@@ots1634 Because the status quo literally killed Grimes. Homer is well loved for his oafishness as is the audience. And Grimes was a one shot character that will be forgotten. What makes it super dark was that Grimes' suffering was relatable.
The moral: All those bad feelings that you have towards someone can only affect you, meaning, if you die, or disappear, the person that you hate won't give a f*k because it was only within you.
Yeah precisely! THIS IS A FICTIONAL COMEDY! Obviously almost everything that happens in fictional universes is absolutely nonsensical and of course both the writers and the audience are fully aware of it. The Simpsons is absurd, that is what makes it laughable. That's what makes it entertaining. There's no insult to the audience's intelligence, it's just straight up comedy due to it's obvious absurdity. People who take the details of shows like the Simpsons, Dr Who, Star Wars, Harry Potter Avatar and so on seriously are just pitiful, because they are going to feel as if their intelligence is offended even though that is not the writer's intentions and if the writers do make canonical mistakes those really should be pointed out, then corrected in at least the audience's mind, then just forgotten about because really it's just a fictional story, it doesn't matter, just move the hell on. Frank Grimes is a parody yeah, but not of hard-working, admirably talented people in real life. He's a parody of people who take the unrealism of fictional shows too seriously. Any mature person would have just gone away from Springfield with that kid whose name I've forgotten who made the better nuclear power plant and find a future elsewhere, but he grew insecure due to his sense of importance being damaged by the very existence of a town as crazy as Springfield and people as idiotically wealthy as Burns and Homer, and that insecurity made him a spiteful fool. Perhaps he thought he could persuade people to be better through his complaining, but really he was a vain fool if that was the case. Being negative as opposed to being constructive, is foolish.
The only time he ever defends himself and I’m not mad lol despite being the butt of jokes he’s gotten a successful career than those that made fun of or laughed at him
I read this was the most divisive episode amongst the original writers. Some of them thought it was way too dark. I personally think this is one of the best episodes.
The worst part is. I’m 100% sure frank could have been super successful had he played his cards right with springfields craziness. But instead he went completely overboard in the end and it cost him his life
If you’re in a town where everyone is so dumb they can’t fit a square peg into a round hole, you roll in like "hey- I know what fits in a round hole. Pay me and I’ll fill any hole you’ve got- round, square, octagonal, sky’s the limit baby!" Guarantee you wind up in a decently sized house with lobsters for dinner.
They are flat out telling you that they beat the brains out of children. The high ranking freemasons and other secret societies that run Hollywood and politics are absolutely evil wicked human beings. Wake up.
This was my FAVORITE episode as a kid, although I didn't understand how dark-humored it was. Seeing it now as an adult, it's STILL my favorite episode.
You know they could’ve gone the easy route for a final joke and just have Frank appear as a ghost observing the funeral and going “Aw come on!”. But I’m glad they didn’t, it just adds to the episode’s unusual unsettling nature.
It's because he's gone. The pain and suffering he knew will go forgotten, forever and ever. Homer will go on with his life of almost disgusting ignorance, and Grimey is in the ground.
@@Gabi-dd7bq in the tapped out its explained that he was in coma and buried alive, but he dug out there, then in simpsons comic 211 homer walks by frank grimes in nuclear power plant.
Frank Grimes was a guy who did everything he was told, by the book, and never got the reward that was promised for his integrity and determination. No trials kept him down because he new that the world would compensate him in the end for not giving up. Frank's mistake was assuming that just because he did everything the right way and was the poster child for "resolve", the world owed him everything he desired. His world views came into conflict when he meets Homer Simpson. A below average man, who never applied himself in anything, yet was given everything. Frank did not understand how Homer can be so beloved, blessed financially, and unscathed; this is everything Frank has worked towards. Unable to digest a case like Homer Simpson in comparison to his "works hard but never catches a break" life, Frank has a mental break down. Tragedy strikes when Frank succumbs to his belief of how the world should work. Lesson: Do not live life in a certain or restrictive way because you are promised a trophy at the end. Live a life that gives YOU personal fulfilment. A fulfilling life is the only trophy that you need.
Kind of reminds me of a "nice guy" who thinks women owe them sex just for being nice, and then hating on women and being a jerk when that doesn't happen.
We could all relate to him in a way. For the past three weeks straight I've been grinding speedrunning an unpopular Minecraft category with only 7 submitted runs and the WR last broken a year ago and me talking about it in a Discord server unintentionally got someone to try speedrunning it and in 1.5 hours they beat the WR, while currently I'm almost 500 attempts in over three weeks and tens of hours and it seems I'm not even close to beating it (since the category is very luck dependent and I'm not getting the luck I need while they got very significant luck with minimal time put in).
@@sarahkilpatrick6011 frank was nuts he went crazy he caused his own death because he thought he was homer.and to be honest homer would not touch that sign.
You want to hear the real saddest part about all of this (excluding the later seasons) is that Frank is under the assumption that Mr. Burns gives Homer a free pass. While it is True Mr. Burns does treat Homer differently than anyone else in his life, it’s ultimately Burnses fault that Homers life is what it is today. He made Homers mother run away, leaving her son. Mr. Burns tried to make Bart his heir. He took Lisa’s environmental solution into a means of killing tons of sea life for profit. He even tried to kill Abe Simpson, and sleep with Homers wife. Despite all of that, Mr. Burns doesn’t even remember Homers name.
I think the darkest thing was how it was assumed that he liked to be called Grimy even though he hated it. But then again, it was probably mentioned because it was perhaps the most interesting thing about him, regardless of whether or not that's true.
I've always thought that Frank Grimes grabbing the high voltage wires and killing himself wasn't a mistake on his part. Grimes knew exactly what would happen if he grabbed them, making this scene all the more dark.
the sad thing is its true what frank grimes says all the useless lazy workers get the promotions and raises while the ones that actually work hard get shit on
Homer was the only one to understand that understanding the subject matter is not more important as understanding the one grading the project. Homer understood that Burns loves his plant, so basically copying the existing desing was the smartest thing.
@@justsomerandomguy7539 I'd say it's more along the lines of tone armor, The Simpsons is a ridiculous cartoon show where people suffer much more grievous injuries and live. The only situation where anyone else would die from this is if it wasHans Moleman doing it because his entire gag is dying. Frank Grimes was meant to be a regular person stuck in the world of The Simpsons and as auch he did not follow the same rules.
Homer touching the wires would probably result in a cartoony outline of his skeleton while he shouts some variation of D'Oh. He's be blackened and have smoke around him, but he completely fine the very next scene.
I love the meta-humor at his funeral. Grimes died in a way that other characters would survive. This whole episode treated him as a punching bag. And the last time he's brought up in a sympathetic light he's no exception. I think this was a way of throwing shade at the detractors who thought sitcoms should be about good nuclear families. That's boring, "change the channel".
I saw it more as him being a literal representation of a real-life character enforcing the realistic result of touching something lethal. I mean he survived an explosion but anyone can do that, NO one can touch conducted electricity and live from it, except the cartoon characters this real life man has no way of comprehending at all.
Good nuclear families will always be a greater option than the alternative. It may not be “entertaining” to you, but it’s undeniably more productive for society.
@@justcody4615 I should've bolded the *good.* My point was that it was very subversive for a primetime animated show - the focus was on how the family _wasn't_ a stereotypical strong nuclear family. Homer was an obese alcoholic who solved very dangerous issues at his job through powering water on the controls or randomly pressing buttons. Bart was a brat whose pranks got very serious. Lisa was a smart kid who gets very little mental or emotional support from anyone except Marge, who didn't have the knowledge to provide much and who couldn't keep Bart _or_ Homer in order.
@@aryastark772 I wouldn’t say Ned freaking out and roasting everyone was out of character. It just showed how very observant and aware Ned was to everyone, and at how much he tolerated everyone’s bullshit.
Homer never tried to hurt Grimes because Homer never tries to do anything (at least in this episode), ironically you could say Grimes' only friend in Springfield was Homer, as Homer was the only person closest to him at the time.
Hank Azaria is the voice of Frank Grimes. However he thought William H Macy or Nicolas Cage was a better choice for the character. But I’m I really the only one who sees Tom Kenny the voice of SpongeBob and Ice King as Frank Grimes.
Grimes and Homer are the literal representation of “Work Smarter Not Harder” Homer gains the system and is allowed to keep a great job with minimal effort because of it. Grimes believes his hard work will inherently net him a reward and instead he gains nothing from it. His entire outlook on life that’s basically the American Dream is shattered in front of him by someone who doesn’t even realize it. This is a truly fantastic episode imo
Notice the contrast - Homer is a bumbling careless fool, yet he is a loving man with a good heart that delivers him from terrible circumstances to victory time and time again. Frank Grimes, though industrious and brilliant, is a bitter angry and malevolent man undone by his negative traits
In the early seasons, the only ones really worth talking about, Homer absolutely was a caring family man, just extremely flawed. As the show went on they lost that duality and just turned him into a caricature of those flaws, as they did with Ned, and Burns, and Marge and countless other characters and parts of the show just cause it was easy. But Homer definitely had some tender moments where he showed he was a good person deep down early on.
You know, has anyone considered why high voltage wires that KILL a person almost instantly if touched were left without any sort of protective glass or metal plate in front of it, allowing people to easily grab it?
At those levels, you don' even need to touch the cable as the air around the cables becomes conductive. The really, really dangerous voltages at a power plant are out in the switchyard where the plant interconnects with the grid,
Though Homer is the most extreme example, most people in Springfield seem to have at least partial immunity to things that would kill a normal person. As the only normal person at the plant, Frank Grimes was really the only one in danger.
same reason why a beaker full of acid capable of melting an entire wall in under 3 seconds was in the cafeteria among a spread of donuts and sandwiches?
Part of the genius of the old Simpsons episodes is as a kid it makes you laugh your ass off, while as an adult it both makes you laugh and depressed. Let's face it, everyone that has worked in the real world, especially large corporate environments can relate to this.
I used to get called Frank Grimes at work by a colleague because I would get frustrated (and still do) at what people can get away with, compared with things I've been reprimanded for. WRONG. What Frank Grimes should have did was move to GERMANY since he is so obsessed with working hard. There are NO HOMERS in Germany, remember what happened when the Germans took over the power plant? Haha.
I know the writers probably don’t agree, but Grimes brought this on himself. he doesn’t come across the sympathetic. He just comes across as bitter and hateful.
It's the fact that everyone starts laughing while Grimes' grave is sent 6 feet below during Homer's joke that gives quite the impact on the episode as a whole.
He might have had a good point about Homer being a slacker who lived off of other people's hard work...BUT Frank took things too far by wishing for Homer to fail and be humiliated. We should always strive to wish the best for people, even people we don't like. And Homer was impacted positively by Frank's criticisms, this inspired him to actually try to work harder and be more professional at work. And even in this contest, while it's true it was primarily for children and Frank was trying to trick Homer into making himself look foolish, showed Homer trying to do something productive...arbeit in a terrible manner, but it still showed that Homer was willing to improve and work hard.
@@christianjohnson5379 Yeah. He actually took his criticisms to heart. But at that point, Grimes' only wish was to take him down, which not only failed, but he winded up taking HIMSELF down.
I feel like you could've just shown Frank a video of every horrible accident Homer had experienced even up to this point in the series and he'd probably have been like "Alright maybe I wouldn't want to be Homer."
While Grimes is sympathetic, he dose make two fatal mistakes. 1. He kept comparing himself to other people (Homer) 2. He convinced himself that since Homer had an easier life and had everything handed over to him then that must mean he's a bad person who needed to be punished. You're never going to be happy if you keep comparing yourself to others. Thats just going to make you miserable, which it dose to Grime. In fact you could argue the reason why Homer did so well is because he dosen't live everyday to compare himself to others, always appreciate what he dose have and dosen't live his life to be angery or resentful of others. Also just because someone is doing better then you (even if it isn't fair) it dosen't give you the right to try hurt them, which Grimes tries to do. Yes, some lazy people pretty much get everything handed to them, and that is a very frustrating thing about reality. But is Homer a bad person? Its not like he was crimal or ever had horrible intentions. You don't have the right to inflict pain on someone else just because they don't fit in the way how you think the world should work.
This episode has always stuck with me. I’ve seen this episode when I was kid in Germany. Now living in America for many years, I’ve seen many Homer Simpsons, ignorant, lazy, getting through life but still able to live a good life. I know how Frank Grimes feels now.
If you ever think your life sucks, just remember that not only Frank Grimes struggled for his whole life, but his worst enemy, the one that lead him to his death, was not only invited to his funeral, but practically ruined it by making everyone laugh
@George Washington I always thought that simp was short for simpleton. The later learned that it was an acronym for Squirrels In My Pants, then learned the word we know it as today.
It perhaps doesn’t reflect well on me that the lesson I took from this episode was to be more like Homer in life than Grimey. But then on the DVD commentary, Oakley or Weinstein says that is the moral people should take from it. 😳

As he's being lowered into the ground.
Mr. Burns also tries to marry Marge's mother and tells the cops to arrest Maggie.
I'm about sure he upgraded his life. Yes, he's the one that makes it miserable. But if it weren't for burns Homer wouldn't have a life to begin with.
Burns even tried to steal Maggie's piece of candy but she stopped him by shooting him.
I think the darkest thing was how it was assumed that he liked to be called Grimy even though he hated it. But then again, it was probably mentioned because it was perhaps the most interesting thing about him, regardless of whether or not that's true.
The joke is great but pretty dark: Grimes didn't even control the narrative over his own life.
The joke is that Franks funeral is being attended and run by people who barely know or care about him.
I've always thought that Frank Grimes grabbing the high voltage wires and killing himself wasn't a mistake on his part. Grimes knew exactly what would happen if he grabbed them, making this scene all the more dark.

>frank grimes is bitter, angry, and malevolent

In the early seasons, the only ones really worth talking about, Homer absolutely was a caring family man, just extremely flawed. As the show went on they lost that duality and just turned him into a caricature of those flaws, as they did with Ned, and Burns, and Marge and countless other characters and parts of the show just cause it was easy.
Because the person whose job is to rectify that is the safety technician, in other words, Homer. Which is why it was never done.

While Grimes is sympathetic, he dose make two fatal mistakes.
1. He kept comparing himself to other people (Homer)

@@coolgamer2135 People such as Grimes are an embittered drone and desperately seek approval from their masters who don't care about them in the least, nonetheless never bother to notice them. They'd rather attack people in the same class instead. People like Grimes are jerks that don't understand why things don't go their way and never consider the possibility that the problem lies in their lack of introspection and even themselves and are perpetually jealous of the happiness of others. If you are like this, I pity you more than anything else.

the rare case where mr burns was nice to homer
The way Grimey goes crazy and Homer and everyone just watch and do nothing was down right hilarious.
What did we learn? There is no just world. Hard work does not mean that you will be rewarded.
This really should've been the series finale like they expected.
