LL R L RR LL ?
I tried it and it works! Thanks made my day. Grts from Belgium
Borba Cymbals, just a note of Thanks for that perspective of the the Spanga lang "cheat" being played like a Paradiddle diddle, it was quite an eye opener.
I am neither a jazz guy or a formally trained drummer ( I feel badly about the latter ) so when I find nuggets of wisdom to help me on my drumming path I feel blessed and grateful!
As a result of not enjoying listening to much jazz music I've never developed the vocabulary or looked past the emphasis on crazy chordal inversions.
But every so often I look into seeing if I can find the key to unlock an interest into the genre but nothing ever really clicks with me.
I watched this video because now is one of those times and your comment jumped right out at me and I am very grateful you posted it.
So, Thanks very much! It was well worth the look today! ✌️😉
Bro you're genius
Awesome exercise to start me on my Jazz drumming journey, great for coordination and independence overall for beginners regardless of genre too.
Great upload as always Rob🥁❤️👌Thanks for sharing 👍
As long as you swing 'm, it's gonna swing 😎 Sometimes it's just that easy. Thx for the great channel, love your videos Rob!
Keep inspiring. Looking forward to possible collaborations.
Thank you!
What a brilliant lesson!
There is a great book out there called Drum Wisdom by Bob Moses. It kind of deals with this very thing. Where the triplet (the swing) can be formed without the specific "spang a lang" thing.
How I snuck up on jazz swing forever. Let me point out that the single stroke, quarter note, style builds a solid foundation for the other players to take off from and come back to. Often improv soloist lose the beat, or get ahead of it. Give 'em solid ground to land on. They will love you. And when it's your turn...
Thank you, Rob. Simple and effective for my sucky swing. I don’t know any bass player that would give me that look with this in my arsenal.
They dang well betta not 🤨 Keep a middle finger on deck in case one does 😏
Rob Brown - A question if you will. Is it possible I would have ever seen you at BB Kings in Nashville?
You are my favourite Rob, from downunder Australia
This guy is #$%@ing awesome. Thanks again
Rob I'm always glad when I check out your vids! you're the coolest and best on internet!!
Thank you! I hope you could add a view of the hi-hat pedal. I am not sure if I should do heel up or heel down for jazz.
Hey you are pretty good lecturer.Keep it Up!
This is just wow!
Informative and fun as always! Thank you!
I totally dig these vids!
Hi Rob! Been a subbie, and enjoying your channel for sometime now. Luv your videos...always learn something, and luv your chops. Are you in the L.A. area? Thanks for all you share! xo
Amazing!!!
Very interesting concept Rob! Wow! Never heard of it. Did you develop it?
Dang man, loving your videos! I'm learning so much!
Great tip...
Again, awesome lesson Mr. Beat Down...I'm glad I clicked!!
Woooooow such a nice lesson woooooow
This is an 👁 opener!
Rob did you go off the grid havent had a video in awhile ,know your busy but waiting....
Man Rob, loving this lesson.
Nice lesson.
Rob, I got a Question. What do you think about to use the stick control to improve the swing ? can it be useful?
holy shit... just so cool
Love the video❤ But du you have a video on how to develovp a actual swing?
Stay tuned, man 😉
You're the man👌
Hi Rob, Thanks again for another gem.
It feels wrong but I know it aint... I love you man ;/ peace
are you finally playing with that Paiste Swish ?
Finally? 🤨 I’ve been smackin that thing since 2016👌🏽
great lesson....bobby brown but my only question is what is the
bass drum foot doing is it on the one beat?
MaJikal UniKorn Brigade : just replace your left hand once in while by your kick...
Bob Schoepen jr thanx Bob, as a beginner i am fascinated by how drums come togather in the music.
I think of swing as playing in bursts and note straight timing
Early view,10th like,first comment.
Awesome video..digging your lessons

A question, at 8.35 is your LF playing on the 1+3 or 2+4 ?
What is that Chinese on the right... love the vid by the way
I’d like to know too!
@@vista8632 Me too
I’m a bass guitarist, and you make me want to learn drums
Smart move 💯😉
Rob Brown I kinda get what the right hand is doing, but I don’t get what the left hand is doing, are you bouncing the stick with your fingers, are you bouncing it with your wrist? I just don’t get it. At 65 I think it’s a bit late for me to start playing drums.
Barrington Johnson never too late! If you mean the buzzed strokes, just don't let the stick bounce once you hit the drum. Drive the tip into the snare head and adjust the amount of pressure for length of buzz. More pressure is less buzz, less pressure is more buzz.
Brian Albus thanks for the tip
No pun intended.
Fuck the spangalang, this is groovy Robby!
Thx this is awsm i swing for free
Beeyouteefull...
And quite useful.
Genio.
Is swing just putting a lope on the beat ?
Like Curly from the Three Stooges says..."Swing it!".
& those quartet notes
have to sound musical & not mechanical while locking in with the bass player.
Great video but not as easy as it looks.
Asked Peter Erskine in
a clinic what beats to
accent or emphasize
when you're playing
straight 4 on the ride
& he answered all 4.
I always thought the spangalang sounded kinda cheesy, but I guess it's really just idiomatic.
God bless you sir
🙂🙏🏽

Ah cool, that first one is how I think I do it...
How'd them ribs come out from the last video?!?!
Check out my Instagram post from yesterday. Repeat performance
"I learnt" ""Ring Ting Ta ting"" " "All these years ! I should have been "Spangalanging it" "Another great vid" the kit sounds great,"
You definitely don't want to be in three four. OR mnemonics are no replacement for musical understanding. His spangalang starts on beat two or four. Your's should be (starting on the and of four) ahRing Ting a Ling Ting'. Mnemonics help us remember but do not actually contain intrinsic information without the understanding which provides the key. Many idiots do not know this and communicaet nothing confidently with artefacts of other people's mnemonics which they in fact have not understood at all, for example a three beat swing.......
And one! only one jedi of swing who thinks this video is not great:)))
You got any lessons on spangalang?
Stay tuned, man 🙂
Thanks Rob
I finally get to learn jazz thanks to your lessons !
@beastievee
"It will help you sound good while your spang-a-lang is in the shop"
"Swing 'em and it's going to swing", says Beatdown.
I suck at everything!
